3 out of 5 stars Ganele a la glucosa.......2007-06-27

I bought this book for my older daughter, who is overweight. Much of the symptoms of her condition were detailed in the book. But the book is too long. Anybody trying to reduce and control weight wants fast results.
A book so big is not practical. Author should review and condense it, probably to less than half.

4 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-06-04

This book taught me a lot of things about my body. I was never aware of my blood sugar levels, but now I recognize feelings I've always had - shaky, irritable - as low blood sugar. I've totally changed my diet b/c of this book, and I'm losing weight without being hungry. I'm sending my copy to a friend, and I've been telling a lot of people about it.

I really only read the first half or so. It gets a little repetitive, which is fine. That's the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars. You'll hit a section that appeals to your way of thinking. The message is the same throughout. It's not breathtaking, but it's full of staistics and information that will change the way you think. e.g. most Americans only get half the recommended amount of fiber in their diets.

I feel like reducing high glycemic index foods has ton a lot for me. I had a chronic cold/sinus infection for over 6 months that is gone. I feel more clear-headed. I'm able to resist my cravings for sweets, which is a big deal to me.

Get this book! It will turn your attitude around, and change your body and your life.

5 out of 5 stars excellent information.......2007-05-28

Loved this book. Helped me to understand the food/body relationship. We dont understand that the way we feel is directly related to what we put in our mouths. Very easy to read and keep on hand for reference.

5 out of 5 stars The Sugar Solution.......2007-05-07

This is an excellant book, good reading for everyone wanting to controll their sugar intake It has similar information as the Diabetic classes I attended last year. Every diabetic should have a copy. The monthly meal plan is good too for those trying to lose weight. I highly recomend to everyone.

Book Description

DO YOU:

· dream about writing the Great American Novel?

· regret not finishing your paintings, poems, or screenplays?

· want to start a business or charity?

· wish you could start dieting or exercising today?

· hope to run a marathon someday?

If "yes," then you need…THE WAR OF ART

Now, in this powerful, straight-from-the-hip examination of the internal obstacles to success, bestselling author Steven Pressfield shows readers how to identify, defeat, and unlock the inner barriers to creativity. THE WAR OF ART is an inspirational, funny, well-aimed kick in the pants guaranteed to galvanize every would-be artist, visionary, or entrepreneur.

Steven Pressfield enjoys great international success as a bestselling novelist. But in order to reach the top he had to do a lot of work to fight the inner demons that told him he couldn't make it. THE WAR OF ART is his challenge to creative block, and his succinct, straight-from-the-hip style will help every reader unleash their personal ambitions, be they literary, artistic, or business-minded.

According to Pressfield, the internal obstacle to success is Resistance. Resistance is the difference between the life you lead and the life you want to lead, and can take many forms. Pressfield shows readers how to identify and defeat Resistance at every turn and challenges them to change their amateurish, unsuccessful habits into a professional attitude that can get the job done. Finally, Sun Tzu for the soul!

Inspirational, funny, and a great kick in the pants, THE WAR OF ART is the perfect book for anybody who had a goal circumvented by life and circumstance: which is to say, you and everybody you've ever met.

5 out of 5 stars Most powerful motivational book I've come across in ages.......2007-06-24

I have been on a self-help kick the past couple years. Something inside me compels me to buy any book that could possibly improve my situation in life. As a creative, my crises tend to focus on self-doubt, fear of rejection and fear of failure or success.

That being said, it is doubly powerful for me to read a motivational book written by a WRITER, a fellow artist, a 'creative'. Sure, we are all creative (bankers and janitors alike), but I felt like this book addressed me in a way that Wayne Dyer's or Eckhart Tolle's books didn't (tho those authors are helpful in their own ways).

What Steven Pressfield does in THE WAR OF ART is unique in that he defines the forces that keep your 'genius' paralyzed and locked in potential, unmanifested. He contextualizes this battle with references to Blake, Homer's The Odyssey, the Kabbalah, Krishna. He enlightens us by reminding us that ART for art's sake is a truly spiritual path, serving God.

