Book Description

Meet Tasha—single and still searching. A producer for Britain’s most popular morning show working under a nightmare boss, Tash is well-versed in the trials and tribulations of twenty-first century dating. She and her three best friends certainly haven’t lived the fairy tale they thought they would: there’s Andy, who’s hooked on passion, but too much of a tomboy to have moved much beyond the beer-drinking contest stage; Mel, stuck in a steady but loveless relationship; and Emma, endlessly waiting for her other half to propose. Their love lives are only complicated by the sort of men who seem to drift in and out: Andrew—suave, good-looking and head over heels in love . . . with himself; Simon, who is allergic to commitment but has a bad-boy nature that’s impossible to resist; and Adam—perfectly attractive, but too sweet to be sexy.

The bestselling first novel that launched Jane Green, one of the brightest stars in contemporary women’s fiction, Straight Talking sets the record straight regarding the real world of dating, and follows the adventures of Tash and her friends as they search for fulfillment and the right kind of love. Funny, flirty, and ultimately tender, Straight Talking gets at the heart of modern romance.

1 out of 5 stars Self-indulgent twaddle.......2007-04-05

I totally agree with the reviews by Sebastian and Berthap. I have read other, much earlier Jane Green novels before and quite enjoyed them for what they are (enjoyable "chick lit" about love and friendship etc). This one was dreadful though. I had expected it to change perspectives between the different characters but it is all told from the point of view of one very unlikeable vain, superficial character. She is the type of woman I would want to shake (or avoid like the plague) if I met her in real life. I also thought the writing was very lazy, ie, repetitive, contradictory, full of cliches etc etc. I think that after this and Jemima J (which I didn't mind but certainly didn't like as much as other Jane Green books)I will be staying well clear of this writer.

My recommendation for potential buyers - don't buy this book, check out writers Sheila O'Flanagan or Elizabeth Noble instead.

5 out of 5 stars really enjoyed.......2007-03-10

it's a great book and for me the best of jane green. the story was awesome she really suits in some ways so i really like btw this book this my all time second fave book

5 out of 5 stars favorite jane green so far.......2006-12-23

I have read multiple chick lit genre novels and Jane Green remains to be my favorite author. I have read Mr. Maybe and Bookends but this has been my favorite of the three. It was constantly interesting and I grew attached to the character's plight, eager to read this nonstop. It may be more for the younger audience but as a 20 year old it was just right for me!

1 out of 5 stars Horrible character, horrible book.......2006-06-27

This is by far the worst book ever written by Jane Green. The main character, Tasha, is so unbelievably vain, bitchy and superficial, making it difficult to finish this book. The story follows Tasha, who after her breakup with Simon of a few months, is searching for Mr. Right. In the process, she goes through many gorgeous men (mostly Simon's friends), visits her therapist (has mummy & daddy issues), and seeks comfort with her friends (whom she secretly envies and competes with) until she realizes the one for her is possibly right in front of her. What she does to him is so imaginable that I couldn't bear to read but finished this book, hoping she would get what she deserves.

The story drags on and on with no sense of time. Did 1 week or 1 month pass by? All we hear is poor-little-pretty-girl Tasha griping on about how great she looks, he looks, how her friends are pathetic, how great she is to her friends (yeah right).

I've always loved Green's characters but this one was just plain horrible!

1 out of 5 stars Not her best work.......2006-06-23

I am not a fan of the drivel known as "chick lit", but I often give Jane Green a pass because she is amusing at times.

This book is not amusing. I HATE books written in that "urban hipster" book. I hate opening a book and know before the first chapter is out just what a glamourous and shallow life the protagonist leads and how great her clothes are and how good looking she is.

I couldnt sympathize with the decisions she made. I considered her awfully lucky (and her boyfriend awfully stupid) that she ended up happy in the end.

If you like this sort of thing, read "Mr Maybe".

5 out of 5 stars A 'Must Have' Guide for Everybody!.......2006-08-21

Boy, does that title ring true! I also noticed on the cover of this book the wording, "Because that hand in your pocket... isn't yours!" You and I know that everybody wants your money in one form or another. However, I discovered some new ways while reading this book that I just finished. It is Written by David W. Latko, who is the co-host for the national radio program, "Money and More". Impressively, David Latko ranks among the nation's top one percent of financial advisors. I can just imagine how 'in demand' he is. He started off in a middle class neighborhood and moved his way up by helping people.

