There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Provocative, appealing and controversial.......2006-08-02

Fomenko has succeeded to convincingly demonstrate the misconception about what "history" factually is... It is fiction and -like we can read and judge for ourselves- no science. It indeed is "make belief" only. I "discovered" Fomenko while studying the "old" history of Al Andaluz, Spain. Having found too many contradictions in available data, having seen too many forgeries as to pretend the importance of christianity for its decline, I ventured out to find Fomenko, who convinced me that we know little if anything for sure of the epoch before the XI-century. However, the integration of the Arabic-Islamic cultural history into the heavily distorted Western fails... There are some attempts to fit "the budding new religion" (Islam) into Fomenko's scheme, but they are too weak to be taken seriously and too often focussing on Turkey as the region where things started to influence the West, which is untrue at all.
Islam certainly was no "new religion" in the X-century. That the highly cultivated Al Andaluz ruler Mohammed-I could have been "mirrored" down in time into some myth about the "illiterate" founder of Islam itself is highly speculative. Nevertheless, Fomenko convinces me about the processes that were involved in forging a christian history. Intriguing and controversial as his books are, I recommend them as to rethink our current position in time and space and simply verify what was claimed. It is a "good" book, but not for bedtime reading... Mundus vult decipi, the world wants to be cheated. Fomenko's readers will understand why.

Traces of white wine were found in Tutankhamen's tomb however there were no record of white wine in Egypt until the 3rd century AD, 1600 years after the young pharaoh died according to the traditional chronology. http://www.newscientist.com/channel/being-human/mg18925395.400

Winston Churchill thought he was a military genius; others considered him greatly overrated; a few even thought him mad. Almost sixty years after his death at age forty-four in an airplane crash, Orde Wingate remains perhaps the most controversial of all World War II commanders.

        Born into a fundamentalist Christian sect and raised in the Cromwellian tradition of Sword and Bible, Wingate was an odd mixture of religious mystic and idealist, combining an unshakable belief in an Old Testament God with an insatiable interest in music, literature, history, philosophy, and the politics of his day.

        But his overriding and enduring passion was for Zionism, a cause that--although he had no Jewish blood--he embraced when posted to British-ruled Palestine in 1936. There he raised the Special Night Squads, an irregular force that decimated Arab rebel bands and taught a future generation of Israeli generals how to fight.

        In 1941, Wingate led another guerrilla-style force, this time into Italian-occupied Ethiopia, where he was instrumental in restoring Emperor Haile Selassie to his throne. But the campaign that was to bring him world fame was conducted behind enemy lines in Burma, where his Chindits shattered the myth of Japanese invincibility in jungle fighting, giving Allied morale a much-needed boost at a crucial point in World War II.

        Throughout his career, Wingate's unconventionality and disdain for the superiors he dismissed as "military apes" marked him as a difficult if not impossible subordinate. He was that, but also, as this vigorous new study reveals, an inspiring leader.

My mother thought Orde reminded her of Stonewall Jackson of American Civil war fame. There are many similarities between the two, but I think Trevor Royle's book title nails his character right on the head. Both Jackson and Wingate were average military scholars, but brilliant field commanders. They had no equal on the field in terms of battle tactics. Both were deeply religious, both eccentric, though in very different ways. Both were Gideons of the supreme, heavenly order. I am convinced if Stonewall were alive today, he would be an ardent zionist as Orde became when his command led him to palestine in pre-WWII years. Orde's first assignment was in the Sudan where he became fluent in Arabic. His Hebrew which he tried to learn was terrible according to Moshe Dayan. His few days in palestine, however, bore much fruit in that he taught the jews of palestine tactics which would help transform the IDF into the amazing fighting force today and which served them extremely well in the immediate days and years following.

Orde's success in restoring the Ethiopian empire to Haile Selassie was definitely Stonewallian. How he routed the entire Italian fascist force residing in Ethiopia with a small force was little short of miraculous.

I don't think Stonewall was as outspoken as Orde and was a bit surprised at how Orde got by with some of his very strong opinions which he was not afraid to voice. That for me was the biggest contrast between the two.

Most important, I think, about Wingate was what he had accomplished in the jungles of the far east where he died in a tragic aviation accident during WWII.

This book was thoroughly enjoyable, is well written, but I defer to the better judgement of one of my favorite Amazon friends and recommend Royle's book as being most accurate as to Orde's views of the jews and palestine. This book was a good prelude to me, a good introduction into the life and character of this most remarkable of British soldiers, Orde Wingate.

