Book Description
White's TERRORISM: AN INTRODUCTION, a perennial best-seller, is recognized as the most objective terrorism book in the market. In the latest edition, White has rewritten and incorporated parts of his two books DEFENDING THE HOMELAND and TERRORISM to create one new comprehensive text. To reflect this change, the title has been updated to TERRORISM AND HOMELAND SECURITY: AN INTRODUCTION, Fifth Edition. TERRORISM AND HOMELAND SECURITY: AN INTRODUCTION, Fifth Edition strives to discuss the most sophisticated theories by the best terrorist analysts in the world, while still focusing on the domestic and international threats of terrorism and the basic security issues that surround terrorism today. The student-oriented writing style is complemented by rich pedagogy, and there is an adequate amount of research and theoretical discussion to make this the ideal text for both the undergraduate- and graduate-level courses.

Terrorism.......2007-01-22
This book is presently being used in my college course on Terrorism. The author presents the information in a precise and readable way. The book was nothing of what I thought it would be. It presents a unbiased history of terrorism . . .from beginning to the present...with explanations about how terrorism works.
Only problem I have with the book, is the author keeps referring to other Chapters when explaining some of the points. I would have preferred to have everything together.
Definitely a book that will help you understand what is going on in the world today.
What a dilemma......!.......2006-10-18
When local governments prove lack of temerity and live in chattering fear from terrorists in their midst, there will be no measure for panic, and experience indicate that fear breeds atrocities.
Experience also indicate that terrorists atrocities do not remain localized, they tend to spread outside the borders.
The UN should leave no stone unturned until terrorism is defined.
If the UN took, in unison, immediate actions in the past century to quash the plots for terrorist's acts, many sad events on the turn of this century would have not been speeded up so sudden and hysterical.
But the UN remained weak by the `Veto' power.
It is amazing how the `super powers' sat on heaps of weapons delicately stored in their arsenals to be on the look out against each others, tiger vis-à-vis tiger, while the bugs were brewing to bug.
Certainly the chain of events leading to 9/11 was so odd they would have been more fitting the famous James Bond - Agent 007 movies.
But the unfortunate fact is that what happened was gravely true.
The USA is to blame because by remaining so passive in the past and by sitting put and lethargic when bloody acts looked them in the eye, America delivered the `wrong' message.
It is incredible how the American public was left aloof to know if the successive Administrations had been seriously handling, or gathering intelligence, about bloody acts around the world.
It is also incredible how the USA abdicated its responsibilities to the UN waiting in profound ignorance to see how the disasters from `petty' and `localized' wars in small countries will unfold.
We can all recall Jimmy Carter's famous smile (a precursor of inaction) and his inclination towards pacifism. (Rescue attempt of American Hostages in Iran that failed).
Despite Ronald Reagan's gifted articulation, his soft actions were no match to his hard words and the same pacifist messages were again delivered.
The USA must have taken better heed of what went `wrong' in small countries on this planet (Lebanon for example), not to stoop from the slightest incident (the attack, that killed 241 marines, on their compound located at Beirut Airport on October 23, 1983, for example). Immediately after this sad event, the USA pulled their forces out of Lebanon - scuttling away from important pressing responsibilities.
As World Power, the USA should not have been deceived!!!
Georges Bush senior daring reprisals looked pale, later on, when Bill Clinton weakened them by his impulse to deal with internal matters at home mixed what they feared to believe with what they dared not to believe. Despite short periods of `hopes' during his first term, Bill Clinton occupied the media for quite sometime bringing up the image that USA house is crumbling, at its weakest point, leaving a lot to be desired.
Mr White sees the definition of terrorism very difficult to formulate, and it gets more confusing within 'Homeland Security.'
Who should decide what is a terrorist act or otherwise a resistance struggle?
Are the Palestinians terrorists? Were Yitzhak Shamir and Menachem Begin terrorists or resistance?
Are Hizbullah terrorists and who should decide so? Were members of the French resistance terrorists?
Which signposts should support `a definition' to be recognized by all nations? Should references to certain groups in history be taken as signposts, and equated with current ones? And how soon will it be settled?
As long as there are inequities in the pending issues facing the UN there shall never be a universal definition.
Who should take the lead to define the legend `Terrorism' , the UN or the USA. This time, the UN seems to abdicate this responsibility to the USA. Our impression is one that the UN is playing the role of the Carrot and the Stick is relegated to the USA.
Perhaps this very dilemma that has been challenging the USA presidents in the last twenty years of the twentieth century until the beginning of this one, will also determine the shape of nations in our times.
An absolute must read on terrorism.......2005-03-04
This is the best terrorism book on the market. It covers the basics from beginning to end. I would recommend it to anyone interested in the subject. Simply outstanding!
