Inner Harbor, the highly anticipated close to the story of "the lives and loves of three brothers on the windswept shores of the Chesapeake Bay" that began in Sea Swept and Rising Tides, finds Philip, the last unwed Quinn brother, juggling his high-powered advertising job and his newfound family duty of helping to care for his young adopted brother, Seth. When Dr. Sybill Griffin shows up in the sleepy town of St. Christopher, Philip makes room in his hectic schedule for the mysterious woman who stirs his senses and threatens to steal his heart. And while Sybill can't deny her own growing feelings for the charismatic Quinn, the secret connection to Seth that she hides may destroy any chance that the two young lovers have at happiness. Full of heartwarming familial moments, tender romance, and a touch of tension, Inner Harbor is an outstanding conclusion to a truly stunning trilogy.

A very pleasant read (or listen).......2006-08-11
This book, which is a part of a trilogy, doesn't let you down if you are a reader of Nora Roberts. It will make you feel good and keeps you interested with the dipiction of the main characters, three "brothers," who have been adopted after experiencing extremely difficult childhoods and develope into very exciting, exceptional adults. The trilogy is about the power of love and how it can overcome extremely difficult barriers.
Irresistible.......2006-06-06
I did not read the other books in the series, but i absolutly loved this one. I couldn't put it down for the whole 2 days it took me to finish it. It's a great story with a great theme, and you actually feel like you're there. If you like any other Nora Roberts books then you have to read this one!
Another great story.......2006-03-15
Another great Quinn story. And with an interesting twist to it too.
A wonderful ending to a wonderful series.......2006-02-10
Great story to complete the series. I like the way the new characters mix with my old favorites. The only problem is that is leaves you dieing to find out what happens to Seth. Read Chesapeake Blue to find out what happens to Seth
must read if you've read the others.......2005-09-24
This series was a nice change of pace from heavier reading. Its enjoyable. The characters are entertaining. I liked the closure by including the 4th "son's" story. Occasionally the "family rallying around" borders on hokey, but then again, this is escapism so why not be inspirational and idealistic?

Set on the windswept shores of the Chesapeake Bay, Nora Roberts's Rising Tides, the second book in the Quinn Brothers trilogy, continues the story of the lives and loves of adopted brothers Ethan, Cameron, and Philip Quinn. Eager to honor their father's dying wish that their other brother, Seth, be cared for, the three settle into life with a 10-year-old. Of all the brothers, it is Ethan who finds himself drawn to the young boy, because both suffered horrific abuse before being adopted by the Quinns. Time hasn't extinguished Ethan's pain, only buried it deep within his heart, a fact that may keep him from the only woman he has ever loved. A moving contemporary with universal appeal, Rising Tides is Nora Roberts at her best.

I really enjoyed this as I did the other ones from this series
2 WOW the second time around for a job well done on the 2nd book.......2006-02-10
Containing both emotion and power Roberts is able to portray Ethan Quinn in a fascinating way. While managing to keep in mind his patience and quiet ways, Roberts maintains the plot while still keeping readers happy and the characters thriving.

Donna's Review.......2005-09-15
This book and the whole series is truly captivating. I always look for books like this and Nora Roberts knows how to capture an audiance.
I will read nothing but Nora Roberts from now on!
Another Great One by Nora Roberts!.......2005-05-03
RISING TIDES is the second book in the Chesapeake Bay trilogy and focuses on Ethan. Ethan is the quiet brother who loves the ocean. He's the one who started the family boat-building business and not only works there, but also runs his commercial fishing boat. He's the one who tries to direct the brothers into a successful future business, but isn't afraid of the hard work involved in getting them to achieve that success.
Almost as a sub-plot is the fact that Ethan has been in love with Grace for as long as he can remember, but considers her off-limits because of a dark secret in his past. As he gently guides Seth (the newest adopted brother) into the future, he is led to accept his past by the ghost of his father and not to place blame on himself. It's an Interesting concept and very effective.
These two sub-plots are entwined, so you don't really understand which is more important until you learn the secret that is keeping Ethan from fully realizing his dreams. Once that secret is revealed, the sub-plots are merged. This sounds confusing, but is well written and flows nicely together.
This series just keeps getting better with each book! Nora Roberts shows wit, charm and romance in RISING TIDES. It's also a very different style for her (and her fans), as she's writing from a male perspective. As I was reading it, I realized I was seeing things through the eyes of Ethan, and not Grace. This writing style didn't draw me into "living" the story, but instead kept me as a very interested bystander.
This book is definitely worth reading. In fact the entire Chesapeake Bay trilogy is an excellent choice for entertainment reading.
Love it.......2005-02-09
Ethan and Grace are perfect for eachother, but It got really irritating how he thought Grace was 'delicate' and 'fragile' expecially after she is raising a daughter alone and working such hard jobs. She stood up to him and that was cool. They really flow together.

