Product Description
Follow the progress of a hungry little caterpillar as he eats until he is full and forms a cocoon around himself and goes to sleep.
Amazon.com Reviews
"In the light of the moon a little egg lay on a leaf." So begins Eric Carle's modern classic, The Very Hungry Caterpillar. More than 12 million copies of this book have been sold in its original, full-sized edition, and the beloved tale of science and gluttony has been translated into 20 languages. This five-by-four-inch miniature edition is truly tiny, with tiny type, but it is a nice size for small hands to hold and flip through the pictures. Despite its diminished state, the book is complete in every detail, following the ravenous caterpillar's path as he eats his way through one apple (and the pages of the book itself) on Monday, two pears on Tuesday, three plums on Wednesday, and so on, through cherry pie and sausage--until he is really fat and has a stomachache. And no doubt you know what happens next! Kids love butterfly metamorphosis stories, and this popular favorite teaches counting and the days of the week, too. A fun gift package for caterpillar fans. (Baby to preschool) --Karin Snelson
Customer Reviews:
Great story - inappropriate illustrations.......2007-06-16
For a child under 3 the illustrations are too abstract. For example the egg on a leaf looks like nothing! A young child needs clearer, more vivid illustrations. My baby (1 year) loves the pictures in her other books but so far, this book is good only for chewing! With the exception of the Saturday diet (icecream, cake, salami etc). I'm hopeful that when she gets older she'll enjoy the book more.
The Fabulous Eric Carle -- essential for every home with children!.......2007-06-02
We love this book- and ALL of his books!! When children are read to daily, they learn to love reading. And there's usually a life lesson to be learned in these sweet little books (like eating too much cake and candy can give you a TUMMY ACHE!) If you can find the LARGE size board book get it- they're fabulous keepsakes. Perfect gifts for any child, and a perfect tradition in your own home and family!
Real joy.......2007-05-24
Eric Carle is the favorite author for me and my daughter. His illustrations are lovely and just perfect for the stories. I enjoy reading his books to my child again and again. It is a real joy for a parent.
This is very simple reading about a caterpillar who eats throughout a whole week. Children love the brightly colored pictures on each page and repetitive phrases in this book. This book belongs to each child's household. For a little older kids I highly recommend Why Some Cats are Rascals, Book 1. Check also Love You Forever, Corduroy, The Giving Tree
Great book.......2007-05-23
This is a very cute book and we have other books from Mr. Carle.
Home library essential.......2007-05-13
This book belongs in every home library. And it must be the board book, as there are many little holes in the pages that little fingers MUST be put into. We always give this as a gift to first time parents.
The story is a great intro to the natural world as well as counting and identifying many foods. THe story has so much to teach! The art work is fascinating as well! Check out Eric Carle's other books as well. You are sure to find many more to love.

Based on the popular bedtime story Guess How Much I Love You, My Baby Book is a delightful way to record and cherish the important events of your baby's first two years. Big Nutbrown Hare and Little Nutbrown Hare return to scamper through the pages, adding just the right touch of whimsy to this charming scrapbook. Divided into sections such as "Up and About" and "On Vacation," the book is enhanced by the well-known declarations of Little Nutbrown Hare. "Guess how often I fell over! Oops-a-daisy!" he says, balancing himself on a tree stump under "My First Step." Anita Jeram's soft watercolors and expressive line drawings are truly heartwarming without ever being saccharine, and the baby-book section ideas are refreshingly innovative. With ample room to record everything from baby's height and weight to the price of a newspaper on the date of baby's birth, and plenty of space to add photographs, My Baby Book is one of the best available. --Aimee Damann
Book Description
The American Booksellers Book of the Year nominee is available as a sturdy board book for the youngest of children. Little Nutbrown Hare wants to show Big Nutbrown Hare how very much he loves him - but love as big as his is very hard to measure!

its ok.......2007-06-06
this is a cute book, but my son isn't really interested in it and its kind of long for him. i don't think we ever get though the whole thing, he loses interest and we move on to another book.
