Book Description

Donna Leon’s charming, evocative, and addictive Commissario Guido Brunetti series continues with Suffer the Little Children. When Commissario Brunetti is summoned in the middle of the night to the hospital bed of a senior pediatrician, he is confronted with more questions than answers. Three men -- a young Carabiniere captain and two privates from out of town -- have burst into the doctor's apartment in the middle of the night, attacked him and taken away his eighteenth-month old baby boy. What could have motivated an assault by the forces of the state so violent it has left the doctor mute? Who would have authorized such an alarming operation? At the same time, Brunetti’s colleague Inspector Vianello discovers a money-making scam between pharmacists and doctors in the city. But it appears as if one of the pharmacists is after more than money. Donna Leon's new novel is as subtle and fascinating as ever, set in a beautifully-realized Venice, a glorious city seething with small-town vice.

First Sentence: ...and then my daughter-in-law told me that I should come in and tell you about it.

Commissario Guido Brunetti is awakened and ask to come to the hospital. A doctor of Pedriatics has been severely beaten. Three armed men broke into the apartment of the doctor and his wife and took away their 18 month old son. It seems the men were not local police, but Carabinieri, or military police and there as part of a raid on family who had adopted children illegally. During Brunetti's team's investigation, they discover a money-making scheme between the doctors and pharmacists wherein one of the pharmacists is motivated by his perception of improving morality.

Leon is a wonderful writer. Her ability to create sense of place and society is one of the best and she balances that with a humanity and humor in her characters. Brunetti is not one of the angst-ridden protagonists, but has a wife, family and city that he adores. The story is, at times, heart wrenching but the author doesn't overplay those aspects. The ending seemed a bit abrupt and was tragic but I did figure out the villain fairly soon into the book. However, Leon is always worth reading, just for her wonderful style.

A Donna Leon addict, I have read all of her novels and was excited when this one hit the stands. To my surprise, the novel was a big disappointment. It was as if Leon had run out of steam and was just squeezing out another novel. There is no energy or passion in the writing. Even the affecting story of bought children turns into a routine. "Suffer the Little Children" is a sparse novel and even if you are a Donna Leon fan, I can't recommend spending your time reading it.

5 out of 5 stars Suffer the Little Children by Mary Raftery....How sad!! It needs to be told!.......2006-03-09

Ever since the movie .."The Magdalene Sisters" and Frank McCourt's book..."Angela's Ashes", Plus the fact that I am a quarter Irish and love Ireland and her people, I find I want to know more and more about her people and the TRUTH of how they have suffered yet have remained strong and vital and are proud and have given much to our world today!(England should be ashamed of what they have done for far too long, too!)
This book tells an awful story about the horrors of little children treated so badly for years and years. I know sadly that these wrongs can never really be righted for these victims or the words, "I am sorry" will erase the pain in their hearts, but I do hope eyes are open now and this cannot happen ever again to anyone....especially to children...no matter what country they come from and no matter what their color or race. Bless the children and keep them safe!! God bless Ireland...

5 out of 5 stars Shameful Irish Catholic.......2005-05-01

This book is comprehensive and deeply moving. I could not put it down. I was disgusted and angry by the end of it. I am ashamed to be Irish and ashamed to be Catholic. How this could have gone on for so long with no help for these children is beyond words. If there is a hell, then open arms to all those sick and sadistic Brothers and Nuns, all of whom were operating in the name of God....! How dare they call themselves charitable and merciful. They are some of the most vile human beings in existence. Between that and the sex scandal in America, the Catholic Church owes many people an apology and some sort of restitution. For shame the Church still chooses to cover up it's misuse of power. If the Nuns and Priests and Brothers were not so sexually frustrated, maybe they wouldn't be so evil. Sorry to vent so strongly. After reading this book, you will feel the same way. Also read Do Penance or Perish, but not as good as this book. Thank you.

