Book Description

Here is the revealing underground classic, a work  that stands beside the "Seth" books as a  delightful and invaluable guide to our inner  spirit and our outer world. Emmanuel speaks to us  through Pat Rodegast and shares his wisdom and  insights on all aspects of life. Beautifully written and  illustrated, Emmanuel's Book I  is to be treasured, enjoyed and passed on to a  friend. Emmanuel says: "The gifts I wish to  give you are my deepest love, the safety of truth,  the wisdom of the universe and the reality of God .  . . . The issue of whether there is a Greater  Reality or not, for me at least, has been settled. I  know that there is. So I will speak to you from  the knowing that I possess."

Ram Dass, in the  introduction, says: "Being with Emmanuel one  comes to appreciate the vast evolutionary context  in which our lives are being lived . . . And at  each moment we are at just the right place in the  journey. As Emmanuel points out, 'Who you are is a  necessary step to being who you will be.'"

5 out of 5 stars IT WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE.......2007-04-02

Someone I did not know handed me this book about 18 years ago and said, "Here I think you should read this." They were right. It changed my entire outlook on life and has been my only comfort in some very difficult times. For those who are ready to hear the truth, this is it.

5 out of 5 stars a truly expansive look at life.......2006-03-17

The gentleness and love in this book are palpable. I love looking at life through Emmanuel's eyes. He gently yet forcefully leads the reader to a sense of power and oneness.

I read this book when it first came out and recommended it to hundreds of people. Seth is a classic but Emmanuel makes it so much easier to understand the same concepts.

1 out of 5 stars Confused attitude about homosexuality.......2005-05-05

I hate to judge a book like this based on only one issue, but as a gay man, this is an important issue for me. In answer to the question "What role does homosexuality play in human relationship?", Emmanual gives the following answer (I'll use slashes instead of the poetic line breaks):

"A necessary one./It is a means of loving./It is a means of reaching for oneness./It is a means to camouflage fear./It is, in short, a path.

"It is difficult to accept unification/because you live in a world/that encourages the either-or illusion./But things are becoming more closely aligned./Many people are learning to accept/their androgynous natures./Some express it in homosexuality,/which is an overstatement, however,/because of the need to accept/the sexual structure of the physical world./Nevertheless, in the long run/it is a healthy statement in your civilization./Ultimately we are all androgynous."

Despite the apparently encouraging beginning ("It is necessary"), this passage is troubling for several reasons. Homosexuality is defined as "a means to camouflage fear," whereas heterosexual relationships are not defined thus. Next, Emmanuel seems to identify homosexuality with androgeny, which are obviously two different things. A man can be extremely masculine and gay, just as a man can be feminine in some ways and be straight.

Then Emmanuel says that homosexuality is an "overstatement," whatever that means, "because of the need to accept the sexual structure of the physical world." Emmanuel seems to be saying here that homosexuality is somehow less favorable because of an inherent heterosexual structure to the physical world.

I cannot believe that the God which Emmanuel describes throughout the book would really care or choose to distinguish between the genders of two souls who reach out to each other. Perhaps Emmanuel's views on this subject are colored by Pat Rodegast's own confused and ambivalent attitudes toward homosexuality.

Thanks but no thanks.

5 out of 5 stars Emmanuel, My Friend........2004-10-31

I bought this book 15 years ago and I have purchased several since for friends and family in circumstances when I thought they might benefit from Emmanuel's sage advice. I don't know for sure if Emmanuel is a real spirit channeling through Pat Rodegast but I do know that everything he (or she) has to say has struck the chord of Truth within me and has given me comfort and strength whenever my faith in something greater than myself begins to waiver. Emmanuel is like a brilliant, wise and loving friend that is always there if you need them. This book is like taking a deep relaxing breath. There is nothing negative about it. That is why I still have this book after all these years and why I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars A life-manual for loving souls.......2004-08-24

The 'method' of authorship of this book is sometimes referred to as 'channeling', although it must be noted the quality and variety of material claiming to be 'channeled' does vary enormously. The final 'proof' of anything can only be in its usefulness to the growth of the individual. I can only vouch that this book has served me like no other.

The word Emmanuel means 'God is with us', and if you are a soul who finds meaning and faith in the deeper reality of love, then you too may find your own divinity reflected back to you in this book.

This first Emmanuel's book is particularly striking to me in its comprehensive clarity, insight, and compassion for the human condition. The words speak directly to my humanity from the knowing light I once experienced in a 'Near Death like' experience. Emmanuel presents 'himself' as a 'spiritual entity', a being of light who has completed a whole round of incarnations on earth. He has an extraordinary depth of compassion and appreciation for the duality of human condition. One example: 'He' has a distinctly human appreciation of irony and humor, something other 'spiritual entities' may lack if they have not spent (valuable) time in the human realm.

