Book Description

Childcare providers and educators who musically nurture the children in their care will find enhanced musical aptitude and better performance in other school subjects. They will successfully accomplish these goals by studying the teachings of author Joanne D. Greate, Ed. D. in Music in Early Childhood Education. She presents the why and how of musical nurturing in children. Research on the value of this focus is carried out through specific activities aimed at making the leader more comfortable in singing, moving, playing and listening to music with young children. A supplemental section further prepares the student with an overview of basic musical elements and terms.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An excellent source for parents and early childhood educators.......2007-02-25

As a future educator I believe this book is an excellent source for anyone who has or teaches children. The terminology is easy to follow and the whole layout of the book is great. It not only gives you wonderful ideas on using music with your child but it shows you. I believe the revised edition should include prenatal music nurturing as a chapter and not just an appendix in the back along with a CD of some of the recordings. This is definitely a book I will use over and over again. I recommend this book 100%.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent book full of wonderful information.......2007-02-24

I am currently using this book in an Early Childhood Music class in Clermont, FL. This book is full of countless ideas for using music with young children. It is written in terminology that is easy to read and understand. I also believe that prenatal chapter needs to be included since music starts before birth, and a CD with examples of the music for the labs would be very helpful for those that are not taking the class. I have recommended this book to parents with young children.

I used this book for a class so it was a required buy. I was happy when I realized it would be a book that I will be using for reference in the future and not another wasted buy.

      Book Description

In recent years, childhood studies has become an increasingly popular programme at colleges and universities. This broad-ranging guide has been designed for use on such courses and introduces students to the key issues in the study of childhood, from infancy through to adulthood.

The text approaches childhood studies from an interdisciplinary and multi-professional perspective, presenting the basics of psychology, social welfare, education, health, law, culture, rights, politics and economics as they relate to children. For each discipline, the role of relevant professionals, such as social workers, nursery teachers, paediatric nurses and child lawyers, is also considered. The contributors have both practical and academic backgrounds in a range of specialist areas.

To support student learning, each chapter includes an independent learning activity, case studies and an annotated bibliography, and there is a glossary of technical terms at the back of the book.

From the supplier: A significant number of well-known and globally recognized educators have expressed the need to include the experience of play and creative arts in nurturing the growth and development of children. A female actress expressed this most aptly when she reiterated that children need to be given opportunities to express themselves and advised educators to 'close the books: open the eyes.'
