Book Description
This is a resource book for teachers containing material for a wide variety of games which can be played in the English language classroom. Each game focuses on one or more points of English grammar. A specification is given for each game, describing its level, materials needed, grammar points practised and time required. Grammar Games enables teachers to integrate grammar practice into their classes in novel and motivating ways.

Endlessly useful.......2007-06-12
"Grammar Games" is a must for transforming deadly dull grammar lessons into creative and fun activities. Each activity lists the grammar structure involved, level, preparation, materials and timing. A big bonus is that the Table of Contents lists the grammar point as well as the name of the activity--far too many other resources only give you the name of the activity, which makes it impossible to find anything easily. A great resource!
Creative and a good foundation.......2001-11-14
Provides various activities that teach many aspects of English as well as grammar points using communicative methodology. These activities are creative and helpful. What is so useful is that these activities can be modified/altered to suit your class level. Some of the expressions and topics are a little strange and not really suitable to use in class for young learners who are at beginning level. But of course you can alter them. I have been able to make up many of my own lesson ideas from this book, written by ESL teaching veterans. "Grammar Games" is very helpful. I also recommend "More Grammar Games" which is a part-two, or addition to this book.
And now for something completely different..........2001-06-19
Grammar Games contains fifty-six language learning activities divided into five sections; competitive games, collaborative sentence-making games, awareness activities, grammar through drama, and miscellany. About one fifth of the games deal directly with grammatical accuracy by exposing students to correct or incorrect sentences, with a caveat from the author urging us to accept that students who are highly focused will not imprint the wrong sentences that the theories of Skinner or Krashen may suggest. I can't say for sure whether incorrect grammar will be unconsciously learned or not, but it is clear that not everyone will be interested in these kind of activities anyway. I was therefore pleased that the rest of the book covered material that would appeal to many different types of learner, not just the analytically inclined. Grammar Games has a distinctly British, slightly seventies, and somewhat eccentric feel to it. We can learn by being physically active, or by being silent and reflective. There are board games and gambling games. You can vote for the best, play snap, take part in an auction, or do back-writing. You can even brainstorm why two people would want to exchange socks on a train - not everyone's cup of tea, perhaps. I enjoyed reading Grammar Games because most of the activities looked interesting and highly original, and that there were many that I would like to try out with my students, someday. For the EFL teacher searching for new ideas on how to teach grammar while having fun, whether you are experienced or novice, I recommend that you take a look at Mario Rinvolucri's Grammar Games.
Wow- implicit grammar instruction that's cool!.......2001-05-16
This book was recommended to me by a professsor who had used it with her Middle School ESL kids. After having it a week, I have to say it is fabulous. I had been looking for ways to teach grammar to my junior high kids, without tedious explanations of grammatical rules, worksheets or diagramming. The day after I received it, I was able to start the kids on a game where they could internalize grammatical rules, and demonstrate what they already understood about the deep structure of English. The only preparation required was writing a sentence on the board, and they were involved for twenty minutes. The only reservation I have in recommending this book is that it is British, and intended for adult learners. I have had to adapt some of the language to make it easier for my kids to understand.

Book Description
The Power of Guidance: Teaching Social-Emotional Skills In the Early Childhood Classroom gives readers valuable insight into using guidance in the early childhood setting through a collection of popular writings on this timely topic. Taking into consideration the social and emotional development in young children, the book examines such areas as understanding why children behave the way they do and how to use the guidance approach to succeed in teaching acceptable social behaviors. The material discusses the differences between such important concepts as patience and understanding and between misbehavior and mistaken behavior. These concepts provide insight into the importance of developing an encouraging classroom and how that leads to non-punitive strategies for managing the classroom setting. The popular guidance concept of this book attracted the attention of the NAEYC, which has made it a comprehensive member benefit for 2003.
Customer Reviews:
GREAT book!!.......2007-05-07
This book should be a must for every early childhood teacher or child care provider. It has many practical solutions to everyday problems we all encounter.
Oh my Goodness.......2007-03-03
If you having any bearing on a child's social and emotional wellbeing, Itell you that this will end up being a staple in your library. You will also find yourself referring others to specific chapters in the book. I am now on my third copy of this book, as I keep lending it to others, and they won't give it back!
This first chapter dives into sharing how when we understand developmental milestones in children, then the idea of "patience" most seem to think those who work with young children need, is thrown out the window! Dan explains, how truly understanding the child's development is the touchstone to nurturing all aspects of a child's development.Patience is not a requirement when it comes to working with young children.
Also, the chapter on crisis management(I think chapter 10) is fundamental to an early childhood educators approach to working with challengind behaviors. The chapter on the male role and early childhood is excellent.
Buy this book! You will not be dissapointed!