5 out of 5 stars Suffer the little Children a most fantastic written book.......2001-10-30

This book is one of true meaning an excellent written book, which show's the through Ireland. This books explains the mentality of the religious and states minds. Truly deeply sad book but very much worth the read. This book is excellent in the sense of giving true awareness to the Irish state.
Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Understanding Ireland.......2001-05-17

This book presents a portrait of 20th century Ireland that will debunk any nostalgic or sentimental view of the so called 'Emerald Isle'. No shamrocks and leprecauns in this book, but a history of cruelty, abuse and power. It tells the story of how Irish children were incarcerated in huge numbers throughout the 19th and 20th centuries in reformatory and industrial schools which were managed by the Catholic Church. Based on detailed historical research and interspersed with gut-wrenching first hand accounts of survivors of these institutions, it shows how an alliance between a power hungry Catholic Church and an indifferent Irish State resulted in the incarceration of the children of the poor. Rather than helping poor families, Church and State removed these children to bleak institutions where large numbers were sexually and physically abused and tortured by their Christian carers. I don't think that I will ever think about the Catholic Church and Ireland in the same way ever again. Anger, saddness, frustration, disbelief, but above all anger - why did this happen? I experienced all these emotions when reading this book. If you want to really understand Irish society, this book is essential and harrowing reading.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Not one of the best in the series.......2007-06-23

While all of the books in Tremayne's Sister Fidelma series are engaging, the earlier works, such as this one, are less developed in terms of Fidelma's psychological profile. Beyond her general chutzpah and quiet love for Brother Eadulf, we don't get the same insight that is revealed in later works such as Act of Mercy (Sister Fidelma Mysteries).
While Tremayne's historical knowledge is to be applauded, the application to the mystery makes the reading a bit arduous. Sometimes the historical lessons are a bit heavy-handed, and I found myself resenting the fact that the mystery's solution was dependent upon a working knowledge of 7th century Old Irish.
That said, this book, like the others in the series, is a solidly fun mystery and an enjoyable read.

5 out of 5 stars Third in an Excellent Series.......2007-01-27

The author Peter Tremayne obviously has a great knowledge of Ireland in the 7th century and also on the Irish Law of the period. His Sister Fidelma book are attracting what can only be described as a cult following, but they are of interest to anyone who likes historical novels or mysteries. This series of books are set in Ireland in the 7th century, a time when there was total equality for women. The lead character is the beguiling Sister Fidelma. She is a brilliant scholar, a leading authority on Irish law and the sister of a king. This is also a period in history when celibacy was not yet a part of religious life.

The Irish, unlike the English have always shown a much greater respect and admiration for their womenfolk and this is why, even in an age when most countries treated women with little or no regard, other than for breeding an heir, that Sister Fidelma has risen to the position that she now holds. Although she is the sister of a king, this has little or no bearing on her ability to command respect.

The Venerable Dacan found brutally murdered and Sister Fidelma has been summoned to investigate by Muman's dying king. Her task is not only to solve the mystery of the brutal killing but to prevent a bloody war breaking out between Muman and the kingdom of Laigin.

4 out of 5 stars Heavy Going?.......2002-10-11

I don't really know what some of the reviews mean when they say that this book is a bit heavy going unless you're a scholar of this Celtic era. I didn't find that at all. I quite enjoy this series, and find that each book tells me more about the people and the history from these times. But it doesn't feel like a history lesson since the mystery is always good. Sister Fidelma is quite refreshing - an opinionated, and intelligent woman from the seventh century in Ireland. Not what I expected from this time in history, but it's interesting to find out that women were considered equals and allowed to excel in their chosen fields as far back as that. Is that the Dark Ages? It doesn't really seem like it and they were certainly more enlightened than people were in subsequent centuries. This particular story was a heart-rending one since we also saw how cruel and unmindful of human life some of the warriors were then. It was particularly sad because children were involved. The title for this book is certainly appropriate. But, it was a good story, and I look forward to the next one.

4 out of 5 stars A trip into another world.......2000-08-15

This is the first in the series of Sister Fidelma mysteries that I read, and it won't be the last. Set in Ireland in the year 665(!), this story involves not only a number of murders but also a surprisingly detailed glimpse into the legal and political systems of that era. I understand Tremayne is a respected authority on ancient Celtic culture, and his background shows. The plot is complicated and the language strange (how should I pronounce words like "dalaigh" and names like "Mhichil"?), but it is a satisfying mystery with a carefully crafted plot that takes no shortcuts and doesn't leave the reader feeling cheated at the end. Read this if you're interested in experiencing the flavor of a different era (which yet has some strange resemblances to our own) and willing to pay close attention!

