Book Description

FROM THE #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF JOHN ADAMS

Winner of the 1982 National Book Award for Biography, Mornings on Horseback is the brilliant biography of the young Theodore Roosevelt. Hailed as a masterpiece by Newsday, it is the story of a remarkable little boy -- seriously handicapped by recurrent and nearly fatal attacks of asthma -- and his struggle to manhood.

His father -- the first Theodore Roosevelt, "Greatheart," -- is a figure of unbounded energy, enormously attractive and selfless, a god in the eyes of his small, frail namesake. His mother -- Mittie Bulloch Roosevelt -- is a Southerner and celebrated beauty.

Mornings on Horseback spans seventeen years -- from 1869 when little "Teedie" is ten, to 1886 when he returns from the West a "real life cowboy" to pick up the pieces of a shattered life and begin anew, a grown man, whole in body and spirit.

This is a tale about family love and family loyalty...about courtship, childbirth and death, fathers and sons...about gutter politics and the tumultuous Republican Convention of 1884...about grizzly bears, grief and courage, and "blessed" mornings on horseback at Oyster Bay or beneath the limitless skies of the Badlands.

2 out of 5 stars Expecting more..........2007-05-14

I was really expecting more TR info in this book... a little more than I needed to know about his family and acquaintances and not enough about the man himself.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent writing about Theodore R. and his family.......2007-04-03

David McCullough's writing is superb. I have to admit I liked Thedore Roosevelt better as a person in Theodore Rex. His personal correspondence in this book reveals too much about his apparent enjoyment in killing animals for my taste. IMO his image as a conservationist is tarnished by the joy he took in killing. I was especially offended by his shooting the neighbor's dog when riding his horse. If I had lived back then and he shot my dog, I can safely say it would have been the last dog he ever shot and his departure from life would have been made slow and painful...

But that dislike of his joy of killing aside, he and his family were extraordinary. One cannot change history, so I go with the flow to learn more about it and the people in it...

4 out of 5 stars Review on Mornings on Horseback.......2007-03-25

This book is an excellent history material. For those who are studying or are just interested in American history, this a great secondary source that brings Theodore Roosevelt, Jr. to life. The style Mr. David McCullough uses is very easy to understand, and it is also very descriptive in nature which makes readers feel they were present at the scene. The only weakness is that the book limits T.R.'s life to a 19 year period, which happens before his greatest achievements. Basically, the author leaves you wanting more...
Great choice of biography, great author, and accessable price!

The two readers for this meticulously researched biography of Theodore Roosevelt add appeal, especially when reading the parts with the southern lady or Irish accents. Well done!

    Book Description

Why does talk in families so often go in circles, leaving us tied up in knots? Linguist Deborah Tannen reveals why talking to family members is so often painful and problematic -- even when we're all adults.

Searching for signs of acceptance and belonging, we find signs of disapproval and rejection. Why do the seeds of family love so often yield a harvest of criticism and judgment? In I Only Say This Because I Love You, Tannen shows how important it is, in family talk, to learn to separate word meanings, or messages, from heart meanings, or metamessages -- unstated but powerful meanings that come from the history of our relationships and the way things are said.

Presenting real conversations from people's lives, Tannen explores what is actually going on in family talk, including how family conversations must balance the longing for connection with the desire for control, as we struggle to be close without giving up our freedom.

This eye-opening audiobook explains why grown women so often feel criticized by their mothers -- and why mothers feel they can't open their mouths around their grown daughters, why growing up male or female, or as an older or younger sibling, results in different experiences of family that persist throughout our lives. BY helping us to understand and redefine family talk, Tannen provides the tools to improve relationships with family members of every age.

      Book Description

This program is a collection of segments from never-before-published speeches and observations from Fred Rogers years of working with parents and children, as well as other published materials from books, songs, TV commentary, and more. Using stories from his own life, Rogers discusses the importance of children and the role of parents. Included in the collection: A lot of the ways that I feel and a lot of the things that I offer have their roots in the care my early caregivers gave to me. Parents are like shuttles on a loom. They join the threads of the past with the threads of the future and leave their own bright patterns as they go, providing continuity to succeeding ages.... Those of us who are in this world to educateto care forchildren have a special calling: a calling which has very little to do with the collection of expensive possessions, but has a lot to do with the worth inside of heads and hearts. In fact, thats our domain: the heads and hearts of the next generation: the thoughts and feelings of the future.

3 out of 5 stars great character development.......2005-08-22

Pru is a very courageous woman, with strong values, and a diplomatic tactful way with even the most difficult people. If there were more people like Pru in the real world, it would certainly be a better place to live! Throughout most of the story, I couldn't understand how someone like her could be in love with an arrogant, stubborn, bully of man like McCord. But once she uncovered the secrets and traumas of his past, and used her diplomacy to help him heal and move forward, it was quite obvious that McCord was worthy of being the love of Pru's life!

1 out of 5 stars Who Needs a Family Like This?.......2003-11-01

I usually love Ms. Krentz' books but this one was a turkey. Why? I found the hero completely unlikeable and couldn't imagine why the heroine wanted him. Self-centered, cold men and women without much pride don't do it for me.

      4 out of 5 stars a fun read!.......2002-10-07

This one will be reprinted in April 2003, so I dug it out and see if it was worth a reprint. And yes, not likely at the price they will offer, so suggest used if you can.

The story is a simple one, but as usual it is JAK's character and her incisive writing that makes the book. Case McCord wanted Pru Kenyon in his life but not that the cost of marriage.
Carrying baggage from a previous relationship that ended in death of his fiancé and estrangement from his family, it is cutting off from any such ties that blind - and hurt. Only Problem with that, is Pru - in spite of living with him for three months - is basically an old fashioned girl at heart and thought eventually their relationship would lead to marriage.

She is in a quandary when she discovers she is pregnant. She wants McCord to marriage, but because he loves her, not because he has to...so after giving him marriage or I am leaving and he refuses, she leaves, never expecting to see him again.

He naturally comes after Pru, convinces her he has changed his mind and wants her. Everything is fine until the morning after he wedding when she discovered the bill from the doctor in his pocket. He had none she was pregnant. Pru must face staying and fighting for the love from the man she loves.

The characters and real and warm, and lots of humorous touches that leaves you smiling.

1 out of 5 stars Corny and overly sentimental..........2001-09-07

What a lousy book. It has no real plot, other than some boring family intrigue wrapped around a couple of corny sex scenes. It was a waste of time... or, on second thought, maybe it was a good opportunity to see how fiction should not be written. Who the hell goes referring to his/her spouse by the last name anyway? If you want stereotypes, clichés and a naive love story, go ahead, knock yourself out...

      4 out of 5 stars Family problems........2000-08-28

Unable to convince Case McCord to marry her, Prudence Kenyon leaves, keeping her pregnancy a secret. When Case realizes Pru is carrying his baby, he must work to woo her back and convince her he wants to marry her. After the marriage, Pru works on reuniting Case with his family and clearing up the mystery surrounding the death of Case's fiance.

I've always liked when the heroine defends the hero without knowing the whole story. This is one of those books. Pru is wonderful and Case is truly appreciative. While his family should've known Case better than to believe the story told, it was a deathbed statement, taken far too seriously in most cultures. I, for one, believe that marriage should be for each adult involved, not for the sake of the child. The child suffers when the parents are together only for them, believe me.