Emmanuel's Books are presented in a question and answer format. There are few exercises as such, other than inspirations to question suffering, darkness, fear and guilt, and constant reminders of the eternal validity of love - of Self - of truth.

I have been deeply grateful for Emmanuel's wisdom in my life. Very highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A book that warms your heart.......2006-04-27

I love Emmanuel's gentle and loving way of looking at life. No matter how often I open this book I find a little gem, a nugget that lifts me to the next level.

I highly recommend this book. You can open it randomly and know you will get an insight.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiration With Smiles.......2005-09-10

Reading Emmanuel's viewpoint of our universe is inspirational and comforting and amusing. The line drawings of the illustrator are also wonderful!

5 out of 5 stars One of the top 10 books of Spiritual Wisdom I have found.......2000-07-17

Emmanuel's books are some of the best books I have found which contain real, deep spiritual truths. They present a vision of humanity and God which is totally compassionate and loving. The question is not whether these books are true. The question is whether you are ready for this truth? Many similar books are hard to digest, but this series is not. Emmanuel means "God with us," and God is truly in this series. I strongly recommend this series if you are a seeker of Truth.

1 out of 5 stars No Angels Here.......2000-02-12

This book was terrible. Boring and rambling, it seems more like an effort to cash in on people's current interest in angels than anything that could really help you. I found it answered none of life's questions for me.

5 out of 5 stars Another Gem.......1999-12-02

Who is the "Angel"? You are. That is Emmanuel's message. The book helps you to recognize your own divinity. It is definitely the same voice as the first two, but this time Emmanuel is more pressing ... maybe it is his last book. All three of his books are on my nightstand. Many, many times I have had a question, I open one of the books randomly and find the answer there.

2 out of 5 stars Not really what I expected........2005-11-17

Since I learned italian with another book from the same collection, I expected the same to happen with this book. Yet I found this one a lot less helpful. It contains too much information in one page and what's more, it is not really organized in a progressive way so you need a lot of time to pass from unit to the next one while you can grasp everything. When I switched from this book to the "Conversational Greek in 7 days" by Hara Garoufalia, I found a lot of differences in the vocabulary and the structures I had learned from the Cortina's book. So, I had to refer to other books and dictionaries to see which one was right, and I found out what the other readers say: that the first one I was using was outdated and things are not said like that anymore. Of course, some of the things I learned with this book were useful, yet I had to change some of them.

If you are looking for something easy to use, yet really helpful and reliable I strongly recommend you to buy Hara Garoufalia's book instead of this one!

2 out of 5 stars Okay if you already know basic Greek.......2005-09-15

This was the first book I bought to help me learn Greek. I was very frustrated with it from the start, and bought other books to use instead. My husband speaks Greek fluently, so between him and the other books I bought I started to get a good understanding for the basics. I decided to give this book another try, and found it easier to use the second time around, but only because I was already able to speak and read a little Greek. The main problem with the book is that it uses vocabulary from the 1950, and since in the late 70's early '80's the Greek goverment decided to stop using all but one accent the words you learn from this book and the words you would actually see in Greece do not look the same. It is also entirely too formal. I would tell my husband a new sentence I learned from the book, and he would always say that, while technically correct, no one would actually speak that way. I noticed this problem alot while in Greece this year. I could not understand questions that I had learned because people don't say them the same way over there as it is printed in the book.

4 out of 5 stars Conversational Modern Greek.......2005-08-17

Very helpfull book for students learning Greek. Contains Modern Greek language sentences and pronounciations.

2 out of 5 stars Very difficult to use.......2004-11-21

I have to disagree with the other review. I found this book very unhelpful. The main problem is that there is no way to use what you have learned, or be sure what you are learning. The book consists almost solely of dialogues (each one written in greek lettering, transliterated into english lettering, and translated, all on the same page). There is also information on sentence structure and grammar, and each dialogue chapter includes a vocabulary list.

What the book lacks is any sort of interactive component. There are no exercises. No passages to translate or questions to answer to demonstrate your understanding. The book basically expects the learner to memorize the stuff by rote, a VERY outdated method of learning languages.

While very basic, "Teach Yourself Beginner's Greek Script" is much more useful, providing plenty of exercises (most of them fun and imaginative) to support the information in each lesson.

Off to find another more advanced 'teach yourself greek' book, I guess.

5 out of 5 stars Great Way To Learn Conversational Greek Quickly.......2000-04-12

The 20 lessons consist of dialogues that incorporate key vocabulary terms and increasingly advanced grammatical structures. The lessons very capably work in cultural points that would enable an American, or any other foreign tourist for that matter, to seem much less ignorant to the natives. Most of the dialogues focus on everyday aspects of Greek life, including Transportation, Cuisine, Sightseeing, etc.). While the first 16 lessons are translated back into English (with phonetic translations to assist the student's pronunciation skills), the last 4 lessons are longer and more complex passages that are only printed in Greek so that the student can attempt on his/her own to translate and comprehend what he/she has read.

