Book Description

Success is simple, and scientifically reproducible, if you know the 5 Laws

Simpleology proves that success and happiness are easier to achieve than most people think they are. In fact, people can almost guarantee their own success simply by following a few simple rules. These "5 Laws of Simpleology" aren't new; they've been around forever. Throughout history, these 5 laws have helped the world's greatest minds amass fortunes and forge new paths. But until now, no one has committed them to paper in so simple and straightforward a style as Mark Joyner has here. Applicable to any challenge or goal and irrefutably commonsense, these 5 laws form the basis for almost any successful person or endeavor. Simpleology explains the 5 laws in detail and shows readers how to apply them to every aspect of their lives.

Mark Joyner (Auckland, New Zealand) is a leading authority on Internet marketing. The former CEO of Aesop Marketing Corp., he is the author of four previous books, including The Irresistible Offer (0-471-73894-8) and The Great Formula (0-471-77823-0), both from Wiley.

This book is a quick read, so thumbs up for that. Conversely, it left no lasting impression. It does reference other material that is great.

5 out of 5 stars This man has got to write more books!.......2007-06-19

One of my favorite authors when it comes to business and marketing. I was absolutely blown away by his previous offerings of The Great Formula and The Irresistible Offer. I was familiar with his Simpleology site, but I did not appreciate it until I read this book. Be warned, you really must have an open mind to appreciate this work. It's not as easy to read as his previous books but when you start reaching the end of it, you'll put everything together and understand why the practice is called 'Simpleology'. Another gem and must read!

1 out of 5 stars Indeed really simplistic.......2007-06-16

234 pages of small talk to get to the "shocking" advice to think like an opportunist and go for it to be one

1 out of 5 stars Full of psycho-babble.......2007-06-14

I thought this book would tell me something that I didn't already know. Anyone who has taken a psych 101 course could regurgitate the babble that was written here. Most of the books that I read are very helpful and fulfill the hype- if you think that this book will make your life simple and allow you to get what you want, go somewhere else! Sorry Mark, but most people won't understand 3/4 of the book because you didn't write it in laymen's terms.

5 out of 5 stars Simpleology,The Real Deal!.......2007-06-08

I'm a big fan of Mark Joyner and all his work, but this time, upon reading his new book "Simpleology : The Simple Science of Getting What You Want",I was really shocked!!
It's unbelievable!
Honestly, this time Mark Joyner broke all the barriers,
passed all the boundaries,
I felt as if he is writing from inside my mind!

It's not just another theory book about success or mind or any regular topic,
it's a mind bomb that'll completely transform
the life of whoever read it!

I'm very glad to put a hand on something like this!

All Praise and Respect to Mark Joyner.

One can't help but be encouraged to leap into action and begin the processes described to create a new and exciting life. Because it mirrors many of the concepts we subscribe to at Pug At The Beach, I recommend it to our people here at Pug Headquarters. Sometimes all you need in life is the wisdom of a good dogTM or in this case, James Ray.

4 out of 5 stars James Ray is indeed the Rock Star of Life Coaching.......2007-05-15

This is a book that is easy to read and offers practical advice for expanding in all areas of one's life. For those who have read or seen "The Secret" this is a perfect companion book to learn about the other "Laws" that govern our living. I personally like more of a "challenge" as the book touches on most of these Laws as a Summary and overview and introspective questions to ask oneself (otherwise the book would be very very thick) so I think the material is perfect for those who are just beginning the "Secret" path. However, it is a fantastic introduction to James Ray, the Life Coach and Philosopher and I would strongly recommend you catch him "LIVE" at one of his Free Seminars he gives across the Country to go "deeper". He is funny, eloquent, magnetic, charismatic, no nonsense and inspiring.

5 out of 5 stars fantastic book.......2007-05-13

I would recommend this book to people who want to move forward in their lives and get "unstuck"

Based on his father's bestselling The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, Sean Covey applies the same principles to teens, using a vivacious, entertaining style. To keep it fun, Covey writes, he "stuffed it full of cartoons, clever ideas, great quotes, and incredible stories about real teens from all over the world... along with a few other surprises." Did he ever! Flip open to any page and become instantly absorbed in real-life stories of teens who have overcome obstacles to succeed, and step-by-step guides to shifting paradigms, building equity in "relationship bank accounts," creating action plans, and much more.

As a self-acknowledged guinea pig for many of his dad's theories, Sean Covey is a living example of someone who has taken each of the seven habits to heart: be proactive; begin with the end in mind; put first things first; think win-win; seek first to understand, then to be understood; synergize; and sharpen the saw. He includes a comical section titled "The 7 Habits of Highly Defective Teens," which includes some, shall we say, counterproductive practices: put first things last; don't cooperate; seek first to talk, then pretend to listen; wear yourself out... Covey's humorous and up-front style is just light enough to be acceptable to wary teenagers, and down-and-dirty enough to really make a difference. (Ages 13 and older) --Emilie Coulter

Book Description

Being a teenager is both wonderful and challenging. In The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens, author Sean Covey applies the timeless principles of the 7 Habits to teens and the tough issues and life-changing decisions they face. In an entertaining style, Covey provides a step-by-step guide to help teens improve self-image, build friendships, resist peer pressure, achieve their goals, get along with their parents, and much more. In addition, this book is stuffed with cartoons, clever ideas, great quotes, and incredible stories about real teens from all over the world. The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens will engage teenagers unlike any other book.