To the moon and back-- what's not to love???.......2007-06-02
We love this book!! When I tell my (now 5 1/2 y/o) son I love him to the moon and back- he replies that he loves me to PLUTO and back. He loves space and science, and he loves reading at nighttime especially. If you can find the LARGE size board book get it- they're fabulous keepsakes. Kids learn to enjoy reading when you read to them every night- make it a tradition in your family!
Beautiful.......2007-05-24
That's the most beautiful book for a young child that I know of. It perfectly expresses the mother's love. I enjoy reading it every night before my daughter goes to bed. I started to read it to her over a year ago when she was only two years old, and now she can read it with me. It has created a special bond between us. I highly recommend this book to any loving mother. In addition to that I also recommend a book series titled "Why Some Cats are Rascals ( Book 3)" containing lovely and inspiring stories for older children. My other recommendations go to:
Love You Forever
The Giving Tree
Corduroy
The first book I ever bought for my daughter..........2007-04-23
My daughter loves this book, and I must admit I love reading it to her before bed time. The illustrations are beautiful as well. I usually get a little misty eyed at the end, but I am a big softy after all...
VERY CUTE!!!.......2007-04-17
I love reading this book to my daughter and telling her how much I love her. Great book!!!

Book Description
For would-be entrepreneurs, innovation managers or just anyone fascinated by the special chemistry and drive that created some of the best technology companies in the world, this book offers both wisdom and engaging insights—straight from the source.
— Chris Anderson, editor-in-chief of Wired Magazine, and author of The Long Tail
"All the best things that I did at Apple came from (a) not having money and (b) not having done it before, ever." —Steve Wozniak, Apple
Founders at Work: Stories of Startups' Early Days is a collection of interviews with founders of famous technology companies about what happened in the very earliest days. These people are celebrities now. What was it like when they were just a couple friends with an idea? Founders like Steve Wozniak (Apple), Caterina Fake (Flickr), Mitch Kapor (Lotus), Max Levchin (PayPal), and Sabeer Bhatia (Hotmail) tell you in their own words about their surprising and often very funny discoveries as they learned how to build a company.
Where did they get the ideas that made them rich? How did they convince investors to back them? What went wrong, and how did they recover?
Nearly all technical people have thought of one day starting or working for a startup. For them, this book is the closest you can come to being a fly on the wall at a successful startup, to learn how it's done.
But ultimately these interviews are required reading for anyone who wants to understand business, because startups are business reduced to its essence. The reason their founders become rich is that startups do what businessesdo—create value—more intensively than almost any other part of the economy. How? What are the secrets that make successful startups so insanely productive? Read this book, and let the founders themselves tell you.
Customer Reviews:
Great book but can be better if few interviews are removed and added........2007-06-27
Great book. Good questions asked by Livingston. Few of the articles were boring and could be replaced with better person.
Real advice from the frontline trenches of software start-ups.......2007-06-04
The Summary
Jessica Livingston has written an amazing book. If you want to read the stories behind some of the most well known software companies in the last 30 years, you will find it in this book. But Livingston hasn't just covered the usual suspects (Google, Microsoft), she has included a diverse collection from Steve Wozniak (Apple) to David Heinemeier Hansson (37 Signals), Dan Bricklin (Visicalc) to Blake Ross (Firefox). It covers a lot of ground from the early 80's software boom to the Web 2.0 starts ups. But there is more than just stories about starting companies, there is real advice from the frontline trenches of software start-ups. Keep your post-it notes and highlighter handy, if you are like me you will be annotating and highlighting a lot!
The Audience
If you have ever considered a start-up you should definitely read this book. It's like picking the brains of some very experienced entrepreneurs. Anybody that has already tried their hand at start-ups will recognize the value of this book. Most will probably feel like I did, and wish that they had had this book before they started their first company. It could have saved me many painful lessons (both financially and personally). Reading these interviews is like having 32 mentors.