Special features of this book include guides to Greek Pronunciation and basic Greek sentence structure, a 60+ page English-Greek/Greek-English Dictionary, an Irregular Verb List with grammatical conjugations, and a 30+ page Greek Grammar guide.

I would recommend this book to anyone who needs to learn how to speak passable Greek, and only has about 2 or 3 weeks with which to do it. The edition of the book I have has a special offer for a FREE audio cassette. The book and the cassette together are an excellent way to quickly enable you to speak, read, write and understand Greek, at a reasonable level of skill.

5 out of 5 stars Review from an experienced potter.......2005-07-24

I am thrilled with this new book I recently purchased, I have had Emmanual Cooper's other books on glazing and recipes - and found them most informative and the glazes pretty true to explanation
I also have found that they are quite stable - we fire in the higher 1260.C upwards catagory and the sometimes glaze recipes unless worked out correctly can be very unstable and uninteresting.
All in all a very worthwhile book and easy to use, a definate "MUST HAVE" for your collection

For what it's worth I have spent most of my life looking for spiritual understanding and experience. And this is one of the best books I have found. I picked it up and was captured by it's wisdom, beauty and Love. For me it was like a letter from home... a very dear home where those who love me, watch and wait for my eventual return.

This book touched my heart and brightened my life. I write this in hopes that it will do the same for you.

I love you, and look forward to our reunion. --FCB

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Victorian Girl and Her Mummy.......2007-04-29

It takes about twenty minutes to read The Professor's Daughter, a charming and gorgeously illustrated graphic novel by French artists Joann Sfar and Emmanuel Guibert originally published in 1997 and recently reissued in an English translation by First Second, an imprint of Roaring Brook Press. That's more than long enough to become emotionally invested in this madcap love story featuring Lillian Bowell, the daughter of a famous Victorian Egyptologist, and Imhotep IV, a pharaoh a few thousand years her senior. Spoilers ahead ...

Imhotep is stored in a sarcophagus in the Bowell home in Paddington, awaiting delivery to the British Museum. One day Lillian dresses him in top hat and tails and takes him for a walk. Imhotep gets drunk on tea and assaults a gentleman who later turns up at the house with a policeman demanding redress. Lillian inadvertently poisons them with arsenic. When their bodies are discovered by Lillian's father, Imhotep dashes from the house with Lillian, intending to take her to Cairo. At the dock, Lillian is kidnapped by a second, sea-captain mummy who vows to stay at sea until Lillian falls in love with him.

Back in London, Imhotep is a wanted man. He manages to find a hiding place while Scotland Yard rounds up all the city's mummies. When Imhotep learns that Lillian has been taken to sea, he despairs. The sea-captain mummy discovers that Lillian's beau is a mummy and returns to London. When Lillian is reunited with Imhotep, Imhotep recognizes the sea-captain mummy as his father, Imhotep III.

They argue about Lillian, who bears a striking resemblance to the long-dead wife of Imhotep IV. Lillian concludes that Imhotep is merely using her as a substitute for his dead wife. She goes to the police and confesses to the two poisonings. Imhotep attempts to break her out of jail but gets arrested himself. At the trial, Imhotep asserts that because he is a royal personage, he must be judged by Queen Victoria herself.

Meanwhile, the professor and Imhotep III shoot each other in a brougham. The unscathed mummy (he is already dead, after all) tells the bleeding professor that he will seduce the queen and then get her to pardon their children. They manage to get past the gates of Buckingham Palace. Imhotep III, with the now-unconscious professor slung over his shoulder, crashes into the queen's room and proposes to her. When she refuses, he slings her over his other shoulder and sets off for the Tower of London, where Imhotep IV and Lillian are being held.

A scene between the lovers follows in which Lillian confesses her love to Imhotep. His father, meanwhile, pitches the queen into the Thames when he realizes that she will be of no help to him. He steals the keys to the lovers' cell, where the professor finally expires. Imhotep IV exchanges his mummy wrappings for the dead professor's clothing and the pair escapes. The professor, now encased in Imhotep's bandages, is mistaken for him and ends up under glass at the British Museum, where he is visited by Imhotep, Lillian, and their children a few years later.

Along the way, subtle points are made about cultural imperialism, class inequities, the tyranny of fathers, and women's rights during the Victorian period. "I'm an antiquity," says Imhotep IV. "I belong to the country of the one who found me." Lillian complains that she sometimes feels like a possession of her father's. At Lillian's trial, the judge must consider whether she will receive special treatment because of her social standing.