5 out of 5 stars the best in a great series.......1999-09-09

i have read the books of almost every historical mystery writer and i find this one book may have the most complicated yet logical plot of any.A superb mystery set in 6th century Ireland with a female heroine. If you like historical novels this is a must read. This is the 3rd in a series but they do not have to be read in order. This is clearly the best in the series.A must read.

4 out of 5 stars Suffer The Little Children.......2007-06-18

I bought this book on amazon a while back and just got around to reading it.It is`very ,very hard to put down. Not only does James Cummings Jr. have multiple wives ,a bigamist, but also the abuse he makes them endure along w/ his children, neice, and sister make this book excellent. It is sad, will make you angry, and just a bgreat true crime book all around.I have been reading true-crime for 25 years and this is in my top 20,which says alot!

4 out of 5 stars Horrible Crime to Read About If You Can Wade Through The Writing.......2007-05-14

The story of Jesse James Cummings, Jr. (when are people going to learn to stop naming their children after criminals?) and his abusive, controlling nature over his wives, Sherry and Anita, and the children born to them (two Cummings biological, one from Anita's previous relationship) is absolutely sickening, and heartwrenching. The particulars of the relationship as provided by Anita and Sherry are detailed that you easily form mental images that will remain with you for a very long time.

While the story itself is one of the most gruesome and detailed that I've read about in a while, I was particularly put off by how the author, Barbara Davis, jumped up; a type of "all over the board" writing. I often found myself having to double back to make sure that I hadn't missed something or understood everything correctly.

With that and other "techinal errors" aside, the book is an interesting study into human psyche: how one human can control others and how a woman will do ANYTHING to protect the well being of her offspring.

1 out of 5 stars Please learn to write!.......2006-12-05

I enjoyed the story material for this book, but the "author" cannot seem to present it in any kind of understandable or professional fashion. There is one glaring mistake that brings the entire work into question.

First, I agree with previous reviews that the facts and events are often incoherent. A prime example is when she writes about Jesse Sr. having to go to Oklahoma City because of "his disease", then a few chapters later, we learn it's cancer. In the interim, we're left wondering what disease she's talking about, never having read about a diagnosis or anything.

Next, sometimes it's good to ad some descriptive words. When you say Jesse went to the Atoka sheriff's office, use the proper name Atoka County Sherrif's Office, or the sheriff's department, or the sheriff's office. Atoka is county as well as a city within that county (think Los Angeles). This confuses readers into wondering if you really mean the Atoka Police Department. It's little things like this that raise questions in the minds of readers (especially those with any knowledge of the area or even the state), and challenge the perception of the completeness of or information contained in your book.

Finally, the most glaring, and I think worst, error in the book. There is no COLE County Oklahoma. However, there is a COAL County, Oklahoma. This could be explained away as an easy mistake to make, had the "author" not allegedly spent so much time talking to people around the area and reading news reports. I doubt they made that error. It's also interesting to look at the mugshots and see the information board under the prisoner reading "Coal County" with courtesy given to Cole County. Cole is even used in the text. It brings into serious question some of the integrity of your work.

Oh, and don't try to dramatize some of things that happen in the book by writing them that way. For example, the way that Jesse went to the sheriff's office to file the missing person report. Don't tell me how he carried the photos and stuff. Attribute that description to someone, but don't act like you were in his head.

I'd really like to know where you learned to "write", but I suspect they are ashamed to list you as a graduate.

5 out of 5 stars sad,sad,sad.......2006-10-22

This book was very hard to read not because it was boring, far from it, it was so sad to see what Jesse's victims had to endure day to day. I would recommend this book to anyone in a minute.

5 out of 5 stars Well Written, Great Book.......2006-10-18

This story was incredible and hard to read. The story is unbelievable and the ending is satisfying. After reading this book I was interested to know what happened to the children, women, and the horrible man that caused all of them such pain. I was horrified to find out that the women in this story got sentences that I did not feel they deserved - While Jesse Cummings has appealed his case and got his sentence reduced. Sometimes I do not know why they call it justice when there does not seem to be any.