Author lacks credibility........2002-10-05
This author lacks credibility as he cites the Gun Owners of America ... as a terrorist group - right next to Hamas (page 285, in the appendix)...such an allegation, without more to back it up borderlines on defamation. This test is used by Blue Ridge Community College (Weyers Cave, Virginia) in a counter-terrorism course. The instructor advised me that he's giving up the text in future classes because of this one erroneous allegation in the book.
An Unparalleled Terrorism Overview.......2001-10-25
Dr. White is direct and to the point. I recommend this book to all of my friends.

Customer Reviews:
I expected a bit more.......2007-06-08
This is my first introduction to the Dungeons & Dragons-based Forgotten Realms setting. I haven't played any games (well long time ago I played an old LPmud which contained a small part of Underdark) or read any books related to this world. Unfortunately, I cannot give the trilogy more than 3.5 stars. I liked the story and it was a page turner but there are too many drawbacks to my taste.
I started to feel a bit tired towards the end of the third book of Drizzt who seemed to be always in depression. I never felt like worrying about him to loose a fight or so. His friend Belwar fared pretty well despite the loss of his hands. He now bears an enchanted weapon on each stump, one a pickaxe and one a hammer. How on the earth does he cook/eat/goes to toilet? Another big drawback is that the trilogy lacks any romance instead it has too many fighting scenes with too many details than necessary. All in all, the trilogy is OK. I even bought next one The Icewind Dale Trilogy, though I have a feeling it is going to be as predictable as this one and good guys will always win. We will see.
Dark Elf Trilogy.......2007-05-21
I had been wanting to read this trilogy for a long time and finally got them recently from amazon and i could not have been more satisfied. The Dark elf trilogy has tons of action, lots of memorable characters and suspense that you can't put the book down until you see what's going to happen to the main character, Drizzt, next. I love this book and look forward to ordering more from the author R.A. Salvatore.
Fan pick?.......2007-05-07
I know for a lot of people, this is their favorite of Salvatore's work. Personally, I enjoyed it a bunch, but like most his others better (probably because i'm not a fan of Drizzt). Great.. simply GREAT world building and emotional roller coasters through the turmoil of the poor dark elf. I think it's a must for any fantasy fans... as I usually say with all Salvatore's works.
One of the great fantasy series.......2007-04-21
I am an avid reader and my favorite genre is fantasy. I do read other genres, but I prefer good fantasy books to most. I had read LOTR, The Hobbit, The Chornicles of Thomas Covenant and many others but somehow had let the Dark Elf series pass me by. A friend gave me the books and I finally got around to reading them. This series ended up being one of my all-time favorite fantasy series. The books have lots of action and great characters, especially Drizzt. One thing I might mention, I read the Dark Elf Trilogy first and then read the Icewind Dale trilogy. Even though Salvatore wrote the Icewind dale books first, chronologically, the Dark Elf books are first and I preferred reading them in chronological order. I highly recommend this series to anyone who loves a good and exiting fantasy novel. I found myself thinking about the book I was reading quite often and I always had to go back to the book and continue reading to find out what would happen next. AWESOME SERIES!
Happy reading!
Awesome edition.......2007-04-11
After finishing the IwD trilogy this takes us back to Drizzt's beginnings. A must read for fans of Ad&d and fantasy in general.

Demented fairy tales, but in a good way.......2007-06-11
The premise of this wonderful series is to rewrite and expand the world of fairy tales. They characters of which has entered our world fleeing a great evil. Lost of fun, smart and witty, typical american style illustrations for the most part, but nice. Some similarities of premise to the Sand Man series, but not quite as inventive or as extensively research and deep. Start at #1 for the best read.
.....the Valley of the Shadow of Death.......2007-03-14
This sixth volume of the "Fables" series does not disappoint. If you want to start the series at this point....don't. In order to fully appreciate this volume, you should start with Volume 1 and work your way forward. Storylines that have been under development for sometime are tied together at this point.
Don't even read anymore of this review! :-)
In a way, this graphic novel is about what happened to the things 'stolen' from Fabletown after the Adversary's attack and Prince Charming's election as Mayor.
The first part deals with Jack Horner and what he did with the contents of the late Bluebeard's missing treasure room. Up until now he has been portrayed as the pathetic hustler with one flawed get-rich scheme after another. Jack is the kind of guy that got your sister pregnant and then skipped town. He's the guy that's always borrowing money with no intention of paying it back. This is the loser your girlfirned dumped you for.....
Well this is one of his good ideas. Old Jack is a huge success. Even though he's set back at the end, he's still set up for his own personal series that I've reviewed elsewhere.