This is not a book that will tell you how to manifest a mansion in the suburbs, or how to beat 'the system' into rewarding you with other material trappings. This is a book about TRANSCENDENCE. How to appeal to a Higher Power, how to put your passion, your suffering, and your struggle within a perspective larger than your petty ego trips. But most importantly, how to get STARTED. How to get to work, and stay steady on the track of working.

The spiritual principles in the book were not new to me, but the CONTEXT and the author's PURPOSE for sharing these principles took me by surprise. One can tell that this book was written through Divine love and inspiration. Every word carefully placed. Every phrase and sentence consciously constructed for maximum impact. This speaks more volumes than a self-help book that tries to come up with a gimmick, or with a cute acronym, or a 5-step standard for success.

If you are a born artist (and trust me, after reading the first two pages of this book you'll know. I cried all through the first two sections) then this is the book to shake you out of complacency, to remind you that it's not about you, it's about God, it's about serving the higher good. To waste that potential would be a sin.

5 out of 5 stars Procrastinate No More.......2007-06-15

If you're anything like me, you know you should be sitting down and writing instead of just surfing the net, checking email (though writing email messages may count as writing), looking out the window, taking out the trash, washing the car, and whatever else follows this pattern.

When you get back in (after a day filled with other created things to do), you have this feeling that you got nothing done with what you were meant to write.

Well, this book will help you break that pattern. But it does take a bit of work. In his book, Steven Pressfield talks of the many ways we keep ourselves from doing what we know we should be doing. He talks of the evil that is resistance and how to sit down and battle it by being professional.

It is a quick read. My suggestion is read it through the first time in a single sitting. Then, the next day, go back to it and study it, gain ideas that get your attention, that you truly believe can work (and even a few you may wonder about). It is well worth the price.

5 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2007-06-13

I agree with the book's introduction that the final third is not quite as good as the first 2/3's, but do not let that stop you. This book changed how I viewed my life.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2007-06-13

Simply the best book on creativity ever written. Honestly changed my life. First read it three years ago and still mentally refer to it constantly. If you are prevaricating about buying it, don't: just do it. You'll never make such a good investment in your life. Nothing will give your creativity a kickstart like Pressfield's call to arms.

    Book Description

No more counting carbs, calories, or fat grams! This revolutionary diet plan works with your hormones to curb your appetite, boost your metabolism, and take the pounds off for good!

Cutting-edge research shows that losing weight is not about carbs, calories, or even willpower—it’s about a hormone called leptin, and how it functions in your body. Leptin is your body’s natural weight-loss mechanism: it curbs your appetite, jump-starts your metabolism, and when working properly makes you literally fat resistant—you will lose weight effortlessly and efficiently and never gain those pounds back.

If you’re struggling to lose weight, chances are you are “leptin resistant”—your body no longer responds to leptin, making it impossible for you to slim down. The Fat Resistance Diet is the first and only eating plan designed specifically to combat leptin resistance and reprogram your body to start melting away the pounds. Using a breakthrough combination of anti-inflammatory and hormone-balancing foods, the three-phase regimen delivers:

A loss of six to ten pounds in the first two weeks.
A loss of at least two pounds a week thereafter.
Fun, flavorful meals that make sticking with the plan a breeze.
An easy maintenance program that keeps you fat resistant for life.

With over 100 delicious recipes designed for maximum satisfaction and eating pleasure, the Fat Resistance Diet is the only diet you’ll ever need—a brand new way to eat that will transform your body into a lean, fat-fighting machine.

1 out of 5 stars the fat resistance diet by dr leo galland.......2007-05-14

i subscribe to xm radio and particularly enjoy dr mehmet oz...i had listened to dr leo galland on his show and thought what he had to say was very compelling, so i bought the book...i was so disapointed....he could have condwensed the entire contents of the book to one page, even one sentence...give up refined sugar...nevertheless, because i have always had a problem with high cholesterol, i faithfully tried his program for several months...then i had my cholesterol checked again...nothing had changed...i will continue on with his diet for 4 more months, but no longer have high expectations...

    4 out of 5 stars healthy eating.......2007-05-12

This book not only gives you a start in losing weight, it offers you a way of eating healthy for life. Lots of recipes and a shopping list that helps too.

