Book Description

When God Writes Your Love Story challenges singles to take a fresh approach to relationships in a culture where love has been replaced by cheap and diluted sensual passion. This book shows that God's way to true love is not some dull and lifeless formula, but brings fulfillment and romance in its purest, richest, and most satisfying form.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2007-05-12

This book I would recommend for young teens as well as adults. Anyone who has looked for love, but in all the wrong places, or anyone who is uncertain that they will ever find love at all; this book will comfort and guide you. Using scriptural backing, this books tells the reader how they must first love their heavenly King before they can every hope to find their earthly handsome prince.

This book was such a blessing to me. A must read for all young Christian adults!

3 out of 5 stars I tried to make the most of it.......2007-04-29

I think the book is ok in that it offered new insight into my relationship with God that I was unaware of, and for that, I appreciate the book. However, as "the ultimate approach to guy/girl relationships," I don't think it was quite that. I think that they should have elaborated more on what is wrong with most current guy/girl relationships and talked about how we should approach these differently, both in the aspects of friendship and dating. The prime example would have been to use their own relationship as an example, which they did not. The reader just discovers one day (towards the end of the book) that they were friends who were not even considering marriage and the next thing you know, they're married. Maybe they elaborate more in their other books, but I am not buying those when stuff like that should have been explained in a book that is supposed to tell you the "ultimate approach to guy/girl relationships!" I think that their book titles should reveal that this is one couple's limited perspective because even the references of other people's experiences as examples do not tell you much.
Also, they seem somewhat limited in their experience and their thinking to be telling others how to correctly approach these relationships. In the aspect of loving yourself and growing closer to God, the book is good, but I don't really think it helps too much with relationships.
Another thing is the writing style was kind of a turn off to me, and I found it to be annoying. But I think that perhaps it may appeal to some people. It seems somewhat simple and patronizing, which immediately made me think this book was for high schoolers, but even when I was at that age, I still would have regarded it as too simple. Plus their humor did not appeal to me so they should try to keep that to a minimum in their future books. Honestly, they sounded as if they were young adolescents when they wrote this, and there is a difference between trying to appeal to a certain age group and sounding like you are from that age group.
Lastly, they should not paraphrase what is in the Bible. I actually did look up something they paraphrased and had a completely different understanding of it so I think they should write exactly what is in the Bible and then offer their perspective. Overall, I tried to get as much out of it as I could, but I would not want to buy another book written by them.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book that encourages a relationship with the Lord.......2006-12-29

I found this book to be so refreshing. Instead of saying, "Here's how to find and keep a good relationship," the authors encouraged me to focus on the Lord rather than a finding a man. They showed how a healthy relationship with God can make a romantic relationship work. I love the fact that they never say things like, "If you have this relationship with the Lord, your spouse will definitely show up," or "All you need to do is get right with the Lord, then Prince Charming will ride up on his horse." They use scripture to show that Jesus should be your focus, that just because your relationship with God is thriving doesn't mean that you will (or won't) meet Mr./Ms. Right. The point is loving God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength. I highly recommend this book to anyone in any relationship status.

2 out of 5 stars some good, some bad.......2006-12-07

unfortunatly today many people reading books take the words of books as absolute truth and that scares me a little with this book. In one chapter Leslie is talking about a break up with a boyfriend and mentions she was experiencing a pain she was never meant to experience. Hello!!?!? are you kidding me Leslie? Of course you were supposed to experience it, if you hadn't, chances are you wouldn't be where you are today! They kept talking about "God taking the pen in their life" He always has the pen... you think you do but you don't... this book bothered me in those ways, but they did have some good things to say, such as their chapter on why you should want to keep your purity instead of making rules about it. overall.. i wouldn't recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Uplifting and poignant.......2006-11-28

This is the first Christian relationship book that I didn't want to throw across the room in frustration. At no point are Eric and Leslie Ludy condescending to their readers - they tell it like it is, and touch on deeper points that beg for more study.

I admit, I loved that there are stories from familiar Greek lore. I loved that the authors tell bits of their own stories, and that their stories aren't "I was always good and pure, so here's why you should be." It does help that their story has a happy ending. The chapter dealing with singlehood is great, too - reminding us that couplehood is not the ONLY happy outcome.

Highly recommended.