Book Description
Marie Clay, in her foreword, says that this important book will help raise the profile for what is needed to get all children off to a good start in education. And a good place to start is with Carol Lyons.
Lyons does a masterful job of introducing teachers to the concepts, categories, language, and arguments pertaining to the brain's control of what readers do. She offers a new way of thinking about learning, about how the mind develops, and about what teachers can do to reach struggling readers. She draws on examples from interactions with her son and her own teaching, from research, and from the work of ten expert teachers, who have successfully taught those children often considered the hardest to teachchildren with learning disabilities, language delays, or attention deficit (hyperactivity) disorder. In addition, she supplies numerous transcripts of teacher-student conversations and end-of-chapter tips to guide teachers to observe their students and plan instruction more effectively.
Lyons' lifework has been the cognitive development of children. For decades, she has worked side by side with them, observing and researching what exactly goes on as they read and write. Now she has given us a book that is both accessible and fascinating, that explores topics too often overlooked or avoided. She offers a breakthrough explanation of the role emotion and the brain play in learning to read. Most important, she provides specific advice, with examples, to illustrate how to enable students to read and write, whatever their needs or abilities.

Rip-off.......2007-03-11
I received the book in time. So far so good. When I opened the book, I found that the binding was broken and pages were falling out. I emailed the seller about the issue. She said return it for credit. I said "OK, but I want my return postage included in my refund." No answer! After three emails finally got response. No response. I decided to return it anyway since it was doing me no good here. Today is March 10, 2007. Still no credit to my account, no response to my emails. You tell me what my ratings for this transaction should be.

Very helpful resource.......2005-09-30
As a clinical child psychologist, I have found this book helpful in both clinical practice and in my role as a college professor. I even used this book as one of the required texts to complete a project in a graduate level course I taught. Several students in that class mentioned that they wished to share this book with their school administrators for use with other projects. I strongly recommend this book for those interested in learning about this topic, as well as those looking to understand grant writing for such initiatives.

Book Description
Foreword by Parker Palmer
* How can educators and parents of diverse backgrounds come together to find ways to invite soul into schools?
* How do educators address "soul" in education without violating the separation of church and state or the deeply held beliefs of families and students?
In this book, Rachael Kessler shows how.
Based on the deeply moving stories and profound questions of students themselves, each chapter responds to the yearnings young people express: Deep Connection, Meaning and Purpose, Silence, Joy, Creativity, Transcendence, and Initiation--each evokes a gateway to inviting soul into the classroom.
Without healthy forums led by responsible adults, young people seek these gateways on their own, sometimes in destructive ways like drugs, sex, suicide, hazing, and even murder. Helping students find constructive ways to express their longings increases their motivation to learn; stay in school; strengthen ties to family and friends; and approach adult life with vitality, character, and vision.
This practical and inspirational sourcebook will support school communities that are committed to preventing violence and alienation and producing responsible, caring citizens.
Rachel Kessler, the director of The Institute for Social and Emotional Learning and a coauthor of the ASCD book Promoting Social and Emotional Learning: A Guide for Educators, is a consultant for curriculum and professional development living in Boulder, Colorado.
Customer Reviews:
A Must-have on the Bookshelf.......2000-06-10
This book triggered angry feelings for me. I wished I had a teacher like Rachael Kessler when I was growing up. Indeed, so few young people do. I caught myself recollecting my teen years, when I asked the very same questions the youth explore in the "Council"-an integral part of the Passages program described in the book. The youth in my generation had no Council for raising these questions; no safe place to tell stories, reveal the mystical, ponder meaning, or explore differences. Yet, as I later learned in my undergraduate studies in philosophy, it is the exploration of precisely these questions that provides the insight, sensitivity, empathy, and wisdom that open the inner self to the path of a civil society and a meaningful life. This is the forerunner of virtue. A few examples from Rachael's book will illustrate the type of universal questions I mean:
Why do I feel scared and confused about becoming an adult? What does it mean to accept that this is my life and I have responsibility for it?
How do I know I am normal? What is normal?
Why do people hate others-blacks, whites, Hispanics, etc.?
What is our purpose in life?
Why do people tire of life?
How does one determine one's sexuality? Are there symptoms? Is it a decision or a natural "given"-are you stuck with it or is there a choice?
Why are people so cold in taking care of the planet?
How come people kill other people?
Where do we go when we die?
This is but a sample of a myriad of questions that young people explore in the Council in the search of the inner self and the connection to the outer world.
Spirituality is a basic ingredient to our humanity with multiple domains and forms of expression, of which formal religion is but one. This book lays out an excellent discussion regarding the education of the soul: why it is needed in public schools and exactly how to teach it without violating the First Amendment or stomping on the toes of organized religious groups. In fact, any thoughtful review of this book will reveal that the type of spiritual development Rachael is proposing is "simpatico" with most organized religions. Further, and this is a critical point, she emphasizes the emptiness and frustration in individuals that results from spiritual paucity, and how this fact may lead to severe consequences for youth and community. In this discussion the author makes a connection between youth devoid of positive spirituality and acts of violence.
It makes sense that Rachael Kessler writes and teaches about the need for spiritual education in our schools. Born to parents who learned the year of her birth that most of their families had been sacrificed to the Holocaust, the author writes,
I was carried in the womb of that grief, I grew up in a family where suffering was imbued with nobility. . . it was noble both to suffer and mitigate the suffering of others.
By her late teens Rachael had found a purpose to embrace: to reduce the suffering in this world to the extent she could. She has been working to achieve this mission ever since.
This is a must-have on the bookshelf: a good "how-to" reference, backed up by solid philosophical underpinnings and appropriate methods.
Encouragement for Common Sense.......2000-05-20
In my book,PRIMAL AWARENESS, I show how and why the great values were a part of indigenous learning and in WALKING THE TALK we will hopefully make this a reality again for all learners. Rachel's book courageously has set the stage for everyone to implement character education by reminding us that without a spiritual approach to learning, values have no relationship to reality.

