5 out of 5 stars Trieu, Steven and Jang Yi's review.......2007-05-18

Just a Dream is a wonderful book because it teaches a lesson and the lesson is to take care of the earth by recycling your trash. You should read this book to learn why it's important to protect the environment. Even one person can make a difference. If I could pick from any book that I already read, I would pick this book as the best one. The author had an awesome idea for writing. He taught a lesson but put it in words that made me want to keep reading. It has colorful pictures that really stand out. I would recommend this book to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars Just a Dream.......2007-02-09

I read Just A Dream I would recommend this book because it has detailed pictures. In the book I saw the different sized boats with great reflections in the water. This helped convince me that it was a good book.

3 out of 5 stars I love Chris VanAllsburg.......2006-08-20

This book has a great message, but it seems a little more forced than some of his other titles. All of his books are great for teaching children to infer meaning from text!

5 out of 5 stars An educational, magical children's book.......2006-02-22

When I read this book a tear came to my eye. I knew Chris Van Allsburg was right about recycling and keeping the earth clean. If there are parents that have kids that actually like to keep the earth clean, I suggest they read it to their kids!

1 out of 5 stars Not consitent with the morals I want to pass to my children..........2006-01-16

This book is a pretty extreme children's story that follows the new religion of environmentalism. Very anti-technology and anti- progress... no lawn mowers, no electric dryers? We received this as a gift and I will not be keeping it. I wouldn't read this book to my children.

5 out of 5 stars A needed wake up call .......2007-06-22

This book sat on my shelf for six years before I finally picked it up. I am sorry I waited so long. I could have avoided some heartache and the mistakes I made that caused them.

"Tender Warrior" is a biblical examination of what makes a man. Using scripture, experience, and anecdotes from his own life and the lives of other men Weber uncovers some truths that have been lost to men in our society over the past few decades. He paints in broad bushstrokes that may startle and rub some the wrong way, but keep reading. You will find valuable insights straight from the pages of the bible that will challenge you to look again at yourself and reevaluate how you are doing as a man. At the end of each chapter are reflection questions for individual and group study.

There is something for all men in this book, so read it whether you are married, single, nearing the end of your journey, or just starting out.

I think I will read this book again and find some men to read it with so we can hone each other into the men that God wants us to be.

5 out of 5 stars Listen up guys!.......2006-12-17

I am knee-deep into reading this wonderful book. Men, Stu Weber is the kind of guy we all like to drink a brewskie with. And when a guy like that, a guy you respect, spends some time slapping you around and helping you "get-in-line", well... you listen. So, I'm reading and I'm learning. Plain & simple, this book has helped me to become a better man.

5 out of 5 stars Oustanding! .......2004-12-15

This book should be mandatory reading to every Christian male. It should be given to every young man so that he starts off his walk right. One of the best books I've ever read. Ever since I first read this book, I've given and continue to give copies to every one who I think might read it. If you can, also try to order his other books. I especially like Spirit Warriors. Do yourself, your family, and your community a favor and order Stu Weber's books.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book on being a Christian father and husband.......2004-08-21

This is an excellent and inspiring book for all men who want to be what God has called them to be. I think most men know that we're not living up to all that we could or should be, but so many of us don't know what to do about it. We're not being "real men." So many of us didn't have good role models in our own fathers, and this book can help fill in the gaps. For example, I use this book when working with young men whose wives or (more often) girlfriends are pregnant at the Crisis Pregnancy Center where my wife and I volunteer.

Now, for those of you who may be thinking "Oh no, not another 'get naked and beat tribal drums' book," Weber discusses several of the "drum beating" types of books, fairly discussing their positive points but concluding that they fall way short of where they need to in their search for authentic manhood. To find what men are made to be, you have to go back to the Author himself: past one man's personal insights into himself, past ancient tribal customs, past the "old stories": to the original Author Himself. This is a very Biblically-based book, and Weber makes no apologies for that.

Weber divides manhood into four divisions, which he calls King, Warrior, Mentor, and Friend. This general theme is discussed in some other books on manhood (as Weber admits) but not as Biblically as Weber does it. For example, another book calls them "blueprints" of a man: Weber says he prefers to think of them as "fingerprints" of the man's Creator.

But Weber doesn't hang his entire book on these four (rather arbitrary) divisions. Weber then finds a common thread throughout all of them: Initiative. I think this idea of Initiative being the core of manhood was one of the most insightful single contributions Weber makes. To quote: "Just as a compass without a needle is not a compass, a man without Initiative is not a man." Perfect.

He also very clearly shows how Initiative is not equal to being Bossy. Taking Initiative means taking initiative in helping out around the house, in saying you're sorry, in asking your wife's help, in asking "what do my wife and kids need right now that I can help with?" It's about as far from bossy or (in the tiresome language of critics) "50's Ozzie and Harriet" as you can get.

Most of the rest of the book is spent working out how the four divisions of manhood and the central thread of Initiative applies to various situations and people in a man's life. The chapter "Does Anyone Here Speak 'Woman'?" is worth the price of the book.

