One of the Best xanth books!.......2002-08-29
I though night mare was probably one of the absolute best xanth books! Imbri is a great character, and the book has a great plot. I recomend reading the series in order, becasue you will understand more of the jokes, and the book will make more sense. If you do find the urge to read the books out of order this one should be near the top of your list!
It was O.K.......2002-08-08
Having read all of the earlier "Incarnations of Immortality" series I was anxious to find more books by Piers Anthony.
"Night Mare did not live up to my expectations maybe this is just the weak link in the series (there is always one you must admit) and I will try the others.
It seemed to me as if this book showed good promise but got bogged down trying to impress a younger audience.
A fun book, but needs some back ground........2002-07-30
As far as Zanth books go, this was one of my few favorites, but I also think it needs more background than most Zanth novels. Most of them are more stand-alone, but many old characters are brought back in this book, and it's nice to understand Zanth's situation as it relates to "Mundania" before you read this book.
Consequentially I would recommend reading "A Spell for Chameleon," the first book, "Castle Roogna," and "Ogre, Ogre" before reading "Night Mare." Of course if you wanted to start out with the best you could read "Dragon on a Pedestal," a cute and up-lifting book, the very best of the Zanth Series. (It's later than all the others though, so it's sort of a toss up.)
Avid Anthony Fan.......2001-11-09
If you like Piers Anthony and the Xanth series this book wont let you down. Lots of new puns, many twists and turns. A great read.
Night Mare's Nightmare.......2001-09-10
Mare Imbrium, a night mare, gained half a soul. Disrupting her work, she netherless kept it. As result, she was exiled to the day world with a message to the king, "Beware the Horseman". Meanwhile, Xanth is being invaded by the outside world, and is having trouble coping.Shortly after delivering the message, the king's mind was taken, and he remained immobile. Then the same happened to the next king, and the next... The prophesy that ten kings would be taken seems to be coming true... At the worst time! Kings are disappearing fast, the Mundane army is advancing, and there remains just one problem... The potential kings stop at nine.

Three for the Price of One.......2000-06-22
This is a great book to get, because it is actually three Xanth books in one. The first one, Centaur Aisle, is the fourth book in the series, and continues the mix of humorous puns, romance, and fantasy adventure as Dor is left in charge of Xanth as King Trent takes a "vacation" to Mundania (Earth). However, when the King goes missing, Dor must set out to find him, so he treks to the Southern most reaches of Xanth, the entrance to Mundania is of course to the North.
Book 5 Ogre, Ogre is a endearing tale of an Ogre who goes out on a quest, but forgets what it was he was questing for near the start of his trek. Nothing to fear though, everything works out in the end.
Book 6, Nightmare is a story about one "horses" dream to see the rainbow. Before she can though, she must save Xanth from the latest wave of Mundanians, Solve the problem of the disapearing Kings, and deal with the dastardly Horse man. All will be revealed by the end of the novel.

And the horse's owners are ghosts, doomed to relive the tragedy that has kept them trapped in time for more than a hundred years.

Actually, I am the author.......2004-04-01
I really appreciate all the positive feedback on this book. I must say that when I finished writing it, I felt as if I had put together a pretty good book, and I have written many. I'd be happy to correspond directly with any readers at vlforman@yahoo.com. And thanks for reading the book!
Awesome...mysterious.......2003-06-14
Janet wants a horse bad, and her parents wont even let her buy half ownership in one. Angry, Janet goes to bed and dreams that she is riding a mystical white mare...and finds out the mare is real and that its owners are living in the arroyo. Or are the mare and her owners real? You'll find out! It is a mysterious book. I loved it. It tingles the senses. The only problem is, Janet is acting like a brat because the white gelding, a lesson horse she rides, isn't perfect and beautiful with a flowing mane and able to jump five feet, so she's mean to it. She acts like the only horses are those who jump the moon and have brilliant color and dainty legs and are like dogs.
a must read for all who love horses........2003-03-15
a great book about a girl named Janet Mashall, who wants a horse. One night a great white horse, she had a wonderful ride. She called it Strom. A must read.