The Details
Like many people I am always a little skeptical of `success stories'. Just because someone did x, y and z, doesn't mean that I could follow these very steps and be as successful. Just because Aunt Ethel, who lived to be a 100, attributes her long life to drinking a glass of whisky every day, doesn't mean I can drink a glass of whisky every day and live to be a 100. Instead of a collection of fluffy `creation myth' stories written about software companies, Livingston has put a lot of thought into how she approached these interviews and has collected some real gems of insights from these entrepreneurs. She has uncovered a gold mine of valuable advice and information about starting a company. As you read these stories you start to see some patterns emerging. Some of these patterns I recognize from my own experiences, but others were new to me. Sometimes you see contradictory advice from different founders; one tells you, you need to focus on the technology and somebody else explains that it's more important to focus on business/market opportunity. There are definitely multiple paths to starting a company, but some advice is repeated story after story, and these seem to be universal truths.
The Ideas
Here are some of the universal truths that I culled from the interviews:
- Iterate through ideas, the first idea isn't always the best
- Business plans are important - but be prepared to change it many times
- You need to be naïve - "unencumbered by reality"
- Persistence makes all the difference
- Passion - you need to be really excited about what you are doing and think it's really important
- Understand and listen to your end users
The book is full of ideas and advice like this.
The Take-Aways
Overall, I can't say enough good things about this book. Obviously it's aimed at entrepreneurs, but I know there are going to be many people just interested in the stories behind their favorite companies or people. Personally I loved the interviews with Ray Ozzie, Joel Spolsky, Joe Kraus and Steve Wozniak. I was also fascinated by the stories behind companies like: 37 Signals, Six Apart, del.icio.us and Craigslist. I was even surprised by the story behind `Hot or Not', it's not as shallow as you might think.
Entrepreneurs -- wanna-be, new and experienced -- you NEED to read, think, digest and act on the advice in this book and your next/current entrepreneurial venture will go much smoother.

1 book many autobiographies.......2007-06-03
A good book . Holds a lot of information about how start ups did what they did.
Some of the stuff that these founders went through was good to read. Shows that they are not all super men but men with super dreams.
A casual Sunday evening - lie by the pool - sip on a lemonade kind of book !
Chicken Soup for the Entrepreneur's Soul.......2007-05-15
This compendium of interviews with tech founders is a must for every tech entrepreneur's bookshelf. Whether you are on your first startup or your seventh, you will find something in the experience of others to help you avoid mistakes, take advantage of your opportunities, or just commiserate about the challenges and frustrations of getting something started. Full of wisdom and humor, a great read for those who want to become a tech entrepreneur, or find themselves in the middle of it already.
Excellent collection of dialogues.......2007-05-12
"Founders at Work" is an excellent book containing interviews between the author and many successful entrepreneurs. The "founders" share stories and lessons about their prior startups. I enjoyed reading about PayPal, RIM, Hotmail, Adobe, Excite, Del.icio.us, and many other companies.
Among the things I'll take to heart:
- Do something you're passionate about
- Find a solid team to work with, even if just a single partner
- Don't be afraid to start a company even if you have no ideas
- Getting money from VCs is not necessarily important. It can help and hurt.

This book should be in every vet's waiting room.......2007-06-25
Found this book in the veterinary ER waiting room the night we took in our 16 year old dog, and had to put her down. My 8 year old son couldn't stay in the exam room while they did the procedure, but found this book and read it out loud to me while it was happening, and then went into the room afterwards and read it to his dad and 2 sisters. I was so impressed I bought us a copy for my pastor-husband's office, and then 2 more copies for family members who responded to my email about losing our dog and my son reading this book to the family. I cannot say how much this helped our family.
AMAZING GRACE!.......2007-06-08
What a wonderful book and is a great comfort to anyone who has lost a pet. I love the artwork and the concept of Pets in Heaven!
great.......2007-05-13
it is a a very good book to help cope with the loss of adog. i helped me very much.
Dog Heaven.......2007-04-03
I received this book many years ago from a friend when I had lost a dog. I have read it many times for comfort. On Feb. 19, 2007, we had to let our dog Boomer go. It was one of the hardest things I have had to do. After a few weeks of total depression, I decided to honor Boomer's life with "Boomer's Book Club". I ordered many copies of this book along with Cat Heaven and sent to people I met on a petloss chat room that I felt needed it. It is just one of those books that will find a special place in your home and the perfect gift for a person in the sad time after the loss of a pet. A must have for all pet lovers!
