Customer Reviews:
F & P Leveled Book List.......2007-06-28
This is a great resource book for the classroom teacher all the way up to the school administrator. It provides numerous titles to select quality reading materials for the diverse classroom.
How about online access for teachers to ID book levels?.......2007-03-20
It has been almost a decade since Fountas and Pinnell came out with their list of leveled books -- and I take my hat off to them. It is a wonderful resource for teachers who are interested in matching kids to books and keeping kids mainly in books that are "just right" for them. The list, I believe, has grown through the contributions of many teachers nationwide, and perhaps even world-wide. Isn't it about time that a new teacher with no money in his/her pockets should be able to access this list online at no cost? Many children would be helped. A lot of money has been made on the Fountas and Pinnell books -- maybe it's time to give rank and file teachers a Christmas present or just a "We're With Ya" present in the form of a complete online database so they can quickly ascertain a book's level. If this has been done, I'd be interested in locating it. So far, my searches have not turned up the Fountas and Pinnell list online.
If you are new to leveling books..........2006-04-13
This book is a great resource if you are new to leveling books. It has helped me a great deal because I don't have any of their other titles, so it is not a repeat of information. This book also has the levels of many newly published books. If you want more leveled books, though, I found a great website with tons of them for sale: www.whoossmart.com .
steep price, content lacking at times.......2006-04-03
This book possesses the unfortunate combination of a high price and too many missing book titles. Not a good value for the money, in my opinion.
FYI.......2006-03-24
The title should have been the first clue. This reference contains thousands of books that are already leveled by the companies who sell them in bundles of six. I was hoping that this resource would have more trade books written by authors whose intent is to engage and entertain children. As the levels increase, the number of trade books does too, but the majority of books are already leveled.

Not for Homeschoolers.......2006-06-27
I bought this book for my homeschooled 8-year-old, and was disappointed to discover that almost the entire book talked about how to handle school. GT classes, working with teachers to negotiate more suitable learning opportunities, how to survive on the playground and in regular classrooms -- all these topics were addressed, but none were relevant to my homeschooled son, who still has questions about how and why he thinks and perceives the world differently than other children.
Not for twice-exceptional kids.......2006-05-23
This book was fun, quick read as an adult, since I could see myself in it. However, it is oriented to gifted kids without learning disabilities. I won't even bother to show this book to my twice-exceptional son. I think he would be alienated by the (sometimes smug) tone in a text that doesn't admit that learning disabilities exist. [perhaps this has been corrected in a later edition]
Good for gifted adults, too........2006-02-08
***This review is of the 1984 edition. ISBN 0-915793-00-8. Apparently, the book has been updated and republished many times.***
I've been doing some reading on giftedness lately, since I realized there are materials out there now that didn't exist when I was growing up. I am completely delighted with this book. It directly addresses both childhood experiences and issues gifted people continue to face as adults because, frankly, they're the same issues.
The list of reasons gifted kids get bored and frustrated in school reads like a litany of the reasons most adults are frustrated with work.
It's sad that we push gifted children to do everything they can to change and improve (and in a lot of cases, we step in to change it for them) the status quo in school settings, so they will not be stifled, repressed or dumbed down from a lack of freedom to Live Up To Their Full Potential, yet we expect intelligent, educated adults (not to mention gifted ones) to malinger all day long in cublicles / behind cash registers / in pointless meetings / etc., doing repetitive tasks ad nauseum, stripped of the autonomy to fully use their gifts or to make contextual decisions about how they would like to do so.
Adults, for some reason, are expected to accept that there will be retribution for having higher ethical and moral standards than the rest of their coworkers or for consistently contributing to people 'above them' in hierarchical chains ideas of better, more efficient ways to work. They're expected, if not forced, to hide their smarts and other gifts to stay employed.
That's got to change. Doesn't make much sense to raise and educate humans one way and then expect them to be entirely different as adults just for the sake of 'earning money', does it? This book is a very simple and direct reminder of that, and an affirmation of the common sense explanations of why it is so.
It's also interesting to note that the teasing experienced in school is no different from what goes on in the workplace or adult life in general. This book is like a smart, sane, honest peer encouraging you to stick up for your rights - and, yes, people of all ages do have a right to be different and to work and live at their own level instead of following the least common denominator. 'Corporate culture' be damned.
Gifted people exist to lead humanity forward, not to be bullied into conforming to the stupidities of the day. What would this country and this world be like if people were allowed to live up to their full potential *on a daily basis*?
The book is also a boost to the spirits with cute illustrations and room for adding to the text, coloring, drawing, whatever.
I checked this one out of the public library. I'd have loved to buy multiple copies, for myself and others. I think the gifted people I know - of all ages - would enjoy and find unexpected value in receiving this book as a gift. However, this is not the current edition available in print and I have not read the newest one. I'm not sure how they could have improved it but I look forward to perusing the current edition in a store sometime before purchasing.
my son couldn't put this book down.......2006-01-31
When I ordered this book, my son took it with him where every we went. He read it and wrote in it for two days until he was finished. I'm glad I purchased this book, because I didn't know as much as I thought before I read it.
Read it to my gifted students.......2005-08-17
I read and discussed this book with my gifted 3rd grade students. It is very informative but some of it was a bit over their heads. I really think that this book is better suited for 11-12 year olds. However, it did help me explain some of the issues which they face as well as terms related to being gifted which they had heard but never really understood.