Gifted, Offbeat But Marginal Hero.......2007-04-28

Like Lawrence of Arabia, Orde Wingate is a perennially fascinating figure of the later British Empire and era of World Wars I and II. Unlike Lawrence, Wingate was not a literary artist who immortalized his own career, so we rely on biographies to understand him. This work is thorough if not definitive, using a wide array of sources to describe his military/political adventures in Palestine, Ethiopia, and finally Burma where his long-range penetration strategy was most publicized and most problematic. Such a brilliant, idiosyncratic, forceful figure will always stimulate controversy, and the authors explore the disagreements well enough, though they cannot satisfy all readers. Why marginal? Wingate's and Lawrence's successes---and failures---occurred in peripheral theaters of both World Wars. Scholars debate whether such special operations significantly influenced the outcome of campaigns in Africa, Southwest and Southeast Asia, or primarily served to expand or protect Britain's empire. But major (and costly) sea, air and especially land campaigns were essential to winning world wars; the character of total war in the 20th century effectively marginalized the efforts and the theaters where romantic individualists fought, though they remain dashing, compelling figures. "Fire in the Night" is exciting and deserves 4-5 stars taken on its own terms, but too much attention to special ops ultimately obscures the nature of Allied triumphs. A. Mockler, "Haile Selassie's War" narrates the whole 1935-41 Ethiopian conflict. In "Defeat Into Victory" William Slim recounts his inspiring reconquest of Burma, with specific criticisms but general praise for his difficult subordinate. (Bierman and Smith seem overly hard on Slim in this respect.) J. Nunneley, "Tales from the King's African Rifles" captures well the brutal, unglamorous experience of most Burma veterans.

Like many sources, this book praises wingate without enough
careful examination of his flaws. The book focuses mostly
on three chapters in Wingate's life. It starts with his
service in palestine in 1936.

Driven by religious fanaticism and his contempt for what
he saw as uncivilized peoples (arabs or any non-europeans
really), he attached himself to Zionism and zionist politicians.
In the process he exceeded or ignored his orders, then after
politically compromised himself in open alliance with zionist
groups to a point where he could not possibly serve there.
His great "vision" for the region was for a "sub-empire"
with Zionists serving as a sort of spartan military elite
to subdue and westernize those considered lesser humans. All
as part of some sort of twisted fanatical vision of christianity.

After having been booted out of Palestine, he eventually ended
up in Ethiopia where he again ignored his orders. His goal
this time was to force a royal government on Ethiopia regardless
of what anyone else thought and in spite of serious reservations
on the part of politicians and his superiors. His campaign
was a wonderful "boys adventure" sort of a affair, but in the
end it was army won the campaign. Wingate's great accomplishment
was saddling Ethiopia with an unstable and territorially
aggressive monarchy that eventually collapsed in a bloodbath
in the 1970s.

After, he went into open revolt against the entire leadership
of the army in the area. He openly insulted them and held them
in utter contempt. In his mind, though he had never held
a position of high responsiblity in the army, he saw himself
as being some sort of grand illustrious figure. And when
his campaign of alination, insults and personal attacks failed
to get him recognition, he attempted suicide. Contrary to the
book, his megolmania and self-destructive behavior would indicate
someone with serious problems rather than a great leader.

He was rescued from career oblivion by a friend in India. He
was sent into Burma in 1942 to see what could be done in the
way of irregular warfare. For all his bluster, he did nothing.
And beyond that, while other men were suffering and dying
on the march back to India, Wingate arranged to be flown out.

Back in India, he was given a brigade to test out his theories
with. He whined about what he was given in terms of men. He
only wanted british soldiers. He threw the men into jungle
camps during the monsoon with the idea that by inflicting the
maximum amount of suffering and disease, that british men
who had his opinion been weakened by access to health care
and doctors in britain would be made strong again. When the
casualty rate reached over 50%, he moved the men into regular
housing and they recovered. The book presents the self-serving
fiction that the casulaty rate declined due to weeding out
"bad men" when in reality it only improved because the monsoon
ended and the worst of the camps was abandoned.

