Wow!.......2006-09-18

Kathleen Adams really did a great job when writing this book. After seeing all of the good reviews on here I thought I would take a look at it in the store before purchasing it. Having just bought a writing journal and getting back into the journaling mode, I was looking for a new way of seeing journaling and getting ideas on paper. I have to say there is something in here mentioned for everyone!!! I really like how the author is able to provide some of her own journaling experiences as well as decent examples for the various styles mentioned in this book. Some of the methods in this book really inspires you to reach back in your past and apply some of these methods. I've learned a massive variety of ways to journal after reading this one, it was definately worth my time and money. I recommend this one for all people, whether you are returning to journaling or just beginning, there is something in here for you!

Better than I expected.......2006-08-09

This book is an easy read (for those of you who don't like to read alot). It is not a rule book or a "how to" book. It is a bunch of ideas and suggestions for journaling to the end of self understanding and growth.

The journal is presented as your own world, you can say, be, and do (or not do) anything. It's all up to you. What do you want?

Read JTS, Mark It Up, and Write!.......2006-04-11

I picked up a small spiral bound ecru book for sketching a couple of years ago. No, I'm not an artist, but find myself wanting to make sketches when I'm not making photographs. I then found myself writing on one page and drawing on the other. On a whim, I picked up a copy of "Journal to the Self" at a local bookstore. I read through a few pages.

Then I bought it.

I've read JTS at least three times and every time I approach the book again, I find something new to try out. I find these techniques great for analyzing the things that are on my mind and in my heart. The tools presented in JTS by Ms. Adams are carefully thought out, well-explained, and easy to apply.

That doesn't mean journaling is easy. I found a lot of hard issues to deal with as I probed my background. I also found a number of difficult issues when thinking about my life, where it is, and where I want it to be. The journal is an excellent place to put these thoughts. I return to my thoughts and see if my mind has changed. When my ideas remain the same, there is validation to be found. When my ideas differ, then it's time to think some more. And, it's time to think with a pen.

My favorite tools are Lists of 100, Dialogue (great fun too), Character Sketches, and Unsent Letters. These writing techniques will help you get your thoughts in the books. I highly recommend JTS.

Oh yeah, when you start writing, treat yourself to a Moleskine! They are great journals to work with.

Good Help Getting Started.......2005-09-27

I've tried many times to start a journal for many reasons, therapy, just because I love to write, maybe I'll write a book someday, or just to leave behind a little history for someone to read after I'm gone-the good and the bad of what made me, me. I was never really able to get any direction. This book really helped me get started...so well that I bought another copy and a blank journal for someone I know going through a rough time hoping it would help my friend too.

One of the Best Books on Journaling I've Ever Read.......2004-04-18

I bought this book years ago when it was first published. It is chock full of useful writing suggestions that a journaler can turn to for inspiration when writer's block inevitably strikes.

I gave this book 5 stars because if you manage your expectations, it more than delivers. At 4"x4", it is small, compact, light and portable--great for a NYC mom like me who carried it with me everywhere we went during the 9 month-2 year period of my son's babyhood. It was great at simultaneously demonstrating the lift-the-flap book concept and introducing farm animals and their sounds to babies. As my son grew older, (as kids do with their toys and books), his relationship and engagement with the book evolved as well and I found him thoroughly enjoying not only the flap-lifting, but also combining reading of the book with intermittent breaks of "Old McDonald" stanzas. For a small book, it has a lot of punch.

Well, I managed to purchase an item that was 24.99 from amazon.. one freaking penny more and it's free shipping... Well, I've made a bit of an effort to help expand my son's choices of books to read before bead-time so I chose this book to meet my $25 minimum.

He loves the interaction and has chosen it 4 of the past 5 nights for his bed-time book. I'm sure it's just a matter of time before he moves on to a new book, but for right now... it seems to be the book of the moment.

The book would be good for a child in the pre-reading age and may not be good for a child who lacks soem finer motor skills. The content is nice and allows he and I to interact and prompts questions about various farm animals. it's amazing how... when you try... almost any book can promote educational benefits... even one about farm animals.
I'd definitely buy this book again.

If you're a parent looking into treatment options, then I most definitely recommend this book as a part of your treatment program. It's one of the few 'step by step' approaches to teaching social skills out there, and it seems to make sense.

