If Christian men are going to change from a pitiful, wimpy bunch of "really nice guys" to men who are made in the image of God, they must reexamine their preconceptions about who God is and recover their true "wild" hearts, writes bestselling author John Eldredge in Wild at Heart: Discovering a Life of Passion, Freedom, and Adventure. Eldredge throws down the gauntlet--men are bored; they fear risk, they refuse to pay attention to their deepest desires. He challenges Christian men to return to authentic masculinity without resorting to a "macho man" mentality. Men often seek validation in venues such as work, or in the conquest of women, Eldredge observes. He urges men to take time out and come to grips with the "secret longings" of their hearts. Although the book succeeds best in its slant toward a male audience, it also strives to help women understand the implications of authentic masculinity in their relationships with men. Eldredge frames the book around his outdoor experiences and appealing anecdotes about his family, sprinkling the text with touches of humor and overlying everything with heartfelt passion. Even as he mixes eclectic ideas about masculinity from popular movies such as Braveheart with classic words from Oswald Chambers, and lyrics from the Dixie Chicks with stories from the Bible, he points to only one answer for men searching for their true wildness of heart. Writes Eldredge, "The only way to live in this adventure ... with all its danger and unpredictability and immensely high stakes ... is in an ongoing, intimate relationship with God." --Cindy Crosby

Book Description

God designed men to be dangerous, says John Eldredge. Simply look at the dreams and desires written in the heart of every boy: To be a hero, to be a warrior, to live a life of adventure and risk. Sadly, most men abandon those dreams and desires-aided by a Christianity that feels like nothing more than pressure to be a "nice guy." It is no wonder that many men avoid church, and those who go are often passive and bored to death. In this provocative book, Eldredge gives women a look inside the true heart of a man and gives men permission to be what God designed them to be-dangerous, passionate, alive, and free.

5 out of 5 stars a good book in spite of its flaws.......2007-06-27

This is a good book--even a great one--in spite of its flaws, some of which have been mentioned here.
I will counter the most obvious ones:

+ Type B males are as manly as types As
(This blind spot leads to more flaws like the ones below.)

+ In praising type A manliness, Eldredge comes across as dismissing Mother Teresa

+ He leaves us with the impression that he sanctions violence uncritically, which concerns me

Other than these and a couple of other lesser ones, I still believe that this book is a necessary corrective.
We, the men in this culture, have been domesticated out of noble passions and
thus becoming vulnerable to lesser, trivial and destructive ones.

5 out of 5 stars Both men and women misunderstand men.......2007-06-25

When a man sets out for adventure, whether through hunting, sailing, mountain climbing, dog sledding, or any other traditionally masculine enterprise, the age-old "battle between the sexes" often rears its head. Many women simply don't understand what makes a man tick - and even though men might know what winds their clocks, they often don't know why. The result is that both men and women misunderstand men. Whether you're a man or woman, this book offers insight into why men are the way they are, and assure us all that it's not only good, but necessary.

Eldredge says, "For after years of living in a cage, a lion no longer even believes it is a lion... and a man no longer believes he is a man." The lesson is that men must relearn what it means to be alive and true to their inner selves, including the individual's right relationship to the woman in his life. This book will do some good toward those ends. It will also help the hunter to understand his passion for the hunt and its proper place in his life. It's worth reading, and it's a small price for what it teaches you about yourself.

this book i gave to my daughter to read before givign to her husband to read. it is a great book

4 out of 5 stars One of the few good books for men.......2007-06-22

Most Christian books for men tend to focus on the sensitive side of the male; the caring, compassionate, loving kind. Nothing wrong with that, but we know as men there is something in our souls that long for adventure. That is where "Wild at Heart" shines. You will not be sorry buying this book for yourself, or if you are a wife, buying it for your husband. It has been an "eye opener" for me, to say the least.

Book Description

Would you like to save yourself the indignity, inconvenience and foul taste of modern diet fads? Are you sick and tired of frittering away your money on heart medications that leave you feeling more wretched than ever? Do you spend frequent, precious hours jogging or pounding away at the gym? And despite all of this effort, are you still fatter and weaker than you want to be?

Then it's time to abandon the Modern Gospel of low-fat food and long-duration exercise as a path to heart health. We need the very opposite, says Al Sears, M.D. in The Doctor's Heart Cure. According to Dr. Sears, heart disease continues to be America's biggest killer - and obesity has reached epidemic proportions - because of the fad for low-fat diets and despite aerobics.

Your heart's salvation lies in reengineering the diet and exercise habits of our hunter-gatherer ancestors to fit our modern culture. What does this entail? To build a strong and resilient heart, says Dr. Sears, engage in brief, explosive bouts of intense exercise. Consume a diet rich in high quality fat, pasture-fed meat, free-range dairy, wild-caught fish and liberal helpings of low-glycemic fruits and vegetables. Avoid grain-based starches as best you can. And take appropriate supplements to counteract the nutritional deficiencies of modern produce.

As Director of The Center for Health and Wellness, an integrative medicine and anti-aging clinic in south Florida, Dr. Sears has used this plan to help more than 15,000 patients successfully reverse heart disease, build stronger hearts, manage their weight and abandon their heart medications. In The Doctor's Heart Cure, for the first time, Dr. Sears reveals his entire, proven program, so you too can safely build an impregnable heart.

