Book Description
This book is an entertaining and practical guide for every trainer and performance improvement professional as it tackles the three universal and persistent questions of the profession--how do learners learn, why do learners learn, and how do you ensure that learning sticks. This interactive book with it fun and breezy style illustrate the authors' point of view that learning should be active and enjoyable. Playful illustrations demonstrate the solid research that back up the authors' contentions and help readers separate learning myth from fact to dispel beliefs and practices that often harm the instructional process.
Customer Reviews:
Best purchase for training EVER............2007-04-05
There are so many "how to train" products out there and most are so academic so as not to be practical. This book is easily understandable, fun and most of all, practical. I have already incorporated most of what I've read and have seen dramatic improvement in our new employees' performance. Reading this book was as comfortable as talking with a friend over coffee, very informal and very fun! Thank you!
Must Have!.......2007-01-23
This book is a perfect blend of theory and practical application in a compact package. Small enough to slide in a purse or briefcase, so you can take it with you when you need to brush up. Love it!!!
Telling Ain't Training - great tool for trainers.......2007-01-18
This book is a great tool for trainers. Not only does the book explain the dynamics of adult learning and training approaches, it provides 25 learning activities to help keep your programs interesting, fun, and productive. This met all of my expectations.
I've never read a more interactive book!.......2006-02-25
I have read a lot of books recently to increase my work knowledge, and I have to say that this book was the easiest and most fun to read. The writers have done an excellent job getting the reader involved, which increases the amount of information one is able to remember. This book is a real pionner in how to write educative books. Oh, yea, and the content was outstanding!
Telling Aint Training.......2005-06-05
Great book!! Any body in the training field should get a copy. Herald Stolovitch and Erica Keeps keep the reader involved throughout the entire book with constant examples and activities that are very interesting and fun. I am in the US military and training is constant in my job. Techniques are drawn out and easy to understand, making it easy for anybody to comprehend and transfer to their own training. The use of the five step training model really sets up how a training session should be held. I will use this book over and over again in the development of my professional training career.

A great book, even when one's required to buy it.......2007-01-09
I had to buy this book for one of my university's special education credential classes, but the book's a definite keeper. I find that I learned more about what I need to know to do my job from this one textbook than from all my other textbooks combined. At least that's what it seems like most days!
Excellent Reference On Current Teaching Challenges.......2006-06-27
This was a text book for my now completed first education class, "The Diverse Classroom". We did not have to read the entire book, just Chapters 2, 3, 4, and 12, so I base my review on those chapers. This book is rich in detail on the challenges faced in contemporary classrooms. It is well written, and has very complete and thorough references. In addition to raising awareness of key issues, it provides many practical suggestions for application.
The other text book for the class was "Introduction to the Foundations of American Education" by James A. Johnson, et al. That book was not as good by comparison; it was much too preachy.
Perfect condition.......2005-09-16
The book I recieved was in perfect condition, packed well, and better than I expected.

Book Description
This market-leading book provides comprehensive coverage of behavior management concepts and techniques and presents them in a versatile and practical manner for teachers.
This new edition has been shortened and streamlined and chapters flow step-by-step through an actual behavior analysis, using classroom-based examples and practices firmly grounded in research. Content is presented in the order of decision-making by: 1) a teacher who has a student exhibiting challenging behavior in class; or, 2) a student who needs to execute a behavior-change project. The text covers: identifying target behavior, collecting and graphing data, functional assessment, experimental design, arranging antecedents and consequences, generalizing behavior change and discusses the importance of ethical considerations in using applied behavior analysis in the classroom.

Good for Special Educators.......2007-03-08
I had to buy this textbook last year, as I was getting my teaching endorsement in Special Education. It is a good text, although mostly only useful if you are studying this for ceritification (I haven't used since I've been teaching).
Teach yourself to teach kids!.......2006-07-20
This detailed how to book offers a variety of technical interventions and some neccessary theory surrounding Applied Behavior Analysis. It also presents a variety of explanations and examples for classroom use. I really enjoyed the read and highly recommend it. My students also found it usefull!
For learning about ABA and relating to school you cannot beat this book..........2006-05-13
My title states it all. The 7th edition trumps the phenomenal 6th edition in it's inclusion of IDEA 2004/NCLB concepts. It is well worth the price difference between this book and most ABA books.
technical lingo.......2006-03-17
The only thing I really did not like about this book was it had a lot of technical verbage that tends to put one to sleep. The examples and scenarios were helpful in presenting the content.
Applied Beh. Analysis.......2005-09-26
Book was in good shape, however I was surprised by all the highlighting... expected less highlighting.