I only have two very tiny negative comments about the book. First, the war-time metaphors and examples from Weber's own life as an Army Ranger won't appeal to everybody. For myself, I enjoyed reading them and they helped, but found it difficult to relate in a few cases because I my background isn't the same. One can't fault Weber that much, though: he simply wrote as who he is.

Second, I think this book would be best with an older, more mature man alongside a younger one. (I am working with two younger men right now.) It might not impact a young man as strongly if given to him if he is not able to have an older (or at least same maturity level) man come alongside him. The obvious solution: be that older man. Don't just give it to your kids: work through it with them, and encourage them to work with their friends.

I also bought the audio version of this book. I have two negative comments about the audio version. First, it's only available on cassette. I wanted to give somebody a copy of it, but he can only play CDs, so I had to buy it on cassette, rip it, and burn to CD. (Yes, I did this all legally.) That was a drag, and the resulting quality is rather low. Second, the audio version is not only shorter, but actually combines two chapters from the book (9 and 10). This makes it hard to track against the book. However, it is still a positive for those who are auditory learners and have more time to listen than to read. As most men probably fall into this category, I hope the publisher will consider bringing the audio version out on CD.

In summary: get this book, read it, highlight it, re-read it, work through it with your friends. And watch God turn you into the man you know you were created to be.

5 out of 5 stars The Essence of a True Man.......2003-06-23

This book has been a very inspirational tool and a guiding light for how I strive to live as a man of Christ. Drawn from the Word, Stu Weber writes about manhood. Not the manhood under attack today on TV and in the media, but the real Godly truth. He proves and speaks of the responsibility given to man by God, and all the roles that we play while upon the earth. You will have goosebumps from cover to cover and in the end, you will challenge yourself to be the man you know you are meant to be. Tender Warrior will become a cornerstone in you Christian library.

    Setting: Contemporary Orlando, Florida
    Sensuality: 8

Never comfortable with her fame as an empath, lovely Marlie Keen has led a life free of clairvoyant incidents for several years. But her quiet, ordinary existence is shattered when the unwanted ability to read a murderer's mind returns with a vengeance. Knowing that publicity is sure to follow, Marlie nevertheless tells the police what she knows. Tough detective Dane Hollister first scoffs at her claim that she "sees" the serial killer who's terrorizing Orlando, but it doesn't take long to convince him that she's telling the truth. It takes even less time for him to recognize the attraction between himself and Marlie, but Marlie is incredibly vulnerable to the visions assaulting her and Dane must put his fierce desire on hold while he tries to track down a bloodthirsty madman.

A perfect example of why Linda Howard is a leading author of romantic suspense, Dream Man offers a plot that unfolds with precision, suspense that is taut and spine tingling, passion hot enough to peel paint, and breathtaking romance. This is Howard in top form. --Lois Faye Dyer

    Book Description

Had she finally met the man she longed for...or was she dreaming?

Marlie Keen was trying to lead a quiet, ordinary life. She thought the knowing -- the clairvoyance that allowed her to witness crimes as they happened -- had been destroyed in the nightmare of her past. Then one night it returned with a vengeance, and she desperately needed to find someone to make it stop.

Detective Dane Hollister of the Orlando police department had never met anyone like Marlie. He had doubts about her clairvoyance, but there was no doubt how much he desired her. Her soft, sweet scent set his blood afire, and he wanted to wrap her in his arms and chase the sadness from her eyes. To Marlie, Dane was all heat and hard muscle, and he made her body come alive as it never had before. But not even she could foresee where their passion would lead: a hungry quest for the elusive, dreamy ecstasies of love...and a dangerous journey into the twisted mind of a madman who would threaten their happiness and their lives....

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Another enjoyable read by Linda Howard.......2006-09-01

I found the book truly fascinating with the interwoven mind bending connect the heroine had with the murderer. The female character envoked sympathy and respect for her courage facing the police, the notoriety, the invasion of her mind with the horrible murders.
I always enjoy a Howard read as her plots do twist and turn and her characters and plots make for fun late night reading.

    5 out of 5 stars Super hot!.......2006-08-07

Linda Howard created some really hot characters with amazing chemistry and a gripping storyline. I was totally impressed with Dane Hollister since the author proved that you don't have to create a stereotypical guy who is super rich or charming to be hot! Marlie was totally suited to Dane and provoked the right amount possessiveness from him. All in all, I would recommend this book as a good entertainer with some sweet romance on the side.

3 out of 5 stars Not one of Howard's best, but not bad........2006-07-05

Dream Man was a pretty decent book. Nothing outstanding or worthy of tons of praise, but a decent read anyway. It was typical serial killer / romance book.

That 'typical' is one of the negatives about things about the book. It was entirely typical. The plot is basically that there's a guy who hates woman and wants to punish them so he goes off and kills them. That's all. It was rather unoriginal. I don't mind serial killer books, but I like a little more creativity in the storyline, something to keep it from sounding like all the other romances with a serial-killers. The psychic detail is nice, but again, not all that original. There just weren't any twists or turns in this story to give it that extra push.