An indispensable book for teens, as well as parents, grandparents, and any adult who influences young people, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens is destined to become the last word on surviving and thriving as a teen and beyond.

5 out of 5 stars A must-have resource for all teens and their parents!.......2007-05-09

As a parent of a 13 year old boy I have recently begun to enter into some difficult and even treacherous terrain. After exhausting the resources of our local library, I came across Sean Covey's book and am eternally grateful for this gem. Both my son and I have read the book (more than once) and have continued to learn new techniques to help us tackle each new problem and stage that we encounter. Being a teen doesn't have to be a torment and what we learn in our youth will help to shape us into well-rounded adults. Through reading Seven Habits, my son has developed a healthy sense of self along with a healthy dose of respect for others and has begun to show a more motivated, confident disposition to his life and responsibilities. A worthwhile tool to make use of for youngsters and their care-givers!

5 out of 5 stars Can't get any better!.......2007-04-01

Everytime that i start reading this book, i find it impossible to put down. And i have read this book at more than 10 times. I don't see how it can get better because he combines all the possible examples and techniques in this book including: relating to his own experiences, images, imagination exercises, quoting outside sources, statistics, and more. He always speaks in a simple, yet complex manner easy for anyone to understand. I absolutely love the book and am completely empowered and feel as if i can do anything after reading this book!!

5 out of 5 stars The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens.......2007-01-18

My 15 yr old son, who struggles academically LOVES this book. It's very encouraging & helpful. I think the fact that he says he loves it, says it all!

5 out of 5 stars It really communicates to teens!.......2007-01-05

As a teacher in a continuation high school leardership class I selected this book for students only after reading it. It was recommended to me and before reading it I was skeptical. I had read many other books that were written by adults for kids; most were condescending and used an adult's version of what kids might want to hear. This book is different. Sean Covey brilliantly speaks to students at their level. Covey has been able to remove the barrier between author and reader so often found in these "help" books. I have since purchased other books to review and none of them could capture the students in my class.

5 out of 5 stars Seven Habits for Teens.......2007-01-04

This is an excellent book for 10 yrs and above. My daughter loves the examples and illustrations. She was reading it at school and insisted we get it so she could add notes. -- Highly recommended.

Book Description

The future belongs to a different kind of person with a different kind of mind: artists, inventors, storytellers-creative and holistic "right-brain" thinkers whose abilities mark the fault line between who gets ahead and who doesn't. Drawing on research from around the world, Pink outlines the six fundamentally human abilities that are absolute essentials for professional success and personal fulfillment-and reveals how to master them. A Whole New Mind takes readers to a daring new place, and a provocative and necessary new way of thinking about a future that's already here.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Reading and a must for all Entrepreneur .......2007-06-18

One of those books that will open up your thinking cords. Tells you where the shift is expected to happen in future. Where will you be when this happens. Are we thinking the same way?

5 out of 5 stars A Whole New Mind for Career Management.......2007-06-17

I can't imagine, especially if you are at mid-life, that you feel your job is really secure. You may even have a game plan for what to do should the pink slip find you. Well, if your plan included dusting off the ol' resume and going on the internet, it's time to rework the playbook. Dan Pink's book makes a compelling, albeit indirect, case for changing one's career management strategy from merely marketing transferable skills to offering a compelling and unique promise of value.

The premise of this book is that the Information Age, which was based on the Left Brain qualities of logic, sequence, and analysis, is giving way to a new Conceptual Age dominated by the simultaneous, contextual, big-picture capabilities of the right brain. In this new Conceptual Age, careers that rely most heavily on left brain capabilities are at risk of being automated, off-shored, or may simply produce outcomes that fall short of increased demand for products and services with an aesthetic and emotional appeal.

According to Pink, the key to delivering value in the Conceptual Age is to engage in work that involves high concept or high touch abilities. High concept includes creating artistic or emotional beauty or appeal, detecting patterns or opportunities, and producing a novel synthesis of seemingly unrelated ideas. High concept includes ability to empathize and grasp subtleties human interaction, find joy in oneself and others, and pursue purpose and meaning. High concept and high touch are right-brain directed capabilities that rely on six senses: design, story, symphony, empathy, play, and meaning.

Although Pink's book is not a career management book, the six senses seem to align well with career management using a personal branding approach; specifically:

- Design: going beyond the utility of your skill set to its significance and emotional appeal;
- Symphony: considering how your combined competencies and attributes contribute to your unique promise of value;
- Story: crafting messages to clearly communicate what you offer;
- Empathy: building a network of mutual benefit with others;
- Joy: identifying work you love where you can be yourself;
- Meaning: making a difference in the lives of the people you serve.

Of course, integrating these capabilities into managing you career is just the beginning. Increasingly, I believe, these capabilities will be the drivers for innovation and stand-out accomplishment in whatever position you have. And stand-out accomplishment demonstrates the unique and compelling value you deliver -- which, in turn, moves your career forward.

I highly recommend this book for the perspective it can provide on proactively managing your career.

