3 out of 5 stars Not the best end to an otherwise incredible series..........2004-11-30

I just finished the Adversary Cycle with Nightworld and have read all of the Repairman Jack novels that lead up to this final novel. Unfortunately I have to say that Nightwold was a disappointing end to Repairman Jack's world as created by F. Paul Wilson. I loved all of his previous books, even "The Touch", which at the time seemed completely unrelated to any of the rest. My main gripe with this book was the final confrontation, which seemed way too easy and was clumsily written. I found it difficult to understand the scene and exactly what was happening. It also seems silly that the antagonist, while powerful enough to remake the planet to his own liking could be so easily vanquished. And finally the antagonist seemed incredibly out of character in the end. I don't want to spoil it, so let's just say that he didn't go out the way he was written through out the Adversary cycle. Worst of all, the "support" the protagonist needed from the crowd of New Yorkers in order to defeat his enemy was worse than cheesy it was plain ridiculous.

My next gripe was with continuity and was more of an annoyance than a problem. If you haven't read any on the Repairman Jack novels, particularly the newest ones, this won't be an issue for you. In Nightworld, Jack learns a great many things that he has long since known about, and as a result needs to be convinced of what is happening to the world around him. My final issue is, unlike Reborn and Reprisal, Nightworld isn't very edgy, it just doesn't have that suspenseful feeling that wouldn't let me put down either of its two most recent predecessors. Sure there plenty of disgusting scenes such as a man being gouged by a 10-foot millipede which lays eggs in his abdomen that hatch and eat him alive. But that was more gross than scary, which is true of most of the book.

I would have liked to see more scares thrown at the population of Nightworld like the antagonists ability to control the dead, not just scary insects and killer winged beasts. What I was really hoping for was a greater explanation of the to eternal opposing forces, which are fighting for the planet. No luck there.

That said, I still enjoyed the book, as it brought back characters from all of the previous adversary cycle books and my favorite, Repairman Jack. And while it wasn't the best ending to an otherwise excellent series, it still was a somewhat satisfying ending to the story arc. I just think it could have been better, and wish Wilson had waited to write Nightworld after he decides (hopefully not soon) to end the RJ Series, that way the two story arcs could have merged and ended at the same time. But if you've read the previous books in the adversary cycle you'll of course have to read Nightworld and I would recommend doing so, albeit with low expectations so that you won't be too disappointed or if you completely disagree with my review you're pleasantly surprised.

5 out of 5 stars Spine-Tingling.......2004-07-25

This is a great great book. If you are familiar with the authors' adversary cycle you will know this was the last book of the six. Let me say that he saved the best for last. This book is a horrific page turner from start to finish. Trust me when I say you will enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Wilson delivers!.......2004-06-14

Wilson wrapped up his entire pantheon of characters from his horror novels in this one. I first read this without having read The Touch, Reborn, or Reprisal. Although I couldn't understand all the subplots, I got enough of it to sense the enormity of Wilson's undertaking -- he was essentially plunging into Hell the world he had created and included in all his novels. Now, years later (after having read the mentioned novels), I find the story even MORE enjoyable. I gave this 5 stars even when I was a little lost -- now I wish I could give it more.

4 out of 5 stars High chill factor.......2004-02-09

Rarely do you come across a horror novel that truly chills you to the bone. This is one of those books. The days get shorter and creepy crawlies come out of holes that pop up all around the world. The monsters and their need for flesh make this a difficult job for REPAIRMAN JACK. Will he make it out alive. You'll just have to read it for yourself. My only critisism of this book is I thought it was rushed at the end, and the loose ends were'nt tied-up.

5 out of 5 stars "THE END OF LIFE AS WE KNOW IT"?.......2003-10-31

Nightworld is a seriously scary book. Not personally scary but scary for the world as we know it. Nightworld completes the Nightworld series, which consists of six books, starting with The Keep. I've read all books and until the publication of Nightworld, it was called The Adversary Series, taken from the fact that the underlying element of this series is the ongoing confrontation through eternity and through the universe of two powerful forces.

These forces are not defined by good and evil for they are not. But one force, which is called the Other in the books, is brutal and caring nothing for humanity, tends to use evil means to achieve it's goal, while his adversary though not necessarily Good utilizes humanity to thwart His Adversary, The Other.