As a new ESL Teacher...This book is FANTASTIC.......2003-09-23
I often get stumped on new ideas for "game day" and this book has helped a great deal in regards to making game day different while learning important grammar in the process. I will never leave home without this book!
It has all different levels of games that you can change to meet the needs of your age group.
It is very easy to do all activities even if you are in a place without any resources. So now, instead of wondering what to do, I am now looking forward to game day along with my students.
I definately recommend this book for new ESL teachers who aren't creative enough (like me!) to come up with new ideas each week.
Happy Teaching!

Customer Reviews:
Excellent book!!!.......2003-02-25
This was one of the best, if not the best, books I have read that deals with emotional intelligence and how to incorporate this into a classroom setting. It is a great book for teachers who wish to learn more about their students and their teaching methods. I will use this book in all my classes.
Not a bad start..........2002-08-30
...but not quite thorough enough. Doty develops activities in 5 areas: (1) awareness of self and others, (2) approval of self and others, (3) responsibility, (4) personal meanings, and (5) honesty and ethics. She also has brief sections on creating thematic units (an infusion strategy for SEL or EI), and evaluation rubrics for these 5 areas. As such, this is an OK introduction for teachers who need some basic introduction and suggestion for activities. She develops positive discipline with natural consequences, but her work is more teacher-centered than other natural consequences advocates such as Northeast Foundation for Children (e.g., Ruth Charney).
I found her book better integrated than Dianne Schilling's three SEL/EI activities books.
Four other points: While these are passably good activities, many of them are "teacher suggested" rather than coming from some idea or problem that students voice. While she does use circle discussions, many of the activities are "teacher led" and can be typical didactic lessons. While some of the activities are on target, some are self-esteem bromides. Finally, while some activities are developmentally appropriate, they are not linked to developmental milestones, so they are "generic" K-8 activities.
This book will be useful to teachers who would like suggestions about where to begin.
Should be on every teacher's shelf!.......2002-03-22
This is the best book I have read on emotional intelligence, and should be mandatory reading for anyone who works with children. It's interesting, well-written, and easy to follow. If you buy 3 books this year, this one should be one of them! I am going to make it mandatory reading for my students.

Great book on social emotional learning..........2002-08-19
This is a companion to Cohen's other edited book, Caring Classrooms/Intelligent Schools. This book addresses an older group of youngsters in school--those passing into adolescence. The 12 chapters cover the theory of social emotional learning (SEL) in schools. A number of SEL curricula or projects are discussed, such as the Comer/New Haven project, the work from the Northeast Foundation for Children, a psychoanalytically informed educational perspective, the Resolving Conflict Creatively Program (RCCP), and others.
This is not really a "how-to" book, any more than was Cohen's other book. Readers will benefit, however, because he systematically reviews SEL programs, and readers will be eager to pursue specific programs from among those referenced.
I missed not seeing any work from Myrna B. Shure, who is a good cognitive-behavioral SEL practitioner (the "I Can Problem Solve" curriculum). Does her work not involve young adolescents? If not, that is a disappointment.
SEL is important because we all 'swim' in a social environment. When that environment is caring and concerned, when students can make heart-informed choices, they 'swim' better and are said to learn better. We certainly know they are happier and appear more productive.
I know many readers will gain a lot from this work, and the other related books in the SEL field. Good luck!
Excellent, important book for educators interested in SEL........1999-04-08
This timely volume presents the range of ways that teachers can help students develop social-emotional skills and competencies. It is very practical and helpful. On one level, teachers have always done this. On another, new information, stratagies and research findings are presented here. Very helpful to "front line teachers" and I suspect, administrators too. It will also be of interest to parents who want to help thier kids feel better about themselves and more able!