Book Description
Nora Roberts presents her #1 New York Times bestselling novel, now in paperback.
Nora Roberts returns to Chesapeake Bay and her beloved Quinn family for the story of Seth Quinn. The conclusion to the breathtaking saga.
Download Description
"Seth Quinn is finally home. It's been a long journey. After a harrowing boyhood with his drug-addicted mother, he'd been taken in by the Quinn family, growing up with three older brothers who'd watched over him with love. Now a grown man returning from Europe as a successful painter, Seth is settling down on Maryland's Eastern Shore, surrounded once again by Cam, Ethan, and Phil, their wives and children, all the blessed chaos of the extended Quinn clan. Finally, he's back in the little blue-and-white house where there's always a boat at the dock, a rocker on the porch, and a dog in the yard. Still, a lot has changed in St. Christopher since he's been gone-and the most intriguing change of all is the presence of Dru Whitcomb Banks. A city girl who's opened a florist shop in this seaside town, she craves independence and the challenge of establishing herself without the influence of her wealthy connections. In Seth, she sees another kind of challenge-a challenge that she can't resist. But storms are brewing that are about to put their relationship to the test. Dru's past has made her sensitive to deception-and slow to trust. And Seth's past has made him a target of blackmail-as a secret he's kept hidden for years threatens to explode, destroying his new life and his new love. . . ."