4 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-06-21

This book talks about some of our more important concerns: our health, our food and our lives. I'm used to read and think about what I read, to compare it with other sources. Dr. Al Sears has made a great job by showing lots of researchs to add to the credibility of his words. I'm slowing modifying my habits, so that I can follow his advices.

5 out of 5 stars PACE yourself.......2007-06-13

I found this book engrossing and what Dr. Sears has to say is very useful and practical. I am trying to use the PACE exercise program with some success although I am uncertain about the fat burning as I sleep. His food diet is just good sense and backed up by many health "authorities", so I think this book from cover to cover is a winner.

3 out of 5 stars A Good Book for Beginners.......2007-05-13

I did not learn anything that I didn't already know from this book. I am, however, one who is involved with continuous nutritional tune-ups and physical fitness. The advice and techniques are similar to those that
body builders already use. As I said in my title, this is a good starter book.

3 out of 5 stars Satisfied.......2007-05-06

The book was very informative. However, with all the health and diet books I have read, they all seem to be similiar in many of the subjects. I just have to siphen out the parts that I believe and try to apply them in my daily life. It was very well written but like all books, you cant agree with everything. I was satisfied but not overwelmed. Thanks.

5 out of 5 stars enlightening drug-free approach to curing heart disease, must read for all brainwashed doctors!.......2007-04-23

This book is such a treasure, that I have ordered several copies of it for friends, relatives and even a few doctors. Out of all of the books that I have read on high cholesterol and heart disease, this is the only book that provides clear, easy-to-understand information on why we have heart disease and how to overcome it without using harmful drugs like statins and beta blockers. I want to thank Dr. Sears for having the courage to stand with the truth against powerful drug companies who have hidden the dangerous side effects of their heart drugs and in so doing have caused serious harm to the health of those who have trusted their doctors and are currently taking these drugs. May the day of reckoning come soon.
Florida is blessed to have such a fine doctor practicing in their State.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource.......2007-01-28

This is the field manual for the book Wild At Heart. Mine is very worn from having been worked through 4 times. This is a great resource if you are working through Wild At Heart, either by yourself or in a group. It will help you really examine and work through the book.

This workbook is well laid out with lots of room for answers, and a number of little sections to help you on your journey as you work through it. Some of these supplemental sections are:
· A Break in the Clouds
· From the Map
· Warning!
· Dispatch
· Getting Your Bearings

Each chapter which parallels the book, begins with a 'Gut Reaction' - what is your first take on that chapter in the book? This helps set the bearings for where you will go in that chapter. As you work through it you will be drawn deeper and deeper into the masculine journey.

Eldredge begins each chapter with quotes that span church history and denominations. He must be one of the most widely read men I have encountered. He draws from that breadth of knowledge to show a variety of views on topics and tries to help you see where God is wanting to work in your life.

The one drawback, if you use it in conjunction with the DVD curriculum, is that the DVD does not follow the book exactly, and with 12 chapters in the book and field manual that follow each other exactly, and 8 in the DVD, it doesn't seem weighted evenly.

The Field Manual is indispensable if you are going to work through the DVDs and is a great supplement to the original book. For you, or other men in your life, this book will be a great tool on your journey to authentic Christian manhood.

5 out of 5 stars Wild at Heart.......2006-03-11

it was a great support of the book, Wild at Heart. It took the book into a deeper level.

5 out of 5 stars A whole new perspective.......2006-01-31

This book answered many questions I have had for years: about myself, about the church; about Christianity. It launched me on a search for these things that has been very enlightening. I highly recommend getting the Field Guide to Wild at Heart which will help make the things in the book a very personal experience.
Pure theolgists and members of churchs that think they have the only way will probably be very upset by this book. For those who want to open their minds and hearts, it is an unforgetable journey.

5 out of 5 stars wild at heart.......2005-10-07

I have not finished this book as I am writing this. I can say the first 40 pages are worth the purchase price. Eldredge really seems to know how a man is to relate to Jesus. Its fairly obvious he enjoys a healthy relationship with our risen savior Jesus--and shows that we all can. Read it......if you dare.

5 out of 5 stars Most Powerful Book Next To the Bible!.......2005-10-04

Wild at Heart is a must read for any man. Especially for the fathers. It is the most powerful book I have read and used next to the Bible. I taught a men's group on the book at a church and now have set up a men's study group at work. Fathers, you owe it to your sons, no matter what their age, to read this book and be honest with yourself.

An unexpected bestseller, this self-help book for women who want to hook a man seems to have struck a chord with desperate American women. Fein and Schneider, whose main credentials seem to be that they are married, lay out the rules to be followed for successfully snagging a dream hunk. And these rules are hard as cast-iron--Rule Five: Don't Call Him and Rarely Return His Calls. The idea is to return to pre-feminist mind games, exploiting the male hunting urge by playing hard to get. The result seems unliberating--Rule Seventeen: Let Him Take the Lead--but it seems to be capturing female minds. Rules Girls are eyeing the phone with steely resolve, and Rules seminars are springing up nationwide. Curious bachelors have been observed studying The Rules, some frowning, others with the supercilious smile of the hunter.