As satifying as the Jack tale is, it can't compare with Boy Blue's saga. He's left Fabletown stealing the Witching Cloak, the Volpal Blade and his best friends Pinocchio's body. He's returning to the Homelands to 1) Find Gepetto and see if he can fix Pinocchio 2) Reunite with his lost love - Red Riding Hood.
This is where Willingham and company's genius shines. Our nerdy trumpet-playing office clerk is really a man of cunning, brilliance, conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity. It's like Peter Parker and Spiderman. His primary motives are loyalty and love to the people closest to him. For this he risks his life in returning to the Adversary's empire, the Valley of the Shadow of Death referred to in the title. The journey is perilous and skillfully plotted with surprises and revelations along the way.
If I'm ever in jam, I'd want Boy Blue to come to my rescue.
The Adversary and More.......2006-07-19
With shadowed hints about the Homelands and how various Fables escaped this may be the volume fans have been waiting for. But upon opening the cover, they have to wait a little longer. The first two issues tell the tale of Jack. He has left Fabletown and hit the road. Now he is in California and using stolen Fabletown funds to finance a new movie industry. The idea is to make a series of movies about himself and increase his popularity/presence. But we know things do not always work out the best for Jack. I was a little disappointed in this tale as Beast now seems able to change at will as opposed to in relation to Beauty's feelings. This is just wrong, he is Beast nor Bigby.
After Jack's little adventure we finally move to the Homelands. Boy Blue has taken the Witching Cloak, the Vorpal Blade and Pinocchio's body and fled to the Homelands. Now we see what he is up to and what is going on in these fabled lands. Boy Blue is quite the unstoppable force as he secretly works his way from world to world. His quest takes him through many adventures and brings him face to face with many powerful denizens including the Snow Queen and the Emperor. But when trouble takes him to the second part of his quest, Blue and the readers learn the truth behind what has been going on in the homelands. Eventually Blue returns to the Mundane world to face the consequences of his actions and we learn even more secrets.
While Blue is on his adventures, things are not completely quiet in Fabletown. Beast is growing into his role as Sheriff while Prince Charming has his hands full as Mayor. We learn a little more about the Tourist and even meet one. We learn of a traitor and his fate. We even learn a little about hoe the Fable community plans to respond to the Adversary and his incursions into the mundane world.
All in all this volume is packed with adventure, intrigue and revelations. Like earlier in volumes there is a lot of action off-stage. This makes the story move quickly but may be disappointing to some (although they should be used to it by now). If you have been following the series you will really want to read this one. Check it out.
The End Of An Era Is Only Just The Beginning..........2006-06-05
The five-part Homelands arc of Bill Willingham's amazing series Fables drops a huge bombshell on us by finally revealing the identity of the mysterious Adversary. At last, the exiled Fables have a face to place with the name of the being responsible for enslaving their lands and exiling them to the mundane world of ours.
Before I get into the Homelands story, though, I will start off by reviewing the first arc in the collection, Jack Be Nimble. It tells the story of Jack of the Tales in Hollywood, which starts off around the same time as the events of The Mean Seasons. After the Battle of Fabletown in March of the Wooden Soldiers, Jack was able to steal a large amount of treasure from the Fabletown vaults and use it to finance a series of films about his life. He, along with the Fable Jill (who, for some reason, is a miniature woman who has been forced to live at the farm her whole time in our world due to her inability to blend in with "mundies") start a production company and become one of the most "fascinating" people in Hollywood due to their elusive nature. This is a fun arc that leads directly into the spin-off series Jack of the Fables, set to premiere next month.
The Homelands arc involves Boy Blue's return to the Homelands after the Battle of Fabletown. After stealing a cloak with a powerful enchantment, the Vorpal Blade of Jabberwock fame, and Pinnochio's lifeless body, Blue has been trekking across the Homelands in order to defeat the Adversary once and for all and to save Red Riding Hood, his lost love. However, nothing is what it seems to be, with the Adversary's true identity coming as a huge shock as well as a bizarre reunion with Red. An intermediary issue in the Homelands arc shows what has been going on in Fabletown. Prince Charming, Beauty, and Beast, have finally settled into their roles, and they must find out who has been leaking information to the Adversary, while Mowgli, of the Jungle Book, is introduced. He is called a "tourist", which is a Fable agent under the sheriff who travels the world performing missions. Beast's latest mission for Mowgli, though, may prove to be fatal for the man-cub.
All the stories in this collection are good, but it seems like nothing can compare to March of the Wooden Soldiers, which was an amazing story. The Homelands arc also has a strange pace, but it still very enjoyable. And while the revelation of the Adversary's identity might seem like the beginning of the end of the series, it is really a catalyst for many more stories to come. The following story arc is alluded to when the Adversary states that after countless centuries, he has just finished conquering the lands of European Fables, and is prepared to begin enslaving the Arabian Fables. Also, now that his identity is known, the Fabletown Fables may try to strike back, or he may try to make another attempt at enslaving Fabletown. This series is amazing, and it seems like things are only going to get more interesting...