5 out of 5 stars Read it now or lose later!.......2007-06-14

Author Daniel Pink is generous enough to reveal the clever secrets on how to thrive now and in the near future, and he is eeringly right about everything he says. The book contains a wealth of useful, hands on information, and it finally gives the artistic mind the importance it deserves. Read it now or lose later!

5 out of 5 stars Loved it.......2007-05-28

Very insighful and a must read for IT folks trying to keep up with an ever changing work place. We can't just write code anymore we have to bring value.

5 out of 5 stars The Big Pink 6.......2007-05-25

There is a great deal of information in this book that is well known. One may sit and say to oneself, "Great, tell me something I don't know." However, when you take a step back and see how the author synthesized all the obvious information you will see how brilliant of an idea he has. He has come up with 6 basic principles (design, story, play, symphony, empathy, meaning) that must be applied in order to get ahead in the business world, global or local.

It has been over a year since I read this book but I still use the principles today. This book is for ANYONE in ANY occupation. All you have to do is take his information and SYNTHESIZE it with your life/occupation. And that is the point of this book. Virtually all ideas are not "original." They are merely a synthesizing of past inventions. So, look around you, use what is readily accessable and repackage it using the six principles.

I am a teacher, and I have synthesized and run through the checklist of the "Big Pink 6," as I call them, into substitute lesson plans, regular lessons, projects, and then even in family vacations, running our household, raising our children, exercising, etc., etc.

Book Description

Praise for THE SCIENCE OF SUCCESS

"Evaluating the success of an individual or company is a lot like judging a trapper by his pelts. Charles Koch has a lot of pelts. He has built Koch Industries into the world's largest privately held company, and this book is an insider's guide to how he did it. Koch has studied how markets work for decades, and his commitment to pass that knowledge on will inspire entrepreneurs for generations to come."
—T. Boone Pickens

"A must-read for entrepreneurs and corporate executives that is also applicable to the wider world. MBM is an invaluable tool for engendering excellence for all groups, from families to nonprofit entities. Government leaders could avoid policy failures by heeding the science of human behavior."
—Richard L. Sharp, Chairman, CarMax

"My father, Sam Walton, stressed the importance of fundamental principles—such as humility, integrity, respect, and creating value—that are the foundation for success. No one makes a better case for these principles than Charles Koch."
—Rob Walton, Chairman, Wal-Mart

"What accounts for Koch Industries' spectacular success? Charles Koch calls it Market-Based Management: a vision that nurtures personal qualities of humility and integrity that build trust and the confidence to enhance future success through learning from failure, and a culture of thinking in terms of opportunity cost and comparative advantage for all employees."
—Vernon Smith, 2002 Nobel laureate in economics

"In a very thoughtful, creative, and understandable way, Charles Koch explains how he has used the science of human behavior to create a culture that has produced one of the world's largest and most successful private companies. A must-read for anyone interested in creating value."
—William B. Harrison Jr., Former Chairman and CEO, JPMorgan Chase & Co.

"The same exacting thought, rooted in the realities of human nature, that the framers of the U.S. Constitution put into building a nation of entrepreneurs, Charles Koch has framed to build an enduring company of entrepreneurs—a company larger than Microsoft, Dell, HP, and other giants. Every entrepreneur should study this book."
—Verne Harnish, founder, Young Entrepreneurs' Organization, author of Mastering the Rockefeller Habits, CEO, Gazelles Inc.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable and Intriging.......2007-06-17

While I don't think all the quotes credited to members of the Koch family were actually given birth by them, this is an interesting, albeit self-serving book.

Having said that, most anyone who writes about his own business is going to be self-serving. So one can't be condemned for that.

If you're interested in bringing success into your organization, you need to read this book. It gives you a unique look at a truly successful business and the basic philosophy that is alleged to have created and maintained it.

I had a bit of a problem with the author when he expressed his belief of doing business on a handshake. In today's world that's not something I would want to try. I'm a firm believer in a good contract to prevent most of the problems that can come up in even the best relationships.

But one doesn't have to agree with everything he reads as no one person is necessarily right. Nor is one way of doing business a good fit for everyone.

Koch Industries is indeed a highly respected company. The family is reputed to have fought a good deal over control and money yet the book makes the family sound very close. But, again, the author wants to put the best light on things and perhaps as we get older we only want to recall the good.

Nonetheless, this is a good read. It's short. It won't take long to read and you probably will dig out a gem or two that you can use and capitalize on.

The Koch family (at least the author) is a free market thinker and holds to libertarian beliefs. As a free market thinker and libertarian myself, I understand and appreciate this style of capitalism. You'll find that in this book. And that's a good thing.

5 out of 5 stars Thoughtful and Enlightening.......2007-06-14

In his book, Mr. Koch has succeeded in making me think in new ways about business, personal responsibility, and the ways in which we can better society. While it was easy to understand the enlightened self-interest concepts of good business, the MBM was totally new to me, with its concepts and ways of approaching business challenges and opportunities. It provides a disciplined, yet flexible structure to use when making business decisions, ranging from hiring employees, to evaluating their value of production (to themselves, their company and society), and determining their compensation.

I especially like the way he contrasted Marx's famous statement on the communist system with MBM's "From each according to his ability, to each according to his contribution." I was also impressed with the wide range of books he has studied and quoted in the book. I also liked the way he highlighted and set apart certain principles by darkening them, ensuring that they are read more carefully.