3 out of 5 stars Eat your veggies...............2007-04-17

..exercise, avoid trans fats and processed foods. Not much here that we haven't already been told a thousand times. My biggest complaint about this book is that if you don't want to follow Dr. Galland's menus for each stage, you won't know what to add to the next stage without going through his meal plans and figuring out what is different. Lists of what to eat and what not to eat on each stage would have made the plan much easier to follow. There is a bit more information for the first stage including the helpful eating out ideas sheet, but otherwise I felt very lost.

The best thing I can say about The Fat Resistance Diet is that the recipes are very, very good. Easy to prepare as well.

5 out of 5 stars Five star meals.......2007-03-25

Recommended by doctors, this book outlines a sensible and healthy eating plan with 5-star meals!

4 out of 5 stars It seems to work!.......2007-03-19

Our doctor recommended this book because he felt that its fat-resistance diet would halt the inflammation aggravating my husband's severe arthritis. It certainly helped my arthritis; I feel better than I have in about 10 years. The recipes are delicious and easily prepared. The text is clear.

      Book Description

In this candid memoir, A. Alfred Taubman explains how a dyslexic Jewish kid from Detroit grew up to be a billionaire retailing pioneer, an intimate of European aristocrats and Palm Beach socialites, a respected philanthropist and, at age 78, a federal prisoner.

With a unique blend of humor and genius, Taubman shows how selling fine art and antiques really isn't that different from marketing root beer or football, and offers penetrating insights into that quintessential palace of commerce, the luxury shopping mall. Alfred Taubman may not have invented the modern shopping center but, in the words of The New Yorker, "he perfected it."

Taubman's life has been a storybook success, with its share of unique challenges. A pioneer builder and innovative real estate developer, he was also a brilliant land speculator, operator of a quick-serve restaurant chain, and owner of a major department store company. But what seemed like the pinnacle of his career, buying and reinventing the venerable art auction house Sotheby's, would lead to his conviction in an international price fixing scandal.

Despite the twists and turns, Taubman's life and business philosophy can be summed up in one evocative phrase: Threshold Resistance. Understanding and defeating that force—breaking down the barriers between art and commerce, between shoppers and merchandise, between high culture and popular taste—has been his life's work.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The rest of the story...........2007-04-17

Having just finished reading A. Alfred Taubman's new book, "Threshold Resistance", I am thoroughly intrigued and amazed with this story. With his entire life focused on doing the right and best things for as many people as possible, how could it be that he ended up on the wrong side of the Government and spent time in our prison system? As with any situation where the primary information comes from new sources, internet, or just word of mouth, this book reminds me as a reader that there is a second side to every story. I felt the sincerity in every word written by Mr. Taubman and I can only wish that the entire jury had been able to hear the whole story before convicting him; I believe the course would have changed. However, his own words of "Faith, along with friends and family, can get you through the most difficult of life's tests" truly confirms that he left prison a far richer man than when he entered.

5 out of 5 stars Great lessons in life and business.......2007-04-16

I found this book to be remarkable. Taubman writes with humor and humility. I would suggest that this be required reading in business school classes in entrepreneurship and ethics. His story is one of a Shakespearean drama - his rise from depression era poverty, funding his education through the selling of shoes, to being a young architect boldly suggesting to an industry icon that through design a better sales and profits would result. Then starting his own firm with $5,000 to becoming a billionaire who brought creativity to the business of selling art, root beer and charitable giving. Then as in any great drama the betrayal of a trusted person (Dede Brooks CEO of Sotheby's) and the revelation of his untold side of the trial including prosecutorial misconduct and a judge with more than questionable judgment.
Al Taubman has had an extraordinary career with a story of determination and redemption that will serve well those interested in family business, marketing, functional design, the history of real estate development, trial strategy, charitable giving, art history and personal accomplishment. 5 stars!