The Anti-Other, throughout history, has utilized a human champion to battle the Other. This champion is empowered with Godlike powers and made immortal for this purpose.

In the initial book, The Keep, which I've mentioned, the earthly agent of The Other, Rasalom, was weakened and imprisoned in a specially constructed prison by a champion of a long gone age, maybe a champion named Glaeken, whose subsequent job in The Keep was to keep tabs on The Other and make sure it didn't escape.

The Keep is a marvelous story wherein, Rasalom, because of some Nazi soldiers, almost escapes his incarceration. I won't go into the story but at the end, Rasalom is vanquished and ostensibly terminated but this is not to be and through the course of two more books, Reborn and Reprisal, Rasalom is rejuvenated, recuperated re-empowered and is set to take revenge upon troublesome humanity. The stage is set for Nightworld.

Nightworld
"If thou gaze into the abyss, the abyss will also gaze into thee"

What in the world is going on! Sunrise was five plus minutes late! we're in early summer, surise should be later not earlier, and then another shocker, sunset was ten minutes early! This continues on the second day etc and then a bottomless hole 200 feet across and perfectly round opens up in New York's, Central Park.

The world's scientific community, though at a loss for these occurrences, downplay these episodes and insist there is a rational explanation for these phenomenons. However, there is one who knows what's going on and he has a birds eye view of the Central Park event from his apartment.

It is the ancient warrior Glaeken, who is now in his 80s (his immortality ended after his 1941 battle with Rasalom), living under a pseudonym, Mr. Veileur. Glaeken knows exactly what's going on and he immediately sets out to gather a group of individuals to try to effect some sort of resistance, admittedly an enormous longshot but the only shot humanity has.

Main Charactersin order of appearance

Rasalom [Evil agent of the Other]
Dr. Nicholas Guinn [Physicist and friend of Bill Ryan]
Glaeken/veileur [Aged champion of the Anti-Other]
(ex father) Bill Ryan [Friend and confidant of Glaeken]
Carol Teece [mother of the reborn Rasalom]
Repairman Jack [hero of "The Tomb", a resourceful replacement for the aged Glaeken]
Kolabati [an ancient Indian Priestess who has two artifacts Glaeken needs]
Ba Nyguen [a special forces trained Vietnamese body guard for the following]
Sylvia Nash [mother of the adopted boy Jeffery]
Dr Alan Bulmer [Sylvia's husabnd and Jeffery's father]
Jeffery [a boy who has a healing power called Dat-tay-vao which Glaekin needs in his battle]

Glaeken meets with his would be recruits and of course his story is met with some skepticism, however, as Glaeken predicts, on the second night, hoards of large flying killer insect like creatures(later named by Glaeken as Belly Flies and Chew Wasps descend on an unsuspecting population and kill hundreds of people, horses, dogs etc. Also thousands of these creatures make a beeline to the home of Jeffery and his parents, in an obvious effort to kill Jeffery.

These creatures and the even more deadly creatures that follow can't stand sunlight but of course, day by day, the sunlight is slowly disappearing. In addition thousands of new holes open up around the world and every effort to cap them has been futile, with additional casualties. Humanity is quickly being wiped out and the daylight is getting shorter and shorter!

Things indeed look bleak for humanity but at least the recent horrors have solidified our cadre. Repairman Jack, with Ba in tow is off to Maui and Bill Ryan is off to Rumania, all to retrieve the artifacts that Glaeken needs to have a chance to counteract the carnage.

Can Repairman Jack and Glaeken, along with his unlikely cadre save "life as we know it", or will Rasalom rule over an Unholy Nightmare World?

Author

If you've never read F.Paul Wilson, I recommend him heartily.
He has a nice easily readable writing style and he seems to always have unusual if not unique plots to his stories. This particular book is the culmination of a series that I'm sure did not start out as such. "The Keep" was the original book as I have mentioned and is the basis for the series and as mentioned "Reborn" and "Reprisal" were definitely created to make a series out of a single novel but the resourceful Wilson managed to tie two unrelated books "The Tomb" and "The Touch" into episodes in the series in this last book and it works very well for me.

I was also glad to see Wilson reprise the ever popular Repairman Jack. Wilson has gone on to write several more Repairman Jack novels.

Reviewers Note

Because of the nature of this story. this book tends to be fairly gory and graphic about it. If this is not your cup of tea, then do not read this book. Then again, what are you doing reading any horror books?

