5 out of 5 stars Writing Tools-50 Essential Strategies for Every Writer.......2007-06-08

This book is as informative as advertised. An easy read, that encourages aspiring writers to 'get on with it' and keeps writer on the right track.

5 out of 5 stars A clear, accessible guide to writing techniques .......2007-06-05

This book is a clear and accessible guide to the techniques of journalistic and creative non-fiction writing. Novices and experienced writers alike will find it useful for learning new techniques to strengthen their writing. Later, it will also serve as a handy reference for getting unstuck creatively or adding impact to a piece.

5 out of 5 stars Youe Not Writing For the Ages. .......2007-04-21

Clark passes Richard Feynman's test for competence: If you cant express what you know in a paragraph or so, you dont know what youre talking about.

Clark competently assembles many helpful hints for writing clear and compelling prose. The book is liberally seasoned with excellent examples that illustrate his points.

The book wont help you write for "The Ages." But that's not a skill anyone can teach.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource.......2007-02-16

This will go on my shelf right next to Strunk & White's Elements of Style and Zinsser's On Writing Well. A super resource, great reading, and easy to use - you'll refer to it again and again. As an added bonus, the end of each chapter offers you the opportunity to practice the writing tool addressed in that chapter with several suggestions, such as finding a piece of writing in an article from a newspaper or magazine and analyzing it to see how a professional writer has used (or failed to use) the tool being discussed. Another suggestion offered includes taking a piece of your own writing and applying the strategy to it. It is on the writing professors' required list at our local college, and is a "tool" that's well worth the investment.

5 out of 5 stars Baking better prose.......2007-02-07

Maybe the best way for me to describe Roy Clark's Writing Tools 50 Essential Strategies for Every Writer is to use the following analogy: I can bake good brownies. Not the world's best brownies, but they get the job done - brownie-wise, that is. I'd like to make better brownies, but I'm not sure what I should do differently. Better cocoa? Smaller pan? More butter? I never know what to change, so I just keep making the same mediocre brownies. The same applies to my writing. I know it could be better - I just can't figure out how to change it.
Enter Mr. Clark's wise and wonderful book, Writing Tools 50 Essential Strategies for Every Writer, and suddenly I've got a myriad of new ideas! Clark gives struggling and aspiring writers a neatly organized "toolbox" full of models, practices, examples, and "what-not-to-dos." Conveniently arranged into four sections, each portion of the book addresses different spheres of writing. The first, "Nuts and Bolts" concentrates on the building blocks of writing - the words, sentences and paragraphs. I found there to be an arithmetic quality to this first section, almost as if Clark was imparting the equations and theorems of good writing.
Toolbox number two, "Special Effects," delves into the less concrete world of how we use language. He identifies it as "tools of economy, clarity, originality and persuasion." In this section he explores all of the tools, or devices a writer can use to help the writer shape his or her authentic voice.
"Blueprints," the title of the third toolbox discusses the structure of stories and reports. If a writer intends to take his readers on a path of discovery, enlightenment and wonder then the writer must be able to construct a trail that is enticing, engaging and well-lit. The tools of this third section discuss different kinds of narratives, foreshadowing and the dreaded "outline."
The final section, "Useful Habits" is generous and supportive therapy for the would-be writer. With sage and gentle advice, Clarke reassures us that we are not alone in our bad habits, urges us to learn from our critics and challenges us to "own the tools of our craft."
A special note: Don't miss either the afterword or the dedication. And if you don't know who Donald Murray was, find out. It can only help your writing.

5 out of 5 stars ...a just-the-facts-ma'am reference book every writer needs to add to his or her bookshelf........2007-05-08

If it wasn't sacrilegious, the Christian Writers' Market Guide could be called the Bible of Christian publishing. Instead, it's self-tagged "The Essential Reference Tool for the Christian Writer". Listing 354 book publishers and 740 periodicals (not to mention 120 literary agents), that's an apt description. Each listing provides everything you need to know including website addresses, word count preferences, how to request guidelines, tips on submitting, average first printing (for book publishers), circulation (for magazines), and much more.