Book Description

Following the success of the New York Times bestseller How to Marry the Man of Your Choice, The Rules is a blunt, effective, controversial, funny, and definitive guide to marrying the man of your dreams. The Rules will be featured on an Oprah show, set to air close to Valentine's Day.

Download Description

You are a creature unlike any other (Rule #1)--that's why you need . . . The Rules. A simple set of dos and don'ts, The Rules will lead you to where you want to be: in a healthy, committed relationship. Unlike today's haphazard dating customs, The Rules recognizes certain facts of life. That men know what they want. That a man is either attracted to you--or not! That men want a challenge, not an instant or easy victory. When you follow these commonsense guidelines, you treat yourself with respect and dignity--and demand that men do likewise. Although they sound old-fashioned ("Don't see him more than once or twice a week"), they encourage you to lead a full, satisfying, busy life--outside of romance. Although they seem tough ("Don't talk to a man first"), they will teach you how to accept occasional defeat and move on. And although they require discipline ("No more than casual kissing on the first date"), they will bring out the best in you and in the men you date. The goal? Marriage, in the shortest time possible, to a man you love, who loves you even more than you love him.

2 out of 5 stars Light and fluffy, just like your pie crust should be.......2007-06-13

I'm male and in my 30's, I've always had an easy time getting attractive woman. I read this book out of curiosity, and a desire to learn what you girls are up to. Not much if you follow this book to close.

This book has some common sense in it, but it is mixed with some downright falsehoods.
They mention "The Rules" start in 1917, but don't mention that almost all woman where skilled homemakers at that time, 18 yr old girls could cook, clean , and raise a baby. This is very attractive to a man who mants marriage, with or without the baby.

Do you want to seem busy, and in demand? Yes. Do you want to avoid having sex to fast? Yes. What you're trying to do is show a man you have value, make him think you don't need him, he needs you more, that message comes through in the book.

The divorce rate is sky high, and the marriage rates are dropping, and I feel sorry for all those woman who believed all that feminist junk, and now are to old to get married and have kids so I'm going to tell it like it is. ALL PEOPLE LOVE GOOD FOOD, including woman.

The writers think they can get a man without actually doing any work, or learning a skill. Just like men should learn to dance if they want a young hot sexy woman, woman should learn to cook. Are any of the woman on the cooking channel single? NO.

I don't think this book is to manipulative, it's all in your presentation. You can cook for a guy without seeming needy, or desperate. ALL PEOPLE LOVE GOOD FOOD. Just present yourself to a guy like this, say" I found Grandma's old secret spaghetti recipe, I'm going to make some delicious organic spaghetti. I can't change the quantities on the recipe because it can be confusing with all the fractions, its hard to cook for only one person. Why don't you get a bottle of wine and come over for a nice FRIENDLY dinner". Make sure he realizes you where going to cook it with, or without him. Believe me if you come through on the dinner like a good potential spouse should then you will appear very desirable, and valueable. You don't have to tell him it's Rachel Rays Grandma. When he's at the drive through the next day he will remember you. When he's at the vending machine he will remember you.

The writers of this book make it seem like a mortal sin if you pay your own way on a date. I know from experience this is wrong. I never had my world rocked more than once this girl whipped out her own movie ticket money and paid her own way. I saw her for the indipendent, confident woman she was, she didn't need me, or my money. The writers even suggest you should appear not to need a man. They even say don't mention marriage first, let him. If you make a guy think all you can be is friends, buy paying your own way and such, he will want to be MORE than friends.

This book has some helpful tips you should use, be safe, be choosy, and it will point you in the right direction. The problem is that once you get past "The Rules", you have nothing. Take it from a guy in his 30's, I know some great girls my age who can't get a man to marry them, time is not on there side now. Better stick to somethig much more time tested than a book based on something from 1917, how about something since the dawn of man like "the way to a mans heart is through his stomach".

No guy worth a darn is going to chase after you for marriage if all you do is act like a jerk. Marriage is a lifelong commitment, these so called writers make it sound like you're training a puppy. Please. Any guy who puts up with this kind of behavior is a looser.

What about a spiritual connection? You either have it, or you don't. No mention of that in this book. Even with a spiritual connection your chances of a successful marriage are 50/50. Once you get past the initial attraction you have to show a man you can be a good partner. Can you run a household? You are talking about MARRIAGE, not an episode of General Hospital.

Guys you need to learn to dance, and cook. Girls you need to learn to cook, and something else I can't mention here. Girls your gonna have to read a book by a hollywood madame to learn the other skill you need to get a man, and keep him.

As usual people want something for nothing.