Wingate's first mission into Burma served no real purpose. It
was originally to be part of a broader plan, but when the
broader plan was cancelled, wingate demanded that the operation
go ahead anyway as a training exercise. He led the men into
Burma, put a railway out of operation for a few weeks and
then led his men deep into Burma where they accomplished nothing.
Eventually, Wingate executed one of his brilliant strategies
to solve the situation. He broke up his command and effectively
gave the order every man for himself. The force or more
properly what survived of the force returned in small parties
to India.

Once back, Wingate ignored his men in favor of launching a
press and publicity campaign on his achivements. He wrote
a self-serving account of operations and when his commanders
raised objects to it, he arranged for a copy to be given
directly to Churchill and the cabinet. Wingate decided to
bypass the entire army and come under the patronage of
politicians. The politicans heard about the brilliant victory,
but they did not hear about the officer running naked in the
jungle or of the man who believed bringing back flogging was
necessary for real dicipline.

When he returned to India in the fall of 1943, he fell ill
because he had recklessly drank contaminated water in north
africa on the way back. He had been given a blank cheque
for any resources he wanted for operations in Burma.

However, due to a combination of him being out of the country
and ill, his operational role in developing the second chindit
force wasn't very large. Eventually, an plan was thrown
together for operations in 1944. Rather than being an evolution
of his supposed theories, it mostly involved a new idea of
fighting a special operations war with a division-sized formation
operating from large bases in enemy controlled territory.

Wingate died early on during the operation so its impossible to
know what would have been the result if he had lived. However,
the only other time his 1944 strategy was used was by the
French in Vietnam where it led to total disaster.

Wingate has a number of followers. Obviously, Israelis are
greatful for the help he provided in forming what eventually
became their army. There are also those who, like wingate,
who see the british army as a failed institution and somehow
see innovation in the form of a man who cut his own throat,
ran around naked in camp, wanted to bring back flogging and
credited broader access to good health care in civilian life
as being responsible for weakening the british soldier.

A good work on Wingate has to deal with the positive aspects
and the negative ones. Too many draw a one-sided portrait
(including this one) while sweeping the not so nice parts of
the story under the rug.

NOT THE STANDARD WARRIOR GENTLEMAN.......2004-03-18

Having been brought up on stories from my early years about the brave and often forgotten exploits of the Chindits I was very enthused to tuck into this book. Orde Wingate has been the hero of many, not so much because he was a military successful warrior, but because he was wildly unconventional at a time when staid ethics and methods of war were leading to defeats of the western allies on all fronts.

A fierce Old Testament fear and learning of the bible bread in what would now be called a fundementalist christian family, he blended this with [...] eccentricities like, indifference to appearing nude before his collegues and newspapermen, a complete indifference to British Monarchy and the hierarchical class-bound society and way of thinking. An appreciator of new ideas and probably quite to the left of many of his superiors, he had no hestation in punishing and physically striking his recruits (no matter their colour), and could kill the enemy mercilessly, or order large groups knowingly to their death without a blink.

Wingate pioneered unconventional warfare with his notion that large unit groups can function in the rear of the enemy for long periods of time if they were self-sufficient and well trained. He eschewed the entire idea of "special forces" as they are often called nowadays. In the end I do not think that he squared the circle large unit action and special forces --- he wanted both and got really neither. His tactics worked rather well against the Italians (but that was no surprise he realised), but they were problematic against the Japanese. The first operation, "Long Cloth" was an unmitigated disaster, with enough adventures from its many participants to fill an entire library (they still make some of the most heart thumping reads available). The entire operation broke down and became in some cases, every man for himself. Wingate himself giving the order.

His second operation was more problematic. No doubt these operations had significant effect on the enemy and no doubt were very helpful in the taking of Myikyena and Mogang, but I really think that 14th Army would have rolled up the Japanese flank nicely anyway, as they did and win the Battle of Burma with overwhelming firepower and troops as well unmitigated air superiority.

In the end the Japanese in Burma were beaten by traditional large unit engagements.

That is not a defeat of the ideas of Orde Wingate, nor do they negate the incredible bravery of the men who served with him. What it does DO however is to put to rest the idea that Orde Wingate was a purveyor of "Truth" -- his ideas were worthy, but they were not the be-all end-all of jungle combat. His developments were prodigeous and his personal bravery never in doubt. But I think that, like Moses, he got involved too much in fanatical devotion to one idea and was willing to sacrifice a lot for an idea. In the case of Moses, his people --- in the case of Wingate, it was often his own troops.

This books admirably chronicles the multifacted nature of Wingate. It is factual and comes across as neutral as possible, often citing critical sources and those men (also of incredible courage) that did not fall under his spell.