One of my favorites.......2007-01-31
Growing up with three brothers and no sister, I know firsthand that Nora Roberts' depictions of men is right on the mark. She is especially good at capturing brothers interacting with each and the women in their lives, which is why the Quinn Brothers series are some of my very favorite of her titles. I tend to react emotionally to books and how much I like them depends on how much I like the characters. Seth's story is one of my favorites of all her books, and probably of this series. Unlike other readers, I find Drusilla (not so crazy about her name, though) a layered character and I really enjoy watching her work to find her place in St. Chris and in a family, which she does with authenticity. Seth is great - filled with talent, and yes some ego (but most successful people are successful in some part due to their ego or confidence), but with heart and honesty, too. I love how the brothers come together to defend their own, and how the women won't and don't hide behind them, but stand with them. I think this is one of her best for its depiction of character and place. I've been reading it since it first came out and just finished again last night - can't wait to start reading it again.
Nora Roberts has an off day.......2006-06-26
This is my 3rd Nora Roberts book. I've read the first 2 in the 3 Sisters trilogy, and decided to read Chesapeake Blue while I (very eagerly) await Face the Fire in the mail. Perhaps I was spoiled by the characters, the conflicts, and the love stories in 3 Sisters, but this book pales in comparison.
The Quinns are meant to be a family whose perfect and deep love for one another is tempered by a course and affectionate manly banter. Sort of like 7th Heaven meets a beer commercial. Anyways, Seth is supremely talented, handsome, kind, and sizzling in the sack; in other words, a stock Nora Roberts male character. Alas, he is also entirely thick-headed, vain, and has the mental processes of a mule when faced with his "problem", which he only exacerbates over the course of the book. So he has a floozy of a mother who blackmails him into huge sums of money on pain of, what, her leaking a story to the press which, once she removes all the parts that reflect poorly on her, would be about 2 sentences long? And, he can't tell his troubles to his family that he loves "so" much? I mean, I wouldn't tell Cam anything myself, because he seems to deal with every moment of emotion by pitching someone off the end of a pier in a fit of manly love. But Anna and the rest seem like good candidates for a chat.
Finally, Drusilla. First, the name makes her sound like a villian in a Disney movie. Second, she is flat as a pancake, and I would pay for problems like hers. At the very end, she exhibits a spark of life, and sort of morphs into another stock Nora Roberts stock character: the sassy, smart, no-nonsense, gal who steps up to defend her man. Which, I like that character.
In my limited experience, Nora Roberts writes female friendships and falling in love brilliantly, but her male friendships need a few less put-downs and jaws clenched to supress brotherly emotion. And, I agree with the other reviewers who wanted Seth to end up with Aubrey.
Unwilling to celebrate mediocrity.......2006-06-16
For what they were, escapist and light entertainment, the first two books of Nora Roberts' Chesapeake Bay Saga were engaging, touching, charming, humorous and well-written. I enjoyed them immensely. Cam's story made you laugh and Ethan's story tugged at your heartstrings. Roberts was able to draw her readers into her created world in a way that was both tangible and emotionally satisfying. In the third book of what was originally a trilogy, however, I could feel both the author's waning interest and the strains of needing to be fresh and creative with material that was a bit too thin. The Sybill character was supremely unbelievable and we really did not find out much more about Philip Quinn than we had already learned from the first two books. We certainly were not shown a much deeper bond between Phillip and Seth. Inner Harbor was the best indicator that Roberts truly did not need to write another book about these characters. All the loose ends were tied up and nothing more needed to be said. In Chesapeake Blue, however, the author, stretches the limits of believability to the breaking point with a warmed over plot line and a romance that has all the depth of a razor blade. I don't believe in praising anything just because a popular author has written it. They can turn out rubbish as well as anyone and more's the pity since really popular authors are rarely censured or given bad reviews that might affect sales. This book starts off with a promise of a deeper emotional connection to Seth, whom we fell in love with in the first three books, but quickly degenerates into mechanical twaddle requiring the reader engage neither her intellect or feelings.
Seth Quinn, now all grown up and a talented and successful artist has returned to his boyhood home with the hint of something troubling him. We are re-introduced to all the original Quinns who now have been fruitful and multiplied and are supremely happy and successful and beautiful--right down to the very youngest. Their wives are all fulfilled outside the home with stimulating and interesting jobs --- even earth mother Grace now owns a company. And of course they are all still gorgeous and desirable after eighteen years and the sex is still hot. Nothing of interest there, so we turn to (sinister music please) Gloria DeLauter, who was menacing and eerie in Sea Swept, but has become
ridiculously cartoonish in Chesapeake Blue--the trailer-trash equivalent of Snidley Whiplash or Lord Voldemort in stilettos. Not only that, but in order to write this drivel, Ms. Roberts had to draw the character of Seth as a frightened ten-year-old living in a twenty-eight-year-old's body. This "conflict" of Seth's is utterly ludicrous given what we know of both the Quinns and of Seth's character. Roberts had already established the solidarity of the brothers Quinn in Inner Harbor. Seth had been permanently grafted into the brotherhood. (This was one facet of the book that I found both beautiful and touching.)
Now, in this book, we're expected to believe (from the background set up information) that the fourteen year old Seth, after having lived in the comfort and security of the Quinn family for three years, suddenly and inexplicably no longer felt connected enough to his brothers or confident enough in their ability to solve the problem together to tell them that his crazy mommy came back to town and was threatening to do bad things again if she didn't get more money? Hogwash. Seth has been previously portrayed as too intelligent a character to believe that Aubrey would remain safe if he didn't tell the people who could actually do something about the situation, or that his mother could reasonably go to any public venue since she was on the run from a litany of charges. I can't swallow this and I really can't buy that this nonsense is
still going on with Seth at twenty-eight. What I could have bought was something involving Seth's past--something more psychological than substantial--perhaps an emotional something from his childhood that haunts and drives him.
In my opinion, the boy Seth was far more compelling and engrossing a character than Seth the man, who should have been more carefully drawn and meticulously developed and played out against his brothers and the influences they had upon who he became. But, I imagine that the author could not be bothered to think those things through, since this book had a built in audience who would pay good money to read about Seth even if he were to sit on the Quinn porch rocking and watching paint dry--just as long as he'd get off his duff long enough to engage in a hot sex scene every few chapters.
This brings me to the romance which was so contrived as to be almost painful to read. It was badly paced and had no tension or conflict either external or internal. It read like the subplot to a more interesting story--filler material, but not strong enough to stand on its own. Drusilla Whitcomb Banks, because she is so rich, has to be written with many personal problems so she will seem more like us ordinary mortals and so that Seth can show us how sensitive and perceptive he is when he understands her. Gag. I did not like Drusilla Whitcomb Banks, not because she was rich, but because she was a shallow contrivance who had nothing in common with the hero. Even the sex was so fake it left one cold. The author made absolutely no convincing case that these two should be together. The Drusilla Whitcomb Banks character is an annoying hot house flower that was increasingly reduced to an object the more the author tried to show us readers how much Seth wanted to paint her. I did not find it sexy, I found it boring and annoying. It was an easy way for the author to toss together a romantic plot thread without having to actually think about or develop her characters in any meaningful way. And I won't get started about Seth painting Dru lying on the bed with all the red rose petals which was a sloppy copy of the well-known scene from Titanic. In Titanic there was an actual point to it and it had class. In Chesapeake Blue, there is none and it came off as cheap and trashy.
Ms. Roberts could have created a believable romance either of two ways; She could have completely redrawn Dru's character with enough depth to actually complement, play off and challenge the Seth character or she could have used Aubrey who was all around a more interesting and likable character to begin with. If Ms. Roberts wanted to truly emphasize Seth's bond to the town of St. Chris, what better way to do it than with a connection to Aubrey, who was inextricably linked to the town from the first moments we meet her in Sea Swept. The connection seems even more feasible seeing that Aubrey overshadowed Dru in every scene they were in together even when Aubrey was not given anything to say. This character literally sparkled and was so down to earth and elemental and full of life she almost jumped off the page. Depicting Seth's love of and deep connection to the town of St. Chris, to its people, to his home, his family, and a deepening understanding of what Aubrey truly meant to him, would have closed the circle nicely since Aubrey was the first person to love him unconditionally and the first person he was able to show love and affection to when he was freshly from Gloria's clutches and and still afraid to be touched by everyone else. It would have been rather sentimental, true, but far, far more satisfying than the warmed over, hacked out scraps of a story the author tossed us and expected us to swallow.
A good read to a wonderful ending of a series.......2006-02-10
I really enjoyed reading about Seth and his life. This book added so much humor to make the situations a bit more fun, especially since Seth is still young. Reading about him as a man was far better than hearing about him when he was a boy. However, a wonderful ending to a series....
Also recommended: SEASWEPT/RISING TIDES/INNER HARBOR/VILLA/BIRTHRIGHT---- WERE ALL A GOOD READ
The book felt more like the author was forced to write this book.......2005-12-31
Why is it ever time you want something bad enough it usually turns out bad? After the wonderful Quinn trilogy fans (including me) begged and begged for Nora Roberts to write Seth's story. After all we journeyed with Seth through we wanted to see him fall in love. Nora Roberts repeatedly said she would not write one. But us fans kept on begging for it and were excited when she finally gave in and wrote it. And we got Chesapeake Blue. Reading it you know you should be grateful because you wanted Seth's story but....this wasn't what I (and my fellow NR fans friends) wanted. First of all I wanted the heroine to be Aubrey. After their beautiful friendship in the Quinn trilogy I expected her to be Seth's love interest. But I tried to keep an open mind after all I loved Anna, Grace, and Sybill, but Dru Whitcomb Banks was a completely let down. All she did was whine and complain about her life which were minor compared to what Cam, Ethan, Philip, and Seth experienced as children. Seth becoming an artist was a surprise too I expected him to join the family business and design boats. The Gloria blackmailing him was a very thin and bad plotline. There's no reason Gloria would want to contact him considering all the warrents for her and that Seth wouldn't tell his family considering the Quinn Brothers (and wives)worked their so hard to keep him away from her. I closed this book vowing never to request, beg or petition an author to write a book when they say they don't want to. Because this is what you get.