Helped with healing.......2007-03-23
This book was sent to me by the specialty veterinary hospital where my beloved dog died. They used the book as a sympathy card of sorts, and wrote personal notes to us expressing condolences. The book is so sweet and touching-I think it would be excellent in helping a child deal with pet loss, because it certainly helped this forty-something year old.

Book Description
If food dropped like rain from the sky, wouldn't it be marvelous! Or would it? It could, after all, be messy. And you'd have no choice. What if you didn't like what fell? Or what if too much came? Have you ever thought of what it might be like to be squashed flat by a pancake?

Customer Reviews:
Another Great Sandra Boynton Book.......2007-05-28
My children love this book. It is a fun way to reinforce and teach your children what the barnyard animals are. You can actually "Clap your hands", "Stomp your feet" and act out most of the motions represented in the book. It can be hilarious! This book is fabulous! ENJOY!
Barnyard Dance.......2007-05-26
My family and I love this book. We have small grandchildren and we live on a farm, a perfect combination with which to enjoy this book. When the greater family gathers we love to get out the book, one of us reads it and the others do the Barnyard Dance! We pretend we're what ever the animals are that are mentioned and dance up a storm. The little ones are delighted to have us join them and we all have a good time through the wonderful imagination of Sandra Boynton. I frequently include this book as part of a baby gift explaining how our family uses it.
The Cutest Book..........2007-04-09
This book has great poetry and flow. I loved it so did my two year old twins.
A lot of fun!.......2007-03-28
My little boy loves this book and it is very interactive with clapping and stomping!
Great author!.......2007-01-26
As a teacher and a mom I have been through hundreds (if not more) children's books. Sandra Boynton is by far one of my favorites authors!. If you have young kids these books are for you. My 2 y/o daughter loves and has memorized all of her books! The only one I don't like is "Dogs" because it is annoying for me to read, but my daughter loves it anyway.
My favorites are
The Going to Bed Book
Moo Baa LaLaLa
The Belly Button Book
Hippo's Go Beserk
Barnyard Dance

What else can be said about the fabulous Ferdinand? Published more than 50 years ago (and one of the bestselling children's books of all time), this simple story of peace and contentment has withstood the test of many generations. Ferdinand is a little bull who much prefers sitting quietly under a cork tree-- just smelling the flowers--to jumping around, snorting, and butting heads with other bulls. This cow is no coward--he simply has his pacifist priorities clear. As Ferdinand grows big and strong, his temperament remains mellow, until the day he meets with the wrong end of a bee. In a show of bovine irony, the one day Ferdinand is most definitely not sitting quietly under the cork tree (due to a frightful sting), is the selfsame day that five men come to choose the "biggest, fastest, roughest bull" for the bullfights in Madrid.
Ferdinand's day in the arena gives readers not only an education in the historical tradition of bullfighting, but also a lesson in nonviolent tranquility. Robert Lawson's black-and-white drawings are evocative and detailed, with especially sweet renditions of Ferdinand, the serene bull hero. The Story of Ferdinand closes with one of the happiest endings in the history of happy endings--readers of all ages will drift off to a peaceful sleep, dreaming of sweet-smelling flowers and contented cows.
Book Description
A true classic with a timeless message, The Story of Ferdinand has enchanted readers since it was first published in 1936. All the other bulls would run and jump and butt their heads together. But Ferdinand would rather sit and smell the flowers. So what will happen when our pacifist hero is picked for the bullfights in Madrid? This new edition contains the complete original text of the story and the original illustrations with watercolor tones added.

Flowers for Ferdinand.......2007-01-18
The Story of Ferdinand is a fun story about a bull who refuses to fight. There's nothing wrong with him--he just doesn't like violence and he does like flowers, which represent non-violent things. It's a great story for retelling by children.

Excellent book!.......2007-05-13
This book helped to reinforce what I had already taught my 4-year-old son. He asked questions that he hadn't previously asked and opened up new discussion about the topic. It's well-written, common sense approach makes it easy for pre-schoolers to understand. The author is a therapist, which made me feel confident about the quality of the content.
