5 out of 5 stars Ready-to-Use Social Skills Lessons & Activities for Grades 7-12.......2007-06-09

I love this book; It really encourages creative thinking and is a must for group work with adolescents. I highly recommend it!!!

4 out of 5 stars Great Combo of Activities.......2007-05-14

Haven't used this in practice yet, but I read through most of the activies. This book offers a lot of great social skills activities that are easy to incoroporate in the classroom or for school counselors. You can easily pick and choose activities that might be useful in your own group sessions or adapt activities to your group goals. It could be improved by including more last session/wrap up ideas for closure. It could also implement additional processing questions so the user doesn't have to think to much to create his or her own.

5 out of 5 stars Great Tool.......2007-01-13

This series of books are wonderful for students who lack social skills. I have shared the book's ideas with colleagues and all seem to enjoy the lessons provided.

2 out of 5 stars This book was disappointing.......2007-01-03

The description said you could easily apply the skills and exercises at home, outside of the classroom environment, but it is clearly written for classroom use.

The author doesn't really explain what to do with each exercise either, it's seemed more like a list of suggestions or ideas than real activities. For instance they would say "come up with a story to show typical youngsters conflicting over a problem and give examples of how to resolve those problems without violence."

That's what I got the book for.... if I knew how to come up with scenerios like that and exercises on my own, I wouldn't need help.

I gove it 2 stars because there are a couple of worksheets included that do seem like they are useful practices, but other than that, this was a waste of money.

4 out of 5 stars Valuable Resouce but..........2006-11-12

I have used this book often in my social skills group for 6th graders. It is a good starting point but some of the material needs to be adjusted to be used with these students or simply to be more entertaining. I tend to use the information to introduce a topic, then use an activity or game, and then will use the reproducible worksheets as a review/post-test.

There's this boy. Let's say he's somewhere between nine and thirteen years old or so. You'd like to see this kid get creative. You'd like to see him get some exercise. You'd like to see him get out from in front of the television. And you'd love for him to be motivated enough to find some stuff to do on his own. This boy NEEDS The Big Book of Boy Stuff! The Big Book of Boy Stuff has all the important information that boys just have to know. Collected here for the first time in one place, it holds the answers to these timeless questions: What do I do if I get a bean stuck up my nose? How can I make lightning without killing myself? Where can I find new practical jokes to play on my friends and family? How can I make a rocket? What is the best way to poop outside? How do I tell a girl I like her? Why would I tell a girl I like her? How many mosquitoes does it take to suck all the blood out of a person? What's that smell? . . . and many, many more! This big, thick, durable book includes fascinating chapters on gross stuff, magic, emergencies, fireworks, games, experiments, jokes, activities, insults, pets, flying things, and, of course, duct tape. 5 out of 5 stars Sheer Magic.......2007-06-25

It was fascinating to watch The Big Book of Boy Stuff work its magic.

After arriving in the mail, the book sat on my son's (age 10) nightstand for a good week. And then he showed me that beneath the dust jacket, the book is embossed with the word "Physics."

"Why did they do that?" he wanted to know.

My husband and I suggested that it was a prank so that he could fool people into thinking he was studying high level science. And my son thought that was the coolest thing ever.

Over the course of the following weeks, this book has been with him constantly. He consults it like it's the I Ching, and is constantly sharing the knowledge, history, and trivia that he finds. And when his cousins or friends come over, the kids disappear together in his room or the yard for long periods of time, reading aloud from the book or working on silly activities and experiments together.

I would like to add two more things. While this book's tone is irreverent, it consistently encourages curiosity and a love of learning. Further, this book has even eclipsed the popularity of the excellent The Dangerous Book for Boys in this household.