The story starts out simply enough: Jess Aarons wants to be the fastest boy in the fifth grade--he wants it so bad he can taste it. He's been practicing all summer, running in the fields around his farmhouse until he collapses in a sweat. Then a tomboy named Leslie Burke moves into the farmhouse next door and changes his life forever. Not only does Leslie not look or act like any girls Jess knows, but she also turns out to be the fastest runner in the fifth grade. After getting over the shock and humiliation of being beaten by a girl, Jess begins to think Leslie might be okay.
Despite their superficial differences, it's clear that Jess and Leslie are soul mates. The two create a secret kingdom in the woods named Terabithia, where the only way to get into the castle is by swinging out over a gully on an enchanted rope. Here they reign as king and queen, fighting off imaginary giants and the walking dead, sharing stories and dreams, and plotting against the schoolmates who tease them. Jess and Leslie find solace in the sanctuary of Terabithia until a tragedy strikes and the two are separated forever. In a style that is both plain and powerful, Katherine Paterson's characters will stir your heart and put a lump in your throat.
Book Description
All summer, Jess pushed himself to be the fastest boy in the fifth grade, and when the year's first school-yard race was run, he was going to win.But his victory was stolen by a newcomer, by a girl, one who didn't even know enough to stay on the girls' side of the playground. Then, unexpectedly, Jess finds himself sticking up for Leslie, for the girl who breaks rules and wins races. The friendship between the two grows as Jess guides the city girl through the pitfalls of life in their small, rural town, and Leslie draws him into the world of imaginations world of magic and ceremony called Terabithia. Here, Leslie and Jess rule supreme among the oaks and evergreens, safe from the bullies and ridicule of the mundane world. Safe until an unforeseen tragedy forces Jess to reign in Terabithia alone, and both worlds are forever changed.
In this poignant, beautifully rendered novel, Katherine Paterson weaves a powerful story of friendship and courage.