Another thing that bugged me was that Howard revealed the identity of the antagonist very early. You go through most of the book knowing who the person is, what their motives are, etc. There's not surprise at all. It took some of the suspense out of the story when you knew exactly what the bad guy was doing or planned to do.

In the romance department, the book was pretty good. Both main characters are interesting. I wanted a little more background on Marlie...more about how she dealt with her strange life and what not. She had a strange childhood and Howard essentially skims over it. As for Dane and Marlie, They have a fairly nice chemistry. They made a good couple, but not a fabulous one. Dane was a little too pushy for my likes, but I did like how he tried to help Marlie over her fears and was there for her in the aftermath of her visions.

Overall, it was just a decent book, like I said. The ending annoyed me a bit. It was a little rushed, and when all was said and done, I felt like there were issues left open, that there wasn't enough closure to the story and things that had happened. I wanted just a little bit about how Marlie dealt with losing her job, and how she was dealing with the press knowing of her involvement in the case. I basically wanted a little more of the aftermath. Oh, and the epilogue was rather strange. But anyway, though I have complaints, the book wasn't a bad read. I didn't have any trouble getting through it. Though I have to say that compared to some other Howard books I've read, this one is really subpar.

    Rating: 3.5 / 5

    4 out of 5 stars A good time killer.......2006-07-01

Linda Howard never disappoints and she definitely kept her track record with this book.

Fast paced and never quite what you expect the characters keep you on the seat of your chair nearly through out the book. Dane as the "I gotta save the day no matter what the cost" makes you want to choke him from time to time but over all he's a strong lead. His partner stole the show from his several times and I'd really, really like to see his story.

    5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Great!.......2006-03-03

I have always been a big fan of Linda Howard and this book just cemented my belief in her. The two main characters were so commanding in their own way. Dane with his rough, cynical, and tough ways and Marlie with her compassion, strength, and abilities. Dane, as a character was overwhelming but found an equal match in Marlie. The things that she has seen and done have given her the courage to never back down from anything. In my opinion, these two characters were one of the most perfect combinations. I certainly was hooked on them and read the book in one sitting!

    Book Description

Known in his lifetime primarily to readers of science fiction, Philip K. Dick (1928-82) is now seen as a uniquely visionary figure, a writer who, in editor Jonathan Lethem's words, "wielded a sardonic yet heartbroken acuity about the plight of being alive in the twentieth century, one that makes him a lonely hero to the readers who cherish him." Posing the questions "What is human?" and "What is real?" in a multitude of fascinating ways, Dick produced works-fantastic and weird yet developed with precise logic, marked by wild humor and soaring flights of religious speculation-that are startlingly prescient imaginative responses to 21st-century quandaries.

This Library of America volume brings together four of Dick's most original novels. The Man in the High Castle (1962), which won the Hugo Award, describes an alternate world in which Japan and Germany have won World War II and America is divided into separate occupation zones. The dizzying The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch (1965) posits a future in which competing hallucinogens proffer different brands of virtual reality. Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? (1968), about a bounty hunter in search of escaped androids in a postapocalyptic future, was the basis for the movie Blade Runner. Ubik (1969), with its future world of psychic espionage agents and cryogenically frozen patients inhabiting an illusory "half-life," pursues Dick's theme of simulated realities and false perceptions to ever more disturbing conclusions. As with most of Dick's novels, no plot summary can suggest the mesmerizing and constantly surprising texture of these astonishing books.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Definitive PKD.......2007-06-08

In the 1960s, when he wrote these four novels, Philip K. Dick was not known, as he is today, as an acclaimed "literary" science-fiction writer and visionary who inspired many films. Since his death in 1982, his reputation has steadily soared, a little bit too late, and now this former genre journeyman toiling in obscurity has become the first sf author to be enshrined in a handsome omnibus volume in the esteemed Library of America series. Of course, I had to buy it even though I already owned multiple copies of all these novels. It is a genuine pleasure to read any of the LOA volumes, so lovingly produced they are. And this one especially so, compiled as it was by an author heavily influenced by Dick, Jonathan Lethem. You will never see a biographical chronology so interesting to read in its own right: we even learn that Timothy Leary called Dick during John and Yoko's bed-in and he put the famous pair on the phone to tell PKD that they wanted to film one of the four novels contained here, The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch. Incidentally, Lethem's taste is impeccable. Though Dick wrote no fewer than 21 novels in the 1960s (plus a couple of dozen more before and after), these are without a doubt the four best: The Three Stigmata, The Man in the High Castle, Ubik, and Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? One could easily compile another such volume with four more extremely strong novels of this period: Clans of the Alphane Moon, Dr. Bloodmoney, Now Wait for Last Year, and Martian Time-Slip. However, the ones collected here are the ones I would pick, if I could have only four. They are all absolute classics and support many rereadings. I remember when in the 1970s, I encountered Three Stigmata for the first time and could not totally make sense of it, but I was intrigued. It was hallucinogenic, it was trippy, it was theological. A few years later I found myself seeking it out again, rereading with a passion, finally really "getting it," and then compulsively seeking out everything I could find by PKD. It took me years but I eventually tracked down every last out-of-print forgotten paperback. Since then all his works have been reprinted and made easily available. But my original "discovery" experience is why this LOA volume means so much to me now. The Man in the High Castle is perhaps the best alternate history ever written, a speculation on what life would have been like if the Germans and Japanese had won World War II. Ubik is a brilliant ontological quest into the very structure of reality. Do Androids Dream, the novel on which the film Blade Runner is based, is among other things a meditation on what it means to be human. These four novels have become like cornerstones in my own life's journey. For them to have been given this respectful and definitive publication is something that brings me a lot of pleasure, and would also, I think, have pleased Philip K. Dick.