1 out of 5 stars If you don't like your sweet child and would rather have a retarded brat instead, this is the perfect book for you!.......2007-05-10

This book was a gift to my 8 year old. I flipped through it and figured out pretty quick it was sexist, but I figured it would be alright, we could find things and point them out, talk about how girls and boys aren't really that different from each other but how society tries to drive a wedge between the sexes so early. So he would read it every so often, but it isn't the sexism that is so bad about this book- it's how it teaches boys it's cool to be a rude hick. It's like gaining a bad uncle that teaches your child how to be dumb. Another complaint is it has things in there that are actually false, such as girls having cooties- it's said in a joking way, but it honestly took me a while to convince him there's no such thing as cooties. It's a mix of fact and falsities so how's he to know what's what?

5 out of 5 stars The Big Book of Boy Stuff.......2007-04-01

My son absolutely loves this book. He read the riddles to me and we had fun as a family doing some of the experiments. It has literally followed him wherever he has gone.

5 out of 5 stars If you have boys you need this book!.......2007-01-09

This book is the best! Being a mom, I never thought of some of the stuff that is in this book! Somethings are gross, some things I just don't get, but everything is hilarious and fun according to my sons and husband. They all love it and have spent lots of time together reading it and trying the things suggested. My daughter and I have learned a few new things too-even though her reaction to a lot of it is-ewwwww-to my sons' everlasting delight! Great book.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect gift for any boy 8-35.......2007-01-09

My son loved the book, he couldn't put it down all night on Christmas Eve, and had read the entire thing in 3 days. I went in to tuck him in on Christmas night, and he had fallen asleep reading it, instead of watching the tv. He slept with it for 3 nights, and now that school is back in session, he won't leave the house without it in the mornings, so he can share its many pearls of wisdom with his buddies at school. I have to admit, I thumbed through it, and found myself unable to put it down, smiling to myself at some of the memories it brought up.
For Christmas, I also got my niece "The big book of girl stuff" and they took turns reading bits of their books to each other, and then cracking up, all evening long. It was very nice to look out in the living room and see an 8 year old and an 11 year old with their noses stuck in books, while the PS3 sat, unused in the corner. That is about as good of a recomendation as it gets.

    Book Description

Activity schedules-simple, yet revolutionary teaching tools-enable children with autism to accomplish activities with greatly reduced adult supervision.

An activity schedule is a set of pictures or words that cues a child to follow a sequence of activities. When activity schedules are mastered, children are more self-directed and purposeful in their home, school, and leisure activities-doing puzzles, interacting with classmates, and preparing food with minimal assistance from adults. In Activity Schedules for Children with Autism, parents and professionals find detailed instructions and examples to help them: assess a child's readiness to use activity schedules; prepare an activity schedule; understand graduated guidance; monitor progress; expand social skills; and progress to written schedules.

Based on a decade of research conducted at the Princeton Child Development Institute, Activity Schedules for Children with Autism offers a proven teaching tool to help children with autism make effective use of unstructured time, handle changes in routine with more ease, and choose among an established set of activities independently. It can be used successfully with young children, adolescents, and adults, rewarding them with more control over their lives.

    5 out of 5 stars Enlightening.......2007-01-29

A great book for teaching life skills to children with autism. Useful for the young and old child, the new and experienced teacher. Very detailed and helpful book.

    5 out of 5 stars A Glowing Review .......2006-08-02

This book is necessary for anybody looking to implement or improve an already existing activity schedule. Although McClannahan and Krantz are experts in the field of behavior analysis, they wrote the books so that you don't have to be a near genius I.Q to understand it. The book is perfect for parents and teachers as well as students studying behavior analysis or special education teachers interested in working with autistic children. The first chapter is dedicated to discussing what an activity schedule is and how your child or student will benefit. The subsequent chapter delves into the pre-requisite skills the child will need prior to beginning. The authors explain each pre-requisite skill, why it is necessary and provide examples of each skill. The next few chapters discuss how to implement the activity schedule as well as how to measure progress. They really left nothing out. Toward the end of the book, they explained what to do when the activity schedule is mastered and provided a great deal of detail on the dos and don'ts. It is clear, that the McClannahan and Krantz really want readers to be successful at creating and teaching activity schedules. They have also co-authored Teaching Conversation to Children with Autism, which is also worth checking out. My hats off to them on such an awesome educational easy to read and understand how to book.