Still Magical After All These Years ..........2007-06-27
I wasn't going to write a review after seeing how many there are on this forum! But I just have to. I read this book when I was a youngster, oh so many years ago. I bought the 25th edition several years ago because I am collecting books that are on the banned list. Plus, I wanted my sons to read it when they're older. And no, I have not seen the movie. I picked this book up again after 32 years and it is still as poignant as it was when I was a kid. I still cried as much as I did when I first read this book. I still felt the magic of Terabithia as I did as a kid. This book is timeless.
Jesse Aarons is a middle child in a family of four daughters. Quiet and morose, he dreams of being the fastest runner in the fifth grade when school starts up again. He is also a budding secret artist. What he couldn't describe in words, he painted pictures in his head and sometimes, it actually came through his fingers. There is one scene where he described how he felt when he drawed ~~ like an addiction that starts at the top of his head that flows down to his toes and he's all warm and happy. There's Leslie, daughter of priviledged writers who moved to the countryside to get out of the city. Leslie joins the school and is the fastest runner in fifth grade much to the boys' chagrin. She befriends Jesse and together, they created a kingdom of dreams and magic in the nearby woods. Tragedy strikes and Jesse discovers there's more to his family than he thought before.
It is a beautifully written novel and still incredibly touching, even read as an adult. It is a hard topic to talk about let alone read about. Paterson writes lyrically of pain and death. She writes beautifully of life and how to enjoy life to the fullest. She writes of complex relationships between friends, siblings, parents, teachers and everyone else in town. And yet, she doesn't write overbearingly ~~ just simplistic and wonderful so even the younger readers can understand. She writes of life and death and most importantly, of hope.
This is a book that will be read over and over again and hopefully, my sons will discover the magic of Paterson's book in a few years. There is magic still to be found even among death.

Lessons Galore: Grief, Financial Challenges, Compassion, Differences, Sameness, Love..........2007-06-10
Last Spring, I sat at my desk and heard my nine-year-old daughter, Emma, making some gulping sounds from the couch across the room. Then I heard some unusual, animal-type sounds from her direction. I saw the book she was holding bob up and down. I looked past the book to her face and there were tears streaming down her cheeks.
Right then she broke out in deep, heaving sobs.
We went to see the movie shortly after that - and we both sobbed, even when we knew what was coming. I think I even said, "Oh, no," aloud to the screen, as if my dismay could change the outcome.
It took me several months to have the courage to read this book - and I am glad that I finally did.
Bridge the Terabithia is the story of a young boy named Jess from a not-so-well-off family whose only dream - to be the fastest kid in school - who befriends the girl who snatches that dream away from him by running faster than any of the boys at Lark Creek School. Turns out Leslie - the girl, who moves into an old farmhouse near Jess' house - becomes one of Jess' great life teachers in more ways than one.
Together they create the magical land of Terabithia, a place in the woods that becomes a safe haven as well as a place to come to understand some things that can't be explained using "regular" terms... to "regular kids"... Jess and Leslie are neither.
This book is written, I am guessing, for fifth and sixth graders, primarily, but even younger children through adults could glean a lot from its pages. It could be seen as a simple story, but there are many layers to it.
Parents ought to read it, too, so they can discuss the variety of issues that are raised in the pages - from parents being laid off, to art and music, to understanding and compassion, to dealing with difficult siblings and how to get along with others.
Excellent read.
I really Love the book Bridge to Terabithia .......2007-05-24
It started when Jess Oliver Aarons Jr. became best friends with his new neighbor, Leslie Burke. Together Leslie and Jess teach each other new things everyday, and build a strong friendship.
Jess wanted to be the fastest kid in the fifth grade. He would get up early every morning to run. Winning the race and being the fastest kid all changed when Leslie came and raced with the boys. Leslie took over and won the race. She proved she was the fastest in the fifth grade and everybody was shocked.
As Leslie and Jess became closer friends, they decided they needed a place of their own. After school one day, they headed into the forest to find a place. They came across a river with a rope above it; they crossed the rope to find an old tree house. This would now be their own secret place, and they called it Terabithia.
One day Jess came home and found that his parents were worried and his mom had been crying. He had no clue what had happened until his father spoke up. His father told him that there had been an unfortunate thing happen to his friend Leslie.
I really enjoyed reading this book because it has a lot of character. There are many things mixed in one: sorrow, happiness, and some humor. I would recommend this book to anyone, boy or girl.
luke.......2007-05-22
I thought it was a really good book. But it was really sad when Leslie died. Although it kind of worked out because it taught Jess to use his imagination. He opened up more and I guess just taught him it doesn't matter what other people think just do what you want to do.
Love it.......2007-05-20
I was taken by surprise at the end, so sad...but loved this book.

The central scene of Michener's historical novel is that section of Maryland's Eastern shore, hardly more than 10 miles square. To this point come the founders of families that will dominate the story.