This marvelous collection by one of science fiction's most thoughtful and graceful writers belongs on the bookshelf of anyone interested in literary science fiction.

Collected here for the first time, Ted Chiang's award-winning stories--recipients of the Nebula, Sturgeon, Campbell, and Asimov awards--offer a feast of science, speculation, humanity, and lyricism. Standouts include "Tower of Babylon," in which a miner ascends the fabled tower in order to break through the vault of heaven; "Division by Zero," a precise and heartbreaking examination of the disintegration of hope and love; and "Story of Your Life," in which a linguist learns an alien language that reshapes her view of the world. Chiang has the gift that lies at the heart of good science fiction: a human story, beautifully told, in which the science is an expression of the deeper issues that the characters must confront. Full of remarkable ideas and unforgettable moments, Stories of Your Life and Others is highly recommended. --Roz Genessee

Book Description

tory for story, Ted Chiang is the most honored young writer in modern SF. His first published story, 'Tower of Babylon,' won the Nebula Award for 1990. Subsequent stories have won the Asimov's SF Magazine reader poll, a second Nebula Award, the Locus Award, the Theodore Sturgeon Memorial Award, and the Sidewise Award for alternate history. He won the John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer in 1992. Now, collected for the first time, are all seven of this extraordinary writer's stories so far-plus an eighth story written especially for this volume. What if men built a tower from Earth to Heaven-and broke through to Heaven's other side? What if we discovered that the fundamentals of mathematics were arbitrary and inconsistent? What if there were a science of naming things that call life into being from inanimate matter? What if exposure to an alien language forever changed our perception of time? What if all the beliefs of fundamentalist Christianity were literally true, and the sight of sinners being swallowed into the Pit was a routine event on city streets? These are the kinds of outrageous questions posed by the stories of Ted Chiang: Stories of your life . . . and others.

5 out of 5 stars Single-Handed Resurrection of the Short SF Story.......2007-02-04

This is the kind of book that makes you love a genre again. The stories collected in this volume are -- and should be -- touchstones of modern short science fiction. Each one takes a seemingly mundane scientific idea and builds upon it a surprising, thoughtfully constructed analysis of some aspect of the human condition.

The best examples are the title story -- in which a linguist studies an alien language and learns to think as the aliens do. She inhabits a world without future or past, or cause or effect, and foresees her own child's death.

The Tower of Babylon is another excellent story, though the many plot twists -- or rather, setting twists -- are too delicious to give away by describing it.

This book is recommended to anyone who would like their consciousness to be gently, but firmly, pried open.

5 out of 5 stars Among the best.......2006-11-10

Unfortunately Ted Chiang so far has only written the short stories published in this collection. You will enjoy every single story and the unusual thinking that was put into it. I hope that with his creativity Chiang will give us much more food for thought in the future.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Collection.......2006-10-15

Ted Chiang and Jeffrey Ford are my favorite short fiction authors. Ted writes imaginative science stories of grand possibility and splendid "what if."

I met Ted Chiang at a convention a year ago and he is thoughtful, fascinating and above all, humble. This is a man who writes brilliantly, yet wouldn't admit to his own talent.

I can't pick a favorite story because they're all with me and show up in my thoughts at times: contemplative stories. They caused me to look closer at who I am as a person and who we are as humans. No better effect can a story have.

CV Rick

5 out of 5 stars Stories of my life.......2006-06-29

It's not often that I learn theology from science fiction. Chiang's "Hell is the Absence of God" caused me to completely rethink my view on miracles, signs and proof of God's existence, as well as the problem of evil. A truly provocative question: even if there were irrefutable proof of God's existence, would that eliminate the need for faith? Would everybody love and worship God? Read the story before you jump to conclusions. Of course the rest of the stories are also marvelous. A master craftsman is at work. Especially mind-blowing are "Understand" (which is mind-blowing in the most literal sense of the term), "Story of your life" and "Division by Zero". The latter has a brilliant dual structure which parallel's the character's breakdown with her proof that all mathematics is inconsistent. Theological lessons and great sci-fi ideas aside, this is simply great fiction, period. Read, re-read and ponder these stories...of your life and others.