    5 out of 5 stars a great collection.......2007-05-18

This ought to be one of three volumes of Dick's novels; in that case it would probably be the best. A full set of six including the short stories would be invaluable. I would also like to see the Library of America produce a Robert E. Howard volume.

5 out of 5 stars PKD Would Be Proud.......2007-05-16

This handsome volume of four of PKD's most acclaimed science-fiction novels from the '60s is a pure delight. To be included in the company of John Steinbeck and Saul Bellow (two other authors graced with 2007 Library of America releases) doubtlessly would make PKD smile: finally vindicated! I'm not sure that his days of horsemeat-eating and penny-ante royalty checks are truly assuaged by this posthumous honor--but better late than never. The chronology of Dick's life and works at the volume's close is detailed and heartwrenching. Hopefully Dick's inclusion in the Library of America series will further increase his worldwide status as a major American talent who transcended the limitations of his genre, creating dystopian visions of lasting significance for humanity.

I hope we soon will be feted with a companion volume of four of Dick's mainstream novels--perhaps [...]
Wherever you are, PKD--hat's off! It's not just kibble anymore.

    2 out of 5 stars Unfortunate Choice.......2007-05-14

The Library of America (LOA) has decided to broaden the canon of American literature by issuing a good deal of writing that is not traditionally considered literature. This includes important political documents, high quality journalism, and historical works like the great works of Parkman and Adams. This is really admirable. LOA has decided also to publish the better work from some distinctively American popular genres. This has led to publication, for example, of Raymond Chandler's novels. This is also admirable.
LOA has apparently decided to publish some Science Fiction and has led with some of the novels of Philip Dick. This is a mistake. Dick has aroused some enthusiasm in academic circles because a good deal of his work has a modernist/experimental character. As stated in a blurb on a recent paperback edition of one of his novels, he is a poor man's Thomas Pynchon. Dick, however, was a markedly uneven writer. Some of his work is decent but much is not written particularly well. Genre fiction is often judged by extra-literary criteria. In the case of the best Science Fiction, this is usually a sort of gee-whiz intellectual novelty. Dick is hardly outstanding by this criterion. His work tends to fall between two stools, as a modernist/experimental writer, he is hardly first rate. If you want Thomas Pynchon, you should read Thomas Pynchon. Neither does he represent the intellectual novelty of better Science Fiction.
If LOA really wants to bring out good collections of Science Fiction, they should consider the following. A good short story anthology, which might include a couple of Dick's stories, would be excellent as there is a substantial body of good Science Fiction short stories. A selection of the small number of good novels, including books like Miller's A Canticle for Leibowitz and Heinlein's The Moon is a Harsh Mistress would be good. If they want to do single author volumes, then Ursula LeGuin and Cordwainer Smith would be the only reasonable candidates.

      5 out of 5 stars Incredible!.......2007-01-12

My daughter introduced me to this great resource for marriage. I read it. I studied it. I wasn't disappointed and you won't be either. Discover 7 life-changing principles to meet the relational challenges of marriage, and have fun doing it!

5 out of 5 stars We love this book!.......2006-11-11

I co-lead a Bible study group which is using this book right now. Honestly, we haven't totally finished it yet, but so far, this is a great book. It is easy to read so it doesn't mean an overwhelming amount of homework for the group. The study questions in the back do not simply ask you to "fill in the blank" from what you have already read. The questions suppliment the reading. The author intertwines her writing with scripture and quotes from a poll of husbands. Many contemporary wives will see themselves in this book. In the end, this book is more about a wife's relationship with God than about a wife's relationship with her husband. This book can change your life and improve your marriage.

5 out of 5 stars Very good book.......2006-06-27

This book did a good job describing what men want and giving suggestions of how to give it to them. I've read much of the same stuff before, but this was a well-written book on the topic and I'm going to keep it in my library for another read-through.