5 out of 5 stars I love this book!.......2005-04-30

This book was one of my favorite. I actually loved Blaise, she was such a bad girl hehe

I even use her name as my SN!

3 out of 5 stars "Feminism is the Radical Notion that Women are People".......2005-04-05

"Spellbinder" (also published as "Enchantress") is the third book in L. J. Smith's `Night World' series, concerning the secret world of supernatural creatures that live among normal human beings. Called the Night World, there are several rules imposed upon the witches, vampires, werewolves and shape shifters that inhabit this world, namely that they are to never tell a human being about their secret society, and never to fall in love with one of them.

This is the first book in the series to deal with witches rather than vampires, and concerns the lives of two seventeen year old witch cousins who made their first appearance in "Secret Vampire": Thea and Blaise Harman. The two girls are complete opposites; Thea is fair and quiet, whilst Blaise is black-haired and someone who enjoys playing with the human world for fun - making boys fall in love with her and then discarding them. After a series of expulsions from high schools around the country (the last one having resulted in the school burning down), the cousins are brought to live with their grandmother Edgith Harman - the Crone of All the Witches, a prestigious position within the Circles of Night World witches. In other words, the cousins are on thin ice.

But Blaise doesn't trouble herself with things like this - she's always played her love games and doesn't plan on stopping now. Thea however, is desperate to live a quiet, peaceful life. But then she finds her soul mate: Eric Ross, a human. Their connection is powerful, but Thea knows that should they be discovered, it could result in executions for both of them, or in war among the factions of the Night World. When Blaise finds out about Thea's feelings, she decides the only way in which to act is to separate the two of them: by using her own charms to divert Eric's attention away from Thea...

The blurb would have you believe that Blaise is an out-and-out villain, and the focus of the story is on the two girls fighting over Eric's affections. This however is not so - the main conflict in the story comes from Thea's attempts to protect Eric by summoning up a benevolent spirit. However, when the spell goes wrong, Thea finds that a murderous witch-ghost is on the loose, and perfectly capable of killing. As well as this there are numerous sub-plots, including Edgith's failing health, Blaise's exploits at her new high school, a few spells and meetings with other witches, Thea's various attempts to allure/dispel Eric's affections and an introduction to Eric's family and his radical-feminist little sister.

All this equals a rather slip-shod plot that slides all over the place. It's not that the story isn't interesting, but L. J. Smith doesn't seem quite sure on where it's going, or where the true conflict lies. Instead it comes across as a series of magical events and workings that don't quite have the urgency and suspense of other books in the series - especially the later ones.

Furthermore, many of the plot points and characters in the book were rather familiar - Smith has been recycling her own work, most particularly "The Secret Circle" trilogy. Blaise and Thea are almost identical to Faye and Diana (and both sets were cousins!) whilst things like the vengeful spirit, the death of a school student and the forbidden love affair all have their counterpoints in this previous trilogy. As such, the story has a lack of originality (and the coupling of Thea and Eric doesn`t come across as *that* genuine).

But there are some nice touches throughout: we get another piece of the ever-growing history of the Night World (this time it's the story of Hellewise and Maya), some names of other characters that have either been in previous books or will pop up in later ones (such as Aradia, Ash, Quinn and Thierry) that make the book feel like a small part of a larger whole. Smith also makes good use of folklore and mythology, weaving little bits of `real' legends and practices into what the characters say and do - like the Cup of Lethe or the many allusions to Aphrodite.

All in all, not a bad contribution to the 'Night World' series, though by no means the best: things only get really interesting when we hit book five: "The Chosen".

5 out of 5 stars Magic, Love and Witchy Women...............2003-10-17

This book is one of the greatest of the nightworld series. This book is about gentle, nature loving Thea and her wild beautiful cousin, Blaise.Thea falls in love with a human but since the rules of the nightworld state that she can't love a human Thea finds herself in a situation that could turn deadly......
Blaise willing to do anything for her cousin tries to lure Eric into her trap and get him away from Thea for good!

This has to be my favorite of the series. It was interesting to see the nightworld from the witches point of view and Thea and Blaise are great characters. Especially Blaise, she's no airhead beauty but like her name a bright blaze of passion, intelligence, and loyalty.