4 out of 5 stars Billionaire Claims Innocence.......2007-04-13

Finally, we get "his" side of the story. In this excellent memoir, Taubman reflects on his successes in the shopping mall and real estate world. The details are fascinating and his entree into the world of high finance and the art world are entertaining...we learn that perhaps selling art is not at all like selling root beer. When he stood trail for the Sotheby's/Christie's price fixing scandal in 2001, he went against his better judgement and intuition, and listened to his lawyers. He never defended himself on the stand! Sounds like his got terrible advice from his high priced advisors. I was left with more answers, but a feeling of a missed opportunity on his part. Why did such an intelligent and clever man fail to speak up and tell his version of the truth when it was obviously called for? If we believe his side of the story, the true criminals are still out there in the public - it is a scary tale- a miscarriage of justice and real life tale of greed and deceit. Glad I got my hand on this book! The lesson learned is this....ALWAYS trust your intuition!

      Book Description

Patriots: Surviving the Coming Collapse is novel set in the near future that describes a full scale socioeconomic collapse. More than just an exciting read, it is packed with useful survival and preparedness tips. It was described by one reviewer as "A survival manual neatly dressed as fiction."

An earlier short draft edition of the novel was distributed as shareware on the Internet in the early 1990s. At the time, despite the relatively small readership of the Internet, it had more than 82,000 downloads, making it the net´s most popular shareware novel of the decade. It was hosted at seven mirror sites on three continents.

"Patriots" is distinctly pro-Christian, pro-preparedness, pro-gun ownership, and anti-racist. It is considered a "must read" by those are concerned with the fragility of our society, and those interested in preparedness. It is also popular in Libertarian circles. "Patriots" was authored by James Wesley, Rawles, the editor of www.SurvivalBlog.com

      Customer Reviews:

      3 out of 5 stars Good reference.......2007-06-23

This a good read on basic survival skills. The best parts of this
book are author's recommendations on "existing" products.

Dressed as a novel, it provides a good reference book on guns and other
      survival tools and materials.

The story line is poorly developed; it looks like the author wanted
to squeeze in as many details about the survival "tools/materials" and
the actual story takes a back seat.

It is a good read and I recommend this book even if you are not Christian
      or don't like guns.

It is a must read for Christians and gun enthusiasts.

      3 out of 5 stars Militia-Style Survivalist Manual in a Fiction Format.......2007-06-08

Patriots is a TEOWAWKI , militia-style survivalist novel packed with information. While Patriots does mention stockpiling food and the use of non-hybrid seeds this is not a book about self-sufficiency. The premise of the novel is that an economic depression spirals out of control. The economy completely collapses, money becomes worthless, the mail stops, the power grid and phone system shuts down and the government at all levels disappears. In the story this period is understatedly call the Crunch, but no depression in the history of the United States has been nearly so severe. Even church services appear to stop for several years.

With the United States in turmoil and collapse, the United Nations and at least some international banks have survived. Together they become the catalyst behind a provisional federal government that seeks to exert near dictatorial control over America. Frankly, I believe there is much more strength in the institutions of the United States than there ever was in the United Nations and so this plot scenario strained believability for me. However, when asked, James Rawles stated, "I made the scenario in the novel a near `worst case' in order to make it more interesting reading, and as an opportunity to show the need for planning and preparedness in a variety of areas..."

Using the Crunch as a literary device Rawles packs the novel with data about guns, medicine, fuels, equipment and tactics. The book has been described in several online reviews as a "survival manual fairly neatly dressed as fiction." Indeed it is much more entertaining than reading the facts in a reference book or manual. But this is also the greatest weakness. It is hard to pack facts into a novel without the author intruding into the story. Much of this story is told in the form of narration, as opposed to showing within the flow of the events. Characterization is weak. Both author intrusion and narration weaken the literary quality of the story but add to the amount of information Rawles packs into the book

Recommendation: The information is five-star, the literary quality is two star. Buy Patriots for the "survival manual," not the fiction story.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent source of information.......2007-05-15

As other reviewers have mentioned, this book starts out kind of slow. It goes through the description of the how the economy came to be in such a bad shape and then describes how it fell. It was not something I personally cared for. However once you get past the details of how the U.S.A. economy crashed the book takes you on a winding path of survival and patriotism.

The book is a great source for anyone wanting to know more about preparing for any long term emergency. The author goes into detail about what equipment the characters have and where they got modifications to those pieces of equipment. He then goes on to give an appendix listing where most of the items can be purchased or services rendered.

All in all, I gave it 5 stars not only for the great source of information but the very entertaining fiction read.