The narrative is tight and WELL EDITED. Unlike your regular 1000 page biography Smith and Beirman are able to deal with the subject adequately in 400 pages with nothing substantive missing. Also there is just enough detail of almost all of his life. The final 150 pages deals with the Burma campaign the authors are very skillful in their use of detail. They include all of the crucial elements necessary of his many campaigns.

I found the book to be a very admirable read. I think that it only deepened the questions I have about Wingate --- was he a daring experimenter or a madman? --- I think that one can add, bitterly-troubled person to the heap of other appelations surrounding this man.

I still ask myself, if this man were my commander would I succumb and become a convert? Would I stand aloof and protest that something is terribly wrong? I do not know, and cannot judge because I was not born at the time these events transpired. I was not a part of this great crusade, the glory they gained or the horrors they endured.

Extraordinary story of a unique person.......2004-02-25

This is actually three wonderful stories in one. Beginning with a short introduction of the `early years' the book quickly opens with Wingate in 1936 Palestine/Zion where is quickly discovers the passion that he will keep for the rest of his life, namely Zionism. Wingate, witnessing the anti-Semitic nature of the British officer corps, gravitates towards the Zionists due to his penchant for sticking out and backing underdog causes. This book tells the riveting story of Wingate's training and arming of the famous `night squads' which became the backbone of the Palmach who eventually led Israel to victory in the 1948 war.

The second story is the story of Wingate in Africa. Exiled to Africa because of his deep connections to the Zionists Wingate once again latches onto a new cause, the 1941 liberation of Ethiopia, which had been the last free African state before the Italians invaded it.

The third story is where Wingate once again shined, namely in Burma leading the Chindits who operated behind enemy lines fighting the Japanese. Once again Wingate's penchant for native causes and brilliant ability to adapt unorthodox fighting techniques helped prepare the way for British victory. Churchill called Wingate a genius and when you read this book you will wholeheartedly agree, this is truly the story of the man who was the `fire in the night' when the world was becoming dark with fascism.

Based on the good reviews from Amazon readers, I was really looking forward to this novel. Unfortunately, it is very long winded and boring. I resorted to skimming the text just to get through with the book.

Deeply satisfying human drama .......2007-02-22

Alan Furst's Night Soldiers, takes us first to 1934 Bulgaria, where 19-year-old Khristo Stoianev witnesses his younger brother being beaten to death by local fascists simply for being a smart-aleck. As a result, Khristo allows himself to be recruited to go to Moscow and train with the NKVD, the Soviet spy service.

Though intelligent and thoughtful, Khristo has almost no real power over his own life. Instead, he is buffeted through the conflicts of his time, serving the Soviet cause in the Spanish Civil War, struggling to find love and dignity in pre-war Paris, and surrendering to the inevitability of fighting the Germans as part of the French Resistance. Finally taking a gamble on the meaning of friendship and his past, he journeys through the heart of eastern Europe to help an old friend and perhaps regain his own humanity.

Night Soldiers is episodic in plot, with each episode in Khristo's life only loosely linked to that which came before. Through no fault of his own, Khristo seldom drives the events of the story, and is instead often the victim of the unseen forces of history. The book's central weakness is that the many people who touch Khristo's life are not nearly as well defined as they should be, robbing the story of some of the emotional impact that it could have had.

Yet Night Soldiers is a superior book. I'm not familiar enough with the period to know whether Furst made any historical boo-boos, but I doubt it. I felt deeply immersed in the real history and geography in each of the many different settings of the novel; I feel that if I traveled the Danube on a tugboat, I would see the shining mountains, river flotsam, and fishing villages at each turn of the river just as Khristo sees them on his final epic journey.

More importantly, Night Soldiers is deeply satisfying as a human drama. The exciting thriller aspects are certainly present, but they're secondary to the re-creation of one man's life emeshed in the great historical forces of the 20th century. Khristo seems real, one small human who finally stops trying to tell the good guys from the bad guys and simply puts it all on the line to be a decent human being.