Where do you usually turn for answers with questions regarding investing, real estate, divorce, automobiles, identity theft, and so much more? If you say your family, friends, neighbors, or your own financial advisor, then you REALLY need to read this book to make sure you are steered on the right path. Looks can be deceiving. Do your homework, starting with this book, because it is YOUR money and YOUR financial future you are looking out for. No one else has such a vested interest in your finances as you need to, except for the slime balls mentioned in this book that you have to watch out for who want your money.

David not only presents practical advice in this book. He also shares memorable stories that yank on the heartstrings and gets your blood boiling. Think you are safe from your own family members who are to inherit your money? Think again and take a look at the story examples in this book. If nothing else, you will at least be aware and prepared just in case.

This book would make great gifts for everyone in your life. What better gift can you give them than to make sure they don't make wrong financial decisions that can destroy their future? I'm going to be buying and giving this book to some of my own family and friends as gifts. I am keeping mine to refer to and share with my children when needed. This book is definitely worth it!

... Story example: Willa and Tony, a retired couple who had a horrific experience with their first financial advisor. They came into some money. They had no idea what to do to invest or what to do.

So they solicited some advice from other retired friends. One of them had received a postcard in the mail a week before, and he passed it along to Tony and Willa. It gave the name and number of a financial advisor who worked in a branch office of a major brokerage which they knew of from hearing about it on TV.

In short order, their new advisor "handled" their prosperity problem. He put them into a range of investments that Willa and Tony did not clearly understand. Then, after a month or so of frenetic activity, he stopped calling-or returning their calls.

With their frustration mounting, they mentioned their problem to a person who happened to be a client of Davids. Turns out the other advisor had locked Willa and Tony into investments that carried staggeringly large up-front commissions; others carried long-term (and expensive) surrender charges.

There was little that could be done. The couple were tied into investments that could not be changed without taking a significant financial hit, in the case of Willa and Tony, it was more than a $26,000 loss.

5 out of 5 stars This book should be a part of everyone's collection.......2006-07-11

This book is valuable on so many levels. Not only does David Latko explain those investments such as real estate, and car buying but he also details the financial repercussions of a divorce and its long-term implications.

Latko uses real-life experiences that hit close to home. So many of the problems that he describes are ones that I've encountered or have friends that have encountered them. His advice and knowledge are priceless.

David Latko really knows what he's talking about. This book was an absolute inspiration and savior to me!

5 out of 5 stars Read this book immediately! .......2006-07-11

David Latko's "Everybody Wants Your Money," skillfully outlines the dos and don'ts of asset management. After reading this book I feel like I've dodged a financial bullet. It is so easy to take the easy way out and do as our advisors recommend without looking at the big picture.

Throughout this book, Latko uses numbers and charts to help visualize his arguments. In this way he effectively shows how the decisions you make today will have an impact on your finances in the coming years.

The advice and wisdom that I took from this book are priceless. He is a master of his field and honestly believes that everyone should make informed decisions.

5 out of 5 stars A truly amazing book.......2006-07-11

After reading David Latko's book I realize how trusting most people are. So many of us put the future of our financial stability in the hands of our "advisors." In reality, these people are out to make a dollar too!

Latko does a beautiful job of outlining the typical financial pitfalls that we all face in a way that is not only easy to understand but fun to read.

This is such an important book for everyone to read. Even if you think you have nothing to worry about - this is really an eye opener!

1 out of 5 stars Tabloid Junk.......2006-04-28

I doubt the voracity of anything in this book... it is a way however for the author to use a famous name and face to promote herself. Fostering "hate" doesn't help anyone.

4 out of 5 stars Sorry to ruin your day, but Dr. Phil is a Slimeball; just check the public record.......2005-11-10

This book was conducted by real award winning journalists if anyone would bother doing any research on the making of this book, not some tabloid reporters. None of the negative stories are refuted in the book because Dr. Phil chose not to respond to any of the allegations in the book. I'm sorry to brake the news to people but Dr. Phil is a slimeball. He really did leave the members of his gym high and dry and and really was severely disciplined by the the licensing board for his sexual exploits with one of his clients. Its all public record. Sure there are people with axes to grind, but not everyone can be lying. The overall portrait is not a mistake. He is a very ambitious manipulative man who will succeed at all costs. Money is king to him. Don't believe the hype. Believe the people who actually worked with him. The book is competetantly written and it is so great to see what a hyprocite this pedantic jerk really is.