Great book and a must read!

Book Description

One hundred years ago in Port Arbello a pretty little girl began to scream. And struggle. And die. No one heard. No one saw. Just one man whose guilty heart burst in pain as he dashed himself to death in the sea. Now something peculiar is happening in Port Arbello. The children are disappearing, one by one. An evil history is repeating itself. And one strange, terrified child has ended her silence with a scream that began a hundred years ago.

4 out of 5 stars Definitely on the distubing side..........2007-01-19

In Suffer The Children, a couple seems to be living the ideal life with their two daughters, Elizabeth and Sarah. However, Sarah, the younger daughter, has been irrepairably marked by a terrible event that is shrouded in mystery for the first part of the book. Elizabeth, on the other hand, is genuinely perfect. Almost too perfect, one suspects, yet she has such sincerity and genuine love for her younger sister, who clings to her desperately. But what lies beneath is truly horrific.
This book will definitely creep out, upset, and/or horrify most readers, and in this cynical day and age where it seems like we've seen and read it all, that's pretty amazing. While I found most of John Saul's later books to be repetitive and predictable after you've read a few, this one kept me on the edge of my seat and gave me nightmares for years. I looked it up here out of curiousity but in all honesty, I don't want to read it again. It was that creepy. The one big complaint I have is the ending. It just wasn't tied up at all and was rather unsatisfying.

5 out of 5 stars This was one sick book!.......2006-04-19

Awesome book! Creepy, dark and sick. This guy is one writer to watch for. If you enjoy his most recent novels, do yourself a favor and pick up some of his older ones such as this one, or Creature. Well, worth the read.

1 out of 5 stars Cruelty for cruelty's sake.......2005-10-02

Little phases me, yet "Suffer the Children" is so reprehensible that, even at 13 years old, I had already cultivated a set of standards that demanded I wing this trash across the room. Too bad that approach/avoidance got the better of me and I finished it, although, in my feeble defense, that had as much to do with keeping informed of what it is that you loathe in order to mount the best defense as it did with my morbid curiosity. This is, of course, exactly the style of critique that would typically have me clambering to partake of the offending material, but be warned -- if repulsive, unconscious violence directed at children and animals is not your cup of tea, then cut an abnormally wide swath around this book.

4 out of 5 stars Great first novel!.......2005-09-27

Wow, I just finished this book and man was it great! One thing you might ask yourself is how one child could be accused of something that could have been someone else? I say that while not revealing any spoilers but ask yourself this question when you are well into the book. It is really a disquieting book!

5 out of 5 stars First and Best.......2005-09-16

Saul hits a homerun with his first novel. While he has covered this ground many times in his latter novels, I think this was his very best. Chilling and full of suspense, this is the novel that will get you hooked on Saul.

5 out of 5 stars have to read.......2005-02-08

A friend of mine read these two out of the three books (suffer the children and cry for the strangers)and then she lent them to me to read, she told me that I would love them so I read them and she was
right they are great. Now I am buying them so I can read them again I don't often find books by the same author that I like, but John Saul's novels are great and I am looking forward to reading Punish the Sinners.

5 out of 5 stars New fan of John Saul.......2001-12-18

I borrowed this book from a friend to read at work (which is a very boring job). Not with this book! It has kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time. I can't wait to get back to work to finish reading it! Now, that is terrifying!

5 out of 5 stars Still the Best!.......1998-11-29

Being a John Saul fan since Suffer The Children, I'm glad to see these offered in a set. These three, along with Comes the Blind Fury are still my favorites. Each has its own unique spine-tinglingness. Even after I've finished his newest one, these still remain in my fondest memories. If you like his work and haven't read these, you're missing the best!