I loved Night Mare. Janet is thirteen and her parents won't buy her a horse. Her coach gladly lends her the stables horse and Janet is ungreatful. The horse is slow and clumsy. When she meets a horse at night she can't tell if it's real or not. She visits again and discovers that the owners were ghosts. Janet alone sets their spirts free.

Night Mares
Something is very wrong at Nina Crawford's veterinary surgery on the outskirts of Glasgow. Despite all her medical efforts, a deadly strain of bacteria is killing every horse that passes through her operating theatre. And the vicious nightmares that once plagued Nina have returned, pushing her to the very brink of suicide--unless her psychiatrist and friend Kellen Stewart can save her from going over the edge.
Kellen is mystified. Why, after such steady progress, should Nina's mental state deteriorate? Even more deaths at Nina's surgery and a suspicious fire at her home threaten to crumble Nina's fragile defenses. It's a case that will push Kellen over a line she never thought she'd cross--and before it's over, she'll risk not only her profession, but her very life.
Customer Reviews:
tightly-plotted, well-written and engaging.......2005-04-03
Originally, I picked up "Night Mares" simply because I love horses and literature to do with them in any capacity, which is one of the reasons why Dick Francis hardly ever dulled on me. But this is a good novel in its own right, tightly plotted, well-written and with engaging characters.
A brilliant young veterenary surgeon runs into difficulties with an MRSA-like bug affecting horses in her surgery. Old stresses and traumas rise back to the surface as her sanity and composure beging to unravel. Her friend and therapist who serves as the narrator is not without issues of her own and the tension betwen the two carries the story well.
Read between the lines...........2003-01-21
Manda Scott has managed to captivate her audience yet again in another Kellen Stewart mystery/thriller. Absolutely spellbinding reading...I could not turn out the light until the last page was read...
It's a veterinarian/horse-oriented mystery!.......2001-08-10
This was probably the best animal fiction I've ever read. As a breeder of horses, I found it riveting and impossible to put down. As did a friend of mine who is also a breeder. For someone not familiar with horses, and especially for someone not interested in veterinary medicine, I suspect it would be a hard read. I wonder if some of the people who were disappointed with this book bought it for the lesbian angle instead of the horse stuff - it's definitely written for the horseperson. If you've ever stayed up 24 hours a day for days on end nursing a sick horse or a foal in intensive care, you will relate to this book. I thought her other two books were good, but this book is a must-read for anyone facinated by veterinary medicine.
Disappointed in character's development.......2000-05-21
After reading and enjoying "Hen's Teeth" I tried this one. I was unhappy with the ethical boundaries of the main character. I realized that I lost respect for her due to her unprofessional behavior. I will read the next one, but was disappointed to find that I can't recommend this one to my friends.
I could not put it down!.......1999-09-27
I am not a professional 'reviewer' and I am afraid that it is beyond me to do justice to this book. I am not particularly cognizant of undercurrents, themes, significant emotional threads, symbolism - when I took English Lit in school, it almost made me hate "literature". I just loved the book and the characters, and wished it didn't have to end. I know that one's enjoyment of art, music and books can be enhanced by being enlightened as to technique, etc., but I don't have time to go into all this - I am just guided in my choices re these "cultural" pursuits as to what gives off good vibes for me and enjoy them thoroughly. I "love" Kellen but please don't ask me why I do. I think this is to do with the skill of the writer - Kellen is someone I would like to know, have live next door, be friends with and someone that I would care what happened to. My daughter felt the same way and neither of us are lesbian (that we know of!) so this is not necessarily defined by our sexuality. The main characters in Night Mares (or in Hen's Teeth, the previous Kellen Stewart book) have to deal with conflicting emotions which gives a great deal of depth to the book, making it much more than just a really good "read". I couldn't put it down - enjoyed it immensely and I have the next one on order already (even though it has been published yet).