A first time read of a Michener Novel.......2007-05-13
This is the first book I read by Michener; I couldn't put it down, and I didn't--read the whole book cover to cover straight through. This is the book that instilled my interest in James Michener's Books.
My First Michener.......2007-03-12
I've always been put off by the length of Michener's novels, but when a near relative so enthusiastically recommended this book, I decided to give it a try. Well! I have to say that I thoroughly, completely enjoyed every page. Michener's style is so simple, so clean, almost innocent in his delivery, and yet his characters are vivid and believable. Michener touches many deep interests: a love for American history, a quest for theological and ethical truth, ecological preservation, and the poignancy of many great lives and places vanished away in time. Near the end of the saga, as Michener brought me to stand in the midst of a run-down trailer park, remembering the beautiful marsh filled with wildlife that once flourished there, I was surprised at the sadness and regret I felt. Powerful! I'll be reading more of him.
Makes you proud to be a Marylander.......2007-02-28
Very good book. Some parts were a little dry but it still can easily be read from cover to cover. Sail the Chesapeake with pirates, learn about Coastal Indians and watch a family build an Empire. A fun read from a master of adventure.
Another Great Michener epic!.......2006-11-24
I wasn't sure where Chesapeake Bay was when I started this book. I knew it was somewhere on the east coast but didn't realize it was so geographically big. I also didn't realize so many of the big cities that I've heard of is located on or near the Chesapeake Bay. So for me this made the book quite interesting. Once again with Micheners characteristic trademark, he starts the earliest Indians. It was interesting to read that while some Indians were violent some were passive. This makes sense; it would be really hard to generalize about such a big population. Some may find the beginning of Micheners epics slow; certainly this book is no exception. But what I really like is how the last third of the book will some how reference an event or character from the previous part. The pirate aspect of the Chesapeake is interesting; but what captivates is the civil war and the statues of African Americans. We tend to forget at one time that even good people had misconceptions. Much like the Afrikaners in Micheners "The Covenant," I liked these hard working white people; I just didn't like their attitude or treatments of Blacks. The introduction of the Quakers was a bonus for me , as I am unfamiliar with there practices and beliefs. It was also an ironic twist that Michener included a Watergate plot near the end this really brought it into the modern times. So from the earliest Indians to Watergate this book should not fail to interest every reader.
Epic in true Michener fashion.......2006-10-18
CHESAPEAKE centers on the Chesapeake Bay, particularly the Maryland portion and spans the years 1583 to 1978 resulting in a novel of the epic style that Michener does so well.
As the story follows the various residents of the Bay regions, the Indian tribes that were present when the first colonists arrived, the various colonists and settlers and their descendents to the 'present day' (when the novel was published). Michener tells his story of the region by following a few families ranging from the English Catholic gentry and indentured servants who originally settled the area, the Quakers and blacks who came later, followed by the Irish. As the various stories of these families is told the history of the region is also revealed from the struggling early colonies, through the lavish days of the plantations and into the present day.
This is a true epic - 1083 pages in length - and is divided into 14 voyages spread out over the years and includes more than enough material to write a series of a dozen books. This is not a quick read to finish in a few hours. This one will consume a week or more but is well worth the time. The characters are compelling, the situations they find themselves in are interesting and well written. As always Michener has done his research about the area and times quite thoroughly.

Very satisfied.......2007-04-06
Came in a very timely manner and in perfect condition (as advertised). Thank you.
I Buy Every Edition.......2007-02-13
Since I began boating, I've purchased each edition of the ADC chartbook for the Chesapeake Bay. Its size is convenient versus full-size NOAA charts, it covers the whole bay with insets for major ports, the planning map is a more than decent road map, and its other features are well thought-out. The Maptech Chesapeake chartbook is even more thorough and gives the same scale as the NOAA charts (1:80,000 rather than 1:40,000 for ADC) and will be more useful for some sailors, but it is twice the size and more than twice the cost. I use both: the ADC for general voyaging and the Maptech for areas which are critical (shallow water, narrow channels, submerged hazards).
No legend on each chart.......2006-12-25
My feelings are the same as the other writers, but I will add one thing that bugs me the most. There is no distance scale on the charts. In order to see the distance measurement you must turn to the early pages of the book and find it on the one page that has it. I like having the distance scale on each chart. (Granted all charts except insets are the same scale, but when I am making a quick assessment of distance I want to see a scale not work from memory).
I now buy the cruising chart collections from a different company which come in two parts, one for Maryland, one for Virginia. Not waterproof but come with a plastic cover. (In 30+ yrs of sailing I find waterproof charts unnecessary anyway.)
Ok, but could be much better........2006-11-18
Good for general planning, but you need real charts. The criticism about it being too small is true. But the biggest problem I have with the book is that a small section of the chart is missing at the center of each chart. Where you have to turn a page to get to the next chart, there is an overlap as there should be. But down the center, where the fold would be if it was not spiral bound, you are missing a small slice of chart. What are the odds that there is something really significant in that 1/4" inch or so? It doesn't really matter, it's a pretty big mistake by the publishers that should have been caught in my opinion.
Good but not the best chartbook.......2006-09-24
The content is comprehensive. This chartbook will get you from the bottom of the Conawego dam to the Atlantic, but take a hard look at the dimensions. But it is small, and while there are a handful of useful insets those that are of places you'd actually want to take your boat are minute. The whole western shore in the region of Anapolis gets essentially 1 page. along with a tiny inset of anapolis harbor itself. But great gunkhole anchorages like the West river only have about 10 cm^2 of chart space.
The waterproofing is handy, so you will have it forever, but you might think hard about shelling out an extra 60 dollars for something bigger from another vendor.