Enthusiastically recommended for parents, teachers, and caregivers of young children everywhere........2007-04-14
Kindergarten teacher Jill Frankel Hauser presents Science Play, a compendium of over 65 safe, age-appropriate activities designed to foster creativity and a sense of discovery in children ages 2 to 6. Step-by-step instructions and simple black-and-white illustrations walk readers through activities such as observing earthworms at work, making puddle prints with food coloring, water, and a simple medicine dropper, or gathering and sorting rocks. Young children will most likely need an adult's help with reading the instructions, but the activities themselves are easy to do and highly inexpensive. Enthusiastically recommended for parents, teachers, and caregivers of young children everywhere.
A fun way to introduce science to little kids!.......2006-02-13
It's absolutely perfect for our 3- and 5-year olds! It's a great way to introduce science concepts to them. The experiments are simple to prepare, very interesting and lots of fun. Also, most of the materials are common items used at home. We have done a number of the experiments without spending much money at all. It comes very handy, too, during rainy or snowy days. The activities help keep the kids from getting bored inside the house.
Outstanding resource.......2004-02-08
My kids loved these fun learning activities. Enough to keep them busy through early childhood. Nothing canned here. . . all creative and discovery-focused. Makes biology and even physics accessable to very young children. You can't go wrong with this outstanding guide.
This series is GREAT.......2003-07-31
This is really handy for the budding scientist in your preschooler. Experiements are written so that the early reader can understand and do the experiments on their own (it lets the reader know when a parent needs to help or supervise, such as when scissors are involved) and has question that the parent can use to further expand on projects. Also check this whole series, such as math play, arts and crafts from around the world, rainy day play, weather, shapes, etc. My son loves these activies. Plus for the price, you can't beat it. (...)
Dissatisfied in Annandale.......2003-01-12
This book had some neat ideas and experiments, but not enough explanations for them. I have a very inquisitive 4 year old and this book just didn't satisfy his curiosity or my expectations.

What better way to make vocabulary words stick than through funny and engaging cartoons? Just one cartoon a day, complete with clear, simple definitions and sentences, will help build students' vocabulary and boost their reading, writing, and test-taking skills.

No index or table of contents.......2007-06-17
The cartoons and definitions are great. I also like that each cartoon only takes up half a page. However, the words are harder than I thought they'd be. Also, the words are not in alphabetical order and... brace yourself - there is no index or table of contents!!! You can't quickly find a word you're trying to teach.

A Bible of Children's Literature.......2006-02-26
I am finishing up my master's program soon. In doing research on Charlotte Huck, I found this book. It has so much "no nonsense" information in it! Everything Huck has said since the first edition of this book has been right on the money. I am a literacy coach for K-5, and I think that this book is by far the best resource I have. It tells which books to use for certain grade levels, genres, subject areas... AND it tells a little bit about the books that the authors chose. It is chock full of the history of reading, understanding why literature is the way it is, and resources for all areas. I recommend this book for anyone who teaches reading to children, or has a love of reading to his/her own children!
Children's Literature book personal review.......2000-03-22
I was required to purchase this book for a college course. I am very thankful that my instructer choose this book. It is full of wonderful examples of appropriate literature for children. I sat down one evening and read two chapters for the sheer joy of it. The only thing that I was unhappy with was that there was a lack of children's activities in regards to the poetry section. All and all, this is a exceptional book for anyone interested in children's literature.

A must for young authors!.......2007-03-03
This is the best book I've found on writing tips, ideas, and other helpful stuff. The colorful pictures, clear writing, and friendly attitude make the book fun to read and use instead of boring, confusing, and difficult to read and use, like most of the books on writing I've read. This book has helped me make my own writing a ton better! I'd give this book 6 stars if I could. If you need help on any writing of any kind, you need to buy this book!
It helps alot!.......2007-02-08
I love this book so much and I'll tell you why. It gives you so many helpful ideas and hints. It's filled with tests on what you've read and writing activites. I happy I bought this book actually when I was in NY at the american girl building. ( check it out in NY.) and im sure you'll be happy too.