5 out of 5 stars Stories I gladly share with others.......2005-04-14

My fellow reviewers may have their favorites, but I believe everyone will find 3 or 4 of the selections to be in their thoughts for days after reading them. I thoroughly enjoy having a family member or guest pass a few spare minutes reading one of these stories and the inevitable discussion which follows. Rarely do I re-read anything, yet within a month I was back into these pages seeking a deeper understanding of Ted Chiang's ideas. I anxiously await any further work by this outstanding author and hope he has plans for a novel.

4 out of 5 stars Good account of Mem's life..........2005-12-29

I enjoyed this quick read. Mem is such a clear and concise writer. It provides a entertaining overview of Mem's life experiences. Contrary to the other review on Amazon this book BARELY covers the process of getting a children's book published. I would estimate that 5 pages MAX of the over 200 pages is devoted to this so don't buy this book for this reason. Otherwise a worthwhile read if you wanted to know more about what goes on behind the scenes of writing a children's book.

5 out of 5 stars Trememdous insight into writing children's books.......1999-11-21

Having never read a Mem Fox book, it was the title of this book that caught my eye. For anyone who has fancied writing children's books, this is a must-read. It covers the writing and editing processes and provides insight into obtaining publishers and illustrators. Great book, as are all of Ms. Fox's books.

5 out of 5 stars Great book, tell your friends.......2002-07-23

I had to read this for an anthropology class prior to visiting Cameroon, little did I know how accurate it would be, I don't even think I grasped the whole story the first time because I had never been in that culture. This is an excellent work, fast reading and very informative. Good for anyone who wants to learn about Cameroonian culture or just another view of the world in general.

5 out of 5 stars This book is multiple faces of postcolonial Camaroon........1999-05-23

Your Madness, Not Mine - A Review. "We're the matches that will light the gunpowder that has been lying cold like ash. If we don't take a step who will . . . ?" This definitive assertion and rhetorical question, posed by an enterprising Beba woman in Juliana Makuchi Nfah Abbenyi's collection of short stories,Your Madness, Not Mine,is evocative of the author's own project which in many ways is as potent and innovative as the above metaphor. To read Makuchi, a Cameroonian woman writer, and postcolonial intelligentsia in the West, is to land at once in a rich, complex and contradictory world, bubbling with tensions ensuing from gender conflicts, polyglossia and constant shiftings of center / periphery, self / other dichotomies. In a span of nine short stories, Makuchi guides us through the contours of her native African land which shares the patriarchal history with the rest of the world, while exposing its own unique gender quarrels, compromises, and victories. The first story, "The Healer", for instance, plays upon the myth of motherhood that is upheld as the major or sole criterion of womanhood in most cases. It shows how a society that sees barren women as a curse, can end up shoving them into the hands of wicked charlatans who cheat them ruthlessly and drive them insane. The title story also has a woman domesticated and deprived of individual freedom by her typically patriarchal husband despite being educated and capable of making financial contributions to the household. But if these are stories of women's biological pathology and gender vulnerability, then in "Election Fever" we have a story of women's manipulative and conniving powers. The grandmother in this story takes her entire family by surprise when she secretively joins many (opposition)political parties and accepts bribery in the shape of cash and Pakistani rice. She also instills a lesson on flippancy and exploitation that leaders and followers mutually play as part of the political game, in her young granddaughter who accompanies her to party meetings. "Bayam Sellam" however, is the story that presents the traditional strength and entrepreneurship of Camaroonian women in the shape of market women. Descendants of strong willed mothers and grandmothers, these market whizzes possess the solidarity and business acumen required to call up a strike and force the government into declaring a state of emergency. If the women in Makuchi's world are economically and politically aware and active, than her men are by no means lacking behind in this arena. They have their own share of pondering and debating over the postcolonial scramble that Camaroon has become since independence in 1960. Hailing from that part of central Africa which has been thrice colonized (Germans, Britishers and French, all had their share of plunder of this land) and is still struggling to wrench free from the clutches of the neocolonial beast gnawing in the shape of capitalist America, the men in these narratives are often concerned about the grim socio-economic fate that awaits them. "American Lottery" and "The Forest Will Claim You Too" are two such stories which delineate the myriad of home grown as well as imposed problems that jitter the heart of this country. Government corruption in particular, and elitist callousness in general, French aggression and racism, in addition to the economic exploitation by next door neighbors like Nigeria, deforestation or "environmental genocide" by both French and Asians, leading to other social hazards like "timber babies", and loss of ancient herbal medicinal provisions are some of the ailments that contribute towards breaking the backbone of Camaroonian economy, and falsifying its persistent efforts towards modernization. No wonder Makuchi blatantly points at the devaluation of the CFA (the Camaroonian currency) and the escalating inflation scenario to be the root cause behind the brain drain that America is enjoying today. The implicit question that lingers right under the narrative surface seems to be: If the "Third World" youth is often eager to have a way out of this labyrinthian hole and aspires for that alluring land of promises, who is to blame? Nonetheless, it is relieving to find that not all Camaroonian youth are attracted to the West. Peter and his friends in "American Lottery", for instance, are well aware of the dilemmas of identity loss, alienation and frustration that are quick to follow the fate of those who turn their face away from the poverty and confusion of motherland in the hope of totally adopting and assimilating a foreign culture. The same densely packed story depicts local riots, curfews and rebellions to be amongst other things that keep Camaroonians perpetually involved in their country's future. Like her themes, Makuchi's images and metaphors are often drawn from both indigenous and foreign sources. So we have palm and plantain, wrappa and nsaa, juxtaposed with the image of the Marlboro man with his will - o'- the - wisp pose and foreign embassies with their whining twining queue of locals. Her stories, with both rural and urban settings also often break into poetic strings of thought and are embellished with sprinklings of the Beba language, some pidgin, Anglophone as well as Francophone diction. Reading these superb pieces of fiction has definitely been a very enriching experience for me. If you are looking for thought provoking yet lucid, and passionately written fictionalized theory, or theorized fiction, then this is the text for you.