5 out of 5 stars Grow up you other reviewers.......2007-06-02

I don't think the other reviewers have even read this book. I'm happily married (8 years now and going strong!) with three gorgeous children thanks to The Rules. I dated a ton in high school and was prom queen and Miss Las Vegas (not to brag, seriously, just to point out that I wasn't pig slop). I read The Rules before my freshman year at Harvard and then totally snagged a number of incredible guys at HU before I met and snagged Mr. Right, my husband. My husband was dating two other women and if I had not read The Rules, I could never had drawn attention to myself and got the other women out of the picture. The thing about the Rules that offends people is that it suggests you have to play games. Guess what, if you want someone worth getting, you do. You have to be intelligent, witty and on-top-of-it... and sometimes you have to play games long into a relationship. The Rules is not telling you to be deceitful or dishonest. On the contrary--it tells you to be totally honest, just never desparate. The most wanted women play "The Rules" naturally. Treat yourself as the hottest commodity and love yourself, and that makes you more desireable. The Rules smartly looks at social play and points out nuances the average "dater" might be blind to, and helps you correct your bad habits. It helps women fix the bad habits they may have picked up from their attempts to be "modern" or "feminist". Women who diss this book might want to get over their prejudices against "old fashioned" dating, and glean the gold that is contained in this book.

3 out of 5 stars Young Women.......2007-05-29

If you are a teen who wants to start dating, read this book to get an idea of what you should be prepared for. Dating CAN SOMETIMES be a game and this will give you a little insight into it. As an older young woman I no longer follow the rules but this book got my feet wet.

4 out of 5 stars It's mostly just common sense.......2007-05-10

In my opinion, this book is mostly about learning to appreciate yourself enough that you don't let anyone take you for granted.

Being a people-pleaser stems from low self-esteem and this book give some tips (albeit sometime rather humorous tips) about holding yourself in high regard.

I enjoyed the book and am currently trying out some of the "rules" - we'll see how it goes :-) Maybe "The Rules" will help me change from "Starting Over AGAIN" to "Started Over for the LAST TIME".

4 out of 5 stars Good start for clueless women.......2007-05-09

As a guy, I read this book out of curiosity as a defense against manipulative women and to be honest, once I actually started going through it I must admit...it isn't that bad. I mean, if I review it in the mindset of the target audience, which is women trying to get married to a guy that is crazy about them, I have to say it has some really good tips. I always say that an ugly truth is better than a beautiful, convenient fiction, and the ugly truth is that guys do stay interested longer in those who don't act too eager. Feminists may not want to hear it, but it's true. Reading the book made me recall women who acted the way the book described, and I can honestly say they kept me interested longer.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring, funny, appropriate and real.......2007-06-16

I stumbled upon this book and am so glad I did.

The author has an obvious love and passion for Jesus and a desire to tell others about how to be a godly and virtuous woman. Forget "The Rules" - Read and apply the principals outlined in the book and fall in love with the Savior. In a culture that forces one to immediate gratification, this book will inspire and motivate you to pray for your husband to FIND you ("He who finds a wife finds a good thing") while you are pursuing God's plan for your life. In addition to inspiring single women, this book also encourages married women and provides practical advice to becoming an irresistable wife.

The book is easy to read, humorous, points to Jesus, scripturally based and applicable for today. I like the use of scriptural stories which illustrate not only how to be a godly and faith inspired woman, but how the scriptures are truely timeless and relevant. She also starts each chapter with a prayer - beautiful, powerful and authentic prayer - preparing the heart of the reader to greater faith.

5 out of 5 stars practical, down to earth advice.......2007-05-15

I found this to be a very down to earth book with practical advice. I have begun applying some of Michelle's principles and am finding that they really do work. Recently divorced after 28 years of marriage, I was a little unsure of how to approach dating again. I am now in a new relationship. This handy reference has helped my self assurance and I am using my power much more effectively than I ever would have otherwise. Thanks, Michelle!

Book Description

Courageous Souls explores the premise that we are all eternal souls who plan our lives, including our greatest challenges, prior to birth for purposes of spiritual growth. The book contains ten true stories of people who planned physical illness, having handicapped children, deafness, blindness, drug addiction, alcoholism, losing a loved one, and severe accidents. Because very different life challenges are often planned for similar reasons, readers who have not faced these specific challenges will nevertheless see themselves - and their motivations as a soul - in these stories. As readers come to realize that they themselves planned their lives, suffering that once seemed purposeless becomes imbued with deep meaning. Wisdom may be acquired in a more conscious manner; feelings of anger, guilt, blame, and victimization are replaced by acceptance, forgiveness, peace, and gratitude.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Read.......2007-06-27

If you are wanting to know the age old question of why are we here then this is the book for you. I don't know how many times I have said why did this happen to me. I no longer have to wonder because I now understand it was something I planned all along. I know it may be hard to believe but it really does make things a little easier when life hits you with some hard lessons.

This book is a must read I promise you won't be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars Not a preachy guilt trip book about religion. Thank God........2007-05-28

Excellent all the way. Except Schwartz needs to finish up though. Courageous Souls is the first book that finally goes beyond many of those dopy "beyond the white light" reads. His documented sessions with the subjects in the book are all well done and kept in the context of transcribed fact, rather than Schwarts spewing out opinion after opinion about what it is he's hearing. Its mind blowing stuff. But, the book seems to sort of end abrubtly and you get the sense that he has much more to tell. As an example, maybe it wasn't, but modern day christianity is not addressed. In fact this book almost seems to stay away from the subject except on occasion when the spirit guides make a somewhat translucent reference as to who their big boss is. I like books such as this that don't curse me for what I dont know or believe and this one does not. It does not add yet another translation to anyones bible or book of rules. If Schwartz continues his book as another volume, I hope that we may see yet more comprehensive dialog about how many of todays out of control religious organizations came to be and why they still exist. I know that's walking on eggshells in the commercial book world but he clearly heard more during these sessions than he wrote about. If the material is there, I hope he takes a chance and tells us more, even at the risk of hurting someones feelings about their "god". Courageous Souls takes the term "Human Evoloution" and guides you to an understanding that will help lift the fog on the question of Why we are.