However, if you were to buy just one book on the subject of improving your relationship with your husband (which is why I bought this), I'd recommend "For Women Only" by Shaunti Feldhahn. She not only covers most of the topics in this book but she goes much more in-depth so you can really understand what men mean when they say that they want respect or whatever.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent book. Highly recommended.......2005-07-05

Jaynes is a God-fearing woman who writes about what it is to love your man well. She writes beautifully, feels deeply, thinks clearly and gives today's woman -- "modern" and "traditional" alike -- a good dose of reality in a kind but direct way. The reality is, your marriage isn't about you. It's about God. Finding and marrying the right person matters, but being the right person is our calling. Great advice!
I'm single and bought this for a married friend, and ended up reading the whole thing myself on an airport layover. It's a great read even for singletons.

      1 out of 5 stars Argh!.......2007-06-06

I will admit to writing this review because this book really, really irritated me. It was one of those books that you read and wish that: A. You hadn't spent actual money on it and B. You really, really wish you could get that hour and a half of your life back.

WARNING: If you are planning to read this book this review contains spoilers.

I like Sherrilyn Kenyon, and I often find the stories she turns into shorts are the ones I wish she'd "novelize," (and some of her novels I really could live with if they were just shorts). This short story was set in the distant outer space future and not part of any of her current series, so far as I know. It was short and sweet, emphasis on the way, way too short; it felt like huge chunks of the story were missing. The story is of the young princess Livia whose abusive father is forcing her to marry the really old disgusting guy to cement a trade agreement. Old smelly guy demands a virgin; so in order to escape from him and to escape from trading one kind of enslaved captive life for another (only involving icky groping this time), she sneaks out to a bar to find a cherry popper. There she finds Adron, who we later find out is the prince of the planet they happen to be on. Adron is damaged and frail thanks to an earlier encounter with a psychopath while saving an innocent kid (how disgustingly sweet). Princess has sex with Adron, Daddy tracks her down in the morning and barges into their bedroom. Daddy threatens her, and in a bid to protect her Adron claims he took her for wife and she agrees. Princess is a magic healer, ends up healing Adron at the cost of her own health, but her mommy the better healer shows up to save her, too. Happy ending is had. I don't like space operas. I don't like futuristic romances for the most part. This story is the exception. This story's biggest problem was that it was too short, I'd like to see a longer, better fleshed out version, and as much as I hate to say it (I really do have this strange aversion to space romance), I'd even read this if it turned into a series.

That said and moving on, the other three stories in this book were a waste of space that made my head hurt.

The Maggie Shayne short is the story of psychic girl who gets visions of the future who ends up with the detective cursed to die at 35 (like all the men of his family). Together they try to investigate a series of unconvincing rape/murders. It turns out the so-called "curse" on our hero is his (utterly mundane) fatherly boss, the chief of police, who is also conveniently the raping murderer. I'm not a big Shayne fan, even her vampire romances are formulaic and trite with few exceptions, and this story is in that same category. Her detective is a moron and a jacka--; apparently cops in Shayne's world have the crime solving IQ of cabbages (with a general IQ no higher...) and her psychic is a useless ninny.

Shocking Lucy by Suzanne Forster is as dumb as its title. Girl is engaged, girl's fiancé has friend seduce girl to see if it's really true love, Girl and dumb seducer fall in love, Girl decides not to be with either one of them because of the "deception", seducer makes grand gesture and wins girl back. Awful. Unpleasant. Nausea inducing. I can't even say I hated the characters in this story, because, while they were so offensively moronic as to inspire hatred, they were too shallow to even care about enough to hate. Before I review a book, especially if I'm going to give a negative review I re-read it in an attempt to be fair. I tried to re-read this story before reviewing it, but about 10 pages in I got so annoyed that I flipped to the end. I just couldn't bring myself to reread it. In fact, I'm concerned that the awful dullness of this story will cause me to block it from my memory and in a horrible moment of brain lapse I'll mistakenly re-read it and hate myself forever. I need to remind myself I should never visit this story again, I'm thinking of making a note of that in black permanent ink on the first page of it but can't bring myself to deface a book.