Sibling trilogies are fast becoming Nora Roberts's forte. Sea Swept tells the tale of three brothers--all former juvenile delinquents adopted by Raymond Quinn and his wife, Stella. Cameron, Ethan, and Philip are as different as can be, but they are bound by their love and respect for their adoptive father, who has recently passed away. On his deathbed he asks his sons to look after their most recent brother, 10-year-old Seth, who--if the rumors are to believed--just may be Ray's biological son. Of course, the brothers don't know anything about caring for the young boy, and if social worker Anna Spinelli has anything to say about it, they won't. However, the sparks that fly over the fate of Seth are nothing compared to the romantic sparks that fly between Anna and Cameron. Nora Roberts once again proves why she is the premiere author of 1990s contemporary romance. Her stories have universal appeal, and Sea Swept is no exception.

Fascinating String Figures.......2006-08-04
A very good book, however it is best if you are familiar with making string figures as this is a book for the advanced string enthusiast.
Great Book, Lousy Audio.......2006-07-21
I loved this book when it first came out, so when I was looking for an audiobook for a long trip, I got this one. Unfortunately I found the narrator spoke so slowly and in such a monotone that he almost put me to sleep. Rather than attempting different voices for the characters, he simply raised and lowered his voice. I found some of his "characterizations" so affected sounding, that I had to put the book away. As he also narrates the next book in the Quinn saga, I guess I won't be listening to this series in the future. I would give the book 5 stars, but took away 2 for the lousy audio version
Wonderful! Very interesting and funny! one of my all time favourites!.......2006-05-30
I have read Nora roberts before but not many and those earlier that i have read hasn't impressed me much because of that i read her books rarely, only when i am recommended any book like this one.i am so glad i picked this one because this was great!
The best part about this book was how these four guys handle living together which was not very well but very funny indeed! Their fights especially Cam's and Philip's were hilarious. I liked Philips very much, can't wait to read 'inner Harbour' now that contains his story but i guess i would go by the series and read 'rising tides' first.
How these two men handle a ten year old boy was very touching. You just can not treat a ten year old as a kid and these men never did. They somehow knew how being treated like a kid at Seth's age felt. they treated him as their equal and when he needed to be reminded of his age they did tell him,'You are only ten, get real!'.
I could feel Seth's insecurites and doubts and felt like crying myself when he cried overwhelmed by emotions when he saw these three men standing up for him. this was a emotional tale but it never got mushy. Even the romance never got too sweet which was a good thing because i know how you get bored always reading those mushy scenes in romance novels.
Anna was great! She was gorgeous and straight forward and never tried to hide her attraction toward Cam, never played games and never acted shy, in short she was every guys dream woman.
This is first trilogy i have read from Nora roberts and i am impressed and i will be going for more soon.
Good Story, but a bit overshadowed by an ethical quandary (Some spoilers).......2006-04-27
Don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed this book and am looking forward to the other two books in the trilogy, but as I read the book, I had this continual, nagging problem in my head over the relationship between Cam and Anna. It just is not ethical. There is no way a social worker cannot be swayed in judgement when she is having a relationship with someone she is investigating as a guardian for a child. Throughout the book, Anna makes excuses like "you can't be my lover during work hours". It just would not fly....she would find herself out of a job and lose any credibility she might have, not to mention the detriment she would cause to the boy if the man she is sleeping with turned out to be dangerous and her opinion of him was swayed by her attraction.