Also if you enjoy this book you will most likely enjoy "Lights Out".[...]

      5 out of 5 stars Great Read.......2007-05-10

I cannot add anymore to this book than has already been added by others, all i can say is fantastic read.

4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Good storyline, amazing survialist detail.......2007-04-08

The first 2/3 of this book is very, very good. The plot is interesting and the detail about survival retreat planning and operation is so good its almost a technical operations manual or "how-to" guide. If you are at all interested in survival preparedness, then this book is a must read.

Where the book kind of lost it for me was the last 1/3 of the plot where it delved into the extreme right-wing/christianist view of the new world order/armagedon. The allegories to the "mark of the beast" and the radical libritarian view of the federal government really brought the book down in my opinion.

      [...]

On the other hand, I don't think anyone can suggest after 9/11 and Katrina that a massive collapse of American Society is not at least possible. To that end, it is just prudent to have some kind of survival preparation. The author's website, [...], is full of useful information. But, to assert, as the author does, that this would lead to UN control of the US and the implantation of computer chips into everyone's arms or forheads in order to buy and sell is simply unbelievable for me. I have to beleive that the same resourcefulness, inventivness and spirit of Americans would preval to restore, abeit in a smaller, more limited form, the American Republic and American Society as we know it.

So, I give the book 4 out of 5 stars. Its a good read and, more importantly, offers a wealth of information on survival preparation.

      Book Description

Finally, here is a lifelong, livable eating program that controls insulin and leads to long-term weight loss without forbidding readers' favorite foods. More than 95 percent of the authors' patients have successfully lost weight and maintained it with the program, which links carbohydrates with the right amount of protein for maximum weight loss.

If you are struggling with weight loss, you are not alone. Two out of three Americans are now considered overweight even though so many of us are forever counting calories and fat grams. But as Cheryle R. Hart and Mary Kay Grossman explain, a medical condition called insulin resistance may be the cause of your weight-loss woes.

A complex relationship exists between food, blood sugar, insulin, and fat. Insulin helps the body transform food into energy and regulate blood sugar levels. When we eat carbohydrates, the body breaks them down into sugar (glucose) to be used as energy. If you have more glucose than your body needs, your body will respond by producing more insulin: the insulin will stabilize your blood sugar level by storing the excess glucose as fat, and this means weight gain. This process is accelerated in people with insulin resistance because they have higher baseline levels of insulin.

So, is the solution to insulin resistance omitting carbohydrates from our diet? Such a diet is neither healthy nor satisfying. Carbohydrates are our bodies' main source of energy and are an excellent source of both antioxidants, which help prevent disease, and fiber, which is essential for proper digestion. Our natural desire for carbohydrates would be difficult to deny. The Insulin-Resistance Diet offers an alternative.

The Insulin-Resistance Diet is really not a diet book at all--it's an eating guide. It allows you to eat all the foods you like in the proper amounts and still control insulin resistance and lose weight. Inside you will find the following features:

These features together with in-depth sections on fitness and on understanding our relationship with food comprise a total weight-loss and weight-management program--one that is simple to follow and guarantees success.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book balanced with Great Information.......2007-06-15

I read this book end to end last week. I wanted to read it carefully before making any serious changes. I was diagnosed with PCOS (after years of symptoms) last year. I was never told that insulin resistance is a complication of PCOS until a few weeks ago after annual blood work. I was Pre Diabetic. So I started the hunt to educate myself. This is the only book that represents explanation for all of my issues.. PCOS, Pre Diabetes and being overweight. It is a clear read. Explains in great detail how the body functions and how to fix it. I have been food linking for about a week and noticed immediatly that I was sleeping all night. I weighed myself this morning and found that I weighed 4 lbs less. I am eating more, eating more often and actually having bread or rice. It feels like Freedom! If you have PCOS, Pre Diabetes or even weight gain that is difficult to lose.. try this book!

      5 out of 5 stars Very eye-opening!.......2007-06-06

4 out of 5 stars Insulin Resistance - now I understand WHY I was so hungry!.......2007-06-03

I've been studying nutrition forever to try to figure out how I would be able to eat enough to lose weight but not starve. I'm about 60 pounds overweight and have been on 99% of the diets out there and refuse to do one again. Yet I want to be healthy.