The Guide's format hasn't changed a whole lot over the years (I keep waiting for an update to the old fashioned typeface). But as the saying goes, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. And the Christian Writer's Market Guide is certainly not broke. It's a no-nonsense, just-the-facts-ma'am reference book every writer needs to add to his or her bookshelf.

Always informative is Sally Stuart's "state of the industry" introduction. This year she talks about how twenty years ago, when she first started the guide, each publisher had an address and phone number. Few had faxes, and of course none had e-mail. Now, a growing number of publishers don't even provide their mailing address since all correspondence is done electronically.

Several noteworthy additions to this year's Guide: The addition of an "Art---Freelance" category in the book topics section. Over 280 new entries in the 70 page "Resources for Writers" section. Entries in the book section now indicate what formats a publisher publishes (i.e. hardcover, trade paper, etc.) And a bonus CD-ROM with .pdf and Word files of the entire guide.

At first I questioned why the publishers would include a CD-ROM without putting the information into a spreadsheet format. But then two words came to mind: search ability. Even in a text document the wonderful "Ctrl F" function comes to the aid of writers every day. So in the Guide's case, if I'm searching for say, Christianity Today, a quick "find" brings me to the listing. And writers can also cut and paste individual listings into separate documents to print out later, eliminating the need to hand write all those potential publishers for your novel.

The only drawback to a guide like this is something completely out of the author's control. Editors change so fast in publishing that by the time the Guide comes out, countless entries are no longer accurate. As Sally says in her intro, "Even if you get this book each year, you need to keep up with any additions or changes that will affect the way you use it." In other words, verify everything before you submit--something a professional writer should do anyway. And while symbols are used at the beginning of each entry in the periodical section to indicate whether the market is new, unconfirmed, updated from a website, or a paying listing, I would love to see a symbol added indicating whether a publication accepts fiction (since so many do not).

The 2007 Christian Writer's Market Guide is a must-have resource for Christian writers. Even if an editor's name changes, most publishers and magazines are still around come release day, and reading about their needs and guidelines is an education from which all writers can benefit. Kudos to Sally Stuart for this excellent book.

4 out of 5 stars Good Resource for Western Christian Writers.......2007-05-08

This is a great resource for protestant/evangelical writers, but was quite lacking in Eastern Orthodox publications and advice for Orthodox writers. Other than that, it's certainly a valuable resource for helping getting your books, articles, etc. published.

5 out of 5 stars What every writer in the Christian market needs.......2007-04-27

f you are a struggling writer, who writes for the Christian market, or even if you've been published, but are looking for other publishing outlets for your work, Sally E. Stuarts Christian Writers' Market Guide 2007 is the book you need for your reference library.

The publishing industry is constantly changing. New publishing outlets come and go every year. The submission requirements for publishing houses change also. Sally E. Stuart's comprehensive book (with a CD-ROM) will help Christian writers search out sources with ease.

The 2007 edition provides a listing for over 1,200 markets for books, poetry, stories, articles and even greeting cards. It includes thirty-six new book publishers, eighty-six new periodicals and thirty-four changes in literary agencies. And it lists writers' conferences, groups, contests, pay rates, submission guidelines and a glossary of terms. It has it all.

Armchair Interviews says: A must have for every Christian writer. It might make the difference between finding a home for your work, or having it languish in a drawer.

5 out of 5 stars Great Tool for New Writers.......2007-03-27

This book was recommended to me by a friend. I am a new writer and I must say this book has been my greatest asset in finding possible publishing companies and local editors.

It provides an all-inclusive listing of Christian resources that can help anyone get started on the right track. Whether a novice or an expert this is a great tool to have in your library if you are an author!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Very Handy!.......2007-03-17

Although I'm not in high school and am a college student I still found this book to be very handy. I find that the pages in the book where you can write things down are very helpful so that while you are reading you can take notes and your notes will also be with the text.