Indispensible.......2007-01-04
Not to be trite, but this book is an absolute must for anyone who seriously cruises Chesapeake Bay including its approaches. Superb detail and illustrations compliment a clear, carefully worded text. I have and use two other cruising guides for additional information but always start and end with this book.
The very best guide for the gunkholer.......2006-09-25
I have two copies of the 2001 edition: one aboard my sailboat in Annapolis and the second in my office. Most of my use of the book has been in the middle Chesapeake. In crawling up and down the Magothy, Severn, South, West, Rhode, Chester, Wye, and Tred Avon Rivers this book has provided helpful insight into what I would find. This book and the Maptech chart book are all you need to find your way to and through the backwaters of the Chesapeake.
Cruisers.......2006-03-17
We have a power boat but found this book to be very informative & helpful. We are planning our trip, have not been to the Chesapeake in about 25 years, and have found this book the best yet in our preparations. We like to anchor out and this book is informative not specifically focusing jumping from marina to marina like many guides do.
Wanna-be gunkholer happy with this book:-).......2002-04-24
In addition to telling you where facilities, anchorages, and other interesting local points of interest are, he supplies invaluable lessons only learned in the school of hard knocks. Valuable mariner lessons were included on weather prediction, inlet navigation, and other techniques tailored to use in the Chesapeake bay. The book was very well done, and I hope to set off on a cruise in the very near future.
Excellent book.......2001-02-19

A LIFE CHANGING READ.......2007-05-29
Growing up in Northern Virginia I always had a vague sense of the crab's popularity, both for dining and as a sort of a local mascot for people who live near the Bay. However, I had only eaten them at my aunt's house in Benedict, MD. and thought them to be strange and hard to eat. They made me feel inferior some how not knowing the technique and how exactly my aunt was able to come up with these bushels during the warm summer months. I dedicated last summer to learning all about the Bay and the blue crab and the wonderful people who make a living off them. I was transformed with the knowledge from the book that explains so many details about the life of the crab, the watermen and their families. The author is so creative with the insights he reveals. After reading this book, I am equipped to speak intelligently about the geographical areas, crab industry and most importantly-how to get and eat these beautiful swimmers!
Attention to Detail.......2006-06-03
Whereas I found this book to be quite informative, the author's attention to detail about every aspect and apparatus of a waterman's life on the Cheasapeake Bay to be a bit much. I found it difficult to find interest in how many eel baits were used on a trotline and how close together they were spaced. Not being well versed on the parts of various fishing vessels, I found myself lost as to what the author was writing about not to mention the numerous detailed descriptions of every piece of fishing apparatus employed by watermen.
Beautiful Swimmers.......2005-08-18
Beautiful Swimmers was given to me by a relative mixed in with a number of Bay-related books(including Tom Horton's Island Out of Time and several others).
Often, environmental writers stand the risk of in a way reducing the Bay to merely some sort of ecological experiment. Some I have read do not take into account that every little change in the Bay, whether the fault of Mother Nature or ourselves, drastically affects the people whose entire livelihood is fished out of these waters. Fortunately, the author(s) of Beautiful Swimmers does not fall into that trap.
The Watermen have a unique love affair with the Blue Crab. As evidenced by my own home town's "Hard Crab Derby" celebration ever year. This book, I think, gives a very fair and honest portrayal of these seemingly simple people with seemingly simple lives. Its handling of carcinological matters is anything but boring, including an in-detail description of how the crabs make love.
I would highly suggest this work not only for its informative value but for its treatment of the inherant poetry and beauty of the Bay. Even at the time of its publishing, the downward trend in the Bay's health was growing more evident. Today the situation is even more precarious, and requires a very delicate balance between the health of the Bay that supports so many and the people themselves, whose lives have been spent gleaning from these once bountiful waters an income, and who keep alive the traditions of Watermen from over four centuries ago.
Let us protect the Bay, this precious resource of ours, but we must not forget about the people.
Once again, an exceptional book, and one that I recommend for anyone interested in the Conservation of the Chesapeake Bay and the people that depend upon it.
Entertaining and Educational.......2005-01-03
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I spent summers as a kid catching crabs and seeing commercial crabbers outside my grandparents' home but there was a lot about the industry and the bay that I didn't know. I felt like an eavesdropper on an unfamiliar yet familiar world as I read this book, and found my curiousity awakened. The writers clear appreciation for his subject shines through, and it is a delight to discover even many years after it was written.
It Takes You There...........2004-11-16
Beautiful Swimmers will make you feel like you are a part of growing up in the Chesapeake Bay region. If you already did so, it will bring you back home.
Beautiful Swimmers serves as excellent literature for a multitude of readers: naturalists, historians, travellers, and folks who enjoy reading a good novel. It also provides a good blend of natural and cultural resource history.
I moved to the Chesapeake Bay area (Deale, MD) several years ago and was referred to Beautiful Swimmers by several members of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. Prior to reading Beautiful Swimmers, I grew extremely fond of living on the bay. Since reading the book, I have that much more appreciation for the culture of the bay.