This book explained why I was hungry all the time and taught me how to eat so that my blood sugar didn't skyrocket then crash. I've been following the simple guidelines (balancing carbs with protein) for the last month or so and have lost 12 pounds, have lots of energy, and no longer crave sweets. Which is saying a lot, because my office is filled with all manner of empty calories -- which no longer call to me! It's a miracle!

I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to know how to keep their energy up and not feel as though they're starving. Once you learn the tricks of balancing the carbs and proteins you can eat without having to obsess over calories or writing everything down and becoming an annoyance to everyone within earshot. Good information in understandable language.

5 out of 5 stars A good introduction to the Zone Diet.......2007-06-17

I was reading bits and pieces of the Zone Diet on the net, and decided the best way to move ahead was order this book. The book covers everything you need to get started and explains the core concepts of the diet without getting too technical.

Out of all the dieting/health books I've read the Zone Diet makes the most sense to me. The book covers the core concepts, and provides a one week plan to get started. Thereafter there are too many resources on the net to mention that provide support for the diet especially the wide array of recipes.

As long as you do your shopping and have your meals prepared - following this eating 'lifestyle' will be a breeze.

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommend for newly diagnosed Type II Diabetics.......2007-04-22

When I found out I had Type II diabetes, I was completely baffled and lost. Then, an Australian nutritional counselor I met told me to follow this diet. I figured instead of buying the full-blown version of the big book, I would start small and buy this condensed version. It was an easy read - took a few hours - and it made so much sense. In the first six days, I lost 13 lbs. and felt AMAZING. It was the first time in 5 years I had felt this good.

I have continued to refer to it and refine my dietary plan. In the past 90 days, I have lowered my blood sugar - without medication - by 30 points and dropped my A1C number from 6.9 to 6.6. Even my doctor was amazed.

Diabetes can be a confusing and scary illness. So, start small, and change what you can. Consider this book your first step towards successful management of your health!

4 out of 5 stars This is really all you need to learn The Zone.......2006-08-16

Don't bother with the longer books unless you want to get down and into the scientific data behind the Zone. And don't bother with the cookbook because it's absolutely horrible. This book explains the Zone and how to get there, has a few sample menu's (that should be used as guide's only) and a list of food 'blocks' in the back. It's all you need to get going. I highly recommend this book, and the Zone diet in general. I have lost 15 lbs in the past 7 weeks. It has been 7 easy weeks with 100% contentment and 0% hunger & struggles. I could not be happier.

5 out of 5 stars The Zone Cliff Notes version.......2006-07-18

This little book explains the Zone diet in a quick read and avoids the long clinical approach found in his other books.I went from 209 pounds to 151 pounds with the principles of this book. Once you understand how insulin works against you to store fat,and learn the right amount of protein and carbs your body needs to maintain your ideal weight, you can begin your journey to eat in the zone and lose weight. It has been my eating guidelines for almost 10 years. It is well worth the trouble to learn to treat food as a drug.

3 out of 5 stars This Guy Is No Chef.......2006-02-16

I can't speak to the theory behind this diet. Whether the diet keeps your insulin within a favorable zone, or whether doing that has beneficial health effects. What I can say after a few days is that this program is not for the faint of heart. You'll be consuming fruits and vegetables in quantities you never dreamed of. And if you have any issues with gastric acidity, I don't know how you'll get past the first day.

One thing he says is certainly true: You won't be hungry. Here's Day 1 breakfast for a man: 1 cup cottage cheese, 1 cup pineapple, 2/3 cup mandarin orange, and 4 macadamia nuts. All good food, and if you can eat that 2 days in a row without retching, this is the diet for you. It's just too much fruit.

Here's a dinner, stir-fried in only 1-1/3 TEASPOONS of olive oil: 6 oz. tofu, 1-1/2 cups onions, 2 cups broccoli, 2 cups mushrooms, 1 ounce (1 deli slice) low-fat Swiss cheese. Plus a cup of grapes for dessert. If you're willing to dedicate yourself to mounds of unflavored vegetables and gobs of fruit for the sake of your health, this is the meal for you. Why this recipe? Because it adds up to his dietary theory.