Unfortunately RDI falls into the "Just use us, we want to be the only game in town!" mentality that so many treatment approaches do. If you explore RDI further (i.e., decide to do a conference or consultation after reading this book), you may be told that:

- Your ABA program is making your child "more autistic", even though they appear to be getting better this is only a short term illusion, underneath it all they are getting more autistic. (Despite research that indicates the exact opposite).

- Language fundamentals (i.e., asking questions, following directions, speaking in sentences using correct grammar, using description) are not a core defecit of autism (despite the fact that the DSM-V lists language delay as a diagnostic criteria for autism) and so they are not targeted.

- The child's age when they begin treatment isn't important, the birth to five time frame for early intervention is arbitrary (again, despite huge research to the contrary - children certainly make progress later in life but a correlation with stronger progress with earlier intervention has certainly been established).

- You do not need to work on teaching your child language skills (i.e., vocabulary, pronouns, categories, concept words, sentence/narrative formation), they will just 'get' all of this if they do RDI, even though RDI doesn't specifically target these skills.

This is some of the information that was presented when I went to an RDI conference and checked out their website, from Dr. Gutstein himself. So I recommend this program to parents with a warning - keep your common sense. Do not fire your speech therapist or your verbal behavior consultant if you're happy with these programs and you think they are working. I like RDI, I think it's a great program and worth doing, but some of the information they are passing along to parents as 'fact' seem more like their own theories that do not appear to be consistently supported by research.

A nice component, might not be a comprehensive treatment approach.......2006-08-28

For those of you who like to skim, my 'nutshell' review of RDI: It's a great program for social skills and joint attention. It's not a complete program for an autistic child. Now for the wordy version...

The negatives of RDI are, in my opinion, not within the program itself but in what this program claims to do. RDI wants to be a core treatment approach for remediating autism, when it doesn't appear to be nearly comprehensive enough to accomplish this. If you take a look at the most common autism remediation approaches (currently, these are mostly ABA based) you'll see that they contain instruction for language, fine and gross motor skills, self help skills, reading, visual processing...the list goes on. RDI ONLY targets what it considers to be the 'core' deficits in autism, largely things such as relatedness to others, ability to cope with and pay attention to new stimuli, and the ability to adapt quickly to a changing environment. This is good stuff, but the program seems to operate on the premise that the other skills will just fall into place if you target the 'core' skills, or that if the child has other issues (i.e., receptive language or reading delays) that these are not 'really' autism, they are a co-existing condition that the child has in ADDITION to the autism and I guess you find another program to target them. A good example to highlight this is language...RDI says that since 85% of autistic children develop language on their own, this is not a true core deficit in autism. Personally, I could not disagree more. True, some language may develop, but that does not mean it matures to a level commensurate with the child's intelligence. Difficulties with 'concept' words, complex sentence structure, narrative formation, verbal reasoning and auditory processing remain present in many autistic children. The fact that not 100% of them have this issue doesn't mean it should be discounted - not 100% of people with OCD have compulsions with their obsessions, but this doesn't mean compulsions aren't central to the disorder.

RDI also presents rather alarming information on its website and at seminars about the supposedly dismal fate of autistic children who 'only' achieve a high IQ and normal school placement (reading between the lines here, this is a criticism of ABA, which often uses these as evidence of its success), saying that only 3% of children with normal IQ and school placement will live independently according to some surveys. The problem is we're comparing apples to oranges here - the children from the actual ABA studies aren't being looked at (and it's my understanding that the follow-up studies from the original Lovaas study were very positive), rather, we're assuming that those children are commensurate with other autistic children with a normal IQ, who may never have received treatment at all.

After that little rant, let me say that I actually do like RDI a great deal, as a COMPONENT of a treatment program. There are some things that cannot be taught in drill form, and conversation, reciprocity, and social language are among them. You can sit a child down at a table and teach them adjectives. You cannot sit a child down at a table and teach them how to share their joy and opinions, how to make observations about the world around them, how to want to interact (and I mean truley interact for interactions sake, not play along so long as the activity is somehow inherently rewarding to them). RDI centers everything around interactive social activities that are, for me at least, the 'missing piece' in many behavioral programs. Another very, very important component of RDI is the development of joint attention, which some research suggests is one of the most important factors in a child's prognosis and yet is extremely difficult to work on in a practical way. RDI does a wonderful job of working on this and I think this alone probably makes a huge difference for many kids.