Mayra Calvani -- TCM REVIEWS.......2006-12-03
With this book, Wild Heart Ranch Books brings children another lovely, melancholic story about horses and their quest for freedom.
In this story the author draws a connection between the Pegasus Constellation and the time long ago when "the land was filled with wild horses thundering across vast plains."
It is the story of a noble, wild stallion named Eclipse, and his struggle to protect his herd from hunters. It is also a story of friendship. It is with the help of an enemy stallion named Golden Earth that Eclipse is able to save his herd from a wild chase. Besides Golden Earth, the earth and the moon also help in their own magical way, as these are the "Spirits of Freedom." The author uses myth, fantasy and even a bit of magical realism to add depth to the story.
Unlike I Sea Horses, a title with a similar theme by the same publisher which is aimed at younger children, The No More Night Mares has fewer illustrations and longer, more complex text. The illustrations, though, are photo-like and rich with detail, making the beauty and strength of these animals come alive across the pages.
This is a nice book for parents to read to children who love horses, or for those who wish for their children to understand the meaning of freedom and the harm that man has unwillingly done against these intelligent, magnificent creatures.
(RAW Rating: 4.5) - Not All Nightmares are Bad..........2006-06-14
In NO MORE NIGHT MARES readers are taken on a journey led by a noble stallion by the name of Eclipse. Eclipse is said to have been born at the moment of a lunar eclipse with the moon itself shining in his eyes. In his younger days, he and other members of his herd were captured by men who wanted to make them tame. Eclipse manages to escape, and eventually becomes the strong leader of a herd of his own. Yet the threat of humans was relentless, and eventually he and some of his herd were cornered. That is until the forces of nature unite and make a stand for freedom.
Dawn VanZant has a unique voice that is reminiscent of the fairy tales we all heard as children. She has a gift for integrating fact with fantasy, and man with nature. In NO MORE NIGHT MARES, she has taken the abstract concept of freedom, and brought it to life through the stories of the wild horses. In addition, she uses the horses to teach messages of hope, perseverance, and courage. She also demonstrates the impact of man on nature and how not all change is good. The simple illustrations compliment the story well, while leaving room for the imagination of the reader. The author includes a collection of Internet resources so that readers can learn more about wild horse preservation efforts. NO MORE NIGHT MARES will be most enjoyed by those already familiar with horses, but it will likely ignite a passion in anyone who reads it. And while the book isn't explicitly political, this heartwarming story is sure to spark an interest in this cause with a new generation of readers.

a book to be treasured.......2006-03-30
In honor of the once great herds of wild horses, the legend of Comet, Moonbeam and Lucky Stars - the night mares, is born. For all the magic and wonder that the herds instill in our hearts, the essence of the night mares shines down from the midnight sky granting wishes from the stars.
The beautifully illustrated, magical book, "The No More Night Mares," is an inspiration - but more than that, it is a dream weaver, a mind-expanding myth, and a mystical tale of moral guidance and love. What child doesn't dream of horses or wish upon a star?
Eclipse is the fastest and strongest stallion in his territory. He is the leader of his herd and is blessed by the protection of the night. He moves his herd of females and foals through the fog and darkness so that their greatest danger, man, does not detect them. Having been captured as a foal with his mother, Eclipse's escape has made him very wise. One night though, even he is unaware of lurking danger.
A friendly rival, Golden Earth, races to warn Eclipse of an approaching herd of two-legged hunters. Dividing the herd, sending the slowest of his mares and the foals to safety with Golden Earth, Eclipse gathers his fastest mares to draw the humans away. What happens next is the stuff legends are made of. The mares become guiding lights forever more.
Creating a legend is not easy, but Wild Heart Ranch, with author Dawn Van Zandt and illustrator Kim McElroy have done so, inspiringly. Appealing to horse lovers of all ages, and anyone who gazes at the stars in wonder, "The No More Night Mares" is a book to be treasured.