4 out of 5 stars great read!.......2002-05-22

While not the best Night World book, it's certainly a good read. Thea and Eric were almost too goody-goody as main characters for my taste, but they were still fun to read about. I thought Blaise was one of the most interesting characters, with so many layers it's hard to really figure her out. The author did a wonderful job creating characters you could care about.

5 out of 5 stars Black vs White.......2002-02-18

Thea Harman has always put up with Blaise's obsession with owning boys. It has gotten them kicked out of all their past schools after the boys became obsessed with Blaise's fiery looks. Thea begs Blaise not to work her magick when they go to their new school.
As soon as they get there, Thea meets Eric. A boy very understanding of animals. She recognizes their connection almost immediately and tries to stay away from him. But she notices Blaise wanting Eric for herself.
When Thea sees this, she knows that she must protect Eric in any way she can. Even if she must call upon some of the most powerful magicks that are forbidden to use. And even if she must die for falling in love with a human.

Great book! Blaise was an interesting character though. Very bad, obviously, but i liked what she did for Thea in the end.

4 out of 5 stars Better Than Dark Universe.......2005-03-03

I was disappointed when I read Dark Universe but I still decided to give Nightworlds a try. I am glad I did. All of the stories in this collection have been selected for inclusion by the author. These really are some of his best and most innovative.

The stories in this volume are dark and definitely deserving of an author considered a great in the horror field. Some are disturbing, some are unsettling, and some are just plain spooky. There is also a little science fiction included (although just as dark as the others).

If you like a good collection of tales to cause shivers, you can certainly do far worse than this collection of zombies, psychopaths, invaders, and things that go slash in the night.

4 out of 5 stars Nightworlds.......2004-12-28

Not as good a collection as Dark Universe, but still a superior
collection of short stories. William F. Nolan is a true master of the short story. Not to much gore, but usually a twist at the end that will make the story stick out in your mind.

5 out of 5 stars The 6th Night World Book - Soulmates - My opinion........2003-08-06

It is my opinion that Hannah and Thierry are basically the poster children for the soulmate principle (hence the title). When you read the book, you will understand why.

Hannah is a normal girl with a normal life and normal friends. She aspires to be a palaeontologist and will be quite content with her life if she dies with nothing but the knowledge that she has discovered the nest of a duckbill platypus.

Then her ENTIRE world is turned upside down when she begins to find notes in places around that only she could put them. Notes in her own handwriting, warning her of a danger, a danger that was coming. Dead Before Seventeen...

She goes to a psychiatrist, who is supposed to help, but he unlocks a Pandora's box of memories when he suggests the idea of hypnotism, and past regression. Hannah is an old soul, someone who has been reincarnated time and again, ever since people lived in caves. A stranger tore her life apart, brutally murdering her tribe out of a madness born of torture and self-denial...until, he finds his soulmate, the one who he is destined to be with, in the eyes of a dying girl.

The stranger's name is Theorn, and he is a witch...or, he was, before he was made into the second vampire to ever cross the face of the earth...full of self hatred, he runs away from his tribe, but cannot contain his hunger for blood for long. He attacks a small human girl, and in return, her tribe torture him. Only one person dares to try to help him. A human girl by the name of Hana.

Unfortunately Theorn goes insane and he regains his mind to late. Almost all of the tribe are dead, including the one person who tried to help him. Stricken with remorse, he realises that this girl, who he has just killed, is the person who is meant to love for evermore. But the Hana is not dead yet. She forgives him, and extracts a promise from him. A promise that he will never kill again.
Now the stranger is back. He has kept his promise, and searched for Hannah throughout the years, trying to make amends, waiting for her to be reborn. Now he is Thierry, the Lord of the Night World -- and nothing in heaven or hell will keep him from his soulmate again. However, Thierry's maker, Maya, the most powerful vampire in the entire world is obsessed with him, and she hates Hannah with a vengeance. She will stop at nothing to destroy her...
So, it Hannah's destiny is death, can even Thierry's love protect her?

5 out of 5 stars Excellent read!.......2003-03-15

Hannah thought she was going crazy. She kept receiving notes, in her own handwriting, that told her she would be dead before her seventeenth birthday.... A great horror series for those aged thirteen and up. Each in this series is a book in itself, but all come together in a greater picture. You see characters of previous books in cameo shots which make the plot even more realistic. Excellent!