The panorama of wartime intrigue.......2006-11-25

The first in Alan Furst's series of novels about ordinary people caught up in intrigues and espionage before and during WWII, NIGHT SOLDIERS is one of the longest of these books and often characterized as one of the best. The canvas is truly immense, encompassing village life in Bulgaria, France, and Bessarabia, not to mention Moscow, Seville, Madrid, Paris, New York, Prague, Budapest, and even life along the Danube. At the same time, Furst's command of fine historical and character detail is precise and thorough; it seems literally incredible that he knows so much about so many countries during a time in which he never lived. There are times when the novel becomes as berserk as a Hieronymous Bosch painting, given that there's not much really to tie everything together other than the central character of Khristo Stoiaev, a Bulgarian recruited to spy for the NKVD, the Maquis, and finally the OSS; the early sequences involving Khristo's training in the USSR are a bit dreary, and the final sequence along the Danube does seem to wear on quite a bit. The middle sections of the novel in revolutionary Spain, Paris on the eve of invasion, and the French countryside during the Occupation are absolutely engrossing, however, making the novel as a whole difficult to put down. I recommend this especially for readers interested in what it was like for non-military combatants to survive the second World War.

This is my third Furst novel while it has gotten great reviews from others I don't believe this is the best of the series but still good.

What I greatly enjoy about all of Furst novels set in this time period, just before and during the early days of WWII in Europe, is Furst puts a real human face on the average people of Western Europe, He clearly shows the confushion and denial among both the Western governments and their people as fascism took hold in Europe.

Furst's are worth reading as we debate our own "pre-war" and "early war days" in the first major conflict of the 21st Century.

The story rambles, but so do lives. Khristo's life wanders through the next dozen years in a way that illuminates the shabby dangers of taking up a cause. Khristo is not fired with enthusiasm for anti-fascism or communism; he must step up because he will be killed if he does not.

This tale meanders all over Europe and we get credible looks at real people trying to survive wicked intentions and indifferent fate.

I cannot say it is a fun read, but it persuades and captures.

I never had read historical fiction regarding the civil war before this book. This was such an interesting book, and so full of information. I loved the characters. It was really neat to see how some of the women of the time helped in the war. Men made many sacrifices during this war, but so did the women. You will not be disappointed in this book if you love the civil war era. I accidentally got this one first over the first book in the series (Candle in the Darkness), I liked this one much better.

This book was better than the first one, I enjoyed reading it very much! I really liked how Julia's character developed and Phoebe was such a likeable character. Lynn Austin is a great writer, she really knows how to keep your interest. Highly recommend this book!

An Amazing Book.......2006-06-29

This is the best book I have read in a long time. The two women and their struggles and triumphs are so very interesting. Every page is full of suspense, and I found myself reading faster and faster not being able to wait to read what was next. I recommend this book wholeheartedly to anyone who loves a historical romance, and even to those who don't.

Another Wonderful Civil War Historical Fiction Novel.......2006-06-26

I really enjoyed this novel, much better than the 1st in the series. The book gives an account of 2 women from the North during the Civil War. A nice surprise is that the author pulled in a few characters from the 1st novel (Candle in the Darkness) and Julia Hoffman (Caroline's cousin who was the main character from the 1st book in the series) is one of the main characters. Phoebe is a new character introduced.

Although Julia is initially a shallow, spoiled, self-absorbed young woman whose mission is to get married she matures into one with character, depth, and conviction. Her ultimate desire to do what God calls her to do. It was interesting to see the hypocrisy revealed in Nathaniel Greene's character and the discovery of Dr. James McGrath's true character.

Phoebe is an endearing character who disguises herself as a male soldier. She has a great one liners and it's easy to imagine her southern West Virginia drawl as she says them. Her relationship with Ted is so endearing.

Although Julia and Phoebe's characters are developed separately in the first half of the book they are drawn together the second half. I liked the ending. I wish this author would do a follow-up summary that tells one how the lives of the characters ultimately end up, like Francine Rivers does in her books. Other than that this is another good historical fiction novel.

This collection of letters was both colorful in its words and in its pictures. Whether children are asking our soldiers to please come home safe, what guns they use in Iraq, or telling them about the pets they have in their homes, these children are all very aware of what is going on in Iraq; they know they are there fighting for our freedom and risking their necks to do it.

As you turn the pages, taking a look into each child's perception of the war, and learning what questions they desire to ask of our soldiers, you'll notice you have an array of emotions. Laughter is not a stranger as you read through these letters, especially when you read something like "how do you take a bath?" or "I have lots of friends here. Some are tall like a house, and some are short, but I like them anyways." Other times you feel your heart wrench at how considerate some of the letters are; "Try not to get hurt, ok? One thing the earth doesn't need is more hurt people." Or "You make me confident in everything. You make me feel safe in what I do." Statements like these are raw and real emotions that children are pouring out in their letters to these men and women in Iraq.