My bottom line: I would use this for a child I thought had advanced beyond ABA, or as a part of another, more comprehensive (not necessarily ABA, but a teaching-based) program for a child who still had language, academic, or motor needs.

Great method, BUT...........2006-07-10

RDI is a self-proclaimed deficit-based approach, meaning it attempts to remedy the core difficulties in disorders such as autism. Many methods such as ABA, on the other hand, are based around teaching specific skills. For example, an ABA program might involve sitting a child down and teaching them 10 new vocabulary words, whereas an RDI program might focus on teaching children to attend to their parents speech and actions so that new vocabulary is learned naturally (yes, that is a much simplified explanation, but a general overview for anyone unfamiliar).

All of this is great, backed by a growing body of research, and seems highly practical and useful, BUT, there is one word of caution I'd like to throw in here. Consider this analogy...what if this book were about working with children born with physical disorders such as cerebral palsy? A method to treat the root causes of CP would be great, true. But without advanced medical technology, how likely would it be that a therapy method alone would cure all children with this disorder, leave them entirely able to walk, talk, and move with no trouble? How practical would it be, then, to rely entirely on a method that goes at the root cause WITHOUT looking into alternative methods and adaptive equipment to help kids with CP eat, dress themselves, move around, and communicate, in the event that therapy alone did not cure them and take care of all of these issues?

This is what I wonder about RDI vs. ABA and Floortime (which has recently added an intensive language-teaching curriculum based around specific language skills). Suppose that not all children are 100% remediated (which even the most enthusiastic proponents would probably agree is unrealistic), and that they do not all learn to pick up information through the usual channels? At this point, isn't some specialized teaching needed for specific skills? Unfortunately RDI has recently dissociated itself from ABA but I think these two approaches represent two ends of a spectrum...the degree to which you think you can change a child and eliminate their deficits vs. the degree to which you adapt your teaching to their special needs. For most children, there will need to be a balance between these two approaches.

Another thing I wondered about while reading the book was whether or not remediating social deficits would necessarily result in increased sociability. I'm not saying it will or will not, but am quite curious. I am not on the autistic spectrum and have the full range of social skills expected of a 'neurotypical' person as described in this book, and yet I'm still a very solitary creature. It's not a matter of not understanding how to socialize, but a matter of inherent motivation. I wonder, can this be created in people by teaching them HOW to socialize, or is it like me and golf...I know how to play it, sure, but that doesn't mean I care to.

Overall, I like this method and I'm excited to see this fresh wave of thought in the field of autism treatment. I just wish that all of the various therapy programs out there would start to play nicely and realize that none of them have all the answers, as it seems the best approach is an eclectic one.

One more piece of a puzzle.......2006-07-09

RDI is a relatively new approach in the rapidly growing world of autism treatment. Like all approaches, I felt (based on this book) that it has it's pros and cons. Unfortunately I have yet to find The Treatment Approach for autism, it seems as if all of the various approaches out there offer one viewpoint, one piece of the pie.

The positive thing about RDI, in my opinion, is that it fills in some oft-neglected portions of autism treatment. RDI is based heavily on treating the underlying deficits in autism as opposed to teaching 'discrete skills', an area that seems to be overlooked in many approaches. More abstract skills such as social referencing, experience sharing and emotional co-regulation are taught in RDI. Many of the autistic children that I've worked with have made great strides in language and academics, and yet find it difficult to maintain a brief reciprocal interaction due to problems with these types of skills. I've heard many people describe RDI as the 'missing piece' of their therapy program for this reason.

As far as the cons, I was a bit disappointed that RDI does not seem to advocate using the child's natural interests as a foundation for building rapport, especially in the early stages where I would say it's most needed. Both Floortime and Verbal Behavior advocate building early interactions around the child's natural interests, wheras RDI appears to encourage use of a specific set of relationship building activities from the RDI program. When trying to remediate deficits in autism you walk a fine line...on one hand you are attempting to change something about the child, on the other you want to encourage their unique strengths and their individualism. I would have liked to have seen more of a blend, with the child's natural interests being worked into relationship building activities. Why can't a child who likes to tap objects, for example, learn to play a drum with their caregiver?