5 out of 5 stars This is a MUST READ book about Dr. Phil!.......2005-11-03

I just finished reading this book, "The Making Of Dr. Phil" which is an excellent book, and I recommend it to everyone who wants to see what the Wizard Of Oz looks like behind curtain.
It paints a clear picture of the kind of person Dr. Phil really is, a hypocrite! What is interesting is that this book did not receive much publicity, as there is an alleged campaign against the book by Phil, and most media outlets refused to interview the writers for fear of retaliation from Phil. It also shows that Phil is really just an expert psychological manipulator and a very aggressive entrepreneur. Here are some random bullet points I picked out of the book, it's a worthwhile read...pick it up now!

· Phil is not a therapist, and never really was. He hated doing therapy. He went into psychology as a way to make money. He is an expert negotiator, businessman. He is no longer even a licensed psychologist. Phil just uses psychology as a way to make money. He quit practice and went into the Court business, as that was a way he could use psychology as a weapon, and as a way to make a lot of money, and not have to deal with all these dumb people with their problems!

· Phil has quite a sordid past. His first Gym business went bankrupt, and there is lots of evidence that he was still selling to people, when they knew it was going under. They were just spending all the money that came in, and were not putting the money into the health club. They had people buy long-term contracts, and then sold these contracts to 3rd parties, and even after the gym went under, those folks STILL has to keep paying for it! This was based on a tricky contract Phil designed. After that company went under, Phil left in the middle of the night, and to this day the people who got shafted are still bitter about what happened.

· His first marriage was a disaster, he was controlling, abusive, and there were all sorts of charges of endless womanizing. His first wife speaks out very clearly on all of this.
· "You Seminars" which became Pathways, with Thelma Box, was pure sleazy "charismatic" seminar stuff. This is where Phil started to apply all of his salesmanship and psychological seminar tricks, and started to make some money. Thelma Box spills the beans on how Phil takes credit for other people work, and even tried to scam her near the end. Phil would also abuse the "volunteers" that worked for Pathways.

· Phil is NOT a registered psychologist anymore. He ran into trouble years ago, when a 19 year old woman lodged a complaint against Dr. Phil, she said he sexually abused her, pulling her into his lap, reaching into her blouse, etc. He was severely disciplined by his licensing board in a number of different ways.

· His new company, Courtroom Sciences, CSI, tested the loyalty of his employees by staging calls from people pretending to be from the media. His demands, perfectionism, impatience, infuriated outbursts created an atmosphere of fear, resentment, and anxiety. CSI was a 24/7 job for all his employees, they "own you". Dr. Phil behaved in a sexist manner towards his female staff, calling some of their work "an abortion". He was verbally abusive, swearing, calling a woman a stupid b*tch, etc. Former employees describe CSI as being like a "cult" in the demands it would place on them.

· Dr. Phil Show: Phil got a lavish office, but were very cheap with the crew, no food on-set, 16 hr days, he made the job a "living hell" for the crew, making it "the worst show they had ever worked on". He would yell profanities at his crew, making last minute changes and keeping people up all night. Even his wife Robin was interfering with the lighting, and caused the Emmy award lighting director to be fired! The staff all has to sign non-disclosure agreements, so they could only leak info out. Phil did not bother to learn the names of his crew.

· Phil's ego is so big, he refuses to have any other experts in psychology on other than himself.
· All guests on the show sign massive releases that release them from everything.
· He gets $125,000 per speech.
· He launched products called "Shape Up", in a deal with Alticor, the parent company of Amway.

· Phil presents himself as though he thought up all the valid psychological ideas he uses, he makes it seem they are all his own ideas. McGraw also doesn't seem to follow the APA guidelines or ethics, in how he deals with the people on the show.
· He tries to erase his ugly past from the record, and pretends it never happened. He filed for bankruptcy after his health club went out of business, then left town in the middle of the night, and didn't mention it again. The same with his first marriage, which was a disaster, with allegations of Dr. Phil cheating on his wife many times. He tries to pretend things in his life never happened.
· People are so afraid of Phil, that they will not talk about him, won't return calls, and expressed fear of retaliation from Phil.