Yet another in the ongoing saga of Fabletown..........2006-05-05
This collects two different story-arcs in the "Fables" comic book series. The first one, in which Jack o'the Tales (basically, he's every "Jack" character in every fairy tale or nursery rhyme) goes Hollywood, wasn't IMO all that interesting, but I never cared much for Jack's character anyway. (And, for those who've read this---what was he _supposed to_ do for her, anyhoo?)
Then we get into the longer story-arc. Boy Blue, armed with the Vorpal Sword and a very powerful magical cloak, heading into the Fables' lost "Homelands" to be reunited with his true love. I don't want to spoil this storyline, but let me say that there are twists upon twists, and the outcome was quite unexpected.
Find it. Buy it. Read it. You won't be disappointed!

at least the art is good..........2007-02-02
in the ultimate universe, ultimate spider-man and ultimate fantastic four are much much much better series than the ultimates (well not ultimates 2, it's great).
1. captain america is probably the only avenger you'll like out of this series. he does whatever he thinks is right, no matter what. and he skipped the decades of american brainwashing from vietnam on, so you know he's good to go.
2. nick fury and shield are pretty annoying, and i don't like how they virtually run the ultimate universe. they shouldn't have invisibility and stuff like that. takes away from the real superheroes.
3. thor is a hippie. i'm pretty sure the gods don't like hippies.
4. the hulk and banner are entirely unsympathetic. banner/hulk is the greatest character in the marvel universe, yet here banner becomes the hulk and kills almost a thousand people just to give the ultimates something to do. no way jose. banner should be a good, but conflicted guy. but as presented here he's almost as big of a scumbag as hank pym.
5. hank pym is a scumbag. ok he's irredeemable (ok i know that's o'grady but you know what i mean).
6. the pop references on almost every page are pretty bad. imagine how dated they will look over time. clever writers would have made up celebrities and pop references, that way they could have tied them into future stories or problems. then marvel would have new characters and plots voila. instead it's like reading a people magazine. yuck.
7. oooh tony stark can't be arsed to go battle evil, he's partying with z-lister shannon elizabeth. blech.
to be fair the ultimates 1 book 2 is 100x better than ultimates 1 book 1. but it still isn't great by any means.
Great Action, Drama and Laughs! Not For Kids Though!.......2006-09-08
I have to say that I've gotten a kick out of The Ultimates from Marvel! This take on the Avengers' legend I definitely like!
In particular, I love the revision of Captain America! He's still the patriotic and brave solider that he's always been but now he's got more bite and I love it! I loved seeing him put foot to a** on Giant-Man over what he did to The Wasp. He also showed some smarts and a devious side that the original version never showed (though he wasn't dumb by any means)! I won't give away what he does but man its both brilliant and hilarious! This version of Cap is one that definitely can respect.
The story as a whole was just fantastic! The characters were done very well and the story was great! Highly recommended buy but parents, DO NOT BUY THIS FOR YOUR LITTLE ONES AS ITS DEFINITELY NOT FOR CHILDREN!
Ultimates Vol. 2 ends Doubts.......2006-06-02
This volume of Ultimates 2 took me to town! Well, not literally. But it brought some closure to the Pym storyline that ended the last volume on a depressing note. Also, any doubts that I had about Captain America being sort of Boy Scout-ish was ended with this volume. Cap has some great one-liners, and backs them up serious tactful manipulation. Just goes to show that Cap's brawn comes with brains too, which I liked. This volume also introduced Hawkeye, Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver. Hawkeye had a somewhat decent characterization going on, but not alot was done with the two mutants which I was a little dissapointed by.
Essentially, this story kept me hooked from begining to end with great art, great themes, and great writing. Sure, the alien bit's a little cheesy (even the characters claim this), but it was pulled off in such a way to make it believeable. If you're into Ultimate Marvel, I'd definently reccomend this to add to your colelction.
*WARNING* This comic book is not for kids. And that's the way I like it.
The Greatest Trade Paperback.......2006-05-18
I have been reading comic books for well over ten years now, and nothing compares to this volume.
The widescreen superheroics created in Stormwatch and The Authority is perfected in The Ultimates to a T. And while volume one provided the necessary genesis and obligatory exposition for the Ultimates, this volume throws the action at us on a scale that can only be described as epic.
The art is spectacular. Never has Hitch and Neary's work looked better, and I felt like I was watching a summer blockbuster the entire time. And man, can Millar write action. I was wowed on every page, and have never felt more satisfied to be a comic reader.