RDI also focuses on underlying deficits as opposed to discrete skills, which I would label both a pro and a con. Again, there is a fine line here...on the one hand, you want to remediate underlying deficits as much as possible, on the other, it is unlikely that you will correct these things 100% of the time in 100% of kids, so it's likely that some alternative teaching methods will need to be used. Behaviorally based methods use highly structured teaching, isolation of skills, and repetition to teach specific things such as core vocabulary, letter recognition, appropriate behavior, etc. RDI attempts to remediate the underlying difficulties in autism in what I assume is the hope that children won't require this kind of specialized teaching at all. It does not include a way to teach specific skills such as receptive vocabulary, reading, etc. So, again, great if it works, but parents may need another method if some learning deficits remain and specialized teaching is in fact neeeded for kids to pick up certain concepts.

My overall opinion...RDI seems like a great approach that covers one very important portion of autism treatment, but not all of it. For most autistic children, I would recommend using it WITH another, more academically based program focused on teaching more specific skills such as reading, various language skills, etc. Both are important. It may, however, be appropriate to use RDI only with a child who is fairly age appropriate in their language and academics but lacks social skills and awareness.

Finally!!.......2006-06-03

Its about time that a book was written that focuses on the motivation of kids with autism. Further, this therapy addresses one of the key defecits of kids with autism: social skills. Defintely a breath of fresh air for those tired of the rote, ungeneralizable, and BORING appraches of ABA.

Tolle at his best.......2007-02-16

Well, yes...it may seem like the same old message and yet it seems we must hear it thousands of times before we GET it. That has certainly been the case for me, my "unconsciousness" being the hardest habit to break.
Tolle makes the truth utterly entertaining in his own open style.
One review here has mentioned not being able to conceive moving beyond what we call "thought". Tolle points out here (and in his book "The New Earth") that we are not thinking at all, but running habituated tapes in our minds. The place called "Being" is the true place of thought...ever new, fresh, creative, and NOW. If you are compulsively "thinking" about past or future, believe me you are not Being. Tolle points out the difference...as it seems we equate our compulsive neurotic thoughts with "intelligence". Not so, as I can say from being in both places (if only I could be in the Being place always!).
Is Being a place where you can function practically in the world? You bet your boots it is, and so much more. However, it is an unconceiveable place for your ego to entertain. The only place to recieve this GRACE is beyond ego, which is beyond thought. The interesting thing is...
going to the place of Being is something I remember from childhood...and other times when I have been so absorbed in the moment (doing something like art) I moved beyond the endless analytical mind. Truly a "mind vacation"! And it has an unmistakeable familiarity. I know this is THE REAL ME, covered up by ego crapola.
Anyone who enjoys AH Almaas and The Diamond approach will feel a familiar message here in "Essence" and the "Diamond Mind/Heart".
These 2 masters speak of the same place which is available to all, and indeed our natural birthright. One need not be "enlightened" to experience what Tolle is describing. Experiencing Being IS THE ENLIGHTENMENT. Check your ego at the door and find the vast possibilities within. It is within your reach if you want it bad enough! I'm afraid a burning desire is required...and nothing less.

Could lead you beyond the mind.......2006-09-26

"Through the Open Door" is a collection of CDs lasting about one hour each with two apparently random extracts from a retreat given by Eckhart Tolle (E.T., with no pun intended). When it was given and where is unclear. After a brief introduction by the lady who runs "Sounds True" (i.e. the publisher), you start hearing E.T.'s voice and his unmistakable German accent.

Was it really the beginning of a session? I wonder. Those who are unfamiliar with such notions as the illusory character of the "me" will probably have a hard time to follow what Tolle says because this concept is not explained, but taken for granted. Then Tolle shows how the future is essential to the survival of the "me". He makes a few humorous remarks, we hear the audience burst into loud laughter and he rambles on. Fortunately, this recording is not punctuated by peals of hysterical laughter every five minutes (as in "Realizing the Power of Now"). You may fall asleep, which is perfect because you will then hear the teachings... with your unconscious mind!