It is so inspiring in reading about the concerns children can possess for people they don't even know, as well as the innocence of a child when they ask the most simple of questions because they are truly interested in what type of food these men and women like to eat, and where they live, and what they do in their spare time when they are not being soldiers.

I found myself laughing on one letter, and crying on the next. Not only is this book a compilation of letters to our soldiers, I believe it is also a small piece of the positive side of life; an inside scoop into a child's creative mind as it spills over onto the letters with which they write; "I hope this letter from me will make you feel at home. I hope this letter will make you feel a little less scared. ...Whoever gets this letter, please don't die. If you do die with my letter so that will let the world know that I care for each and every one of you out there in the war."

I think Tim, says it best in his letter when he says "if you get hurt, make sure you get to a doctor!"

A warm tribute filled with children's sincerity.......2007-06-05

While volunteering to assemble care packages for our troops serving in Operations Enduring and Iraqi Freedom, Barbara Warfield Baldwin and her daughters came across heartfelt and compelling letters to the troops from local children that served to brighten the Baldwins' days. Dear Soldier is the compilation of many of these letters and pictures.

Meant to uplift the troops' spirits as well as boost the morale of the general public, Dear Soldier will have you reading out loud to whomever is in the room. The honesty and sincerity of kids is great. With phrases like "I hope that yall find that Osama Bin ladin," and "My brother says that he wants to be in the war. I'm thinking I might join him," you can see why these letters mean so much to our troops. And with lines like, "you might think I'm stupid but I made it to forth grade so I make A's and B's, so there," you can't help but laugh and share.

These letters and drawings are photocopied so you don't only get to read them, but see the handwriting and erase marks. Seeing what is important to the children as they were writing is precious. My primary criticism is that for some reason a couple of letters were repeated in the compilation. But don't let that sway you.

I saw this book in the store, read part of it...and cried..lol. This is one of the most precious things I have ever seen! As an Army wife, and a soon to be teacher, I got this book to use at home and in the classroom. AMAZING!

This is such a wonderful book and as vet of Viet Nam War I really appreciate the authors for doing this book. Whether we support the war or not we need to make sure the veterans aren't treated awful like many from my generation were. These are brave men and women who are at war to help keep our country free. I personally do support the war and President Bush's efforts to defeat the terroists. I have been involved helping veterans over 30 years.

Wonderful trilogy of Regency novellas.......2007-03-08

Mistletoe Kisses is a delightful read. It includes three outstanding tales from Elizabeth Rolls, Deborah Hale and Diane Gaston, all of which I heartily recommend. These tales provided wonderful characters, enjoyable plots and heartwarming endings. This book is a definite keeper, to be read not only at Christmas, but the whole year through.

Dominic James Martindale has come home from the war with some disfiguring injuries. Before he left, his betrothed, Lady Hermione Lancelyn-Greene, broke off their engagement but now that he has returned she seems to have set her sights on him again. Recently though, Dominic is becoming more aware of his quiet second cousin Miss Philippa Wintercombe.

In A Soldier's Tale Pippa is endearingly lovely, and Dominic is strong and handsome. This is a very romantic and heartwarming story; I wanted to read it again as soon as I finished it!

A Winter Night's Tale by Deborah Hale

Christabel Wilton is struggling to keep her and her son Nicholas warm one December night when Jonathan Frost appears at her doorstep. Christabel is shocked to see Frost after so many years. Frost doesn't intend to stay long, considering what Christabel did to him years ago, but when she nearly faints from fever, he ends up taking her and Nicholas to his home. Frost's intention is to care for her until she can leave but the more time he spends with Christabel the less he wants her to leave.

A Winter Night's Tale is a tender story about rediscovering love. Frost is a wonderful man and Christabel is both strong and sweet. Frost's aunt suffers from an odd illness, but A Winter Night's Tale is still a charming story.

A Twelfth Night Tale by Diane Gaston

Elizabeth Arrington is desperate to find a room for her herself and the young and very pregnant Annie. When they are turned down at an inn, Elizabeth heads to Bolting House. Elizabeth prays the Earl remembers her and that Zachary is not there.

Zachary has had too much to drink, so when he answers the door and sees two cloaked women standing there he slams the door on them. When a stable worker informs Zachary that there are screams coming from the stables, Zachary soon realizes his mistake.