If this book doesn't impress you, nothing in comics will.
Put to the Test.......2006-02-26
The first volume of The Ultimates, while a little slow, ended great. The battle between the Hulk and the rest of the team was amazing, and the fight between Hank and Janet Pym was not only great, but completely unexpected. Picking up right where the last volume left off, Janet is being rushed to the hospital, Hank flees to Chicago, and Captain America reads a speech at a vigil for the people who died due to the actions of Bruce Banner/the Hulk. Things are somewhat strained on the team, but now that they've had a real fight, they are prepared for their next battle. We also learn that there is a black ops team that works in tandem with the Ultimates, who are expressly for public viewing. This team consists of Black Widow/Natasha Romanova, Hawkeye/Clint Barton, the Scarlet Witch/Wanda Maximoff, and Quicksilver/Pietro Maximoff (both of whom are children of mutant terrorist Magneto).
The main plot of Homeland Security deals with an alien threat. A hostile race of aliens, known as the chitauri (who are a reference to the skrull from the 616 universe) have been attempting a silent invasion since before WWII, and they nearly succeeded when they allied themselves with the Nazis. Captain America was able to hold them off before he was frozen, but they have returned to finish the job.
In addition to the main storyline of the chitauri invasion, the fallout of the Pym's argument is addressed very well. The humanity of the characters is definitely here, and is done very well. Hank and Janet Pym have a very real relationship, and Captain America, who is still getting over the fact that it's no longer 1945, has a troubled reaction to their troubles.
Bruce Banner's arc is also very well done. After his rampage as the Hulk in downtown New York, he is being kept in confinement and is constantly being pumped full of drugs to keep his aggression levels down. He is kept around due to his vast intellect, but he has pretty much been erased from existence; Nick Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D. deny his affiliation, and the government has gone to great lengths to ensure that no one knows that Banner is the Hulk.
While the drama is great, it wouldn't be a Marvel book without a little action, and The Ultimates really delivers on that front. The all-out war between the Ultimates and the chitauri was nothing short of bliss, especially when they used their "secret weapon".
Homeland Security is a great collection of issues that shouldn't be missed. The Ultimates is definitely a very worthy book.

A Unique Item!.......2007-06-26
This wonderfully llustrated history gives a great overview of Jewish heritage and a context for today's politics. A great way to get a grounding in the subject for those of Jewish heritage who missed Hebrew School, or others wanting insight into the tragedies and traditions informing modern Judaism (and Zionism). Would be great for teens, but also for adults looking for the big picture.
Fun and Amazing Graphics.......2007-04-12
A friend let me read her copy and I just ordered my own.
The story is both enlightening and entertaining.
And the web doesn't even do justice to the graphics. They are even more amazing in print. I think fans of history (both ancient and contemporary) and those who like graphic novels will love this new book.
It's Amazing!.......2007-03-29
This is the first time I've ever reviewed an item at Amazon.com, but I think this book is so special, I had to share my comments.
The illustrations are breathtaking and the content is interesting, easy to read and digest, and through provoking. I love every page!
This book is the perfect gift for anyone interested in history, art, Israel, or politics.

Tears (of Laughter) Will Develop in Your Eyes as You Peel the Layers (Turn the Pages) of the Onion.......2007-06-11
The excellent news parody The Onion has bound together another collection of their weekly newspaper, telling us their readers stories the main networks don't seem to want to tell us. The Onions inside are from the editions published online and in print between the 18th of November 2004 and the 14th December 2005. Some of the stories within are a bit shorter as they are incomplete than their original online format but the humour happens in what is there along with the headlines.
Whilst the Onion has a huge cult following, not everyone has heard of it. If you've enjoyed parody news TV shows such as CNNN or its still going spin off The Chaser then this is the book for you. Also if you're still unsure about buying this book you can just type in the onion dot com into your computer see the latest Onions and you'll know what your getting.
Other great parody fiction is out there but to name three you may be interested in if you enjoyed this book are Where's Bin Laden? by Daniel Lalic which is an excellent parody of the Where's Wally (Waldo in North America) series. 101 Places Not to Visit: Your Essential Guide to the World's Most Miserable, Ugly, Boring and Inbred Destinations by Adam Russ which is an excellent parody of those travel books that only mention the good things about destinations. The Self-Destruction Handbook: 8 Simple Steps to an Unhealthier You is an excellent and extremely funny parody of all those annoying self help books that want to make you a better you.

A 'must' for any public library's humor section........2007-02-09
The Onion is the nation's best satirical publication and here covers the headline news events from November 2004 through December 2005. HOMELAND INSECURITY offers funny editorials, news in brief, opinion polls and articles on all sides of pop and political culture, offering up its fare in a fake news form which comes complete with black and white photos throughout. I found this to be a good introduction to emergency management. I am using it in my course on Disaster Preparidness: medical consequency management. Well written and easy to read for the novice.