We love this book........2007-05-12
My son and I read this book a couple of times a week. He even tells me now what he thinks is a "good touch" and a "bad touch". I recommend this to all parents!
Very informative and Easy to Understand for kids.......2007-01-05
I don't think it's an Easy subject for parents to talk to their kids about, So this book opened the subject up for me. It's hard to talk about, But an Absolute Must in the World Today. It talked about bad touch and Good touch like tickles, then the mom told her son a story about a little girl. The story was a Real Life possibility because it was a neighbor asking a little girl if she liked Kittens (what kid doesn't right?)then he asked her if she wanted to come see them at his house. The book states " since she knew this person she went with him" giving you the opening to explain it's not just strangers that can hurt you. The man wanted her to sit on his lap, then he tried to put his hand in her [...], she ran home and told her mom. Then the guy got in trouble. The mom telling the story to her son Then talks about it to him so he knows to tell her if something happens. Then they get into talk about what is Private on your body.... So here's on thing I wasn't Comfortable with.... The book has an illistration of the mom and son looking at a book, and their book has a picture of a little boy and girl naked so they can identify "private Parts". EASY FIX, My husband Took a Marker and Drew a pair of underwear on the little boy So it wouldn't be an issue. So you could just draw a bathing suit on the little girl, or underwear on the little boy If you're not ready for those pics if you have younger kids.
Overall the illistration are Great, not Scary, and just draw some underwear on the naked pic if you're uneasy about that. I would Buy this Book for any kid getting ready to Go to School or a Friends house.
Helping parents raise an awkward but important issue with their young children.......2006-09-13
In my experience, young children are profoundly intuitive. That is to say, they `know' some things by means other than personal experience or having been instructed or shown.
Their intuition is, ordinarily, most sensitive to their parents and, therefore, young children learn to know certain things without their ever being explicitly mentioned. This can be a problem. For example, children sometimes learn, by parental omission and/or avoidance, things that are NOT OK to talk about. Not infrequently, these subjects are the ones the parents, themselves, would have the most difficulty discussing with their children. With older kids (early teens) `sex' is the most famous of these issues. Mom says to Dad, "Have you had `the' talk with Johnny yet, dear?" Dad is concerned about their 13 year-old daughter Mary and asks mom, "Honey, have you had `the' talk with Mary yet?" Sex: awkward subject matter for many parents to address with children. I recall my own experience when at 12 or 13, my father sat me down and with a very straight and somber face, looked me in the eye and asked me, "Son, do you know where babies come from?" Having grown up on the streets of Boston, I said, "Sure!" My dad looked immediately relieved and said, simply, "Good.... Glad to hear it." That was the end of our `talk' and he never again broached the subject with me.
Licensed Clinical Social Worker Sandy Kleven's important book being reviewed here brings parents a tool that can be used to raise one of the most difficult aspects of sexual activity with young kids (3-7 years old) - that of sexual abuse.
Time have changed - or at least they seem to have. News stories about young children being inappropriately touched by adults are not as uncommon as they used to be. Is there more of it going on? Or, is the media simply reporting it more often. Reporting laws across the country usually mandate adults having professional contact with kids to report, in writing, any `suspicion' of sexual abuse to the appropriate public authority, most usually the local County's Children's Protective Services unit. Whether it is the prevalence of the activity that has increased or simply the open reporting of it when it does happen (most likely a combination of both) it remains one of the most difficult areas for parents to helpfully educate their children about. Part of the education is to do it in a way that conveys to the child that this is not only just OK to talk about if something should happen - but that the parents WANT them to tell them about it! That they will not get into trouble for telling.
Kids also need to learn that there are different kinds of touching. Some OK, and some not. This wonderfully illustrated (by Jody Bergsma) short (30 pages) book talks about that and related issues in a way that makes the reading to a child of it by a parent a natural, relaxed and nearly matter-of-fact activity: Not unlike reading a "Potty" book to child being readied to stop using diapers. The key value of this nicely and simply written book is that it encourages and invites talk between the child and parent if/when something questionable or untoward should occur in this area.