5 out of 5 stars Planning our Lives.......2007-05-20

After reading this book, I have no more questions about how I planned my life. I also gave up blaming anyone for anything. it is completely clear that I requested my best soul friends to participate in my life. Out of their great love for me they agreed to play certains roles for me to support my soul's learning and my soul's evolution.
This book shows there is nothing to forgive as you asked for every situation in your life.
Maybe you only need to forgive yourself for being so hard on yourself.

Robert Schwartz has a clear style. it is easy to read.
This book will change your life....it is a must.

4 out of 5 stars Life's Journey Explained.......2007-04-17

I am not a fan of reincarnation so when I first began reading "Courageous Souls" by author Robert Schwartz I quickly thought this book is not for me. However, as I continued to read and kept an open mind I learned many things that I would have not otherwise known. I also saw many similarities in the life experiences discussed in the book and my own life. As I read each page, I became more engrossed about the various topics such as Pre-birth Planning and Physical Illness. I read the first half of the book non-stop and only put the book down due to an interruption of the telephone ringing. After reading the book, I am still not a believer in reincarnation but I agree with many of the shared beliefs of the author. This book will change the way you think about your life and how your life experiences shape your thoughts and feelings about yourself and the world.

5 out of 5 stars A GREAT Book, I Thoroughlly Enjoyed It.......2007-04-14

I have greatly enjoyed Dr. Newton's work and this book is a great adjunct to it. I liked the format and the fact that Robert Schwartz is not a scientist or someone who was psychic or something from birth. He is an everyday guy and undertook a journey to learn more.

The way he had the different mediums and psychics work with the people in the book and give different perspectives was refreshing! This book was an easy read and a pleasure.

2 out of 5 stars Glad I read this book.......2007-03-21

Glad I read this. I think most men know that most women do this stuff unconsciously. The authors seem to brand all men the same suggesting that these manouvers are guaranteed to work, while not taking into account the men out there who have high standards and high character. Men have a lot more power in attracting women... (hot chick with ugly guy, but never the opposite). Women have looks, hence the need to use this book.

4 out of 5 stars Reading Material.......2007-02-20

This is a book for those of you who don't remember the rules or just want one book for everything. I love it and even bought some for friends of mine and they also love the book.

5 out of 5 stars I am a feminist and I love this book.......2007-02-08

I am a feminist and I love this book. I have read it several times and flipped through it about 100 times. To me this book is more about SELF RESPECT than anything else. Living your life, keeping active, doing good work, helping a cause, etc. are things this book actually encourages. The book puts men in the proper persepctive: they are wonderful additions to our lives, NOT OUR REASON FOR LIVING!

Every woman that I have talked to about this book ends up agreeing with most of it. I too was skeptical about it...until I read it. It's the things your Mother told you...that you didn't want to hear at the time. And after going through one failed "relationship" after another finally decided that maybe Mom was right. Since reading this book I have had no problem securing the kind of relationship that is healthy for me. And for my male friend.

Men that are critical about the book are basically angry that it teaches women self respect and puts a roadblock in their way of getting a woman in bed as fast as possible. I have talked about this book with my male friends and they too agreed with alot of it, and the only one that disagreed has the reputation of being a "playa" amoungst my circle of friends. That alone speaks volumes.

The book is one of the most important books written about dating in the last 10 years and imo is still very relevant. And until the day that MEN decide to change and liberate themselves, it will remain so.

5 out of 5 stars Be very careful what you wish for- you just might get it!!.......2007-01-22

I was torn as to what rating to give this book. I finally decided on giving it a 5 because I asked myself this question: Does this book deliver on it's promises. After over a decade of experiences in both using and NOT using the RULES, the answer is unfortunately or fortunately (depending on your attitude on the subject) a resounding YES!!! Hence I gave it 5 stars. HOWEVER BE FORWARNED-