Customer Reviews:
Great resource!.......2007-05-12
After hearing so much in teacher in-services about "Marzano strategies" I decided to check out his work myself. I was struck by the simple fact they are not his strategies as people talk about. Instead, they are research supported strategies that he and other authors/researchers have compiled and shrunk down into some user-friendly nuggets. The book is very easy to read, provides ample sources of real research, and is practical. The layout is great and the content superb. It is an excellent resource for teachers looking to improve their instruction based on reliable and somewhat traditional methods.
Solid Resource for Educators.......2007-03-17
Provides tangible ideas that any educator can take into the classroom. I would also recommend any book by Kelly Gallagher.
Marzano's Classroom Instruction That Works.......2007-01-09
An excellent text for the first time teacher. Provides techniques and examples to assist in implementation of the techniques. Gives you more teaching tools for your toolbox. Easy to read, taking one chapter at a time. I highly recommend the book.

***THE FOLLOWING REVIEW IS FOR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL EDUCATORS***
Research points out that 75% of those who go into teaching are systematic learners, and then teach systematically, while 75% of students (and the rest of us) are not systematic learners. Systematic teachers are those who will teach you how to ride a bike by first making you sit as they describe the parts and how they work together...that's fine for 25% of students but most of us just need to get on the bike and ride it...from the experience of riding the bike we then have a purposeful framework for...ta da...later systematic instruction...what am I trying to say? This book is "instructional heroin" for systematic teachers...perfect for the suburbs where children have the schema to automatically make connections between concepts...but, from what I've experienced, falls short in an at-risk school.
One perfect example is the section on discovery teaching. It states that there isn't research to back up its superiority as an approach...that's not true...and that it's "time consuming". Well...no...it actually saves time if done correctly...because it will not take the time direct teaching requires to "pound a concept into a child's head" as procedure...it fits brain research as applied to at-risk kids who desperately need to think, and move, and discover...it combines numerous curriculum indicators into meaningful systems...but, most importantly, places new information within a purposeful, motivating environment.
On the upside, Chapter 6 regarding "Non-linguistic" representations is superb...my only problem is that it doesn't address the value of graphic organizers for younger learners as opposed to the older learner...there's plenty of research pointing out the uselessness and/or overuse of graphic organizers in the younger grades...they're great tools...if introduced at the right time/age and with purpose! Unfortunately, I can see teachers in grades pre-k through 3 forcing children to create graphic organizers as a result of this book...yikes!
Ya have to be careful as we found out with NCLB and the research on reading...research can be spun to fit different purposes...especially educational research...if this info. fits your view and you're living in an area where kids have the advantages of a stable home and people talking with them from birth...go for it...for the rest of us...borrow it from the library (my copy was never checked out in three years! - telling)...and then return it.
There's an old saying that teachers very often "efficiently solve the wrong problem"...it's not about efficiency folks...it's about effectiveness. If you apply the ideas in this book blindly without regard to student background or age...you may be doing more harm than good.
A classic!.......2006-07-04
I can't add much to what is already written here. But I must say, these teaching approaches work. The authors back up every method with careful research. Best of all, the methods are described specifically.
There are too many high points to list them all. Here are just three things I especially liked:
1. The explanation of the effects of massed v. distributed practice.
2. Chapter 12 on how to USE the approaches in planning.
3. The Types of Word Problems diagram in Chapter 11. If you teach math above the second grade level, this matrix is in itself almost worth the price of the book.
If you are serious about results from your students, this book is a great tool.