Elizabeth and Zachary are slowly getting reacquainted but another woman wants Zach. Elizabeth will have to trust Zach if they are to have any future together.

A Twelfth Night Tale is a romantic story about rekindling lost love. Zach and Elizabeth are clearly made for each other. The sparks that fly between them whenever they are near each other is proof enough. With its touching ending A Twelfth Night Tale is a lovely, heartwarming story.

The spirit of Christmas is blended with three tender romances in Mistletoe Kisses. This lovely anthology will warm your heart and have you believing in the magic of love.

Fabulous Trio of Unforgettable Stories.......2006-11-27

A Soldier's Tale by Elizabeth Rolls - Dominic, Viscount Alderley had put off going home as long as he could. He wasn't ready to face his family with the consequences of his injuries received at Waterloo. Wallowing in self-pity his cousin and heir Reverend Alex Martindale had come to escort him home to participate in the holiday celebrations. He wasn't terribly surprised by the shocked and stunned silences his sudden appearance made, but what shocked him more was to see his little cousin Pippa all grown up and looking lovelier and more desirable than he'd ever noticed before.

*** This was a very touching and well written story that should bring a smile and a slight mist to most eyes. I loved the characters of both Pippa and Dominic who were both developed beautifully with enough complexity to make them very appealing and endearing. *** Ms. Rolls is a new author for me and whose writing style is very impressive. I will definitely be looking to research this author's back list!

A Winter's Night Tale by Deborah Hale - Six years earlier Christabel was a foolish young girl who jilted her staid and dull fiancé Jonathan Frost to elope with the dashing Major Wilton. It was an ill thought plan but gave her the one joy in her now widowed and bleak existence, her son Christopher. Hearing of her reduced circumstances, Jonathan came to pay a call and found her extremely ill but as lovely as he remembered. Bundling her up Jonathan brought Christabel and her son to his home at Candlewood to recuperate. Later Jonathan would extend his hospitality to include the Christmas holidays. It was an opportunity for Christable to see Jonathan through more mature eyes and for both to secretly hope the magic of Christmas time would grant them a second chance at love.

*** This was a terrific story that encompassed all the elements of warmth and magic one expects to find during the magical Christmas season. Jonathan was fashioned as more than just a handsome man but one with charm, warmth and honor that the author did an amazing job in creating. Jonathan's loving guardianship and tolerance of caring for his aunt Fanny was beautifully described and added a magnificent layer of compassion to his character that I found to be immensely attractive. It demonstrated for Christabel, more than any of his other kindnesses, what a terrific human being he was. How could anyone NOT fall in love with Jonathan - I know I certainly did! Beautifully done this is an emotional story that will leave you all warm and fuzzy!

A Twelfth Night Tale by Diane Gaston - Elizabeth Arrington and Anna, her pregnant charge were desperately trying to reach her parents by Christmas but along the way the stormy weather hampered their progress and to their dismay, there was `no room in the inn'. Knowing she had to find shelter and remembering that the Earl of Bolton's estate was less than three miles away, Elizabeth borrowed a horse hoping they could expect to find hospitality there and help for both Anna and herself. Elizabeth was stunned when the person who greeted them was none other than Zachery the boy, now grown up whom she'd loved and who had abandoned her ten years before. Seeing him brought back memories of a different Twelfth Night that had forever changed her life. Would they now have a second chance at happiness that each had thought lost forever?

*** Diane Gaston is an author that writes from the heart and in this example it certainly proves that point. Zachary and Elizabeth were beautifully characterized with human emotion and passion making them heart wrenchingly real. The reader is pulled into the story and will experience the anguish of their misgivings and misunderstandings by the pure eloquence of writing that this award winning author is noted for.

This entire trio of Christmas stories is a splendid collection of stories that lovers of the Regency genre should gift to themselves and special friends.

What a Diversion!.......2006-11-01

Christmas is the time of year when the days are (sigh) a bit overwhelming and dreadfully hurried. So what's the remedy? Grab a cup of cocoa, drag the lazy-boy chair by the fire, and drift away to wintry Regency England with MISTLETOE KISSES. This seasonal anthology is a great diversion, for all three stories are romantic, touching, and wonderfully joyful.