    5 out of 5 stars Appropriate goals........2003-06-17

The goal of raising any child is to guide them into independance, and though many autistic children will never reach complete independance, it remains an important goal. Independance is an important factor in self-esteem and is essential for entering any portion of adult life. I was consistantly frustrated with therapy manuals which required my complete and undivided attention at all times. I'm under no delusion that I will be forever available to my autistic son, and it would be nice for me to feel that he could get up and at least dress himself at some point without my verbally prompting him.

The clear instructions and logical directives in "Activity Schedules for Children with Autism" place it on my 'highly recommended' list. While not a book I would recommend for a parent whose child has been newly diagnosed, I certainly recommend it to those parents with other therapeutic programs already in place. The activity schedules are very easily integrated into existing therapies and school environments, greatly boosting their success. I've also implimented an advanced version of activity schedules, verbally explained, with my five-year-old typical daughter - as a result the morning 'dilly-dallies' and afternoon 'hum-drums' have all but disappeared.

I would recommend that existing image programs be used whenever possible, only to cut down on the time it takes to prepare the schedules. I use Flash! Pro2, which can be found online, though there are many other graphic programs that could be used as well. (As a webmaster I've found that many of the 'web-ready' image collections contained pictures that were appropriate for this program as well as ABA and DTT programs.)

All-in-all, excellent book, flexible program, expertly explained.

2 out of 5 stars 'This show stinks.'- Tony Kornheiser.......2002-01-30

I read this book and became annoyed on two points. The authors incorporate and instruct in using PECS, TEACCH and ABA components throughout the book--yet fail to mention these highly useful and universally known interventions by name. This smells pretty arrogant, considering that originators of and recognized experts in these fields are alive, well---and also Ph.Ds. Two: They malign discrete trial teaching in a businesslike tone, with no proof to back their statement. Their stance: DTT does not build give and take conversation skills. However, I could not find anything in this book indicating their concept had mastered this issue either. Their supposed 'initiated interactions' are still scripted; human interaction has been replaced by reliance on the continuing existence of a picture or word to prompt a response in the form of taking action. So, it's still a duck.

The authors also make some big mental leaps from 'because' to 'therefore', in the later chapters. Perhaps they know that many parents want to believe there is something out there JUST THAT EASY, but these implied leaps of faith left me slightly offended. You know about the bridge for sale, right?

But wait, the concept does have merit, and could be a godsend for some kids and families. I am inclined to incorporate some of the concept into our own home program for dealing with my son's downtime pacing, but I think my endgoal will be for him to INITIATE a conversation with me starting with, "Mom, what can I do?"

If the authors do write a followup to this 1999 version, it would be mighty respectful of their readers and their professional peers to play it straight and help parents learn to use ABA, TEACCH and PECS concepts correctly so as to incorporate Activity Schedules effectively into their children's lives.

We have enough to worry about without wondering if we are being bamboozled. ;-)

5 out of 5 stars Give your child with autism skills for independence!.......2001-04-10

This program could be adapted to work successfully for just about anyone - in fact, most of the adults I know (including myself) could benefit from some of these simple ideas. This concept is especially beneficial for helping someone who has autism develop better generalization skills.

This book will teach you how to make schedules that your child can complete on their own. Schedules that will eventually prepare them for a life in the future where they can mangage their own schedule using a regular day planner or other "socially appropriate system. The books says "As a parent of a child with autism, you have learned many coping skills that help you deal with the demands of everyday life. Teaching your child to use an activity schedule initially increases those demands, but ultimately creates some freedom for you." It does take a little work to set up the schedules at first, but it does create freedom for you and for your child - and that is a great benefit!

The examples in the book are well writen and cover all aspects of a childs socialization in school, at home, and with peers. I did have to omit a couple of worksheets that gave examples of how not to behave as it presented ideas that would be copied by low functioning or defiant kids. The systematic review of social skills utilizing worksheets and discussions has made this book a great addition to my work library.