This book is more useful for someone in government. If you need emergency planning/mangement for a business or industry, the book is a good starter but will be limited. Too bad it was published right before Katrina.

Some Serious Omissions in the First Edition.......2006-06-06
"Homeland Security: A Complete Guide to Understanding, Preventing and Surviving Terrorism", contains two chapters addressing the Islamic aspects of the current era of terrorism and jihad activity: Chapter 4, "The Mind of the Terrorist: Why They Hate Us", and Chapter 5, "Al-Qaida and Other Islamic Extremist Groups: Understanding Fanaticism in the Name of Religion". Each chapter is complimented with endnotes (29 for Chapter 4, and 19 for Chapter 5) and the absence of a bibliography suggests that the endnotes comprise the primary sources for each chapter. There are no Islamic sources.
Chapter 4, "The Mind of the Terrorist: Why They Hate Us" addresses Palestinian Terrorism, Iranian Terrorism, Suicide in the Name of Islam, Conditions For Terrorism and other considerations such as strife, poverty, ignorance, political oppression as motivations and sources of terrorist activity. The mandates in Islamic law animating jihad and directly influencing the terrorist mindset are not addressed.
In Chapter 5, "Al-Qaida and Other Islamic Extremist Groups: Understanding Fanaticism in the Name of Religion", the authors identify the five pillars of Islam and simply state that Zakat is the Giving of Alms.
A primary legal reference within the Sunni tradition, Ahmad ibn Naqib al-Misri's "Reliance of the Traveller: A Classic Manual of Islamic Sacred Law", tells the Homeland Security Professional that there are eight obligatory disbursements for Zaket. Three of them support warfighting and impact Homeland Security: Those Whose Hearts are to Reconciled; Those Fighting for Allah; and, Travelers Needing Money.
"Those Whose Hearts Are To Be Reconciled" (Traveller, page 270-271) states that "alms" may be given to ensure propagation of the faith in initial stages. Those to be reconciled include: Chief personages of a people (with weak or fledgling institutions needing economic support to improve or whose peers may be expected to enter Islam); Heads of a people who collect zakat for Islam from Muslims living near them who refuse to pay it; and, Heads of a people who fight an enemy for Islam at considerable expense and trouble to themselves. The obligatory disbursements for those whose hearts are to be reconciled constitute funding mechanisms facilitating the establishment of Islamic footholds in non-Muslim areas and the consolidating of those footholds to increase Islamic influence.
"Those Fighting for Allah" (Traveller , page 272) includes those engaged in Islamic military operations for whom no salary has been allotted and are to be "Given enough to suffice them for the operation even if affluent of: weapons; mounts; clothing; expenses: and, for the duration of the journey, round trip, and the time they spend there." Current interpretation and practice has been to provide expenses in supporting such person's family during this period. The obligatory disbursements for those fighting for Allah constitute a funding mechanism for combat, combat support and combat service support operations. This disbursement category is ideally suited for supporting autonomous, decentralized, asymmetrical military operations.
"Travelers Needing Money" (Traveller, page 272) include those who are "passing through a town in Muslim lands where zakat is collected or whose journey was not taken for the purpose of disobeying Allah, if such a person is in need, he is given enough to cover his personal expenses and transportation, even if he possesses money back home." The obligatory disbursements for travelers needing money defrays personal expenses and transportation costs associated with individual movement to and from conflict zones.
Continuing with Chapter 5, the authors touch very lightly on jihad failing to discuss the operational considerations both animating the enemy and whose understanding is essential to the Homeland Security Professional.
In addition to "Reliance of the Traveller," Al-Imam Abu Zakariya Yahya's, "Riyad-us-Salihee", (Darussalam, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia: 1998), p. 976-1016 and Ibn Rushd's "The Distinguished Jurists Primer", (Vol I and II, Garnet Publishing, Reading, UK: 1994), 454-487, clearly identifies combat, combat support and combat service support roles for the Muslim community when one initiates Jihad. There is clear legal guidance on the following points: upon whom support to Jihad is obligatory; conditions affecting the obligation; identification of the persons to be fought; the scale of harm that may be inflicted on the enemy; conditions for the declaration of war; the identification of the number from whom retreat is not permissible; permissions for truce and the two reasons for waging war (to force the conversion to Islam and to secure the payment of the "jizya").
These essential considerations for assessing the present environment are neither addressed nor referenced in "Homeland Security" but may be readily accessed by reading Islam's legal texts.