Over a decade of doing the RULES (and sometimes not) has taught me that the techniques work too well in that you will attract men who don't deserve your attention AS WELL AS men who do. You see, the RULES works because it feeds on the male ego's attraction to competition and "winning". So yes- you will attract more men and get more attention, but this will not only include attention from the great guy who finds you interesting and intriging, it also includes the shmuck who's always up for a challenge and due to a hurt ego or repressed self esteem issues, needs to prove to himself that he can succeed at getting someone who's somewhat unnattainable. The difference is that when the great guy "catches" you he knows he's lucky to have caught you and wants to keep you all to himself. When the shmuck thinks he has caught you however, he feels he has proven to himself that he's cool and therefore no longer needs you. He didn't want you... He wanted what you represented. The winning trophy. Meanwhile all the other girls who were pining for him overtly, but he wouldn't pay any attention to them because after all - they definitely wanted him- end up being saved the trouble of knowing him in the first place. This happened to me a couple of times using the Rules. It actually ended up ok, because once I figured out what they were doing I began using the rules to manipulate them into giving me lots of money. You'd be AMAZED how easily it works just using what this book teaches you. A guy will do ANYTHING to prove to himself he's still got IT!! Even give you everything he has!! Since they didn't have a problem manipulating me into wasting my precious time I had NO problem manipulating them while dating other guys. But that's just me. Is that what YOU want? Probably not. And the truth is that while my anger made me feel justified at the time, I really am not proud of it now. What's interesting is that the techniques in the book are wonderful gifts to the nice guys but end up only mere manipulation devices when used w/ the wrong guys. Only those with plenty of RULES experience would really understand what I mean by that, but basically when you follow the RULES the nice guy (the one you want) is attracted to an 'essance' of you that is coming through loud and clear while you live your life the way you want. Mr. Wrong is only attracted to the mere challenge and to the idea of "winning" you so he actually becomes like a puppet and you all of a sudden find yourself holding the strings while he dances for your approval in the hopes of his false trophy. The book delivers, but a book called "The List" is a good companion for it and in fact a step above it if you're looking to get married.

Why I like this book:

1. Regardless of the critisism the book recieves for being Anti-feminist, it's in reality the most pro-feminist book I've ever encountered.

2. It teaches women not to pay much attention to men. Live your life- only better than before. Take care of your body, Do well in school, Be as happy as you can be, join groups, have fun on the weekends, work for that promotion- Oh, and there are these creatures called 'men' walking around and when you do these things they're going to notice you and want to talk to you and spend time with you.. You can if you want to. If you bought this book you probably do want to, but the point is to go about your day like you don't care whether they call or not. If you do care pretend that you don't, because the truth is, you shouldn't care anyway. After all, don't you have a promotion to go after? If he doesn't call, forget about him cause you have your own thing to do anyway. Someone else will call and then you get to choose whether he's worth your time or not. That ladies, is what this book is REALLY about. Those that think otherwise are too bitter to see it in the right light. And even those that hate it and have TRIED it will tell you it works. The only question is to what cost?

In my experience, The RULES are a great guide for women who want to date. It basically tells you in more detail to give yourself everything you deserve (healthy lifestyle, rich personal and profesional life, etc..) and the men will follow. It tells you not to divulge your life story in the first few dates (good advice. He hasn't EARNED the PRIVILAGE of knowing your personal shi* at that point yet.) And to not be exclusive to any one guy until you have a ring on your finger which is a pretty Pro-feminist idea considering it's pretty much what guys have been doing for centuries...and often even WITH a ring already on their fingers. The book says, that no boyfriend is worth your all your time- only a HUSBAND is. Every other guy is roadkill in your life path just there to help you have a good time. Pretty empowering for women actually. Like I said before though, it works a little too well as the techniques will attract Mr. Right AND some MR. Wrongs that want to know they got the girl that's 'hard to get' and pad themselves on the back for "winning". It's a good buy and it'll keep you busy on Friday nights, but for those of you that are really looking to get a ring on your finger I highly recommend you check out "The List".

4 out of 5 stars Great little resource for women!.......2006-12-29

Good info that used to be taught to women years ago. Not to manipulate, but to save the woman's reputation and feelings if the man was just a player. The Rules works for finding someone with the right intentions. And helps to teach how to move on if the intentions aren't right.

Book Description

Yoga is well known for its power to create a healthy body, but few realize the emotional and spiritual benefits. In The Secret Power of Yoga, world-renowned Yoga expert Nischala Joy Devi interprets Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, the principles at the basis of Yoga practice, from a heart-centered, intuitive, feminine perspective, resulting in the first translation intended for women.

Devi’s simple, elegant, and deeply personal interpretations capture the spirit of each sutra, and her suggested practices offer numerous ways to embrace the spirituality of Yoga throughout your day

5 out of 5 stars Simply joy & understanding!.......2007-05-13

Have not yet finished reading the whole book - so far it has exceeded my expectations in clarity &feminine inturpretation(can't spell!)of what has been a traditonaly male aspect. Highly recommended!!!

5 out of 5 stars Sutras from a feminine perspective.......2007-04-27

Although most of us view yoga as simply a physical discipline, there is a far more spiritual dimension to it. The entire philosophy of yoga has been contained in Patanjali's Yoga Sutras. Sutra is Sanskrit for "thread" - the sutras are a collection of terse aphorisms threaded together, laying out the whole of yoga.

Translations of these sutras have been done by males over the years and although there are some wonderful books on the subject (Iyengar's "Light On the Yoga Sutras" for one), I have found these books to be rather dry. Well known yoga instructor, Nischala Joy Devi has written an entirely new and feminine perspective on these ancient proverbs. Devi writes in an almost poetic manner and substitutes words that are 'negative' with a more heart centered counterpart. For example, for Aparigraha which is often translated as non-greed, Devi uses "awareness of abundance". This is a very nurturing viewpoint that makes the sutras "friendlier" and more easier to relate to. Meditations and practices are sprinkled throughout to help intergrate the vibe of the sutras into your heart.