In other words, I greatly enjoyed the book. It stretched my brain. He made it interesting, enlightening and fun to read.

5 out of 5 stars Markets Work, even in firms.......2007-06-01

Charles G. Koch is the most important businessman you have never heard of.

For that matter, Koch is likely to prove to be the most significant figure in American business in our lifetimes, and that is saying a lot.

Koch is not the wealthiest man alive--Bill Gates still has that title locked up--but his business achievements are certainly the most remarkable. While Gates has amassed his fortune by being the best businessman in an emerging and vital industry, Koch has built the world's largest private company ($30 billion or so in value) in bread and butter industries such as oil refining, animal feed, and paper products where the competition is fierce and product substitution is easy.

Under Charles Koch's leadership, the family business (appropriately named Koch Industries) has increased in value at a steady clip--ten times faster than the Standard and Poor's 500. In Good to Great (another outstanding business book) Jim Collins used a benchmark of growing three times faster than the Market as the mark of a great company.

Koch has bested that growth rate by about 300%. Not bad.
But what makes Charles G. Koch the most important figure in American business today, or perhaps ever, is not the uniqueness of his achievements at all; it is the fact that Koch argues, mostly successfully, that his achievements are not a fluke at all, or even due to some special genius on his part. Instead Koch argues that his secret, if you could call it that, is that he has followed a Science of Success.

And better yet, Koch has written one of the definitive books on business in order to share his insights with the next generation. The Science of Success ((c) Koch Industries, 2007: John Wiley & Sons) will quickly become must reading for MBA students and others interested in making a go of it in business.

Readers looking for an easy-to-follow recipe for success will be disappointed, however. Success may have a science, but it still doesn't have the easy-to-follow recipe that every self-help book reader is looking for. Instead Koch shares with his readers the basic principles of what works and why, drawing heavily upon the insights of great thinkers such as Thomas Hobbes, Michel Polanyi, F. A. Hayak, Ludwig Von Mises, Peter Drucker--well, you get the idea: anyone and everyone who has had any insight into the human condition and what makes us tick.

Koch synthesizes his insights into an intellectual structure he calls Market Based Management(tm). And while Koch delineates a coherent set of principles and benchmarks to aid the aspiring manager along the path to success, the basic principle is one that ought to be familiar to anyone who has lived through the triumph of market-based societies over socialist and fascist regimes: markets are a very powerful force, and when unleashed are unmatched at productivity and the improvement of the human lot.

Charles Koch's great insight--the foundation of the amazing success of Koch Industries--is that this fact is as true within firms as it is in the economy as a whole. Using a competitive market model as a management structure unleashes the same forces as you see when market economies compete against planned economies.

And most large corporations are planned economies. Autocratic, intolerant of creativity and dissent, and run largely for the benefit of an elite few.

Looked at in this way, is it any wonder that a student of Austrian economists could run circles around the largest publicly-traded companies in the world? Matching Koch Industries up against a large publicly-traded company in today's world is like matching up the Free World against the Socialist World. He couldn't help out competing them, because his company was managed using Market Based Management(tm) (MBM).

My one quibble with the book, if you can call it that, is not so much with the substance of what Koch so generously teaches, but with his unspoken assumption that the tools he is giving us will be enough to vault us to success.
In other words, he takes too little credit for the success of Koch Industries. While it is true that his insights--if understood and acted upon by corporations--will revolutionize how business is done, it is also true that many of his readers will not be up to the task of implementing MBM. It would require the elites who benefit from the nearly socialist structure of today's large corporations to yield power, and I fear that many will never do so.

It will be left to the disciples of Koch and Market Based Management(tm) to consign them to the dustbin of history through their superior productivity and success.

5 out of 5 stars Learn new tricks, update old ones.......2007-05-31

A young dog has new tricks to learn and an old dog, at a minimum, has old tricks that could use some updating. The Science of Success, which explains and explores Koch Industries' Market-based Management®, offers leaders at any point in their career, at any kind of organization, both new tricks and polish. The book's value is inversely proportional to the short time it takes to read.

One thread through The Science of Success, though not always overtly stated, is the importance of clear and honest communication. Business is about relationships, be they internal or external. And, as in personal relationships, those that endure typically are the ones where open communication is the rule. This cannot be understated. Ask Dr. Phil.

From a personnel and management perspective, the "Decision Rights" chapter provoked thinking, in particular the section "Roles, Responsibilities and Expectations" (RR&Es). Charles Koch writes, each "employee's RR&Es should focus on value creation and be tailored to his or her individual comparative advantages and opportunities." He continues, "A role is not a job title." My selection of this commonsense snippet does little justice to the worth of the chapter. There is much value in the discussion about decision-making, who gets it and why.

The "Incentives" chapter offers gems. One concept that stood out: "Within limits, the profits forgone from a missed opportunity should be considered the same as losses from a failed venture." This chapter also delves into risk-taking and how Koch Industries fosters it, something difficult to do in a large organization, let alone a smaller entity, be it a for- or non-profit.