1 out of 5 stars 90% Tabloid Journalism.......2005-05-20

I found this book to be predominately Tabloid Journalism. The majority of the book has the exact same tone & phrasing & spin as the rag mags. Just like the rag mags do, the authors took a few facts, a lot of gossip & rumor then added their version of armchair psychology & spin to create a sensationalistic waste of money. When you're done reading, it feels more like you've read a fiction novel than legitimate non-fiction. As any good journalist knows, if you can't get enough corroborating sources, you don't run the story. So why did they bother? Money?

1 out of 5 stars Dr. Phil Basher!.......2005-05-13

If you are a fan of Dr. Phil's, I recommend that you not read this book. I felt it did nothing but tear apart, not only Dr. Phil, but his wife, kids, parents, etc. I'm not so naive to believe that the man is a saint, but it was annoying and obnoxious to read -- numerous times on every single page! -- that this man is a horror!

The jacket describes this book as a sweet story -- however, I liken it to those tabloid rags that only want to find the negativity in someone and go on and on about it.

For example, when Dr. Phil's father graduated college as a 21-year old, he barely passed with C's. When he went back years later, he had done much better. However, the book stated several times, "Well, he might have done better this time, but remember he almost flunked out before."

The book also constantly used derogatory words in describing Dr. Phil and his work. For example, instead of writing "Dr. Phil consistently tells his audience his therapy isn't for everyone," the book writes, "Dr. Phil 'admits'. . . ."

Every thing Dr. Phil did was torn apart. If I wasn't so interested in Dr. Phil's life, I would have tossed the book after the first chapter.

Not for nothing, but if this man is as much a terror as the book tries to convince you he is, I don't think he would be as successful in his business, in his (long) marriage or as a wonderful, loving, devoted father.

Book Description

S.U.M.O. stands for Shut Up, Move On. It's a phrase to say to ourselves (and sometimes others) when we are acting or thinking in a way that is hindering our ability to succeed. It doesn't necessarily mean 'get over it' or 'pull yourself together' (although there may be occasions when both responses are necessary). 'Shut Up' means stop what you're doing, take time out to reflect, let go of baggage and beliefs that hinder your potential. 'Move On' means tomorrow can be different from today, look for new possibilities, don't just think about it, take action.

There are six S.U.M.O. principles that are designed to help you create and enjoy a brilliant life. If you are wrestling with life's challenges, these principles will help you do so more successfully.

1. Change Your T-Shirt - take responsibility for your own life and don't be a victim.
2. Develop Fruity Thinking - change your thinking and change your results.
3. Hippo Time is OK - understand how setbacks affect you and how to recover from them.
4. Remember the Beachball - increase your understanding and awareness of other people's world.
5. Learn Latin - change comes through action not intention. Overcome the tendency to put things off.
6. Ditch Doris Day - create your own future rather than leave it to chance. Forget the attitude 'que sera, sera, whatever will be, will be.'

"A superb book. It combines honesty, humour and inspiration to help people move ahead in life."

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Book!!! SUMO stands out from the rest!.......2006-03-06

Paul McGee delivers a book that doesn't come around very often. As I started to read, I couldn't put it down. His writing style is wonderful, and his story telling is impactful.

Most self-help books primarily focus upon one area of concern. Paul helps inspire you to rise to whatever challenge life hands you. He does this by giving you insight into understanding yourself and others. When it comes to planning and having action in your life, Paul will help challenge your thought process. The Ditch Doris Day section was clever in discussing how you can take ownership of your future.

To make the most of your life, learn the SUMO method. It is simple, straightforward and compelling. I found this book to be very valuable.

4 out of 5 stars Almost there.......2005-08-30

A very well written and amusing book with a number of life changing ideals contained within the pages. I have read a numbe of these books and whilst rating Geoff Burch's "Way of the Dog" as the premium book of this genre, McGee's fluid style of writing and ideas form a very good package. Perhaps reading the "Way of the Dog" together with SUMO will truly give you all you need to get to the top of the tree!

If you entered the lottery once every week, then—sure—you can expect to win. About once in every two hundred and seventy thousand years! But still there are those who believe that if they sit and listen as number after number is called out on the TV, that this will be their week. Their lucky break.