2 out of 5 stars Mislead and disappointed.......2007-01-31

Although there were a couple of two star reviews, there were more strongly positive reviews so I thought to try this with my 4-6 grade students in special education. First, I have to address the drawings in this book. While I understand that the drawings were simple for the probable saving of time, they were completely racially stereotypical and innacurate, and I took offense to that, especially knowing that many of my students would take note of that (ex. Asians with slanted lines for eyes and names such as Ping, and African American students with big lips and noses). Plus the activities were just too simple, with little room for discussion and growth. While the book is for "special children", they can still have good discussions and come up with own scenarios and do not need answers so clearly obvious. There are just too many items to tackle in this book and nothing is gone into with any depth. I just could not see myself using anything in this, so in fact sent it back. I am glad for the many who were able to make this work for them so easily. I am just not one of them.

5 out of 5 stars Variety of topics.......2006-03-14

It's a handle book that has many different topics to help your child or student. The most important is that the child doesn't need to know how to read because all the pages have ILLUSTRATION so you can explain with the image.

    5 out of 5 stars great book.......2003-07-31

I found this book to be very helpful in working with students both individually and in groups. I used the activities for students ages K-5. Everyone enjoyed the activities, and the structure of the lessons helped me to guide discussions and have questions prepared to ask even on the busiest of days!

    Book Description

Team Challenges promotes effective communication skills and teamwork. Designed to offer teachers, facilitators, and parents a wide variety of activities to cultivate children's problem-solving skills while fostering cooperation between group members, the activities in the book utilize common household items and recycled materials, and require no more than 10 minutes, start to finish. Presented with a challenge from this book, kids work cooperatively to solve open ended problems which can incorporate structure building, improvisation skills and physical tasks. The challenges will teach children to experiment with building methods, discover new uses for everyday items, try on new personas, and express themselves as they work together toward a successful solution. Team members are required to think outside the box, communicate clearly, and cooperate with each other in order to complete each task.

Activities include building structures from materials such as index cards, drinking straws, paper clips and sticky dots; moving items from one location to another without directly touching them; or presenting a skit portraying their solution to a hypothetical dilemma. Children will learn not only from each other, but also from observing how other teams navigate each task.

Pass some creative problem solving skills on to the kids (and adults!) in your life with the fun activities you'll find in Team Challenges. Adults who work with children will find this to be a great addition to their repertoire.

Ever found yourself with five extra minutes to spare, but nothing to discuss in that short amount of time? Turn to Chapter Five, and you'll find questions such as these:

*Name things that you carry on your back (a backpack, a baby, a monkey)
*Name things that you take out (garbage, Chinese food, an opponent)
*List things that are printed (newspapers, the alphabet, T-shirts)

Need a simple activity to occupy the kids and encourage them to work cooperatively? Challenge them to one of the Tiny Tasks, found in Chapter Four:

*Build a structure as tall as possible using 5 marshmallows and 10 drinking straws
*Create a bridge that will span 18" using 3 sticky notes and 10 cotton balls
*Create a continuous line as long as possible using 1 envelope and 5 recycled bottle caps

More detailed challenges are found in subsequent chapters.

5 out of 5 stars A wide variety of great ideas. .......2006-12-16

This book offers all kinds of great activities that will help foster cooperation, communication and creativity within whatever group of people you're using it for. The tasks range from mental activities to physical ones and are easy to understand, fun to execute and can be completed with objects that you usually have around the house. The book is a great tool for your own children, birthday parties, classrooms and it's also a perfect teacher gift!

    2 out of 5 stars 3 activities with 1001 variations.......2006-11-23

Essentially, this is a book for people with little-to-no experience with group games or team building. All of the activities listed were ones I already knew, and the large number in the title comes from the number of variations for each of 3 activities: building things out of everyday items (see how high you can build a tower with the given items), common physical challenges (get the group from one side of the room to another using various props), and improv/word games. If you have a small imagination and very limited knowlegde of common team building activities, you might like this book, but if you're already in the field and looking for a book of new ideas, keep on looking. This isn't it.