Near the end of The Science of Success an example is highlighted that underscores the importance of open communication, in the broadest of definitions, to the process of discovery and, ultimately, an organization's success. The example: putting together a large puzzle. To speed task completion, the best arrangement is to involve a "number of helpers" and "let them work on putting the puzzle together in sight of the others so that every time a piece is fitted in by one helper, all the others will immediately watch out for the next step that becomes possible in sequence. Under this system, each helper will act on his own initiative, by responding to the latest achievement of the others, and the completion of their joint task will be greatly accelerated."

This is a simple principle. However, to implement and maintain it successfully is another thing.

To improve the book, I think it should include several short case studies. The brief examples of opportunities that went south or succeeded were just enough to whet the mental appetite.

The Science of Success demonstrates how the principles of liberty and free markets have helped guide Koch Industries' management in its long-term success, while simultaneously creating social and economic value for people throughout the U.S. and world. We would all be much better off if those who penned public policy could understand these same principles and would vote -- or not -- accordingly.

5 out of 5 stars Sound Business Principles.......2007-05-28

Koch delivers sound business principles with simplicity. Anyone that Forbes estimates is worth $12B must have done something right in business. Sometimes simplicity comes from years of complexity. A foundational text for a capitalist.

4 out of 5 stars Solid Positive Tips.......2007-06-15

This is an entertaining and easy read that takes a very upbeat approach and tone, and encourages the reader to "fill their bucket" with positive action. Sometimes a bit simplistic, but overall a good book. Reader would also benefit from honing their "Warrior Tools" in Warriors, Workers, Whiners, & Weasels: Understanding and Using The Four Personality Types To Your Advantage, which also offers postive advice on personal improvement.

4 out of 5 stars A Full Bucket Beats An Empty Bucket!.......2007-06-02

This book is a quick read and has one main message: Your life will be better if you have a positive outlook and try to find ways to help others. The authors have spent a lifetime of living the examples that they site, and have reaped the positive results. In this book they share stories about themselves and others....and encourage the reader to avoid negativity.

While this message is simple, it is so easy in today's society to be a "taker" and empty your bucket with negative thoughts and actions. Additionally, you will encounter others who will "dip" into your bucket and sap you of the joy you desire. To avoid this, everyone needs to find ways to focus on the positive strategies for work and life that Roth and Clifton have outlined in this book.

"Learning the game of power requires a certain way of looking at the world, a shifting of perspective," writes Robert Greene. Mastery of one's emotions and the arts of deception and indirection are, he goes on to assert, essential. The 48 laws outlined in this book "have a simple premise: certain actions always increase one's power ... while others decrease it and even ruin us."

The laws cull their principles from many great schemers--and scheming instructors--throughout history, from Sun-Tzu to Talleyrand, from Casanova to con man Yellow Kid Weil. They are straightforward in their amoral simplicity: "Get others to do the work for you, but always take the credit," or "Discover each man's thumbscrew." Each chapter provides examples of the consequences of observance or transgression of the law, along with "keys to power," potential "reversals" (where the converse of the law might also be useful), and a single paragraph cleverly laid out to suggest an image (such as the aforementioned thumbscrew); the margins are filled with illustrative quotations. Practitioners of one-upmanship have been given a new, comprehensive training manual, as up-to-date as it is timeless.

Book Description

Amoral, cunning, ruthless, and instructive, this piercing work distills three thousand years of the history of power in to forty-eight well explicated laws. As attention--grabbing in its design as it is in its content, this bold volume outlines the laws of power in their unvarnished essence, synthesizing the philosophies of Machiavelli, Sun-tzu, Carl von Clausewitz, and other great thinkers. Some laws teach the need for prudence ("Law 1: Never Outshine the Master"), the virtue of stealth ("Law 3: Conceal Your Intentions"), and many demand the total absence of mercy ("Law 15: Crush Your Enemy Totally"), but like it or not, all have applications in real life. Illustrated through the tactics of Queen Elizabeth I, Henry Kissinger, P. T. Barnum, and other famous figures who have wielded--or been victimized by--power, these laws will fascinate any reader interested in gaining, observing, or defending against ultimate control.

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining read - great stories and some applicable principles .......2007-06-15

The 48 Laws of Power is written in a very peculiar format with a number of stories that support each law, as well as plenty of quotes, located on on the margin of the pages, from Machiavelli, Baltasar Gracián, Sun Tsu and many others. I have read complaints that many of these laws seem to contradict each other and perhaps they are right, however, the laws are more like a tactical approach to augment power and tactics do not work in every circumstance, that's why we need to have a strong arsenal of them. I assume that the term "laws" was used to make the title more appealing and marketable. Others have characterized this book's message as irresponsible, greedy and reprehensible. But the Author clearly states that this is merely an account of the tactics that have been used by countless kings, rulers, politicians and leaders, he never claims that they are moral or right, he simply states that they have worked in the past.

Overall this book is thoroughly entertaining and many of the "laws" do have practical applications, others, however, go against my values and therefore I only read for the interesting stories. I thoroughly recommend this book, throughout the years I have referenced this book many times.

One of the laws that I remember clearly is Law #4 "Always say less than necessary" and in that spirit I end this review. Enjoy!