I'm trying it for a few days longer. But here's my advice: Don't hesitate to add soy sauce, Worchestershire, balsamic vinegar, or a little Ceasar dressing to the vegetables. Certainly you'll need more olive oil. And don't be afraid to substitute some "unfavorable carbohydrates" (whole-grain bread, brown rice, etc.) for half the carbs. He gives you the info you need, or you can go to a site like www.nutritiondata.com/index.html for carb counts. It can save you from following a lunch of tuna salad with half a cantaloupe filled with 3/4 cup of blueberries. All good, but just plain too much.

3 out of 5 stars Difficult to get through, but worth the effort.......2005-06-24

I have used Ong's book in a number of classes (I am an anthropologist). I use it as an example of the impact of globalization and industrialization on women. I like it because Ong specifically addresses this issue in the book: she gives an overview of the historical processes that have shaped Malaysia (i.e., industrialization didn't just happen in a vacuum: there were historical precedents), and she clearly outlines how industrialization has reshaped gender relations in rural Malaysian society.

However, her prose can be very difficult to wade through at times. Her theoretical approach is postmodernist, relying heavily on Foucault. There's a lot of jargon here, and undergraduates can be put off by that. In class, I have to help them with a bit of an overview of postmodernism and Foucault more specifically. For the general reader, a book like Postmodernism for Beginners (which uses comics to explain theory) might be useful!

I'd like to add that I disagree with Palanisamy Ramasamy's review: she writes that Ong argues that returning to the past (the "old tranquil kampung life") is the solution for women. I don't think that that is what Ong argues at all. I don't think she sees "traditional" kampung life as being all that positive a thing for women; but she also argues that industrialization ("modernity") -- while providing kampung women with some escape from rigid gender roles -- has produced a whole new set of problems for kampung women as they challenge those roles. My impression is that kampung women can be "stuck between a rock and a hard place" as Malaysia attempts to transition from what is basically a subsistence/horticultural society into an industrialized society (for better or worse).

However, I do think she's right to say that Ong's discussion of resistance is pretty thin: one wonders if women don't resist in other ways, and/or if they even consider spirit possession a form of resistance. There is no evidence presented that they do. Ong doesn't even seem sure of that. Thus, the book ends on an ambiguous note.

      3 out of 5 stars A Postmodernist Approach.......2000-02-29

Ong has come out with an interesting and well-researched piece on the subject of female resistance. But unfortunately, she only focusses on mass hysteria as the most commonly articulated resistance among young Malay women. But what about other forms of resistances such as overt and collective. What is the solution for women? Ong is under the impression that the old tranquil kampung life is the best remedy. Can these workers go back to the past? Is there a time-tunnel?

3 out of 5 stars a clear explanation of malaysian factory women's resistence.......1999-04-16

Aihwa Ong takes an anthropological perspective in defining the occurences of spirit posessions and mass hysteria among the female factory workers in malaysia. By illustrating the evolution of the malaysian economy from agrarian to industrial, disintegration of the traditional family norms and reifying the responsibility of kin, the stage is set to portray the culture shock. the author uses case studies to show the diverse changes that affect the family and the distribution of economic responsibility. further, the conflict between the factory operators and the control imposed on them by upper levels of management adds to the tension that these factory workers must cope with. as these women use religious responses instead of more pragmatic methods to confront the issues of corporate and social control that are enacted upon them, they maginify the cultural perceptions that women are the spiritually susceptible, therefore, enabling a break and a vent for the archived anger and frustration that this economic system has smelted. I found the book informative and a better resource for sociological studies than anthropological endeavors, easy to read, and a worthy text for an Anthropology 101 or Sociology 111 course.