2 out of 5 stars Unnecessary expense for student journalists.......2007-01-03

This notebook is not a very useful tool for student journalists, and it's way too expensive. The same effect would be to give all your students $.79 spiral-bound notebooks after teaching them the basics of journalistic writing.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent source for student writers........2006-04-30

Our school just started a school-wide newspaper this year. We joined NESPA and ordered The Reporter's Notebook for all 20 of our newspaper staff members. It has been an excellent tool for the students to use for ideas, editing, etc! As newspaper sponsor, I appreciated the usefulness of this book so much, I have ordered 20 copies for next year's staff as well.

5 out of 5 stars Fun tool for kids.......2006-04-26

We started a newspaper at our school, Resurrection St. Paul, in Ellicott City, MD this past year. Mark has been so helpful in giving us pointers to get the paper off the ground. The kids were so excited about having their own copy of "The Reporter's Notebook." It did make them feel like real journalists and gave them direction and ideas. I recommend it to members of any school newspaper.

4 out of 5 stars Students will love this notebook.......2006-04-21

The "Reporter's notebook" is a great tool to provide to students planning on writing and publishing a newspaper. The notebook provides several tips and ideas for young writers in a well organized format. There are also several pages for students to use for note taking.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Parenting Plus.......2006-11-12

I was disappointed in this book. I was looking for a book that would encourage average elementary students to improve their typing skills. Instead I encountered a pyrotechnic display of a very exceptional seven year old's imagination. I wish Adora luck in her fiction writing, but examples of letter writing or report writing would be more helpful to average students. Most of the third and fourth graders at my school do not have the vocabulary to follow Adora's flights of fantasy.

5 out of 5 stars "A child Shall Lead them".......2006-07-11

I am so impressed with the humility, joy and delight of Adora, and the devoted attention her mother gave her. It not only is a book about inspiring other children to put their thoughts into written word, but a grand tool for anyone teaching our youth....Then there is the inspiration of calling all mothers to teach, instruct and inspire their children. I am sharing this book with a couple of teachers. I am 71 years young. I will look forward to seeing where Adora goes in her future. Peggy Lippitt

5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2006-07-08

This book was great, the writting tips were helpful, and the stories were very good. I'd also like to add that the other review made by Leelikah is a bit rediculous. She wrote that Adora's writting was "childish and stupid" however Miss Leelikah must not know much about the author considering she was only SEVEN when she wrote the book! Now I understand you called yourself an aspiring author, and good for you but I'm sure you didn't have any book published when you turned 8! Adora is talented, she was reading chapter books by the time she was 3! Not many people can say that they were able to do that. So before writting a review for the book and calling the author childish and stupid it would probably help if you knew what you were talking about.

5 out of 5 stars Flying Fingers-A Teacher's Viewpoint.......2006-03-18

I have been consistently disappointed in my search for creative writing teaching tools for children. They tend to be condescending or banal, with few fresh ideas. Flying Fingers: Master the Tools of Learning Through the Joy of Writing proves to be an exception. A collection of lively stories by prodigy author Adora Svitak, Flying Fingers includes key vocabulary, creative writing exercises, exercises designed to improve basic writing skills, and an extensive guide for parents and educators. Adora's co-author, Joyce Svitak, has a refreshing stance on education, espousing a strong belief that most children are capable of much better writing-it's just a matter of tapping into their creativity and changing your own perceptions of their potential. For a teacher, this alone is an incredibly uplifting message; backed up by step-by-step directions and innovative exercises, it's a vital strategy.

5 out of 5 stars Flying Fingers-A Great Teaching Tool.......2006-03-18

My children have been much more interested in writing since they saw Adora's appearance on Good Morning America, and I was thrilled that her first book included both stories and writing tips. Pairing the two together gives children a tangible example of what they can achieve, accompanied by tools to help them on their path. Adora's stories are quite humorous and entertaining in and of themselves (even for adult readers), and, with the accompanying `strategies for parents and educators' and `fun exercises for kids' segments, they make great learning tools. Since my children began reading Lemony Snicket, I have been trying to find more stories that include definitions of key vocabulary. The Flying Fingers glossary surpasses anything I have found so far; with words like scurrilous and ribald, Adora's vocabulary selection is lively enough to keep young readers interested.