This 64-page fable moves at a cracking pace but you'll want to slow down to enjoy Guibert's elegant ink and watercolor panels. The softness of his brushwork and the impressionistic wash of browns, grays, blues, and reds are a perfect match for the sweet, loopy story. Imhotep IV may be the most dashing pharaoh ever to grace the printed page: think King Tut crossed with Fred Astaire ("dancing by the Nile, the ladies love his style") and you get the idea.

This book is a thing of beauty ... an absolute treat and a joy to read.

2 out of 5 stars One extreme to the other.......2006-08-30

This book is all about extremes. It describes lighting and materials in very simple terms and then proceeds to list the complex equations involved. There doesn't seem to be any middle ground.

I understand that metal is shiny and that tree bark is rough and bumpy. But going from that to the complex equations is quite a leap. I was hoping for a book that explained objects in relation to the settings that 3d programs like 3ds Max use to create their materials...Diffuse, Specular, Glossiness, etc. etc.

I would only recommend this book to you if you can make use of the complex equations used to produce realistic lighting.

4 out of 5 stars Review Updated.......2005-05-20

I've updated my review. I think it is worth the full fives stars, but I didn't feel like erasing it and rewriting it.

The book is really great overall, but mainly I enjoyed the fact it had a working raytracer to play with. It is nice and small and easy to play around with, and it came in very handy when I was trying some crazy technique with OpenGL.

The only downside is the book doesn't cover bump mapping. I don't know if Bump/normal mapping is 'true' lighting equation, but it's important because it allows you to use a very high detailed mesh, and than 'normal map' it so you can use a low poly mesh but preserve it's details in the lighting. If it covered bump maps I really missed it (I skipped around alot but have mostly finished the book).

Excellent book, very fun, heavy on the math (but I've seen most of it, except for equations with double factorials!). It is advanced, but for my background I'd consider it more of a an intermediate in terms of math (not graphics), but I am sure to beginners the equations would scare the tar out of them. No sweat, it isn't that hard and they walk you through it all.

5 out of 5 stars A GEM FROM A PAIR OF FRENCH CARTOONISTS.......2006-06-30

Sardine in Outer Space is the creation of a couple of two brilliant French cartoonists and writers Emmanuel Guibert and Joann Sfar. This book collects twelve stories featuring the adventures of a little girl named Sardine, her cousin Louie, and her Uncle, the pirate Captain Yellow Shoulder as they travel through space on their ship The Huckleberry with a crew of kids and battle the evil Supermuscleman and his chief henchman Doc Krok.

In the opening tale Sardine has to rescue her uncle who has been captured by the diabolical pair who are trying to force him to tell where his ship is hidden. It's up to Sardine to save the day but only after she eludes a giant space leech. In another tale, the kids are swimming on a planet made almost entirely of water called "Glug" when Sardine and Louie are captured by some honking and tooting undersea fishmen.

In "Planet Discoball" uncle Yellow Shoulder is forced to land on a planet that looks, well, just like a glittering discoball in order to re-fuel. Gas is in short supply but the Empress Laser Diskette have promised a full tank of gas to the winner of her tournament. All you have to do is dance with the slug-like Empress to win!

As you can see these are stories geared towards a younger reader, but not too young as there is some wonderfully clever humor that very young ones won't catch. That said, adults will get a kick out of these wacky antics as well as the book has a look very reminiscent of old underground comics. The colors by Walter Pezalli must also be pointed out as his bold coloring truly makes the book come alive. I found myself enjoying this book so much more than I would have ever dreamed. Unfortunately we don't often get much exposure to comics outside of the U.S. and kudos to First Second books for publishing this gem.

4 out of 5 stars Cool book!.......2006-05-24

Geared more toward children, more so the middle reader, Sardine in Outer Space is the first "graphic novel" I've reviewed.

The cartoon drawings will attract children and can be enjoyed by adults as well.

This story was translated from French by Sasha Watson. Comic authors Guibert and Sfar took turns writing the script and drawing pictures.

The heroine Sardine, her uncle Yellow Shoulder and Little Louie board the Huckleberry and blast off into space. There they encounter cosmic squid, masters of the universe, leeches, talking clouds and many evil characters. Your child would love think this is so cool.

Supermuscleman is the evil guy and with his helper Doc Krok, they chase Sardine and friends. The story line also includes manners, moral stories and human--teaching and reinforcing messages.

About one character they say, "He is so brave," to which another says, "No, that's just his job." Another chimes in, "But he is NOT crazy."

Many of the space-age characters will remind you of the Star Wars space mutants.

Armchair Interviews says: If your child is imaginative and enjoys quirky things they will like Sardine in Outer Space, a good example these new graphic novels (that means a comic bound like a book).

Even though I'm an adult, I have to admit I really love these books. Sardine 2 is as good as the first, and the kids I know who've read it agree (my friend's a teacher, and has shown them to her class). I think Sardine is a terrific role model for young girls--kick butt!