All first editions are, in essence, first drafts. If the second edition of "Homeland Security" incorporates Islamic sources and objectively explores the influence of Islamic law on the tactical, operational and strategic elements of today's terrorist environment, the Homeland Security Professional will have a truly invaluable desk reference.
A must read for everyone concerned with National Security!!!.......2005-06-15
Homeland Security (The Mcgraw-Hill Homeland Security Series) by Mark Sauter and James Carafano is an all encompassing work that is a must for students and Homeland Security professionals alike. It is a comprehensive account of the evolution of Homeland Security, and the cornerstone text for a series of our continuing education courses.
Hard to put down! The work is divided into three parts, each building into the next. The first part is a historical perspective of Homeland Security from Colonial America, through today and the challenges imposed by contemporary terrorism. The second part is an in-depth look at the terrorist, their mindset, training, tactics and weapons. In a very clear manner, it enables the reader to understand Jihadists, Transnational and Domestic terrorists, and their goals. The final part outlines the issues of organization, policies, programs and concerns that have rapidly developed since the attacks of September 11th. It effectively culminates with the final chapter, The Future of Homeland Security: Adapting and Responding to the Evolving Terrorist Threat While Balancing Safety and Civil Liberties, which looks at terrorism, technology and the future of Homeland Security. The five appendices provide a wealth of reference and background material, and each chapter ends with a summary and quiz that makes it a natural choice for academic courses.
Whether you are a student, educator, law enforcement officer, first responder, CERT Team member, Homeland Security professional or concerned citizen, this book will give you a solid and insightful perspective of homeland security yesterday, today and tomorrow. It will be a key text in my reference library for years to come!

Customer Reviews:
Useful introduction to the many facets of homeland security.......2007-05-15
This is one of the first generation texts on homeland security. As such, it has a somewhat ad hoc feel to it, as though these (and other) authors are feeling out just what a text on homeland security is all about. The purpose of the book is described on page xiv: "The intent of this book is to provide a primer on homeland security for emergency managers, students of emergency management, and for the countless public and private sector individuals who find themselves suddenly thrust into the ever-expanding domain of homeland security."
The scope of the book is wide, as it covers a lot of territory. One necessary consequence of this is that coverage of individual topics can be a bit thin. On the other hand, the breadth of coverage is itself a virtue. One must trade off a bit of depth for breadth.
The book begins with a discussion of an historic overview of terrorist threats. As such, it does "set the table" for the rest of the book. However, there is actually very little on terrorists, their tactics, etc. Thus, the chapter seems to be written in something of a contextual vacuum. At some point in the volume, there should probably be a chapter on what we know about terrorists.
The book also explores the statutory and organizational infrastructure for homeland security. The resulting chapters are serviceable. Chapters proceed with coverage of safety and security; mitigation, prevention, and preparedness; response and recovery; communications; technology. The final chapter is forward looking, exploring the future of homeland security; it also considers the lessons learned from the reorganization of FEMA under the Department of Homeland Security.
Thus, while there is a "generic" sense to this book, it covers a great deal of territory and provides a broad-based introduction to the subject of homeland security. As such, a useful volume.
Good Start.......2006-06-16
I am a former Army intelligence officer and I think that this was a good first cut at the topic. I was enrolled in a Homeland Security class that used this text. We studied the system and response of DHS and then the following week Katrina hit followed by Rita. What should have happened and what actually happened leave much to be fixed. The description of terrorism was so lacking that the instructor allowed me to teach the class. The information on chemical and biological agents looked like it came out of a Hazmat class manual. To be a better book it needs to be updated and revised. FEMA has free online classes which the authors should consider in their update. This book was great as no other book attempted to put together the area of homeland security under the new DHS.
Professor.......2006-02-18
This is an excellent book talking about the policies, organization, and functions of the Department of Homeland Security. The author's provide an historical overview of the terrorist threat which is concise and highlights the September 11 timeline. The life cycle of emergency managment is presented by introducing several case studies which provide incite into failures of preparedness and response to terrorist incidents worldwide. The importance of communications and technology is discussed to help prevent and deter terrorism in security organizations. It is a book that everyone in security management should read.
The dynamic that is Homeland Security.......2005-10-24
Introduction to Homeland Security provides a comprehensive view of the dynamics of homeland security in the United States from the view of experienced emergency management facilitators. This is accomplished by providing a historical overview of the terrorist threat which culminates with the September 11th terrorist attacks and thereafter the various legislative, executive orders and organizational actions which lead to the largest re-organization of the federal government in recent history which results in the formation and creation of the United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS). An in-depth discussion and view of the pre-Katrina DHS are provided with applicable questions regarding the functionality and capabilities of this new department. Homeland security hazards are discussed with emphasis also placed on the safety and security of various aspects of the infrastructure of our society. The text also discusses the addition of prevention to the comprehensive emergency management life cycle of mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery. The book concludes with a discussion of the importance of effective communications with special emphasis placed on risk communications; the various types of technology being employed and various technology players and their activities; and, provides a discussion of the future of homeland security.