She covers books one and two of the sutras and did a brief scan of book three. I am somewhat hopeful that she is intending on covering books three and four (she didn't mention book four at all) in a further volume, but until then, this is enough food for thought for now.

Book Description

Reveals the use of direct perception in understanding Nature, medicinal plants, and the healing of human disease

• Explores the techniques used by indigenous and Western peoples to learn directly from the plants themselves, including those of Henry David Thoreau, Goethe, and Masanobu Fukuoka, author of The One Straw Revolution

• Contains leading-edge information on the heart as an organ of perception

All ancient and indigenous peoples insisted their knowledge of plant medicines came from the plants themselves and not through trial-and-error experimentation. Less well known is that many Western peoples made this same assertion. There are, in fact, two modes of cognition available to all human beings--the brain-based linear and the heart-based holistic. The heart-centered mode of perception can be exceptionally accurate and detailed in its information gathering capacities if, as indigenous and ancient peoples asserted, the heart’s ability as an organ of perception is developed.

Author Stephen Harrod Buhner explores this second mode of perception in great detail through the work of numerous remarkable people, from Luther Burbank, who cultivated the majority of food plants we now take for granted, to the great German poet and scientist Goethe and his studies of the metamorphosis of plants. Buhner explores the commonalities among these individuals in their approach to learning from the plant world and outlines the specific steps involved. Readers will gain the tools necessary to gather information directly from the heart of Nature, to directly learn the medicinal uses of plants, to engage in diagnosis of disease, and to understand the soul-making process that such deep connection with the world engenders.

5 out of 5 stars A work of art.......2007-05-14

This book is truly a beautifully written work of art. For those who are ready, it can open doors to a new way of being in the world. It will change much more than how you see nature........it will change your relationship with yourself and the world.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful and Profound.......2007-03-05

This is an intriguing book about our essential connection with the plant kingdom. Herbalists around the world are lamenting the loss of plants that have medicinal properties, some of which have not yet been discovered.

There is a great, and little explored puzzle: virtually every known group of humans has developed sophisticated plant-based medicines and agents for altering states of consciousness. Many are only used in complex mixtures. Too much of one ingredient and not enough of another, and the concoction is either inert or toxic. Yet to have found all these plants and all of their combinations by trial and error would have taken armies or researchers and hundreds of thousands of years. Throughout the world, traditional healers report that they learned about these properties from the plants themselves. They speak of using intuition and the "intelligence of the heart" for the direct perception of nature. Stephen Buhner suggests that this perception comes from the neural network within the physical heart that beats in our chests.

Throughout the book he presents countless examples of people from Thoreau to Luther Burbank and Goethe, who saw deeply into Nature, not through the intellect, but through the heart. He shows us how these people obtained their direct knowledge. It is very clear that Stephen Buhner is not reciting something that he read, but he is telling us about his own direct and deep perception of Nature. He explains how we can all share in this communion with Nature. He goes on to teach us how we, like the shamans of old, can learn the medicinal uses of plants directly from the plants themselves. He also shows us how this opening up to the world of plants can have profound effects upon us.

The fundamental premise is extremely interesting and the second part of the book is excellent. So why "only" four stars? There are two reasons. First, I am not convinced that the connection between living beings can be reduced to electromagnetic fields. The author had some excellent material, but seems almost to lose his nerve, and to try too hard to find a "scientific" explanation for his observations, while not giving enough credence to the evidence suggesting that the web of life is a more subtle underlying property of the Universe.

The second is the style of his writing. He describes the first half of the book as linear and the second half as not. He calls the two halves systole and diastole, to reflect the major cycles of the heart. And he invites the reader to read the book in any order. He tries quite deliberately to move away from a linear, verbal and analytical presentation. Many of the pages are broken up by italicized words or phrases on separate lines and quotations, poems and comments that don't always seem to be in the right place. It may be that he is trying to stir us up and make us think. Or rather to not think: to apply our intuition to his words. But it can make reading a little difficult.

Despite my two quibbles, I hope that this book is widely read for its stories, anecdotes and Buhner's encyclopedic knowledge about plants. It is an interesting but not always an easy read.

5 out of 5 stars for those hungering to travel deeper.......2007-01-16

SECRET TEACHINGS is equisitely written, inspiring and offers new hope for the human species and ultimately for the planet. Buhner's poetic writing is often trance inducing. He superbly describes the territory of the sacred and makes navigation of interspecies communication easily accessible. He lays out the map so all we have to do, is the work. Reading this book, I kept hearing a voice inside saying, "I want this." I knew to what the voice was referring, a life of vastly rich and varied experiences that went far beyond the surface of ordinary daily life. The teachings in this book have become my life guide.

This work is an integration of well documented research on the heart as an organ of perception, writings by those, such as Kabir, Geothe,Thoreau, James Hillman, and others, past and present, who have travelled this way as well as the authors own poetry and life experiences.

SECRET TEACHINGS is a must read for anyone who is intersted in deepening their life experience, who is inclined to go beyond reductionist methods of being in the world and for those who hunger to feel the touch of spirit on their body.