    Book Description

Detective, monk, father, herbalist, Crusader, sailor, Celt, friend—author Ellis Peters bestows all these attributes on her twelfth-century Benedictine monk-detective Brother Cadfael. As a detective, Cadfael uses his analytic mind to solve crimes and administer justice. As a man of God, he also dispenses mercy along with his famous cordials.
Why, essays ask, is a cloistered monk solving murders? How can an author combine a valid detective and an effective healer?

Patrika: I read your book this morning, and it summed-up in 200 short pages what I had to garnish from probably 50 - 60 previously read books on writing and publishing. I enjoyed every page of it. What's more important, is that it answered several questions that I had about current trends in the publishing industry.

Thanks again for being the pioneer "Author's Advocate", it's good to know that someone understands and is willing to help.

      Book Description

Each of the essays in Gifts of the Spirit share Ardath (Ardie) Rodale's vision of where we can find spirituality: in the various, everyday events, responsibilites and moments of joy and sadness that make up our lives. Whether she's writing about alone-time spent on a garden path or the special, poignant meaning a perfectly formed white feather has, Ardie shows us that common ground exists within personal experience.Anyone who has ever marveled at the pure joy of a child's smile, been amazed at how a chance encounter with a stranger can have unexpected meaning, or felt the mysterious power that sharing with others can bring, will find the observations and wisdom in Gifts of the Spirit reaching into their hearts and souls. We will reconnect with the core of spiritual life-- home and family-- and be moved to examine our own life experiences for the sacred lessons they can teach, no matter what our faith may be.

5 out of 5 stars Looking at Africa through many eyes. Complex & interesting!.......1999-07-22

Traditional African powers and imposed western ideas are juxtaposed in this complex and interesting story. If you liked Barbara Kingsolver's "Poisonwood Bible", chances are you will like this book too. In Antonia Saw the Oryx First we meet characters through the eyes of an American doctor who has been in Africa long enough to feel more African than American, yet her perspective is a mixture of both cultures. The characters are complex and very different from each other. Each character seems to represent a different face of Africa - the precolonial, the traditional, the colonized desperate to reclaim his roots, the native-born colonist, and the reincarnated new Africa.

Early in the story, a young woman - Esther - is brought to the doctor's clinic near death from a violent, upsetting episode with a sailor. It took me a while to find the courage to return to the book after that, but the return was worth it. We witness Esther's remarkable rebirth and her gradual transformation to a healer of a more traditional sort. We are thrust(along with the doctor) between the world of traditional African medicine and western medicine, often wondering which really has the greatest power and will prevail in the constantly changing African world. Who belongs in Africa, and who can rightfully find their own place there? The answers will have you thinking a long time!