5 out of 5 stars Great Addition to Night World Series.......2003-02-23

If I could take one nightworld books to a desert island this would be it. Thierry-what a great guy!He has waited for centuries for Hannah to be reborn but each time she is she dies! Enter Maya the first vampire and a absoultly evil, souless being ( just read what she did to become a vampire!!)This ebony haired vamp has wanted Thierry since when they were cave people and her single minded obsession has torn Thierry and Hannah apart again and again through the ages. Can Hannah trust Thierry again? Will Maya seek therapy for her unhealthy fixation? Can things end happily for Hannah this time around or is she doomed to die again?

5 out of 5 stars YAY!!!.......2002-11-25

WONDERFUL story! I still remember it to this day. L. J. Smith is a wonderful writer and this story - I think - is one of her best. The plot is so deep, I have to admit, I got a little tearful :') It's great. It DID take me a while to understand what was going on, but once I did, I couldn't put it down! (not good when you've got school the next morning) All in all, it's a great book!

Book Description

Julia Alvarez, Federico Andahazi, Junot Díaz, Laura Esquivel, Pedro Juan Gutiérrez, and Laura Restrepo are just a few of the critically acclaimed storytellers featured in this brand-new literary collection, edited by noted translator Thomas Colchie.

In this new collection, acclaimed translator and editor Thomas Colchie brings together twenty-one mesmerizing stories-fourteen of which are being published in English for the first time-by some of today's premier voices in contemporary Latin American literature. In selections representing the wide and varied spectrum of the new Latin American writing, authors such Carmen Posadas and Jorge Volpi explore historical legends and hyper-realities with droll humor and subversive wit, while others, like Mayra Santos-Febres and Ernesto Mestre-Reed, darkly illuminate the contemporary urban scene with a grittier narrative and stylistic daring that takes the reader far beyond the tropical exotics and magical realism of the earlier "boom" writers.

Spanning life in the Latin Americas in the last several decades, the settings for these stories sweep from South America to Mexico and the Caribbean, and as far north as Alaska. A stellar collection of inventive storytelling, it will prove as irresistible as it is provocative, the mark of the very best in recent Latin American fiction.

5 out of 5 stars A Collection of Quality Fiction.......2002-10-13

Although there are a few stories in this collection which I did not care for at all, the vast majority of them were fresh, exciting and thought-provoking. What is most interesting is that most of the authors whose stories appear here are not citizens of a Latin American country only, but have lived in and experienced cultures from around the world. One author, Anna Kazumi Stahl, is a German-Japanese who lives in Buenos Aires and writes in Spanish.

There are many gems here: Carlos Franz's "Circle," a beautiful and precise rendering of the cycle of life; Stahl's "Natural Disasters," Carmen Posadas' vibrant and wise story of "The Nubian Lover," wherein a woman and her ex-husband try to reconcile via a trip to Egypt; Javier Valdes' Stephen King-like "People Like Us," a chilling story of a pair of lovers and their lust for material gain. My favorite is Ernesto Mestre-Reed's "After Elian," a brilliant story about an old woman dying of cancer who refuses to give up the desire to live despite the humiliations she may suffer. All in all, a great collection to start exploring the many wonderful Latino authors currently at work contributing to the greater body of excellent world literature.

The story is set on Nightworld. A planet originally settled by humans that was anything but horrible. However, plans went awry and the result is a planet nearly dominated by monsters; especially at night.

At what monster more appropriate to dominate the creatures of the night than a vampire?

The creatures of Nightworld are not the products of magical spells, sorcery, or curses. They are sophisticated robots and cyborgs. There is even a bit of serious "bleeding edge" genetic biotechnology involved.

They are incredibly hard to stop and very hard to kill. There are a lot of them and more are getting made from time to time.

The young hero falls in love and suffers a bit of heartbreak. His nemesis the arch vampire is a bit to blame.

Plenty of action, emotion, suspense, and plot twists. Great likeable characters and evil enemies.

Hopefully the author(s) will get back to this series. "Nightworld" as the first book, this one was the second. It was a very good read and it makes me very sad they have not done another.

You don't have to be telepathic to know I enjoyed this book very much. Hopefully my enthusiasm is infectious and the publisher will bring the series back into print and encourage the writers to make more books for it.

The book could have been ahead of its time. Now that Terminator, Blade Runner, Blade, and the Lost Boys have each carved out their "chunk" of the public psyche books like this have a better chance of making it big.