I wanted to like Virginia Kantra's Midsummer Night's Magic because I like fairytales. I wanted, I tried, and I failed miserably. This is a modern retelling of Tam Lin (girl's beau gets kidnapped by Queen of Fae and girl has to hold on to him all night to win him back, despite various and painful transformations on his part). In this version girl is a librarian and boy is the guy she was dating who disappeared 14 years earlier (they had a fight and he walked out and never came back, turns out he went to play with the fairies). She runs into him in the woods on Beltane thanks to a fan belt that snaps and strands the AAA-less twit (rant: if you have zero mechanical aptitude, it's okay, we all have strengths and weaknesses. Just, for crying out loud, own up to it and get roadside assistance, or have a mechanically inclined friend on speed dial, or at least have some vague, foggy notion of something you could possibly do in the event of vehicle failure beyond hoping a mysterious stranger will magically appear and fix your car and won't murder you for having brains made of porridge and being too stupid to live.)
(Back to the review) "Wow, he bears a remarkable resemblance to someone I knew many years ago," our brainiac opines when the handsome stranger comes wandering out of the woods, in the middle of nowhere, in the middle of the night, demanding she remove her pantyhose so he can fix her car (see, too stupid to live, brains that would envy porridge). Car fixed, girl drives away. Months later (maybe it was days, or weeks, who cares?) girl sees boy a second time driving in the same middle of nowhere, in the middle of the night, has random sex with him in the woods, and gets herself knocked up. She is still too stupid to figure out who he is, even after he TELLS her what's going on. Finally, Puck visits her and spells it out for her in little teeny tiny words she can understand, sort of. She goes back to the woods on Halloween to Face Off with the Fae in an absurd (I don't know if it's the fact that the author found the description of the shirt necessary or the idea of the shirt itself I found so incredibly absurd, but it certainly stayed with me) Pumpkin shirt and a f(very bad word)ing SKIRT to play out the Tam Lin story and try to hold on to her man. First of all, I really hope my librarians are literate enough to have at least a vague recollection of classic fairytales, and second of all, WHAT LIBRARIAN, WITH AN ENTIRE LIBRARY AT HER DISPOSAL is too BLOODY STUPID to at least do SOME research into what is going on and not WEAR A SKIRT TO A SHOWDOWN??? Anywise, it's an utterly unimaginative slaughter of an old fairytale and so, of course, has an utterly inane oversimplified and predictable happy ever after that both main characters are too terminally stupid to deserve.

      5 out of 5 stars satisfied.......2007-05-18

I am never disappointed by Ms. Kenyon's books. I just get somewhat impatient for the next release.

      5 out of 5 stars Good BOOK.......2007-03-08

Favorite Authors of all time. It's a great book to read if your a big fan of romance.

3 out of 5 stars Not Up to Par.......2006-12-22

This is a compilation by authors Sherrilyn Kenyon, Maggie Shayne, Suzanne Forster and Virginia Kantra.

The first story Fire and Ice a disappointing short story by Sherrilyn Kenyon is set in the future and Adron the hero, is a former assassin for his government who was terribly mangled and injured in a rescue attempt of a pregnant woman years ago. His injuries have left him forever in pain and terribly bitter. When he meets Livia who is escaping an arranged marriage to a cruel old man, he marries her to save her from her fate. Livia falls instantly in love with her new husband who tries to harden his heart against her for fear of loving someone and being rejected but he finds himself in love with her as well. When Livia makes a sacrifice for Adron, he must allow himself to fight for this love. I was disappointed in this story because it left too many unexplained questions as to why things are the way they are. I understand it is a short story but I have seen authors pull these off and not leave you hanging. This definitely is not up to Kenyon's standards.

The second story by Maggie Shayne is Daydream Believer. It is a little better than the first story. Megan Rose has visions and when she has one about the location of a body calls her local police department only to be told her information is wrong. Actually, her information is right on target and a suspicious police chief asks his top detective Sam to get close to Megan to find out if she is an accomplace to the crime. When it becomes apparent that a seriel killer is on the loose, Sam asks for Megan's help in cracking the case but she ends up being stalked by the killer. Then Sam has to decide whether he will change his beliefs and really believe that Megan is psychic although he knows he is falling in love with her. Megan knows Sam has doubts but needs his trust to fully love him. Once again, this story kind of disappoints in that there are holes in the story. The author explains that Sam's dad had dirt on the police chief but never tells exactly what it was.

The third story by Suzanne Forster, Shocking Lucy, is okay but once again I feel let down by the author in that it feels like an important element of the story is missing. When Lucy meets sexy Noah, she starts doubting whether she should follow through with her impending marriage. Her fiance, Frederick meets every requirement for the perfect man on a list she made when she was in high school. The only requirement he doesn't meet is that his kisses don't make her sparkle. Lucy feels a secure man is better than passion but her feelings for Noah makes her have doubts. Noah is determined to prove that she can have that sparkle and a good man, but when Lucy feels betrayed by Noah she starts doubting everything.

The last story by Virginia Kantra, Midsummer Night's Magic, is the story of Janet a 35 year old librarian that stumbles onto a wild party when her car breaks down. She meets a man who looks just like the boyfriend she loved who disappeared when they were 22 years old. When she finds out he is her old boyfriend Ross, he tells her that he was kidnapped by the Shidh after a fight they had in college and is bound to the queen so she won't let him leave. They make love and Janet leaves. Three months later, a pregnant Janet comes back looking for Ross. She finds out he is to be sacrificed on Halloween but she can save him if she is willing to do what it takes.

These short stories are lacking somehow and I know that these kind of books can be good because I have read several that succeeded. Still the stories are entertaining enough, but there are so many better books out there that I would rather read.

4 out of 5 stars Nice little bits of escapism.......2006-04-28

I liked these stories overall, some were better thanothers.