4 out of 5 stars From the Creativity Editor at BellaOnline.com.......2006-05-11

Team Challenges is a resource book packed with ideas and activities for encouraging and developing children?s creativity, lateral thinking, and communication skills.

It's easy to see how these challenges could help to develop a child's confidence as well as exposing children to career and skill development options. Solutions are not necessarily guaranteed and children can be encouraged to continue thinking a problem through when the time is up and to present further ideas later, or even try the task again.

The challenges in this book emphasise creative and imaginative thinking and I'm very impressed with the author's ideas.

5 out of 5 stars Must have! Wish I'd had it years ago!.......2005-12-21

We're a homeschooling family, and have started using this book in our co-op. It's so amazing to watch the idea of "team" unfold as we go along. This book is fantastic, so well organized and well written, and full of so many different ideas, you're bound to find something unique that works for every personality. We've participated in Oddessey of the Mind in the past, and I think this book should be on every group leader's book shelf. If you like helping kids and adults learn to work together, this book will take you to new levels of cooperation, and will likely teach you more about yourself than you ever thought possible.

5 out of 5 stars Fun Stuff for Kids.......2005-12-11

This book is full of fun stuff for kids of all ages. The building and role playing activities work wonderfully as birthday party games and the verbal challenges are excellent diversions on long car trips. It's a very hands-on, exciting book to read--guaranteed to give you lots of good ideas. I have three children and recommend this book for anyone who has a big family.

5 out of 5 stars Indispensible Resource For Those Dealing with AD(H)D Student.......2000-04-08

This book is an invaluable aide for parents, educators, and professionals dealing with the challenges faced by AD(H)D students in school. It is a book that can be given directly to students as well. Written in a clear, visually appealing format, it presents worksheets and quick exercises that guide the late grade school, middle school or high school student to an understanding of how this disorder affects their ability to learn. It provides information such as how to choose and adopt various study techniques that will help children with AD(H)D become successful students. It coaches students in using active study techniques to remember what they read, or to develop written reports. Students are not resistant to using the concepts because of how they are presented and is a book that has application to non ADHD students as well. I highly recommend this workbook and have found it much more much more useful that the "Putting on the Brakes" book by the same authors. Of all the self help books I have lent out to people, this is one that people use so much they forget to return it! I just keep buying more copies because I don't want to be without the book.

4 out of 5 stars It makes sense to my students!.......2000-03-25

"Putting on the Break" has helped several of my students/clients understand what is really happening when they can not stop. One student's mom said, "This is the first time I see Laura interested in a book, any book. She explained why she has trouble paying attention like a pro. Thanks." The book gives the children a perspective they can relate to. Adults can be too wordy, the books helps them "see" and "feel" about ADHD. Thanks for making the book available in Spanish. We need more for the Spanish- speaking population.

I just started using this book 1 month ago with a developmentally handicapped class in our secondary school. I have been looking for months for suitable resources. I really recommend this book. The students are enjoying the discussions and completing the activities.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Resource!.......2005-02-01

I am a speech therapist working with special needs kids in high school and junior high. This is a wonderful resource full of information I can use with all my kids. The book is clearly sectioned into activities and concepts which can go beyond classroom objectives and into real life situations. I really enjoyed activities geared towards the older population covering more sensitive subjects such as alcohol, suicide and sex. The special needs population needs more hands on information covering these topics and this book presented the material in a easy to understand and practical manner. I was also really impressed with the extension activities provided and short exercises given with every subject. What a timesaver!!

    5 out of 5 stars Fabulous resource.......1999-08-31

Excellent source of activities for use with LEP population. Good for counseling end educational activities.