This book is especially beneficial in pointing out, through probing questions, that the federal government and bureaucracy thereof, both legislative and executive, cannot remember and/or don't listen to the lessons learned of the past, which ensures that we will be repeating them again, to the suffering and detriment of our citizens. The authors of this text were already asking questions regarding the security of our homeland in all regards, to which the answers have been so effectively pointed out through the Hurricane Katrina response and recovery failures of the DHS. For an understanding of the dynamic that is homeland security, and the core answer to what must be done to secure our homeland this book is a must read.

Book Description
The True Story of Two Master Criminals Aiming to Take America's Biggest Prize and Our Security Agencies' Systematic Inability to Stop Them by the Former Intelligence Agent Recruited to Foil Their Plan
Robert Sensi has worked for the CIA, the Republican National Committee, and, as cover, for Kuwait Airways and the Kuwaiti royal family. He has twice served time in federal prison for embezzlement and fraud. Richard Hirschfeld, originally recruited to the CIA by Sensi, boasts an equally illustrious past: in the seventies he duped investors out of millions of dollars, later allegedly stole a $12-million payoff from Ferdinand Marcos intended for Ronald Reagan, and came within a hairbreadth of conning the U.S. Senate out of $50 million.
When the Department of Homeland Security suspects that Sensi and Hirschfeld are at the center of an investigation involving money laundering and the funding of Al Qaeda-and when their supposedly comprehensive database turns up little to no information on either man-it takes onetime spy Larry Kolb to crack the case, ultimately orchestrating Hirschfeld's spectacular capture. But when Kolb begins to connect the dots, he realizes something even more sinister is afoot, and that he's on to the biggest possible con with the highest political stakes.
Customer Reviews:
Excelent story and well written.......2007-05-14
This book has some very interesting insight into a real story that depicts how some things work in this world... how someone can get all the way to the "kitchen" with the Bush's and be an outlaw. Very well written novel also! Only con would be some far fetched conspiracy theeories laid out at the beginning of the book and never proved during the book.
Fiction Is Stranger Than Truth.......2007-04-23
I'm sure most of what Mr. Kolb says is true about Hirschfeld and Sensi but I suspect he uses this capital to serve his ultimate goal -- to trash everything Republican. As a hit piece of this magnitude he is unconvincing. Ironically, if the picture Kolb has painted of these two con men is accurate and their abilitiy to use powerful figures is proven, then why is he not looking to find innocence in the many Republican politicians that seem to have been used? Why does he automatically see conspiracy on a wider scale within the GOP?
He seems to trust "The Gray Eminence" and other people he has actually talked to like Engin Yesil. John Kerry is a war hero (Bush a poseur). He uses the term neo-con as a perjorative. Wolfowitz, Rice et al are war mongers out of touch with what....the omniscient benevolence of the Kerry team? A balanced outing of the "facts" would have at least included some rebuttal. There is none. He says at the beginning he is non-partisan. Nice try.
He believes he is saving the world from evil. Has Kolb read Bill Sammon's book "At Any Cost - How Al Gore Tried To Steal The Election"? How that egalitarian and progressive organization, the Chicago Daley Machine was called in as a fixer for the Florida recount? There is no paucity of evil in America. Why be seletive?
The fact is that both parties have operatives. Both parties are involved in scullduggery. And because of the hightened political climate both parties have a stake in deeming the other an enemy. I think the day of a mere advisarial relationship between left and right is over.
We all pick sides. Kolb is on the Democratic team.
criminals, no conspiracy.......2007-03-19
An entertaining book, as long as you don't believe the far-fetched conspiracy theories. The author takes a fact here, a factoid there, on and on and tries to put them together for a grand conspiracy. As far as I could tell, it's really just the story of some con men, talented and interesting though they were.
becomes weird.......2007-03-12
This started off as interesting, but I lost interest when he started writing page after page about Muhammud Ali as the greatest man who ever lived. Toward the end, the book became a reason to bash the right, although the author claims he isn't. Kold is a left wing partisan, and it shows. Too bad, as the books holds real promise.
FASCINATING .......2007-03-08
America at Night is one of the most riveting books I've read in a long while. I absolutely couldn't put it down. Not only is the story completely intriguing, but Kolb--unlike many true crime authors--can really write. The man is obviously a born storyteller. And in this case, the story he's telling happens to be true--which makes the book all the more fascinating. I highly recommend this to anyone interested in how politics really works in this country, or anyone that just enjoys a compulsive, compelling read.