      "Fire and Ice" Sherrily Kenyon

This is a sci-fi, future fantasy type story, it starts out in a seedy bad--always a fun place to begin. With a roguish fellow who wants to be drunk desperately and a princess who wants to 'give it up' so she doesn't hve to marry a geezer in an arranged marriage. And poof. The chemistry btwn the two lead characters is great, the story is really interesting, both of the main characters are well drawn and engaging, it was a smart move to put this story first because it made me want to read more.

      "Daydream Beleiver" Maggie Shayne

This one was sort of sad, its about a woman who has psychic powers that aren't particularly useful to her, until the opening of the story. They help her solve a decades old mystery, save her own life and that of her newly found love (the son of the original murder victim) While the action gets pretty intense, there isn't too much of a mystery to slove here, I had figured out who the real killer was very early on, so the build up to that was pretty wasted on me. One of the weaker stories in this book.

      "Shocking Lucy"Suzanne Forster

This one was okay, it was pretty contrived plotwise, though some of the twists were pretty entertaining. Probably in ways the weakest one in this book. Lucy is engaged to a boring but stable guy, until a man fights with her over a leather attache in a department store. He gives her sparks the way her fiance doesn't. Irony of ironies, he is an electrician (that is an unusual romantic interest job, so props for that at least). Lucy struggles with what her heart tells her and what her history in life tells her (father abandoment issues, she wants stable and boring). I quite possibly enjoyed the character of her mother the best, and she was pretty minor.

      "Midsummer Night's Magic" Virginia Kantra

This was the next best of the stories, its a new twist on the Tamerlane (sp?) story. A man dissapeared several years ago leaving a woman in the middle of a lover's spat. Now he shows up, she is half way to middle aged and he is still young and vigorous, how is this? He's been the fairy queen's consort and it is up to his former mortal lover to save him. The characters in this, inspite of their fantastical nature, were presented in a pretty real manner, which I enjoyed. I also liked Puck's presence, always the one precariously keeping the balance.

Overall an enjoyable book the first and last stories are the best by far though.

(Available as E-book or Paperback! The E-book is listed for five dollars and fifty cents by seller, Godkindoflife. Please do not order the five and a half dollar option if you would like the paperback.) Joel and Kathy Davisson experienced a troubled marriage for ten years while in the ministry. Their troubles culminated in adultery while pastoring their first church in 1991. For three years they struggled and then began to learn fresh, life-giving principles of how to have an outrageously happy marriage. God taught them that marriage has been presented 'upside down' in the church for 45 years. The principles that Joel and Kathy started to live in 1994 set their marriage right side up and will do the same thing for yours. Joel and Kathy lived this successful and new paradigm for ten years before writing their story and sharing the lessons learned. Be sure to look for book two, also for sale here at Amazon! Made in Heaven!

When it comes to communicating how struggling marriages can be healed, God has done a mighty work in authors, Joel and Kathy Davisson. And the good news is they have shared what they learned in not one, but two of the most innovative marriage books around.

Book I, The Man of Her Dreams, The Woman of His, tells how their relationship was restored, using sound biblical principals, after the sins of adultery and abuse had taken a huge toll on their marriage.

In Book II, The Man of Her Dreams The Woman of His 2 - Livin' It and Lovin' It! (Volume 2) Joel and Kathy continue to share the insight God has given them which has produced the "outrageously happy marriage" they now enjoy. Such ideas as the husband as initiator in the relationship--the husband sets the tone of the marriage--he is the leader in that sense. They also champion submission--not as it has traditionally been taught, but MUTUAL submission, wherein the wife submits to the husband AND the husband submits to the wife. As in Book I, men are called to "become the man God is calling you to be by being the husband your wife needs you to be."

In both of their books, Joel and Kathy teach tried and true concepts gleaned from the Bible that they have applied to their own once struggling, now very successful marriage. This is a must-read for anyone who wants to have or help others to have a marriage (literally) made in heaven!

The Man of Her Dreams/ The Woman of His is the best book on marital
relationships I have EVER read. This book has taken the meaning of TRUE
LOVE and COMMITMENT to another level.

I recommend this book to everyone.

You may think it is just for married couples but it is so much more than
that. This book covers self love, self respect, self esteem, character, integrity, being selfless, being committed and faithful forever, being a strong woman no matter what comes your way, being a great man when a loving relationship seems to be gone forever, patience, don't compromise who you are, don't settle for less than God's best. I could go on and on!!

This book has blessed me and the other 7 people I bought a book for so far. I am in the process of ordering 10 more and I know that is just the
beginning of my orders. This book will be part of my wedding gifts to
      couples from now on.

Joel and Kathy are so candid and honest and that is so refreshing. They have shown me how people must face the truth head on and never back down from what you know is right!! I would give this book a 10 plus and it should be on the New York Times best sellers list!

      Joel and Kathy,

You write reviews for other books without even reading them? Does that seem reasonable at all? (It certainly is not reasonable from a biblical viewpoint)
Then, you use that review to promote your own books while disparaging a book that you have not even read?