4 out of 5 stars Ong's work is necessary in any discussion of globalization........1998-10-12

The American Dream. An ideal, the golden land, something to strive for, capitalism. For most immigrants of the early twentieth century, the "American" way of life was sought after as a better way than that found in the old country. Imagine the dilemma posed to you if that same type of capitalistic market was forced onto you, the villager of rural Malaysia, never having wanted a change in lifestyle. In her book, Spirits of Resistance and Capitalist Discipline, Aihwa Ong aims to show how the experiences of Malay women working in neoteric factories and capitalistic life culminate in spirit attacks on the factory floor. Ong succeeds in this endeavor and allows for the intellectual discussion of the possible ramifications of the development of capitalistic ventures on a global scale. Ong addresses her work to a unique group of scholars familiar with the affairs of Southeast Asia, supplementing the anthropological studies of others such as Michael Taussig. She notes, "Spirit possession episodes, in which women become violent and scream abuses, are to be deciphered not so much as a noncapitalist critique of abstract exchange values (Taussig 1980) but as a protest against the loss of autonomy/humanity in work (7-8)." Ong proves this thesis by examining the different aspects of Malay life that have been effected since British colonization: "In the specified spheres of social welfare, sexuality, and education, to name only a few, the everyday lives of village Malays are being reconstituted according to new concepts, language, and procedures (55)." Before the British introduced capitalism to Malaysia, the peasant household strove to be self-sufficient and adapted to easy relocation. While the village (kampung) still exists today, life within it has changed. Children learning English integrate words and phrases into the native Malay tongue as a symbol of their knowledge of the outside world. Marriage and dating practices have changed drastically. Ong notes of her experience in Malaysia in this arena: "Almost all factory women chose their potential spouses either directly, through correspondence, or by accepting a suitor's overtures. This autonomy was directly based on their earning power, since increasingly, village women were expected to save and contribute towards their own wedding expenses and bridal furnishings (199)." Even time spent during the day has changed with schoolgirls still being expected to contribute to household work while "boys spend most of their free time in ball games, scouting, and other extracurricular activities (94)." Given the field specific language of the above observations, the work is dominated by strong cultural text often unfamiliar to the reader. Ong is presenting the conclusions of an anthropological study, and such technical terms and references dominate the diction of the work. Nevertheless, she allows for lay readers to experience the lives of otherwise distant cultures and people. In this pursuit, Ong succeeds in opening a view of globalization that would have otherwise would have been kept shut. The specialized language does not prohibit a meaningful read that has effects on a larger scale. Ong relates her study of the change of the Malay culture to the world as a whole, sparking the reader's interest in the global village. Using the oil crisis of the 1970s as another example of the influx of transnational corporations, Ong explains the connection between the Malaysian situation and the possibility of the same occurrence in another nation. "To escape mounting labor costs at home and gain market access abroad, transnational corporations headquartered in Japan, the United States, and Western Europe began to scatter labor-intensive production processes throughout the third world." The introduction of these TNCs into rural Malay life "facilitated the large-scale entry of kampung women into industrial employment," and thus changed Malay traditions and practices (145). At the same time, however, Malay women did not wish to question the overall male-dominated systems that governed over all areas of life. "They wished for an improvement in their economic position but not a social emancipation in which they would share power with men in general (193)." Ong constructs a model from her case study of Malaysia that can be applied to other nations that are faced with the introduction of TNCs. Each example drawn from Malaysia discloses pertinent information about this model, unfolding an intriguing perspective in which to evaluate world affairs. As the Malay society changed, ordinary men and women refashioned their own culture, incorporating capitalistic ideals while struggling to maintain their cultural heritage. One example is the paradox that seems to exist as women gain more independence in certain areas of their lives (e.g. dating and marriage practices), but at the same time have no wish for total social emancipation. Ong acknowledges that hantu symbolism speaks of the right for factory women to be treated as human beings and not simply as the toys of capitalism. On the global level, this calls into question whether certain cultural practices are safe to foreign intervention and whether others are susceptible to change. Ong sets out "to demonstrate how spirit attacks speak to the contemporary experiences of Malay women and their families as they make the transition from peasant society to industrial production (Preface xiii)." Spirits of Resistance and Capitalist Discipline is an integral part of any discussion of globalization due to its stress on the loss of autonomy within those effected directly by capitalism (i.e. neophyte factory women). It calls into question the basic assumptions of culture, beliefs, practices, and tradition. It forces the reader to evaluate the good of transnational corporations, and then to look at the negative effects caused by those same organizations. It pushes intellectual thought past conventional lines into an arena of intercultural sensitivity where readers can do nothing but empathize with those who must encounter spirits of resistance in the contemptuous face of capitalist discipline.