Hi guys!!! I'm Dani from Spain. What can i say? I think this is awesome. There are no words to explain what i'm learning with this book. I've been lost a lot of time searching for a book like this one and now i find it. Thanks to Berklee press. And please GIVE ME AN SCHOLARSHIP BERKLEEEEEE!!!! hahahaa. I really need it, i'm good composser. TRUST ME. LOL. I recommend this book to everybody who want's to learn how to write a song without a guitar, piano... All you need is your lyric, pen, and score. Thanks to amazong too, this website is amazing. Sorry about my english guys, i'm still learning. Best regards to all. CYA!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars exhaustive book on the subject.......2006-04-20

I am reading this book for the 5th time. You need to understand some basic music theory and sight reading before hitting this book. But if you are looking for a book to give you a revolution in creation, and blow you open to seemingly endless new possibilities with your songwriting, DO NOT miss this book. Get this book and "the craft of lyric writing by Sheila Davis." and then study some stuff on grooves like maybe "The songwriters workshop harmony" by jimmy kachulis. (then you have hit the three main parts of a song; rhythm, melody and lyrics.)

Realize that melody in songwriting is written by the chair of the songwriting department at berklee school of music in boston. If you didn't know, that is the most recognized contemporary music school in the world. (research it, if this is new knowledge to you) They don't put out fluff and obvious information. It is useful, critical and complete, and prepares you to navigate inspiration when it hits.

This book has changed how I write music in many many ways.

5 out of 5 stars It's About Composition, Plain and Simple.......2006-04-12

This terrific book examines what might be called a "theory of melody" as applied to songwriting, although many of the principles Perricone demonstrates come straight out of classical composition and could be applied to melody in many contexts
other than popular song.

The author wisely divides the work into two large areas he calls
"Melody: Its Components" and "Melody-Harmony Relationships". Separating the horizontal and vertical aspects of melody is an effective learning tool, though such a line would likely never be drawn in the intuitive act of composing.

The Components part of the book deals with the behavior of tones and the contruction of melody: the influence of rhythm on phrases, devices to develop and contrast motives
and the expansion of this basic material into larger sections is covered.

The second part of the book introduces the harmonic element, placing the melodic invention of the first part into its traditional context. Unless you're planning to write Gregorian chant or solo voice Appalachian ballads, your melodies interact
with, and are to a certain extent a function of, the underlying harmony. Tension tones, and the influence of target and bass tones are explored. Gradually the integration of harmony and melody unfolds and a set of tools are demonstrated for creating
both chord progressions and corresponding melody. Indeed, much of this material is as applicable to jazz improvisation and composition as it is to songwriting.

The author assumes you're familiar with musical notation and the harmony illustrations are keyboard-oriented, so if you're a guitarist you'll have to adapt the chord symbols to your own voicings.

The harmonic vocabulary covers a broad range of musical styles and should be familiar to rock/pop musicians as well as those interested in jazz/show tunes. There are a number of references to well-known songs, but in contrast to Jimmy Kochulis' books, Perricone relies somewhat less on examples and possibly
more on the individual's own initiative. He assumes you've got the listening background and experience and have confidence beyond the phase of literal imitation (a phase that's nothing to be ashamed of and has been the starting point for most composers throughout history).

There's a tremendous amount of useful material here for those willing to work at it. This is not a "write a hit song in 21 days"-type of book. It's a serious composition text that will reward serious study.

5 out of 5 stars A very informative and comprehensive tool..........2005-11-09

I bought this book from amazon. where this book is used in the songwriting couses. I produce electronic music, trip hop, chillout and the like, so I thought that this book might help me understand the inner workings of melody in a song. This book is very comprehensive and contains a lot of concepts and composition techniques which I suppose would help in improvising as well. It gives you material to work on by the given exercises which definitely stimulate your thinking mind. This is a large book but not very thick(its a good thing) and the printing format is very attractive. After covering some of the essential lessons I could definitely feel that I was listening to songs and composing in a very technical way. This book changes the way you think and hear music at its very least.
With a bit of inspiration you could write a very sophisticated piece of music.I feel that all this theory will make a better musician if this book is taken seriously enough and worked through. A must for any songwriter or theory student.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2005-10-22

I purchased this book about a year ago. The exercises in the book helped me look at melody in a whole new way. It made me realize that I really didn't know how to creat a decent melody. It not only helped with composing songs, but in improvising as well.