2 out of 5 stars Fundamentally flawed.......2007-06-13

This book is fundamentally flawed because it offers incorrect advise to its primary audience. Furthermore, the book does not clearly state the premises for using Greene's type of power and obscures the global structure of power. There are many different kinds of power, so this book makes you blind to all other forms of power by focusing exclusively on selfish, cloak-and-dagger power.

A relevant social question is why selfish, cloak-and-dagger power is apparently relevant in our society, or in Machiavelli's era, or in the court of Louis XIV. I would postulate that all three of these cultures share an atmosphere of fog and deception which allows such forms of power to flourish. Specifically, in our culture, mass media and corporate culture encourage such behavior.

If you are interested in having power, you might well ask whether the route outlined in this book is worth following. I believe that those who are submerged in corporate culture or in the business of mass media may find the advice of this book useful for gaining perhaps a factor of two in power within their current organization, however, it is mathematically implausible for the typical person using Greene's method to gain much more power in such a hierarchy. The fundamental limitation to Greene's power is that only so many people can successfully use encompassing webs of deception to rise to the top of a given power structure: if you imagine that the typical corporation or media conglomerate is a binary tree and like most people you are on the bottom of the tree, even if 5% of the people in an organization use Greene's power to "climb" in their hierarchy then you realize that it is mathematically implausible for the average Greene-follower to rise more than one or two levels. Actually, it's statistically impossible to rise more than one or two levels using any strategy, but Greene's is actively dangerous because it may get you in trouble and because the cloud of people using Greene's techniques at the top of any power structure are guaranteed to be far better than you at their "game" -- they've been brought up to be this way, educated since childbirth. As a practical example, my father worked in the technical corporate world for 25 years with many outstanding talents such as Ph.D. MIT graduates and doesn't know a single person who has moved up more than 3 levels in the hierarchy. I suspect that some of these people tried Greene's methods and failed, but really, you don't want to be in the business of fighting an uphill battle against mathematics or statistics. How do you gain power in a corporation starting from the bottom? Mu.

If you are at the bottom of a hierarchy and have talent and wish to gain power then Greene's strategy is the worst strategy you could use in America. To gain power in America starting from nothing, you have to mint it yourself, by working for yourself, or else examine the questions of power and happiness more closely.

When you get down to it, Greene is really offering advice on happiness: he says, "[If you try to opt out of the game], this will only render you powerless, and powerlessness will make you miserable." His whole book is built on this assumption.

But what is happiness?

I believe that Greene follows his own advise rather than answering this question directly and honestly. In other words, he wrote a contentious book that would generate popular sales rather than answering the question plainly. It is a manifest truth that if you start out with stupid assumptions then you will fill your life with garbage and become unhappy. Thomas Jefferson said as much: "All experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed."

To be happy requires that you master your insecurities, abolish the social forms which you have grown accustomed to, and gain power over yourself.

Greene dodges the question: he falls into the trap of insecurity and the ability of people to have power over each other; this is equated with happiness. He doesn't talk at all about gaining power over yourself. Greene certainly gives his target audience the answer that they want to hear about lying and cheating in corporations, but he doesn't give the true answer.

To gain power over yourself you need to decouple yourself from the mechanisms that place you in a position of slave-to-master. One simple way to gain power over yourself is to stop working. Another is to work for yourself. If you increase your income relative to the cost of living then you have also increased your power over yourself. Often this is best accomplished by moving elsewhere and taking a job that pays less.

If you wish to start a company then I would recommend Paul Graham's essays. If you wish to stop working then you may wish to read the works of Thoreau, D. JoAnne Swanson, or Bob Black. If you wish to gain a handle on how the social mechanisms of power work in our era then read a book about the internal structure of mass media. If you want to be sociable by reading Greene's book because it's popular then go ahead, but it will not educate you about having power over yourself, happiness, or the structure of power in the modern world.

5 out of 5 stars A PHD crash course in social manipulation.......2007-06-07

In today's business world, to be naive and "play the nice guy and get along with everyone" will get you nowhere fast, and may very well get you crushed. Greene has written several best sellers on understanding and influencing social interaction, and this one is my personal favorite. Use or be used is a accurate summation of what you will learn here. Some of the insights are no less than profound. All of them at the very least will have you analyzing things that occurred in your past that you could have handled more effectively. The things that flew below the radar and bit your in the rear will be very clear to see after reading this book.

When you understand hidden intentions, thoughts, and desires people have when they speak to you, you can respond with what is best for you, as opposed to being influenced against your desires. Understanding the 48 laws and re-reading them over and over with accelerate your success no matter what field you are in.

You will see through bosses, brokers, and salesman in two seconds, as they push you with subtle aggressive hints, massage your ego, all to see how much you allow them to get away with.

1 out of 5 stars scripture of a demon.......2007-06-04

to be honest, this book is exactly what is wrong with society. This should be the book of how not to live your life. It is written, it seems, with bad intentions. I do not recomend this book.

2 out of 5 stars Power.......2007-06-03

Very poor book, if one used any of these concepts in the modern world I doubt they would work (actually I know they don't work).

The author seems to have no idea about the concept of accountability.

Mostly unethical, greedy, irresponsible, unaccountable ideas.

No modern examples, all from ancient China, Greece, Middle and Renaissance Italy, France, etc.

There is not much about the concept of power in this book.