Then there are those that know that they must do more than watch spinning balls to make their lives a success; that in order to do more, to have more, to become master of their own destiny—they must change. They must act. And this book is for them.

Enter Richard Dobbins and Barrie O. Pettman, two self-made millionaires who reveal the secrets of their fantastic business achievements and personal fortunes. Instead it offers practical and realistic advice for turning your brilliant ideas into a money-making business reality.

What Self-Made Millionaires Really Think, Know and Do guides you from business idea to market acclaim. You will discover the secrets of real business - from thinking creatively and setting clear goals to negotiating skills, leadership and liberating time management. 5 out of 5 stars You are achieving if you open this book........2006-07-24

If you are lost, confused, unsure about where you are, what your purpose is, you will close the book with a passion about your self worth, a clear mantra to start and end every day with. You will succeed, buying this book you are already succeeding, you are already achieving your goals.
At times you feel that you are just re-reading the same paragraph, the same lines over and over again.. and then it dawns on you that your entire attitude is so much more confident and inspired.
I set out with the attitude that this book was going to be drawn all over, pages highlighted, words scribbled. It is now the first goal I have achieved recently that I am trully empowered by.
It is not going to give you the format for your business. There are no forms that outline a perfect path to business success, but it forces you to ask yourself hard questions over and over and determine what you think of your self worth.

Whether your business is going to be a plastic manufacturer or a herbal remedist,.. you will understand yourself and where you are going with better clarity.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible Brief Business Review.......2004-02-25

If you are interested to update your business skills or read real business experience which is supported by real business theory. This book is great... Do not look at the name of the book... it is not a book of how to become millionaries in 6 months... this is a great update about business... and it great for entrepreneurs also...

5 out of 5 stars Should Be a Best Seller.......2002-11-03

This is a great book. It is crammed with information for people who want to become millionaires. This book is completely straight talking. Dobbins and Pettman make use of motivational quotes at the end of each section and the book is organized much like a college textbook.
The first chapter is on creativity and the second is on goals. These chapters are riveting. In these first two chapters, the authors borrow from Brian Tracy's Maximum Acheivement and 21 Absoluley Unbreakable laws of money. They tell you where you are going if you are a typical (English) person and where you will go if you get on the right track and cut down on TV, drinking, what they call "Idiot Radio" and start feeding your mind THE BEST stuff possible.
The remaining chapters talk about marketing, time management, sales, leadership, sales and negotiating.
This book definitely give you the intitial building blocks you need to pursue wealth. Like I said it is straight talking and the authors, as professors and businessmen are well qualified to write.
This book is up there for people who desire to be rich. I couldnt put it down. FIVE STARS!

4 out of 5 stars Priorities were Work ,Family.......2004-10-24

10/24/04 Iaococca's book which included much regarding his feeling toward his family, also gave no dissappointment to one like myself who purchased the book based not only due to curiosity about a book by a CEO legend but its index which contained many names with pertainent info when used 'for trivia'instead of being read like 'a fictious novel' which has a "plot".

      4 out of 5 stars A good read.......2004-09-18

Lee Iacocca is obviously successful and also a touch more arrogant in this second book of his. He is full of advice on how to live and writes about political and economic issues of the world with firm convictions to back his theories.

However the best thing about his book is that he is consistent in his outlook and is rock-solid in endorsing the basic values which are as timeless as they are true.

One sore point that sticks out is his constant complaining against the Japanese who, in his opinion, flooded the US markets with cheaply produced products (that's way back in time in the 1980s).

4 out of 5 stars A lot of no-nonsense talk and a whole lot more about values.......2004-05-14

What impressed me most about Iacocca is his incredible frankness. He doesn't beat about the bush. Also, the book clearly depicts his clinging on to crucial values which allowed him to be successful in both fields: at work AND at home. How many businessmen working or even overworking manage to achieve what he has accomplished in the commercial world and yet keep a designated amount of time for his wife and kids consistently? Goes a long way to show how important it is set your priorities right.

As for the style of the book itself, it is fluent and comfortable to read.

True that the book is written in 1987 and the background is two decades old but it still provides interesting insight into both corporate and political America since he's one of those who has 'been there, done that!'. Try it out, it's much fun.