I don't need to tell you more about the rest. It's the "old" stuff from "The Power of Now".

But you may hear it with a new ear.

When I listened to the cd, I soon found myself questioning what Tolle was saying in his low, slow voice. Then, as he was telling his audience for the umpteenth time to accept the NOW unconditionally and timelessly, I had to get up and close all the windows in my appartment because some workers were noisily clearing the rubble from a nearby construction site (at 2.45 a.m! I live in Peking, the city of the Crazy Human Ants, hehe). I was almost boiling inside, but refrained from heaping abuse on the stillness killers for Tolle's sake.

After that amusing interlude, I again found myself objecting and chattering ("oh, I've heard that before!" "Move on!"). But as time wore on and no outside interference made me lose my fragile focus, I suddenly discovered that I was breathing deeply and bathing in a quite different mental atmosphere. The mind was still and all-embracing. The whole body seemed to be meditating. It was not the usual thing, the product of effort, either deliberate or disguised (trying not to try, you surely know what I'm talking about). No, it was totally natural. I still heard the words, but didn't pay much attention to their meaning. "This is it!", the mind gasped in amazement.

Then the recording ended abruptly. The woman's voice and the guitar broke the flow of Tolle's hypnotic performance. Soon the mental noise reasserted itself: I began to analyze MY experience and hope that I would be able to "make it" AGAIN!

A few days later, I listened to the second CD. This time, Tolle's tone was much more lively and the charm didn't work. I was just bored. Methinks a CD with good Gregorian music (try the monks' choir of Santo Domingo de Silos) would have been better.

You won't be worse off if you apply Tolle's teachings in your life, but if you want to listen to something more genuine and profound, I recommend buying a recording of J.Krishnamurti's dialogues or talks.

Anyway, if you are new to all this, please do read "The Power of Now" or "A New Earth" by Eckhart Tolle first. As I said, the recordings on these two CDs were randomly selected.

Listening without any prejudices to your own thoughts and emotions, to the world is the next best thing. In the end, this is what all spiritual teachings boil down to.

It is always amusing to have to think your way to not thinking, but this form of consciousness can be useful when dealing with a variety of issues, like fear or thoughts that do not lead to a peaceful existence.

Should you renounce thought altogether? Surely this would not allow you to process even what is on this CD, for to be honest, this CD makes you think.

Eckhart Tolle's calm voice invites you into an intellectual playground to explore consciousness. He gives insight into an epic sense of self and his topics encourage a playful intellectual spontaneity where humor is always present. The concepts taught on this CD seem to be useful during meditation. A time to think and a time not to think...

If you are trying to control your thoughts, these teaching can be useful to realign your thinking so you are not always worrying about the future or trying to come to terms with the past.

If you're familiar with the Power of Now and the teachings of Eckhart Tolle, there may be very little "new" here. Does this guy EVER put out anything that's NOT worth listening too??

First, TPON was my favorite book of all time. Then his new book "A New Earth" (which I bought on audio)blew me away, as I liked that he used more real life examples to illustrate his points, and like it even more than TPON!

And now this awesome CD just kicks butt! The highlight for me was when he talked about "the little me" and how it permeates everything we think. How, "a car was stolen" doesn't bother us, but the thought "MY car was stolen" sends us over the edge! Funny how adding that one little word can cause so much stress in the mind.

Also, I like how he talks about how "the little me" both dwells in future (with the never ending hope that things will get better sometime in the future) and yet fears the future (as it knows that the future eventually will bring death).

Another brilliant comment Eckhart makes is that the amount of future you have left is irrelevant, since it only exists in the mind! (I'm paraphrasing here) That, there is just the now moment, and that is all!

Also, he uses lots of humor. Like when he says he occasionally gets e-mails from people who say that they have read TPON and it doesn't make any sense! lol

Why our politicians don't listen to or understand this material is beyond me. Sadly, I would think that Bush would be one of those people that would write the above type of e-mail!?