Book Description
Jane Scott seems luckier than most. Inherited money and her profession as a journalist have placed her in a milieu she deeply loves, the world of championship horses. Yet she has reached a dark crossroads, one all too familiar: another lesbian relationship is coming to its predictable end. And the television images of the headline-making death of her parents continue, all these years later, to haunt her.
Jane has been investigating a cruel scandal in her world, the theft and/or killing of prized horses for their insurance value. When she accompanies her best friend to evaluate an Arabian horse, Jane knows its price is too cheap--way too cheap. Suddenly, shockingly, she is embroiled in a devastating murder, for which she blames herself. A murder that hurls her into the orbit of a beautiful, wild-spirited mare named Night. A murder that will take her to Montana, and to the ranch of a singular woman who holds the power to penetrate every border of Jane's well-guarded, grieving self.
Customer Reviews:
Mystery with a Sense of Place, Sense of Character.......2007-01-25
NIGHT MARE is a mystery and adventure story. It delivers the basics a reader expects in this kind of book: a tightly woven plot, an insightful look at its somewhat esoteric topic (here, the shocking murder-for-profit of expensive show horses), and an engrossing, believable, exciting read. It also delivers a couple of less conventional elements:
The first is solid descriptive writing that, without calling attention to itself, allows us to share the writer's finely developed sense of place. Both the Vermont farm where Jane Scott's adventure begins and the Montana ranch where she finds herself before it's over are depicted with an economy of telling detail. The incidents become more real, the suspense more gripping, because of these entirely convincing settings.
The second is a truly three-dimensional main character. We learn to know and care about Jane gradually, as she investigates a merciless killing for which she blames herself (and very quickly gets in far over her head) and as she attempts to deal with her own demons. Jane's strengths and weaknesses both contribute to her actions in attempting to solve the mystery. And, while the book's ending is neat and satisfying, Jane's own problems aren't neatly solved. We're left with the feeling that she's made a strong move forward toward self-realization but is still not all the way there. In other words, we feel we've met and gotten to know a real person, not the paper-cut-out character that too many mystery protagonists turn out to be. And we feel that we'd like a chance to know her better. At least that's how I felt; I'm waiting for a sequel.
Exciting adventure.......2003-03-05
Jane is a freelance journalist in Vermont whose relationship with her girlfriend (using the term loosely) is coming to an end. She and her best friend Victoria both have a fierce love of horses, so when a horse Victoria considered buying is brutally murdered, Jane can't help but get involved in the investigation, especially since the police aren't doing anything. All too quickly, Jane is hurled into danger. The trail takes her to Montana, where she encounters a strong woman who helps her in more ways than one. Overall, the story and characters would've benefitted from more exposition. It seemed like I was being hurried through the book so Jane could get on with things, whereas I would have much rather lingered. "Night Mare" is an exciting adventure that leaves the reader begging for a sequel.
An Entertaining Read, especially for Horse Lovers.......2002-12-21
Franci McMahon's sophomore effort is again involving horses, only this time instead of distance riding, the story revolves around a newspaper reporter, Jane Scott, who shows championship horses as a hobby. Essentially a mystery and thriller, the story follows Jane and her friend Victoria, both of whom are upset about the bad treatment some of the horses in their area are receiving. With a little digging, Jane uncovers sleazy conspiracies to steal, transport, and re-sell prize show horses. When she sticks her nose in, all hell breaks loose and she very nearly loses her life.
The novel starts a bit rocky. The side story of Anne's breakup with her girlfriend is necessary to later plot development, but doesn't endear any of the characters to the reader. But once Jane actually begins investigating, McMahon's writing skill comes to the forefront and the mid-section of the book is gripping. The last third of the book effectively mixes romance with mystery and intrigue.
As with her 1994 novel, McMahon has written a colorful and engaging story, with horses as the secondary characters. The novel is entertaining and a quick read. Of particular note is the terrific-and thematically perfect-book cover by ArtByLucy which packages the book beautifully.