5 out of 5 stars Indispensable.......2007-03-05

The Tool Kit is the one "must have" reference work for anyone looking to sell their first work of fiction. There is something in here for everyone. When I was casting around for an agent, I looked into the section titled "Classification of Agents" and quickly discovered that the people I was talking to at the time emitted all of the noises of the "D-F' category of agent. That information alone was priceless.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource To Begin Marketing a Novel.......2006-07-11

It's very hard to complete a novel, and after you complete it and begin to think about how to get it published can become overwhelming. That one page query letter that agents and publishers read and judge your writing ability on is an education in itself. This book will help you craft that all-important letter.

5 out of 5 stars Covers it all.......2005-09-20

This book answers virtually all questions about how to get there from here. The author offers the guiding principles and then examples for every step except actually writing the novel. She details the processes from creating the query and synopsis to the various alternatives for marketing the novel. It's a well designed view that shows the steps. What she doesn't do is minimize the fact that it's all work and to be taken seriously. Really want to sell that novel? Read this book.

5 out of 5 stars This book is an author's roadmap to success ...........2003-07-11

Elizabeth Lyon's new book, Sell Your Novel Toolkit, provides a detailed roadmap for producing a well qualified query letter, synopsis and tips to manage that all important marketing strategy.

Ms. Lyon's Toolkit is written from the perspective of an accomplished, well-seasoned author who has experienced it all and learned from her own writing successes. Ms. Lyon's product is not only functional, but encouraging to the author who is already established, or entering the publishing environment for the first time.

The Toolkit has enhanced my abilities as a newly published author and I look forward to the next book.

5 out of 5 stars The Sell Your Novel Toolkit.......2003-06-30

Obviously an accomplished writer herself, Ms. Lyon seems to have a sixth sense about the quandaries we novelists ponder each night when we could be sleeping. Should I write a prologue? How do I keep track of crisscrossing submissions? Should I give up after the tenth rejection letter? Tool Kiit offers the steadying voice of an accomplished independent editor who has made it her life's work to delve into every detail of publishing, and she has come up with a workable plan of attack.

5 out of 5 stars Has everything..........2007-05-09

Has everything you need to get started. The person who inspired me to get this was highly credentialed in calligraphic art and she was satisfied and approving when I explained to her the contents. The guides are visually explicit and make you want to get started right away. Highly recommended by me.

5 out of 5 stars This is a Manuscript Manufacture.......2007-03-15

i have recently found out about Manuscript Products for calligraphy. They are far more superior then anything you can find in the States. they are made in england and the nibs are of the highest quality while being priced very economically. I was very happy to see they were the manufacture behind readers digest, so i knew before even looking at the book i had a superior product.

And it is superior, anyone who likes calligraphy will love this. it is NOT a truly basic, but anyone who is not familiar will have no problems working on the kit. It is a whole calligraphy set. not just making Prettily letters with a flat nib.

5 out of 5 stars Complete Calligraphy Set.......2007-01-10

This is a great all-inclusive product. I gave it to my daughter-in-law for Christmas and she was really thrilled. The set came with everything she needed to learn techniques and actually use to create her own beautiful work. The packaging was well-organized and kept all parts easy to see and use as well as great for storage of all its parts. I am delighted with the price, too, especially with so much included in the set. Great buy and successful gift!

4 out of 5 stars Best Way to get Started!.......2006-11-29

This is an excellent buy for your first step into the word of calligraphy. It includes everything you will need to get started. The tools included are of decent quality. My only gripe is that there is not much ink included. But again, the intention of this kit is to get your STARTED and it does that very well.

A tip for anyone having difficulty loading ink. This is a DIP PEN. You must dip it in the ink to load the pen. If the ink will not hold, tried putting a flame on the tip of the pen for 2-3 seconds on both sides and then dip it in cool water. This will remove some of the varnish and/or machining oils allowing the ink to stick and flow better.