I have heard some parents contend that teaching about this should be the job of the schools. There are, in fact in many communities, school based programs dealing with Sexual Abuse - but I would contend that those activities need be secondary to a child's feeling of open permission to tell his/her own parent about having been wrongly treated or touched.
The language and visuals are entirely age appropriate for preschoolers and early primary grade children - and one reading of it with your own child will tell them that this is an OK think to talk about and will go a long way toward countering the power of the threats child abusers frequently make: Telling the children it is their secret and they mustn't ever tell anyone. This would be, in fact, the worse thing that could happen.
You and your child may never need this book - but exposing yourself and him/her to it together cannot help but reinforce the trusting nature that most children naturally have toward their parents - especially with information about something that just doesn't feel right.
Browse through a bookstore and read it - You will see what I mean. Buy it and use it - Your child and you, as a parent, will benefit from it.
This Book Has Just the Right Touch.......2005-03-24
An excellent, pro-active tool to help families empower themselves regarding child molestation. The text is gentle and direct and the illustrations are flowing and visually soothing. This book has the right touch of intelligence, compassion and clarity that is needed to discuss this very serious topic.
I like the way Jimmy's mother has night time chats with her son; she uses this time for roundtable discussions on what constitutes a "good touch" or a "bad touch" and that anything involving force, lying and sadness are all indicators of "bad touches." One important point this book includes is that bad touches are NOT always done by strangers. This is truly one of the best books on the subject and one that will certainly make for a more safety-savvy environment.
I recommend this book together with Cornelia Spelman's book, "Your Body Belongs to You," Linda Walvoord Girard's "My Body is Private" and Peter Alsop's gentle song, "My Body" on "Songs on Sex & Sexuality." These are invaluable works that are geared specifically for families.

Want a Good Start on an Education?.......2005-02-06
"Caesar and Christ" is the third thick volume of an amazing 45-year life work by Will Durant. I strongly advise you do not heed the academic reviews of "The Story of Civilization." There is no reason to assume the critics even read one volume of Durant's work. Be aware that academic philosophy professors list Hanna Arendt, a second rate intellectual, as the only significant female philosopher and ignore one of the most powerful minds of the post WWII era, Ayn Rand. Sure, she is flawed but she is greater than a Camus or a Chomsky. I strongly recommend reading "Caesar and Christ" and the entire 10 volume set of "Story of Civilization" - if you truly seek to be generally educated. You will learn more from Durant than from years of liberal arts schooling in any university. I never heard a professor mention Durant to students but I saw the entire set on the shelves of the private libraries of some major historians. Would you buy, own, read and keep 10 volumes of books you knew to be worthless? Ignore the academic mantra and decide for yourself.
Let me introduce you to this remarkable man. Durant was a gifted Columbia philosophy student who earned a PhD in philosophy. He was a major teacher-staff member of a now forgotten, fascinating private school movement, The Modern School movement. He served primarily as a head foreign language teacher. A real scholar, Durant mastered six important languages. Durant wrote and published "The Story of Philosophy" in the 1920s. To his surprise, it was an instant best seller. Durant's prose style, bright mind, and sharp wit made the book a little classic that has never been out of print. The book made him famous & independently wealthy and professors wrote to inform him that "Story of Philosophy" had caused a sharp increase in enrollment in philosophy courses.
Durant's book income allowed him to quit working and pursue his fascination with history. He devoted the rest of his life to researching and writing "The Story of Civilization," still a unique work. Do yourself a favor. Read the Introduction to any volume. Read a chapter of any volume before you decide whether to buy or read a volume of the history. The books are thick but Durant was a major prose stylist. His prose style and his wit will make you love reading Durant.
Durant found history writing to be too divided and too provincial. A real historian, Durant wanted to know something about world history. As you read his history, you must remind yourself of the year when the volume you are reading was written, especially the first three volumes. They read like Durant wrote them today. He writes with keen insight about the Arab world. He tried to correct a major error still prevalent today: The muth that Irish monastaries and monks preserved civilization for the Western world. Durant discusses at length how and why the Arabic world was the leader in learning & science during the middle ages. Arab scholars knew Latin and Greek and they studied the great Greek thinkers. Arab mosques pioneered free education & wealthier muslims practiced charity.