5 out of 5 stars awesome.......2007-03-18

im 12 years old read that book in ten days. best book ever! if ur not an elm street fan dont read it its not for you. Its a gory book to read and freddy has some awesome lines in the book. i do plan on reading this again

3 out of 5 stars I dunno'.....I thought it was just okay...........I guess...........2006-06-15

Personally I'm a huge fan of the NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET movies. When I was younger, Freddy scared the living crap outta' me! I've seen all the movies and I loved them all in their own way, part 3 being my favorite. I've also seen the television show (it was horrible as expected) and have read some of the older books and graphic novels. That being said, I had high hopes for this book. So far I enjoyed the books that came from Black Flame publishers, FRIDAY THE 13th being really enjoyable to read. I think David Bishop missed the mark with this one. To me it seemed like he never watched a NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET movie before. He made Freddy seem more "nasty" I guess but he didn't use his dark, creative humor like in the movies. He made Freddy seem a little "off base" if you ask me. Another thing I didn't like about the story was most of the teenagers in it. They seemed very annoying, especially the basketball player who was just over the top with his anger. The only person I liked in the story was the main girl and (spoiler coming up) she dosn't even have a happy ending! I'm not saying that every Horror story or movie needs a happy ending. Usually at the end of a NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET movie, Freddy was always sent back to Hell. Trapped in his nightmare world. At the end of this book it just feels like a set up for the following novel. Over all I feel this story is a rough start for the NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET novels and hopefully with the different authors on future books, things start to pick up. Being the huge Horror fan that I am, I'm still going to buy more in the series. I have high hopes yet for the future books. Don't like my negative review stop anyone from getting into the Black Flame stories. It's truely a wonderful book company for us Horror fans. David Bishop just didn't handle Freddy all that well. Hopefully the series gets better with different authors.

4 out of 5 stars This story takes plsce 2-3 years after Freddy vs Jason.......2006-04-30

I thought this book was really good. I found a couple of spelling errors, besides that I thought the storyline was really good. The author did a really good job with the characters especially Freddy. I like how the author told that the story takes place a couple of years after Freddy vs Jason. I can't wait to read the next book in the series "Dreamspawn". I am hoping it well be as good as the first book.

2 out of 5 stars Not worth it if you've seen the movies........2006-03-31

First off, I am a devoted fan of the series, even though they have strayed from the truth of what Krueger was, and that is a murderer, pure and simple. Anyway, the first book of the post-Freddy vs. Jason era is nothing but an author's wet dream, starring Freddy Krueger. His dialogue is unoriginal, an exact duplicate of everything spoken in the movies (save the parts about his lust for the star character, Alex), and his actions are too bland, even for Freddy Krueger. The author's bland attempts at trying to bring the older series into play, primarily from the original, become overbearing. The first time you read it, you think "Oh yeah, I remember that, ha ha." The tenth time, you have to ask the question, "Is he trying to retell the first movie, or what?" The characters are obvious, their actions and reactions are predictable, and you have a hard time deciding whether or not it is a dream or reality. Just like Jack Sholder conveyed in Freddy's Revenge, you either bring Freddy into reality, or you have him in a nightmare, not both just to make things easier for the extremely boring plotline. So far, the story has been a big disappointment, just your basic horror word porn. True, there are deaths, blood, mutilated limbs, things that have become Nightmare staples, but the plot is a copycat mix of 15% Nightmare 1, 60% Nightmare 3, 5% Nightmare 2, and 20% Freddy vs. Jason. If you have seen these movies, save the 8 bucks, or buy Nightmares on Elm Street: Freddy Krueger's Seven Sweetest Dreams. It costs a little more, but at least you get seven stories, most of which are being copied for this new series of abominations using the Freddy Krueger image as a sales icon, not a seal of quality. The only reason I give this book 2 unworthy stars out of five is that he took the idea of dream powers one step further than Nightmare 3, and allowed them to use them in the real world, but then again, I just think David Bishop was having a hard time himself, discerning what was real and what was a dream. Freddy is a hard character to write for, and like I said earlier, they did a much better job in Nightmares on Elm Street: Freddy Krueger's Seven Sweetest Dreams. Freddy is not a gimmick, or an excuse to swear every other word. Fred Krueger is evil in it's purest form.

Well, until this new series anyways.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT!!!!.......2006-03-13

I could not put it down! it caught the feel of the movie! a greatly written novel although one thing did get to me the fact that freddy had like no vocabulary out side of "Bitch" and "Whose your daddy" but all in all i loved it!