    4 out of 5 stars Great Ideas!.......1999-08-22

I have used this book to plan lessons for my secondary students who have severe cognitive disabilities. My main problem with the book is that it relies heavily on worksheets and activities that require the student to be able to read. Since my students do not read, these worksheets were not appropriate for me. I was able, however, to adapt and modify the ideas to meet my needs. As a reference tool for ideas, it is a great book.

Filled with great ideas and enthralling art activities, Young at Art introduces parents and caregivers to a fascinating world that Montessori teachers will find wonderfully familiar. Author Susan Striker created the delightfully different Anti-Coloring Book series and now turns her considerable talents to explaining concepts of child development in a manner that all of us can enjoy. She passionately believes that children can use artistic tools and methods as gateways to all forms of learning, from vocabulary building to early math skills and improved dexterity, and cautions parents to rethink the way we look at art materials. Pipe cleaners form wire sculptures far more detailed than their typical role as bug antenna, and toddlers can have a better experience painting with only one or two colors than they would with an entire palette that instantly turns a muddy brown. Including a wide range of group and individual activities for all age ranges (and even songs to sing during cleanup time), this book is a priceless addition to an art-loving family. Jill Lightner

    Book Description

An inspiring guide to encouraging creativity in preschool-age children. Young at Art is the first and only book about the value and impact of art on very young children. Directed toward parents and educators of one-to five-year-olds, Susan Striker explains why childrens art is not a frill but the very foundation upon which all later fundamental skills are built.

    5 out of 5 stars An excellent how-to book.......2007-03-15

If like me, you are a young mom trying to encourage your child's creativity to blossom, or even a preschool teacher, then this is definitely a worthwhile read...it comes with helpful strategies, and useful tips on how to promote creativity in young kids...and some ideas are common sense, but its upon reading the book that you really begin to see how other useful ideas might be implemented.

4 out of 5 stars Valuable insights and info on how to teach art to kids.......2006-08-12

I found this book to be very valuable even though I do not agree with 100% of her theories. She gives a great overview of several medium and as well as the actual products she recommends and the best way to teach children how to learn through art. I can see how my kids have already benefited.

Where do I disagree? While I agree that children need to be creative and explore on their own - I do not believe that the occasional coloring book or craft project is going to squash the child's creativity. My children definitely know the difference between their art time and the crafts they do at pre-school to learn about the American flag, holidays etc. And these craft projects that center around topics do reinforce concepts and help them learn - something the author is opposed to (she explicity says that children do not learn about holidays through craft projects where they make Christmas trees etc.)

In spite of disagreeing on this point I found the book to be excellent and would recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars excellent book from wonderful woman.......2006-07-08

Living near Susan Striker, I have had the opportunity to meet her on several occasions including having my oldest children (only at the time) participate in workshops with her. She is fabulous! The ideas in the book are easily incorporated and make a huge difference I think in inspiring children to work at their own level and enjoy the process. It has also helped me as a parent and home educator to feel more confident in guiding the process as well as selecting those rare excellent programs for children in art. Too many even "art schools" focus too much on the outcome or product. Doing it at home actually allows the children to be more of themselves. I also have personally witnessed the effects education wise on my children. My oldest is now 7 and reading at a junior high level. I followed this book and he was, on his own, writing his letters, name, etc at age 3 (well before his personal peer group) and I think this is because of the freedom giving to him in experimenting before then. His early markings were deemed valuable by us and so he kept wanting to do more and then copy us. I am purchasing another copy of this book for my sister and her just turning one year old son so they can enjoy art together as well.

5 out of 5 stars this book is an absolute must.......2006-04-27

quick but to the point: this book is an excellent resource for parents and teachers, of which i am both. it is developmentally appropriate and her theories can be used in any setting of children ranging from special needs right up to gifted. this book allows me to never say "what do i do now with my 2 1/2 year old daughter?"

5 out of 5 stars Any parent or teacher into art.......2006-02-27

This is a must have book for anyone who is teaching art especially to young children. I refer back to this book all the time. Best teaching book I own. The author who is a educator of the arts gives great lessons and advice.