Durant wrote total history (he called it synthesis) before it was a fad in France. He covers art, architecture, literature, geography. When Durant explains the importance of the Mediterranean and describes the coast, you comprehend what he conveys to you. He was there. He was not on a taxpayer paid vacation, thinly disguised as "research." He was "there", at his own expense, for weeks studying the area (with his wife who knew another five languages, including her native Russian). Durant and his wife invested in at least three lengthy world tours to see and study the areas Durant wrote about and He wrote about the civilized world.
American history majors should read at least the "Our Oriental Heritage" volume. Serious art majors should read the entire 10 volumes. You will never read a historian who writes so well or with greater knowledge about the art, architecture and skilled crafts of different times and different peoples.
Enough. I leave you with this. By all means, read modern academic trashings of Durant's "Story of Civilization." Also, read the introductory remarks in each volume. You may be surprised to learn that Durant wrote each volume twice. He sent his final drafts to well known academic historians, according to their region of specialty. Durant then re-wrote each volume in response to detailed criticisms these professors sent him. No volume of "Story of Civilization" contains the 'whole truth' but very few modern histories of one year of one institution are more factually accurate. And no academic historian can lay claim to possessing the 'whole truth.' If you have a liberal arts graduate degree, read all ten volumes. You may gain the basic liberal arts education you wanted but did not get in six years of college.
HISTORY WELL DONE.......2005-01-01
It this third volume, Durant continues the story of man through the time of the height of Rome and Christ. Like the other volumes it is quite well done and despite what another reviewer's opinion is, quite comprehensive. Granted, I you want to read more about battles, etc. they you should probably look elswhere. I am of the school that a time period can only be understood by what they left behind, i.e. art, literature, politics, etc. rather than who they defeated in battle, or who defeated them. This is only my opinion though, others look at it differently. Also, I suppose if you are teaching a college course addressing this period of time, you would certainly want to gleen information from other sources. That not being the case on my part, I thought this was a wonderful overview of a very important epoch. I thought it was quite well presented. Recommend highly.
Civilization vs. History.......2004-05-23
The book has wonderful moments. It is lovingly written and often witty. However readers should be aware of Durant's definition of civilization. According to Durant:
"Civilization is social order promoting cultural creation. Four elements constitute it: economic provision, political organization, moral traditions and the pursuit of knowledge and the arts. It begins where chaos and insecurity end. For when fear is overcome, curiosity and constructiveness are free, and man passes by natural impulse towards the understanding and embellishment of life"
If you want a history that incudes the brute forces of history (not solely its cultural creation) you will probably be somewhat disappointed. There is nothing wrong with Durant's msny sections on poetry, philosophy, painting etc. but it squeezes the space alotted to things like economic trends and military struggle. If you want to read this book, you should probably first read a regular history of Rome. You can then appreciate this book as icing on the cake.
Valuable reference for historical novel readers.......2002-11-04
It is an excellent history reference, although people may not read it from page one to the end like reading a fiction. College students may use it for academic reference and research papers.
However, if you are into Roman historical novels such as Colleen McCullough "First Man in Rome", "Grass Crown"..., Gore Vidal "Julian", Robert Graves "I, Claudius"..., Henryk K. Sienkiewicz "Quo Vadis"; Roman era fantasies such as Pauline Gedge "The Eagle and the Raven", Donna Gillespie "The Light Bearer", it definitely adds complimentary flavor to your reading by being aware of the political and social environment of Roman Empire. The chapters are not essentially in chronological layout, but, for example, a chapter devoted to Roman arts and letters, another for daily lives of the social classes. Whilst you are reading your novel in the middle and want to find out more about a particular topic, simply refer to the Index and the relevant chapters.
You would enjoy the novels, and possibly Shakespeare's "Anthony and Cleopatra", and the movies "Ben-Hur", "Spartacus", "The Fall of Roman Empire", "Gladiator" even more. And "Cleopatra" and "Quo Vadis" were made movies too.
The part of Early Christianity in the latter chapters, would help you in reading the Gospels, the Acts, and letters from Paul and the disciples. In the same manner, it helps you to appreciate more in reading Christian historical fictions such as Sholem Asch "The Nazarene" "The Apostle", Thomas Costain "The Silver Chalice".