In April I sent my daughter to a day-long activity at a local college, where Kerry Madden led a writing workshop for girls. I imagine many of the exercises came from WRITING SMARTS. My daughter enjoyed Ms. Madden's class and now can't put her pen or pencil down. She's always writing something for me to read or look at. We now own the book. I think my daughter is on her way to becoming a writer because of Ms. Madden's book and the workshop. This book is a must have if you have a daughter and want to boost her creativity and voice.

Book Description
Intelligent, respectful, and beautifully written, this book bypasses lesson plans and gimmicks and gets to the heart of what writing poetry is all about . . .
- The Writing Teacher
For the Good of the Earth and Sun is for teachers at all levels, especially for those teachers who feel anxious about introducing poetry to students.
Georgia Heard offers a method of teaching poetry that respects the intelligence of students and teachers and that can build upon their basic originality. She explores poetry from the inside as it is: a powerful and necessary way of looking at the world, and one of mankind's most durable inventions.
Her book provides detailed, organized information so that teachers themselves can begin to enjoy and feel knowledgeable about poetry, and, from there, pass those feelings on to their students. The author's text is supplemented by examples of students' work in original and draft form.

For the Good of the Earth and Sun is Good for All!.......1999-10-10
I am a senior studying elementary education at the University of Florida. I practically used this wonderful book as my bible for methods and strategies of how to teach poetry to young and/or reluctant students.
This book is a clear and concise journey of how to "prepare the soil" and get children writing poetry! The book includes extensive examples of student writing and is highly recommended to anyone teaching (or who is planning to teach) a language arts curriculum, students, and even parents who want to encourage the writing of their children.

Too Many Faults.......2007-03-25
The one star that I award this book comes from its definitions of what good response and literature is. It also has a nice chapter with a list of the award winning books every year since the awards were created. The reason the other four are lacking is because the book falls short in some areas.
I feel this book could use a bit more depth. While it explains what each type of book is quite well, it doesn't go into enough depth about how to actually teach the books. I understand that this book is used in a children's literature class, but I feel it would be good preparation for higher level teaching classes to have a few more examples about each type of literature and how it can be integrated into a solid curriculum.
The books referenced in here are current, but it's forgetting a few things that are important--namely the inclusion of older literature. There was a lot of good children's literature published before 2000 and the book often fails to recognize that. Staples like the Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew are only mentioned in passing, and even authors enjoyed by generations such as Roald Dahl don't get as much time as they should. Patricia Reilly Giff's excellent "Polk Street School" books don't even get mentioned. However, the book seems to references a few of the same titles in every single chapter, which can get a bit annoying.
The chapter on realistic fiction seems rather weak. It is introduced poorly, with realisitic fiction only sounding like "major league" problems from the description of it. Stories about, say, trouble in school don't even get a mention until a few pages later, and the sections are vague on these staples of American literature (who doesn't read books about kids who have school problems?) as well as in other sections. Hancock only seems to write about what she likes and what she looks for without looking any further at the wide array of children's literature out there.
While response is a very important thing in any literature class, I also feel there isn't any love for good old fashioned comprehension in this book. Those questions will appear on standardized tests and I feel they should be emphasized as well.
There are a few things in here I disagree with, mostly relating to classroom policy and the development of students, but that is probably common for people who are used to a certain school system and paid attention to every nook and cranny of it when they went through it. The ideas may be good, but I feel there can be more than one answer to some of these situations.
Finally, I don't care for some of the author's word choice in here. This may just be personal preference, but I feel it can be a bit verbose at times and that she overuses some of her words.
Okay but lacking real depth.......2000-10-29
I chose this book for a children's literature class that I lead based mostly on cost. The other recommended texts in this area are very expensive and I wanted my students to be able to purchase quality trade books as well. I need to supplement the reading a great deal because of the cursory nature of the chapters regarding various genres. For the money, it's a fine text but be aware that it leaves out a great deal that that other books - such as Norton's Through the Eyes of a Child from the same publisher - cover in greater depth.
Hands-On Children's Literature.......2000-03-29
Marjorie Hancock introduces teachers to some of the best titles in Children's Literature. Going beyond mere introductions, she suggests methods for implementing various response methods and for integrating Children's Literature into the classroom. She has taken the effort to include titles for both elementary and middle school classrooms in one volume, so that teachers are able to become acquainted with a wide variety of genres as well as titles. An especially impressive section is her chapter on poetry, where she not only defines the various forms, but provides examples of each style. This is a concise volume, and it does lack the pictures that many other texts have. The references to children's literature websites, and authors' homepages are a valuable resource tool and help integrate modern technology with the printed page -- a skill that is sorely needed as we enter the new millenium.