Will finish it just to ensure I don't act or behave like any of these exmaples.

Sandra Ann Taylor has written a very clear and easy to read book.... Drawing upon the secrets of manifestation, she articulates the universal power wonderfully... I would certainly advise anyone who is looking at applying the principles and secrets of the univeral energies to read and apply the techniques presented here....

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book!!!!.......2007-06-27

This is a fantastic book and was an absolute page turner I just could not put the book down. I also have another book from the same book so I knew it would be a good book. This I believe is her best book and would recommend to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing journey which can change your life .......2007-06-19

Sandra Taylor's book on attraction is by far the best source I have read regarding this topic. The book includes many scientific principles from phase entanglement to paradoxical intent. The book is informative and contains many tools one can implement into a daily lifestyle. After reading the book, I found my self inspired and motivated to change and enhance my life. The book is quick paced and not at all repetitive and boring as one reviewer noted. IF YOU HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR A BOOK TO HELP YOU ACHIEVE THE LIFE YOU WANT AND DESERVE, THIS IS IT.

2 out of 5 stars Repetitive and boring.......2007-06-02

I had high expectations for this title after reading the glowing reviews here on Amazon. Before I read it, the book seemed to fit in perfectly with my personal journey of self-exploration. I have read several titles on the subject and I suppose I wanted a book that covered the subject matter more thoroughly. Afterall, it is easy to be impressed with the subject, but actually making it stick in your mind is an entirely different matter, one I hoped this book would aid me with.

The book did not deliver. I found it boring and over the top repetitive. Instead of being more thorough it merely repeats the same basic things over and over again, presenting it as new information in following chapters. Trust me, a few times you can bare, but 2/3s into the book it really gets annoying.

It is also not very practical: besides offering affirmations (which you could no doubt formulate yourself and are so mushy / utopian in nature that your mind just won't wrap around it) it doesn't hand you any other tools. If you didn't need any you wouldn't have to read the book in the first place, which just makes me wonder what the point of this book is.

It won't do as an introduction to the matter, for that you need a quick & lively presentation, which -its various flaws aside- "The Secret" delivers much more effectively.
It won't do as a more thorough title to enforce your new found beliefs. And if you have certain personal problems (like a lack of self-esteem), they won't be adressed and without overcoming them, you won't be able to fully integrate the muddled message of this book in your system.

I put it aside, one of the rare occassions where I can't even get myself to finish the book.

5 out of 5 stars Scientifically Verifiable.......2007-06-02

Quantum Success is all about personal life transformation and empowerment based on the latest scientifically verifiable findings of quantum physics.

Sandra Taylor clearly explains how to tap into the power that can manifest your dreams so that you can live a more authentic, totally self-expressed and joyous life. The strategies are simple, practical and sure to create amazing results.

The Science of Getting Rich

THIS book is pragmatical, not philosophical; a practical manual, not a treatise upon theories. It is intended for the men and women whose most pressing need is for money; who wish to get rich first, and philosophize afterward. It is for those who have, so far, found neither the time, the means, nor the opportunity to go deeply into the study of metaphysics, but who want results and who are willing to take the conclusions of science as a basis for action, without going into all the processes by which those conclusions were reached. It is expected that the reader will take the fundamental statements upon faith, just as he would take statements concerning a law of electrical action if they were promulgated by a Marconi or an Edison; and, taking the statements upon faith, that he will prove their truth by acting upon them without fear or hesitation. Every man or woman who does this will certainly get rich; for the science herein applied is an exact science, and failure is impossible. For the benefit, however, of those who wish to investigate philosophical theories and so secure a logical basis for faith, I will here cite certain authorities. The monistic theory of the universe the theory that One is All, and that All is One; That one Substance manifests itself as the seeming many elements of the material world -is of Hindu origin, and has been gradually winning its way into the thought of the western world for two hundred years. It is the foundation of all the Oriental philosophies, and of those of Descartes, Spinoza, Leibnitz, Schopenhauer, Hegel, and Emerson. The reader who would dig to the philosophical foundations of this is advised to read Hegel and Emerson for himself. In writing this book I have sacrificed all other considerations to plainness and simplicity of style, so that all might understand. The plan of action laid down therein was deduced from the conclusions of philosophy; it has been thoroughly tested, and bears the supreme test of practical experiment; it works. If you wish to know how the conclusions were arrived at, read the writings of the authors mentioned above; and if you wish to reap the fruits of their philosophies in actual practice, read this book and do exactly as it tells you to do.

The Science of Being Great

"... in Mr. Wattles' book, "THE SCIENCE OF BEING GREAT", you will get methods, plans, carefully outlined instruction, for the highest self-development and training for efficient living."

&

The Science of Being Well

If you are well this book will tell you how to keep so. If you are seeking better health this book is for you. _

4 out of 5 stars Science of Getting Rich, Great & Well.......2007-05-16

This trio of books - really more like long essays is a quick read. It is very interesting to see the beginnings of the current "Secret" craze in this early 1900's work. Some of the examples are antiquated due to the period during which it was written, but the basic tenets are very much in line with current abundance and prosperity works I have read. Editors notes help to explain some of the prevalent thinking at the time the books were written.