5 out of 5 stars Complete Set for a Beginner.......2006-01-13

I am not a total novice to calligraphy, but it has been many years since I practiced this art. The book contains all of the essential information a beginner needs to know, and some of the basic tools: pen holders, nibs, a brush, pencil and various colored inks. There is a spiral bound Technique Book, and a spiral bound Project Book. I may have missed this in the directions, but most calligraphers I've met find a tiny cosmetics jar with a tight fitting lid. After this has been washed very well cut out a piece of soft foam and place it in the jar, add the ink you'll be using and dip your pen in this jar for getting just the right amount of ink on y,ou pen. You practically eliminate the possibility of getting ink over your project or table. HTH!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Nothing like it.......2006-10-22

This is simply the most comprehensive complilation of data for the Christian writer endorsed by author's, publishers and agents.

5 out of 5 stars Sally's book.......2006-07-16

I attended a Christian Writer's Conference two years ago, a dizzying initiation into the subculture that produces much of the written material that American (at least) Christians read.

There I heard reverential references to Sally Stuart's annual publication and dutifully picked up my copy at the bookstand.

It truly is a marvelous reference work, published annually in order to track the rapid changes in the industry. Major sections include resources for writers (you never knew there were so many), topical/subject and alphabetical listings of book publishers, similar listings for periodicals and specialty markets, and a section on helps for writers. The latter includes an extensive list of literary agents who will pitch (after perhaps rejecting or reshaping) your work to the right publisher.

Sally's book is what it is: an indispensible gathering in one place of the data you need to get published in this sector. If this is your desire, you'll want to make sure you pick up your copy annually.

5 out of 5 stars Christian Writer's Market Guide 2006.......2006-07-04

I needed this book for the locations of publishers and agents, it is a great tool.

5 out of 5 stars Everything there is to know about the business.......2006-04-19

The first time writer faces a whole series of problems in even getting some to take them seriously. Can you imagine what it must have been like to go to a publisher and tell them that you were writing this seven volume series about a boy going to Wizzard's school.

The key is to find a publisher that likes what you do. And that is basically a numbers game -- contact enough people and you will find one that likes what you write. This book is basically a list of people to contact. It covers not only the publishers (book and periodical) but also such things as writing groups, promotional contacts (book reviewers, publicists, writers conferences, agents) -- in short everything there is to know about the writing business with an emphasis on the Christian marketplace.

This book comes out every year, so you get up to date names, e-mail and physical addresses and of course the new publications that may not have a stable of writers.

5 out of 5 stars A Crucial Reference Book for Every Christian Writer.......2006-04-12

Whether you dream of writing magazine articles or books for the Christian marketplace, you need this book on your shelf.

The key is beyond having it in your possession. Study the book and use the many tools built into the pages from marketing guru Sally E. Stuart. Every writer can benefit from her many years of expertise tracking the Christian marketplace.

Every aspect of publishing is constantly changing, Sally gives you the latest scoop in this solid reference book. Don't be caught using out-of-date information. How are you caught? When you submit to an editor who is long gone from a publishing house or a magazine. The annual edition of this book will serve you well.

4 out of 5 stars perfect for teachers.......2003-12-01

Teaching an introduction to literature course can be a demanding job. One concern is that you have to find the book/s that provide/s you with the works you want and, at the same time, you want to try to not break the economic backs of your students. LITERATURE AND THE WRITING PROCESS is probably one of the better collections out there. For my purposes, it has most of what I need: dramas like OEDIPUS REX and MACBETH; short stories by Joyce, Carver, O'Connor, Achebe, Munroe, and Updike; and a vast array of poetry that spans centuries.

While the price of this collection seems steep, it works out to be much cheaper than having your students buy a copy of MACBETH, of OEDIPUS REX, of DUBLINERS, of CATHEDRAL, etc. Another advantage of this book is that it provides students with guides on how to approach literature, and how to write about it. Not all of these guides are helpful, and some are extremely weak: this is why I give this book four stars instead of five. Still, I haven't found much else out there that compares to this book for the price!
