Book Description

The long-awaited GloomCookie graphic novel contains issues 1-6 of this popular comic book series, as well as some other ninja-type surprises, never before seen sketches, Serena's bad art, a cute Halloween story about The Monster entitled “Trick Or Treat”, special guest artists thingies (Ooooo! Wait till you see `em!), Lex's vocabulary list and LOTS of other squishy stuff to make you happy. As always, wrapped in a gorgeous cover by Ted Naifeh.

The Gloomcookie comic book series is a goth soap opera set in the San Francisco club scene.

5 out of 5 stars Nothing Better.......2007-05-19

I'm a huge fan of ted naifeh, this book is a huge start to this series. Highly entertaining and amazing art work. Its unfortunate Naifeh wasnt on hand for the rest of the series because it doesnt get much better than book one. From here it gets somewhat scattered and brief. This is one is definately the best. The storyline can be almost addicting to the point where you really want to read whats next even if the previous one didnt catch your intrest entirely. I got through the series typically hoping the next one was good as the last or the next is better than the rest.

4 out of 5 stars I dedicate this review to...Bela Lugosi ;p.......2005-05-29

Having read the previous reviews here prior to buying Gloom Cookie, I wasn't expecting much in the way of plot or artwork. Perhaps due to this, I was very pleasantly surprised. Hell, I think everyone who has ever ventured into the Goth subculture has met a Vermillion. This book is brilliant both for the subculture mickey-take and the fairy tale undercurrents.

The only qualm I have is the complete lack of editing. This book is worse than Laurell K Hamilton in places, there is an abundance of 'your' instead of 'you're' and completely basic spelling errors that a five year old would know, I think Ms. Valentino needs introducing to the Apostrophe Protection Society.

*Just hopes that 2 and 3 are better edited* I look forward to hearing the rest of the story though.

3 out of 5 stars Cute.......2005-03-09

Yes, cute, very cute, even. Not a comic for Goths (connoisseurs of the strange and theatrical) who don't already like comics, but certainly a cute, a very cute peek, into what you could be instead of a geek.

4 out of 5 stars Pleasantly gloomy (pun intended).......2003-10-21

I found the story a bit empty at times, with large holes left in the plot. But I still thoroughly enjoyed this comic. I must admit, I don't read comics often (it's only one of my most recently-developed habits)... so I'm not exactly familiar with the genre. The artwork was dark and definitely beautiful. I liked this book so much that I just purchased Volume Two, and I can't wait for it to arrive... :)

1 out of 5 stars Stupidity that strives to pass itself off as intelligent........2003-09-09

I know it can be argued that this book is a bit of an "inside joke" directed towards the goth community. Now as much as this rant can make me seem I'm one of those outsiders that just doesn't "get" this social parody and idlely snubbing it out of my misunderstanding, I can assure you I was really into the culture... well until I got older. I do get what the author tries to pass off as humor, but to be honest she does a poor job of it. Simply put, your not very funny Ms. Valentino. The art is poorly done, even by the standards of Slave Labor publishing label. The publishers are looking for another Johnny the Homicidal Maniac and I think it would be healthier to go in a different direction. I love Jhonen Vasquez, but even he realized Johnny was becoming played out. I found Invader Zim a refreshing change. On the subject of Gloomcookie again, It strikes out. I'd suggest another title like JTHM.