5 out of 5 stars The Wisdon of Wallace D. Wattles.......2007-05-08

Very well put together. If you like his work you will appreciate three in one. This is the book that launched THE SECRET.

4 out of 5 stars Off autopilot, without glitz, and without drama.......2007-04-17

I was disappointed to read the reviews of those who did not feel enriched by the Wattles work. But I was enlightened. One poor fellow even lists items that he does not recognize as being viable components of the recommendations. Wow. Now I understand WHY 'The Secret' is such a hit. The techno-reverberating spoon-feed with interpretation and driving force is just necessary to break through so many engrained barriers.

Some fault-finders are unimpressed with the simplicity of the teachings, so I am lead to think they are NOT victims of teachings about how it is a paramount sin to be wealthy, because only those who abuse others can be wealthy. Unfortunately, I hear that from folks constantly --folks who are confining themselves to limited lifestyles by assuming that having less or being powerless guarantees some future home in heaven.

The folks who MOST need Wattles' health perspective (IMHO) are so busy telling the world about their aches and pains, seeing pricey specialists, and electing surgeries, they cannot IMAGINE living without pain, or even TRYING to demand more of life. It takes a rare capability to look at your own behavior and discern where you may be shooting yourself in the foot.

I hope everyone will take note of the remarks of BOTH naysayers and praisers so that they can approach these ideas with an open and inquisitieve mind, knowing that the impact could fall in either court. The Science of Getting Rich is not a get-rich-quick scheme, it is a how-to for living prosperously, as '..Being Well' is a how-to living in a healthy way. The value of the written (spoken) word depends on the reader (listener); whether you can recognize changes in your lifestyle that might improve your quality of life.

My comments concern the original Wattles printed work, not the mp3.
I give the material 4 stars only because of the aforementioned (earlier reviewer's remarks) low quality in typesetting and reproduction, so the mp3 has potential of being excellent, depending upon the voice and expression of the reader.

Book Description

The Science of Getting Rich is a classic inspirational and financial book authored by Wallace D. Wattles. This book works as a guide to individuals who are interested in uncovering the secrets of getting rich through strategies and case studies. A timeless title such as this one should not be passed up by anybody who is interested in learning how to become wealthy. This book has often been compared to the Napoleon Hill book, Think and Grow Rich, and works well as a companion to that title.

This book will without any doubt change your life, by changing your mind about the concept of "money". So many of us were brought up with the idea of money as a finite resource, which you had to compete for. This book is desgined to release every preconcieved idea that is holding us all back from wealth. The basic premise of this book is that becoming wealthy is a science, that once understood, and replicated will create wealth in everyone's life. Wealth is as infinite as the creative mind. Create ideas, take action and abundance will flow.

Don't let your inner scrooge, suspicious little person, insignificant fly of a 'logical brain' (when compared to the real YOU ~ the instinctual one) get in the way of you recognizing and accepting this book as almost a Masterpiece. The way that it is written, devoid of any judgement of the reader, and full...FULL of concern/encouragement/in short - love - is unmatched. whoever this Wattles is, may the Lord Ble$$ him in all ways.

1 out of 5 stars Embarrassing New-Age Nonsense from 100 Years Ago.......2007-06-24

I've read literally hundreds of books on philosophy, science, metaphysics, and money over the last few years; some good and others not so good. This book is the one and only one I've ever tossed in the trash the moment I finished it. It's an irrational, illogical, and unscientific take on wealth building. It essentially states as a first principle that if you wish hard enough for something then the unified mind of the universe will make it yours in some manner out of the void. Well guess what folks - there's no such thing as magic in the real world. You have to work for what you want if you want to get it. In addition, the book is decidedly unscientific in that it demands blind faith in the above first principle that must be accepted without question (not permitted in science). Waddles says you must ignore any doubts you have and put them out of your mind without exploring them or considering the possibility that your doubts might be correct. That is not science: it's religion, and Waddles demands that the religious beliefs he espouses be obeyed exactly and without question.

The book reads like a sermon rather than any sort of science text, and you will not learn anything more than a good therapist could teach you about training your mind to improve your life - and probably a whole lot less. Waddles was writing in the days before psychotherapy was widespread, and he approaches the mind from a magical-thinking perspective that is embarrassingly naive compared to what we know today. Avoid this book; you can't learn to think from an author that doesn't understand what logic, science, and reason really are.

Also, do yourself a favor and don't waste your time on "The Secret" either. It's essentially a rehash of the ideas of this book and in my opinion is also nonsense. If you want to learn how to think in a way that gets you ahead, I recommend reading "The Richest Man in Babylon" by George Clason, and then "The Millionaire Mind" by Thomas J. Stanley. They are much better places to start.

A must read. A must read--- should be taught in grade school.

5 out of 5 stars The Science of Getting Rich.......2007-06-12

Wallace Wattles has it right on, you have to really want the information that is in the book to benefit. Once you understand the intention of his message there is nothing that can ever hold you back.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Insightful Look.......2007-06-08

I have listened to this CD over and over and there's nothing quite like it. Mr. Wattles gets to the point without any 'fluff' and since this was written almost 100 years ago, it's still very applicable today. I would recommend this to anyone who (1) doesn't have time to sit and read a book and (2) wants to get the absolute facts on getting rich and how it's possible if these instructions are followed.