      5 out of 5 stars I Found Hope.......2007-06-08

My husband and I were struggling with issues left over by a stepfamily marriage. It was hard to overcome the past. Joel and Kathy's book opened the doors to reminding us that God has a plan for marriage, for husbands and wives. All the things that were described in this initial book jumped out at me: "Yes, true, Yes, wow, Yes..." I am a godly wife and have been praying for a miracle. My husband has been reading and absorbing!!!

5 out of 5 stars This book is RIGHT. I'm sure it works. .......2007-01-03

I bought this book, determined to follow the advice and get my own husband. As I read it though, I realized that I didn't want a husband bad enough to do the simple, normal things required to get one. I follow the recipe for staying single, almost to the letter. That's why I have been single from the time I was 18 until now and I am 53, almost 54. You get that book and then after you read it, either do what it says to do and get married, or keep on doing what you're doing now and quit griping cause you're single - just like I had to.

An old ex friend of mine followed the advice without fail. She was married within one year. Two years later, they're still sparkling with pleasure in their relationship. :))

I am AMAZED at the negative feedback. They're shooting the messenger because they don't like the message. Their feedback tells a lot more about them, than it does about the book.

      4 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2006-11-30

I thought this book was really good. It puts a lot into perspective for single women in their late 20's and early 30's who truly want to get married. I do NOT think this book is for the ones who want to RE-marry. I'm sure finding "another" husband is a little different the second time around because you're divorced, not "never married." The book helped me identify a string of men who I have dated in the past and helped me to understand the stringers, etc. I think the stages of a relationship is very important as well. It provides a blue print for relationships. I do believe that women who have a nice appearance and are attractive do have better luck because they have a wider pool of potentials. I also believe that you have to be committed to the idea and really put yourself in a place to meet eligible men. I also think this book provides reasons that most men do not reveal. As in "why didn't they call?" Most women wonder why and begin calling the guy and making fools of themselves as opposed to chalking it up as "you didn't live up to his expectations." And there's nothing wrong with that because women do it all of the time. It's about reaching mutual expectations.

I'm 31, successful, highly educated, beautiful (or so I'm constantly told) and have finally decided and committed to the idea that I want to get married. Based on the books advice, I have identified some potentials and discarded the rest (the ones I would have normally kept) and I will let you know how it goes.

      3 out of 5 stars Statistically Speaking.......2006-09-25

John Malloy teaches women how to find the right man using valid stats and information. A very good tool, not that much fun to read, however.

2 out of 5 stars Catering to the Man?.......2006-07-28

I found this book a bit old-fashioned. I just turned 40, was married once, and have been in the dating scene for 5 yrs now-- still single with no long-term (more than a year) dating companion. However I'm discouraged that if one of the only ways a single over 40 woman has a chance of finding a mate is being THIN, then I probably dont want to get married ANYWAY. (I'm still attractive, but on the plumper side- 5'10, 219) I want to find a book, instead that focuses on how to help "older" women find love by loving themselves and focusing on their INNER beauty. Look at all those gorgeous BBW's and BBW dating sites out there. The movement is growing because so many more Americans are having problems. There are men who will love you for who you are-- if not, then someone needs to work on re-socializing them in the early stages to assure better partnerships for everyone in the future. Sorry, but after 40, we women start to fade a bit...its GREAT to stay as healthy as possible, but this book is unrealstic.

4 out of 5 stars Read it, understand it and then judge it.......2006-06-08

It seems nobody has reviewed this book for a couple of years with a basic understanding of what it's about.

It's a guide to help get a man to marry you. It's based on research of the "market research" variety, which is good enough for selling Coke and Ford and should work for selling relationships (which most people want more than they want a car - most people seem to want cars to get a relationship). It's written in an informative but light-hearted way.

A lot of people in these reviews don't like the book (some who've only read a few pages). My contributions to the war:

Firstly, the book is for women who want to get married - if you don't want to get married (or at least not any time in the next 5 years) don't read it.

Second - it's qualitative research. That means you don't need big numbers you just need the right people - and he has both the right people and the numbers.

Third - weight takes up less than 1 of the 200 pages. Another is dedicated to why 20% of never-married women in their 40s would do it the same all over again. There's actually more space spent on how to maximise your chances with good-looking men than there is on weight. And that doesn't include looking good yourself.

Is the advice obvious? Well, a lot of it is straightforward. But some isn't. The reviewer who said they needed to be 26 before getting married missed the point - the majority of men need to be that age (or older if they've been to college) before they seriously think about marriage. Do their spouses? No - so if you're a 20-year-old-woman planning on finding a spouse not a boyfriend, check out the 25+ crew.

And to those good-looking women who thought the book had nothing to say to them - please read the other 199 pages. To the plump, sassy crowd - please read the other 199 pages. The biggest drawcard isn't looks.

In summary - it's good advice with sound research behind it. It's not for everyone 'cause not everyone wants to get married in the near future. But if that's you, you probably couldn't do better than this as a guide to hooking him.