As a mother of a 10-year-old son with AS, I have read through this book once and am sure to be consulting it again and again. I read many excellent reviews of the book, and I think they are right on.
A terrific source of knowledge about Asperger's.......2007-06-08
I purchased this book just after my 9 year old son was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome. It is a wonderful book for anyone who needs to know everything about this condition.
A valuable resource.......2007-05-20
This is the most thorough source of information on Asperger's Syndrome that I've read.
Attwood's updated Guide to Asperger's .......2007-05-14
Attwood has improved on his earlier excellent book on Asperger's. I have a 31 year old son that had not been accurately diagnosed until this year. He has had difficulty his entire life and, with this book, we have finally been able to understand him so much better and to begin to guide him towards a productive life.
With his insite, Attwood brings clarity & hope to these wonderful, yet often misunderstood folks and their families.
The Ultimate Guide!.......2007-05-13
I used this book as the main resource for my thesis paper in grad school ! - I read over seven books front to back on Asperger's and got this one last - as soon as it was available. Mr. Atwood's book was by far the most complete and easy to digest book. I especially liked how he is a proponant of having supportive and well-educated teacher's to help these kids through their daily struggle. I will keep this on my desk for years to come.

Long recognized for its groundbreaking innovations in placing educational psychology firmly within the classroom context, this new edition of the best-selling book examines every educational psychology theory (learning, motivation, and development) and every relevant concept from the teacher's viewpoint. Hallmark cases, in both written and videotape format, introduce real-life into the book, giving readers a window on today's classrooms. With its focus on teaching in the real world, this book covers such topics as: learners (cognitive and language development) and their differences; learning (behaviorism, cognitive theory, constructing understanding, and complex cognitive processes); and classroom processes (theories of motivation, creating productive learning environments, and assessments). For those interested in educational psychology, including teachers, administrators for educational institutions, therapists, and guidance counselors.

Great Text.......2005-12-04
I feel that I need to give this book a review because no one has as of yet. The reviews that are here are on the service of amazon and not on the text itself.
This book is very well written and organized. Yes it is expensive, but well worth the money. I don't usually keep text books, but this is definately a keeper. The text outlines as explains the major theories that are used in eduacation today and there historys. Each theory by each theorists make sense in how they were developed when you look at how each of them were raised. After giving you a strong foundation in the theories, the book leads you through various classroom management ideas as well as ways on how to construct more effective lessons.
A must by for anyone seeking to become a better teacher!
Do not buy from this company.......2005-10-02
I waited almost 3 weeks for this text book. Then, instead of shipping it to me, they refunded my money. Do not buy from here if you want your book in a reasonable amount of time.

I never recieved this book or the money back for it I was told that the book was a fifth additon not a sixth so I chose not to recieve the book, however I was never issued a return.

Customer Reviews:
Easy Reading Research.......2007-02-13
Learning how to decipher the technical jargon surrounding research is never easy. This book makes it easy. Along with thorough explanations and an abundance of examples, there is a bit of humor tossed in. The humor helps break up the intense explanations. There are also many charts and graphs that help synthesize the information into an easy learning format. I would recommend this book for anyone who has to learn about research.
An Easy Read!.......2007-02-07
It's everything you need to know to prepare a thesis in a simple, easy-to-read book! I relied on it so much during my research activities.
Helpful Textbook.......2006-08-11
My only complaint about it was that the cover is warped. I bought a new book, had it delivered next-day, and it won't close properly.
The book has a lot of good information in it. I can see why my instructor chose it for the course in which I am enrolled.
STINKS!!!!.......2006-07-25
This is one of the worst stats text books I have ever seen. It is very hard for someone with a logical mathematical background to understand. Most statistical problems are addressed in text versus examples. I would never suggest this book to anyone!!!
not restricted to just educational context.......2006-05-23
Much of the book's material is not restricted to educational research. It is generally applicable to anyone who wants to perform experimental studies in the social sciences. Where you need to deal with human subjects. Granted, in the book, these subjects are often primary school kids.
But the guidelines given in such matters as the general steps for qualitative research, data collection and data analysis are quite general. Likewise further in the book, when it discusses quantitative research.
The book's discussion of statistics is necessarily abbreviated; directed at a reader unfamiliar with chi square tests and the like. But still easily understood.

Excellent!.......2007-05-12
This is an excellent text if you're into this sort of thing. It seems like a rather well written text. I did learned a thing or two from it.
Best around.......2000-06-05
I teach a research class at the Unversity of Arizona and have reviewed just about every book on the market in the area. This is the best all around book for an introduction into research.