An additional recommendation is Vol 4. "Age of Faith", sole focus of which is the discussion of the religions Judaism, Christianity, Islam in the Middle Ages.
Pearls before swine.......2000-01-03
It's too bad so few people have taken the trouble to read or even review Durant. "The Story of Philosophy" was a best-seller in 1929. Tom Clancy & Patricia Cornwell (sic) get listings as long as the day is long, but Durant just gets in left in the corner ignored. It's a shame.

"How does a dinosaur say good night when Papa comes in to turn off the light? Does a dinosaur slam his tail and pout? Does he throw his teddy bear all about? Does a dinosaur stomp his feet on the floor and shout: 'I want to hear one book more!'? DOES A DINOSAUR ROAR?" Most certainly not. Dinosaurs give their mommies and daddies big hugs and kisses, tuck their tales in, and whisper "Good night!"
Every sleepy little dinosaur will recognize the tricks of the trade in these bedtime shenanigans. The chuckle factor is sky-high here, with giant, full-page pictures of cleverly identified Tyrannosaurus rexes, triceratopses, and Pteranodons. A variety of human mothers and fathers trying to put their dinosaur children to bed will bring the point home that the story may have something to do with human kid behavior as well. This good-natured nighttime book is sure to be a winner (even though it might inspire a few noisy dinosaur antics), especially as it's written by Jane Yolen, prolific Caldecott Medalist author of Owl Moon. Yolen and Mark Teague have teamed up to create a fun, silly, playful read-aloud. (Ages 3 to 7) --Emilie Coulter
Book Description
What if a dinosaur catches the flu?Does he whimper and whine between each "At-choo"?Does he drop dirty tissues all over the floor?Does he fling his medicine out of the door? Just like kids, little dinosaurs hate being sick. And going to the doctor can be pretty scary. How DO dinosaurs get well soon? They drink lots of juice, and they get lots of rest; they're good at the doctor's, 'cause doctors know best. As in their first dinosaur book, Yolen and Teague capture children's fears about being sick and put them to rest with playful read-aloud verse and hilarious pictures.

the perfect goodnight book!.......2007-06-02
I have 3 year old twins and they love this book so much that they know all the words by heart, and it is fun to act out what is said on each page, we read several stories before bed, and this is their favorite one.
Love this book!.......2007-05-03
My girls and I love this book! It is the perfect rhyming book with ample opportunities to add life to it while you read. My girls love to stomp their feet on the floor, and we all stop when we get to "does a dinosaur" and real loud all three of us ROAR and they get such a kick out of that. They also like to show me the Mama and the Daddy at different points. We also have the clean up book and that is equally as good. And the illustrations are fantastic. A HUGE fan of this author/illustrator and I HIGHLY recommend this book.
My son loves this book!!.......2007-04-16
I have read this book to my 15 month old son every night since we bought it. He loves the pictures and the story. This is the only book he hasn't ripped the pages. Highly recommend.
We love this book ... all 11 of us! .......2007-03-25
I read this book to my preschool class almost every day before nap! I was never really interested in dinosaurs, but I love these guys! Mark Teague's illustrations are beautiful, captivating and funny, as is Jane Yolen's prose. From the crazy antics of one huge fellow who is demanding a piggy back ride before he goes off to sleep, to the sleepy head who is tucked lovingly into bed, the dinosaurs hold the interest of kids and adults alike. This book, along with the book, Sit, Truman!, are the first two books my 4 year old preschool class learned to "read"! They are so proud of themselves when they read and act out the pages for their friends. We love the entire How do Dinosaurs series, but this is by far our favorite. If you have little ones who love being silly, or who love dinosaurs, or who love to be read to, this book is one you should have in your collection. It will soon become a much loved bed time favorite.
LOVED this book.......2007-03-03
My almost three year old daughter said that she wanted a dinosaur book so we picked this book out. The pictures are great and we love all the details, but what I really love about his book are the simple words. My daughter can recite this book and it is the cutest thing. She now reads it to me. I highly recommend this book!!