Book 1 -
"A Soldier's Tale" by Elizabeth Rolls -
He could no longer avoid the inevitability. Dominic Martindale had to go home. His older brother was dead and he was the new Viscount Alderley. It was time to claim the title, start the duties, and show his family the ruthlessness of war. Certainly, his appearance would shock them . . . save for Pippa. Little sensible Pippa was she still at Alderley Hall? If she were, a tiny ray of sunlight would remain in his heart.

Elizabeth Rolls delivers a seasonal winner. A SOLDIER'S TALE is a lovely story filled with the warmth, the magic, and the happily-ever-afters every Christmas story needs. Truly, I must hunt down more from this author!

"A Winter Night's Tale" by Deborah Hale -
Six years ago, Christabel was an utterly foolish young woman! She had chosen another man over the steadfast Jonathan Frost! Now, the shadows of Christmas loomed, for Christabel and her young son did not have much to celebrate. Then Jonathan Frost knocked on her cottage door and a slim flicker of hope took form. Or was Christabel being foolish again . . . was there more to Jonathan's concern than simple generosity?

A WINTER NIGHT'S TALE is very sweet and very romantic. The heroine's regret was palpable, the hero's forgiveness was acceptable, and the secondary characters were "capital." Deborah Hale creates two very likeable characters in Jonathan and Christabel and this reader cheered for their continual happiness.

Book 3 -
"A Twelfth Night Tale" by Diane Gaston -
After ten years, Elizabeth Arrington still strived to put Captain Zachary Weston out of her heart. Yet, fate intervened. A second chance is a rare and priceless gift and this time Zachary vowed he would not fail Elizabeth. This time he would be worthy . . . yet could he earn Elizabeth's respect and love?

Her fantastic "The Mysterious Miss M" placed me in Diana Gaston's corner some time ago. In A TWELFTH NIGHT TALE Ms. Gaston grants two lovers a second chance. And although, overheard conversations and misinterpreted situations created the notorious "misunderstanding," the criticism remains minor.

Christmas came early!.......2006-10-19

And I'm so glad it did! In other anthologies I've read, at least one story was weak, but not this one! They are all delightful and worth rereading over and over again.

I wanted it first for Diane Gaston's story, since I discovered her writing earlier this year and have collected all her books. Now I've added two new authors to my favorites list!

A Soldier's Tale is filled with wonderful characters of depth and personality. There were some enchanting twists and turns. I reread it again as soon as I finished it.

A Winter Night's Tale's exploration of second chances and the difficulty of being a caretaker is enchanting and heartwarming. What a delight.

A Twelfth Night Tale was the perfect ending to the trio. The pain of regrets and misunderstandings is so gently explored. The courage to accept the future and face the past and still have hope is magical.

AWESOME book. My husband is currently serving in Iraq and it was a very difficult Christmas for all of us. I bought multiple copies of the book. I kept one for myself, each of my children have one and I sent 2 copies to Iraq for my husband to share with his fellow soldiers. We all loved the book. I read it to my 12 and 13 year old children on Cristmas Eve before they went to bed and it helped bring us together. My husband was a little like SGT McClaus for his section. thank you for once again putting out another wonderful book.

One Christmas eve in the desert a group of homesick soldiers are visited by the Santa of Soldiers, and in a fine realistic rhyme inspired by the classic 'Night Before Christmas' comes a soldier's observation of this wonder, which will intrigue and comfort military families separated by war. There's a decidedly different holiday atmosphere here: "When what to my thrill and relief should appear, but one of our Blackhawks to give the all clear: more rattles and rumbles! I heard a deep while, then up drove eight Humvees, a jeep close behind...each vehicle painted a bright Christmas green with more lights and gold tinsel than I'd ever seen."

I was given this book as a gift for my daughter and we just LOVE it!! She calls it her "Papi" book. My husband is currently deployed for the second time to Iraq, and this time our 3 year old realizes he is gone, so with this book it gives her a different insite about what Christmas is for him and that Santa wont forget him while he is there!! I have reccomended this to all of my friends that are in the military with kids and I even have it up on our Family Readiness Group website so everyone can find out about it!!!

'The real French Resistance'.......2003-12-02

This is an excellant written acciunt of the French Resistance during World War II. The author argues very well that the French Resistance that we have heard and know is not correct. The Resistance did not really start until the D-Day invasion, 6 June 1944; and when it did begin, there was a power struggle between the Marquis (Communist) and the Resistance (Allied). To have a better understanding of the French Resistance, this book must be read.