Created a great seder experience!.......2006-04-17

My shul used this haggadah this past Pesach and I was very impressed with it. My husband (who is not Jewish) enjoyed it so much he has suggested getting this for our house. This haggadah used gender inclusive language. The prayers were elegant and all the prayers had an English translation under them. It also has a part dedicated for Miriam's cup and beautiful sketches. The sections that had songs -- the authors thoughtfully included the page numbers so you could find the song without stumbling through the book. My favorite part of this haggadah, it had commentary from many people, even people who are not Jewish, such as Martin Luther King Jr., to help illuminate parts of the seder. The only downfall of the book is it is a bit large and a bit cumbersome, but overall, well worth it.

Another Door Opens by Jeffrey Wands was a fascinating, interesting encounter with the world of spirit. It was very consoling and comforting and leaves a bereaved person with a feeling of hope and peace that our loved ones never really leave us. I have read many books on psychic phenomena and was impressed that Jeffrey Wands worked in conjunction with therapists. It was written on a very understandable ,credible level.I appreciated the religious aspects of the book and feel it offers a great amount of healing for people who have suffered recent loses. This is a fabulous and enlightening book.

I found the book refreshing. Mr. Wands actually explained some of the things that I can't seem to find in books by other famous mediums (such as ghosts, and lingering energy). I'm all for being completely positive, but if you don't know all of the facts, how can you protect yourself from the negative. Mr. Wands gives you those facts.

An excellent book to begin with..........2000-08-08

This book was the textbook for a continuing education course in Spanish that I was in. The book has clear definitions and explanations, as well as exercises to practice each new concept. The audio tape was especially helpful to review pronounciations away from class. However, only certain exercises in each section are on the audio tape. Although there are many books out there to help you learn Spanish, I have found that this one works the best!

Everything I have written in reviews of Dr. Biela's other works applies to this one as well. Only more so. It seemed inconceivable to me that Dr. Biela could outdo himself after his first three masterpieces but indeed he has.

This book will give you an overwhelming appreciation of the sacraments. It will make you miss the Eucharist every minute you are not at Mass. It will make you want to rush to confession once you realize what a beautiful gift God makes available to us.

And the key thing is that it's not about us: it's all about God. I had never before received such a clear explanation of how the sacraments are only God's action. Not the priest's action-he's only a conduit. Certainly not the recipient's action-the less we actually "do" when we receive the sacraments, the more we open up to His action. There is nothing that we actively do to reach God. If only we could explain it so clearly to our Protestant brethren.

I have never been keen on seeing the work of the devil in all of our failings and Dr. Biela seems to share my point of view. In all of his books he has hardly ever mentioned Satan, if at all. Our ego is the only real barrier that separates us from God.

This book draws upon material from his previous books and I think readers will benefit most if they read them in order. But this one probably has the most practical twist and if a person was to read only one, I think this should be it. But you would be missing out on an inestimable treasure if you didn't read the others. Plus he has a fifth book out which might yet be his best. Imagine that.

Great Spiritual Reading.......2007-01-20

I was pleasantly surprised by this book. Biela takes the process of spiritual growth to a deeper level than I have experienced and raises questions that I have not encountered in traditional Christianity. In an age where much writing on spiritual topics comes from one fringe or another, Biela's approach is clearly centrist and fundamental in the best sense of that word. I could only read a few pages at a time, since his thoughts took me a while to digest. I recommend it for anyone who is serious about their spiritual development

Nowhere to Hide.......2005-07-15

This book, Open Wide the Door to Christ, shone a bright light into some of the darkest recesses of my heart. As difficult as it has been to look at the truth I had hidden about my own weakness and sinfulness, it has also been a relief to have it brought into the light! It is a relief to know that these are the very things about me that call upon God's love and mercy. And what does it mean to follow God's will? This book shed a lot of light on that issue, as well.

What a gift for the year of the Eucharist! This book is a masterpiece!! Never before have I so clearly been able to understand what it means to hunger for holiness...hunger for the Euhcarist. As with S. C. Biela's other books, I experience a daily dialogue when I read a small passage and see how it applies to my every day life. Today GOD showed me how He is present in my work - calling me and inviting me to see this area of my life as a place for conversion and a place to receive His love.

For me, this book has opened my eyes to what true humility is, the importance of following GOD's will in my life, and the need to understand that GOD loves me ... before, now, and forever ... HE knows what is best and desires to lead me to Eternal joy! Thank you Mr. Biela!