The book is easy to read and easy to skip around in from section to section, following your heart and interests. Buhner lays out in fine detail the process of depth perception; of seeing beyond the surface of things with "the unworn sides of your eyes."

At the end of the book there are several exercises to enhance your awareness of the world while reclaiming the parts of you that have been sequestered away so that with practice, we can once again walk in the world as an integrated 360 degree personality, with joy and sponteneity.

3 out of 5 stars The missing secrets of the plants.......2007-01-09

If I could, I would give the following title to this book: the missing secrets of the plants. The book is beautiful, full of poetry and quotation. But, but and but. You can buy it to reading at the airport, with long lines... If you are, like me, looking for the secret teachings of the plants, feeling the soul of it when you read it, you can not find here.

3 out of 5 stars Overall ok, not consistent, not visionary.......2006-08-17

This is generally a good book to serve as an introduction to the consciousness of working with plants in a sacred manner. However the quality of writing, though well researched, does not inspire. You don't find yourself absorbed in the writing, just reading facts and stories.

There are a few practices buried within the book but they are buried. There should have been seperate areas to emphasize these practices. As an example of the writing style the chapter on healing and death talks about death and how shamans approach it for along time. Then the story about how animals created diseases and how plants offered to help people is relayed. Then the content switches back to the death topic again. The writing shows a general lack of polish and very much lacks telling you how to enter the sacred relationship yourself.

A good book, but did not live up to its potential.

If you are looking for something in this genre with much better writing ability check out Connie Grauds' Jungle Medicine (www.junglemedicine.net). From Connie you will get information that is first hand rooted in the world of shamanism.

Book Description

Every day, 2,600 Americans die of cardiovascular disease -- and despite remarkable interventional and surgical procedures, over 650,000 new heart attacks occur annually. In The Heart Speaks, Dr. Mimi Guarneri reveals groundbreaking new research that the heart is a multilayered, complex organ, possessing intelligence, memory, and decision-making abilities independent from the mind -- and that healing the heart can have more to do with healing the mind and soul than we ever knew.

From childhood in a family riddled with heart disease to a medical career facing the pounding heartbeats of cardiac emergencies, Dr. Guarneri draws us into the intimate moments of life and death, and leads us on a riveting exploration of the heart's many mysteries. Through her compelling memoir we see that it is only by knowing the whole heart -- its mental, emotional, spiritual, and universal aspects -- that we can truly heal.

"WEAVING MEDICAL NARRATIVE AND CUTTING-EDGE SCIENCE, DR. MIMI GUARNERI EXPLORES THE FRONTIERS BEYOND THE PHYSICAL HEART. Every day, 2,600 Americans die of cardiovascular disease -- one person every thirty-three seconds. Ten times more women die of heart disease than breast cancer. Despite remarkable interventional and surgical procedures, over 650,000 new heart attacks occur annually. With groundbreaking new research, Dr. Guarneri skillfully blends the science and drama of the heart's unfolding. She reveals the heart as a multilayered, complex organ and explores the new science that indicates the heart acts as a powerhouse of its own, possessing intelligence, memory, and decision-making abilities that are separate from the mind.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Excellent, but not groundbreaking (see similar ideas in Yogananda's books).......2007-01-10

What an enjoyable read! It's great to see a bona-fide MD come into thinking that is appropriate to the 21st century. Science and forward-thinking practitioners such as Guameri clearly are learning what the Yogi's have known since 1500 BC. I highly recommend this book, but it should be followed by the more profound understanding available from Yogananda or other seer.

I had no idea that this book was going to be more about alternative medicine methods. I had been skeptical before, but I read this book with an open mind, and it really opened my eyes to the medical world.

I am entering college next year, and hopefully medical school four years after that, and this book just gave me a perfect picture of the kind of doctor I can be - one with compassion who actually listens to the patient, rather than one hurrying from patient to patient, angry and bitter.

I recommend this with 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Compassionate Inspiration.......2006-12-12

Not only does this doctor know how to write, she clearly thinks out-of-the-box in terms of illness and patient relationships. Dr. Guarneri blends historical information with current examples in this beautifully written, passionate and inspirational book. I'm sure in another 20 years other doctors will look back on this book and realize what a forward thinker she was. Hopefully medicine will head in this direction, because if it does, everybody wins.

3 out of 5 stars Heart to Heart.......2006-11-11

Interesting to hear a cardiologist incorporate alternative cures. Few physicians treat the whole individual. This book is very clear for the lay person to comprehend.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting.......2006-10-09

I found the book to be very interesting and well-written. It explained a lot of different reasons why people have heart attacks and heart problems. But, I was ultimately disappointed because Dr. Guarnei didn't give any suggestions on how patients could help themselves. Well, yes, certainly one could move to the San Diego area and attend her alternative healing sessions - at $50.00 a pop - and you have to do two to three a week! Not for nothing is the site located in one of the wealtiert communities in the nation - La Jolla. I'm sure a lot of heart patients wish they had an extra $600 a month to learn to breathe. I would have been more empressed if the doctor had included a section of things real, normal people can do.
