You can feel every second of each page as the story goes. The characters were well developed so I felt like I knew them. It is easy to read except for some of the character names.

Poorly Done.......2006-12-10

Barron's book is immaturely written - despite the age and experience of the author. The characters are one-dimensional and annoying in their sexist interpretation: the women are nurturing, overly emotional, and nag the men constantly whereas the men are stolid protectors doing what they must do while trying to understand the irrational women they are surrounded by. The plot is thin and poorly laid out without any forethought, and the bad guys are humorous in their stupidity and greed. The author has been spending too much time on a role playing server for World of Warcraft.

As fantastic as its first part.......2006-08-12

T.A. Barron's imagination is truely great. This book is the 2nd of a GREAT Trilogy.
The first book (TGTA: Child of the dark prophetcy) not only introduces you to the main characters but gets them well started on their magical journey. This book continues that journey only with GREATER expectations, since this is the great auther of the "Merlin" series, you know there is going to be dragons, ooo yea.

Also the way this book ends litterally leavs you hanging, I mean I got a hold of the first 2 books in 2005 and I've been waiting since then for the third book to come out, thats how good this book is, I've read books before that stop in the middle of something just so that you would get the next one, but they are NO comparesson to this great book. You can litterally see everything he's describing.

T.A. Barrons writting is very poetic, gentle and descriptive all at once, combined with his vivid imagination, its a perfect 10.

You HAVE to read the 1st book in order to understand this world and the mission all these characters are on, you will be lost if you don't.
I recommend buying all 3 at once, and since the third one (TGTA: The eternal flame) is coming out on Aug 16th I believe, you have no excuse.

Trust me, you will want the books with you back to back, its an intense read, it will keep you on your toes and then some.

Book Two is amazing!.......2006-03-03

This book was amazing! Simply amazing. I loved every part of it. The strong characters were portrayed well, and I felt like I knew them like I had grown up listening to their tales. This book gave me so many different feelings, I was frustrated, sad, and happy, right along with the characters. This book is wonderful, and I'd recommend it to any reader, any age that could handle it. The best ages for this book would probably be 12 to until you lose your eyesight. There's no sexuality or foul language. This book was excellent and I can't wait for the third one in the trilogy to come out!

Back for the second installment of "The Great Tree of Avalon" series are Tamwyn, Elli, Brionna, Scree and Nuic. The voyagers we all came to know in the first book have now become a close-knit group ... until they discover they have to separate and go on their own journeys to save the great world of Avalon. Armed with Merlin's staff, Tamwyn ventures through the trunk of the Great Tree looking for his lost father, Krystallus Eopia, who he became separated from when he was young. Along the way he encounters mystical creatures, some new, and some old with a twist. Tamwyn battles everything on his dangerous climb from giant termites to fire angels to waterfalls-until he reaches Merlin's knothole, which gives him a close and exhilarating view of the stars. Barron describes this scene vividly, and it is my favorite moment in the book. It compares favorably to laying your eyes on the Colorado Rockies for the first time, or the Grand Canyon, or any other of life's great natural monuments. Not long after he finds the knothole, Tamwyn discovers the truth of his father and why the stars in the constellation resembling Merlin's staff have gone out. Elli, in the meantime, takes a crystal of elano from the Lady of Lake, and will dive into the world of Shadowroot, the dark side of the Great Tree. There she will battle the sorcerer Kulwych, to destroy the corrupted crystal of elano that he wields for his warlord spirit master Rhita Gawr. And as for the last adventurer, the eagleman Scree, he confronts his own kind to lead them away from the war in which they were enlisted to aid Kulwych. There is one surprise in Scree's quest he regrets learning too late, and it will forever haunt him. Barron's rich portrayal of the Avalon world is described with even greater detail in this new installment, and will give readers' memories a grand story to cling to for decades to come.

Great New Fantasy!.......2007-05-01

It's so refreshing when a novel comes along that grabs you from the outset and won't let go. Such was my experience with "Choices Meant for Gods." The characters are as real as the author can make them without literally leaping from the pages to be with the reader. Instead, the reader is drawn inexorably into Lender's new world, where even gods are "human." I hope that many more readers can have the opportunity to enjoy this marvelous work!

Too many fantasy authors are re-hashing the same old plots, acted out by the same old tired heroes and heroines. Here we have a refreshing new take on things! I love that Chariss is both someone I can identify with and whom I can dream about becoming. . . it's what fantasy is all about!

This book has a great deal to offer. It is good fantasy. It is good writing, period. The pace is fast, the characters well-crafted and compelling. The treatment of the gods and their interaction with mortals is original. My big complaint is that I must wait for the sequel(s) to learn the outcome.

Great new book and author!.......2007-04-12

I love fantasy books, read them most of my life, and found this one to be a fresh and inviting book. I was captivated by the characters and got involved in their story very quickly. It keep my attention through out, and had enough twists and turns that I was keep guessing, which is a good thing.

I would recommend this book to anyone that loves a great story. The only thing bad...that it was over to fast. Can't wait for the sequal to come out!

What would you do..........2007-04-10

If all of your life had been spent on the run? And you suddenly found yourself confronted with someone that makes you want to stay put? This is what happens to Amanda Chariss when she and her protector Hrazon find their latest refuge in Hleo-Arcana and she meets Nigel Taiman.

This is a fantastic tale of a young girl with very special gifts who has a higher calling than she could ever have imagined. And the man she meets that may change her life forever. But will it be for better or for worse? He has secrets of his own. And the tale is told by one of the very Gods that may have helped to guide and protect Chariss from the madman that is chasing her had they but known of her existence earlier. But they stopped paying attention.

I have been a fantasy/sci-fi reader for a very long time now and this is one of the most original stories that I have come across in years. The characters are creative and fresh. The way that Ms Lender has all of her characters interact either when being deadly serious or playfully teasing each other is refreshing and real. Be they God or mortal they have flaws and make mistakes just like everyone else. And eventually will pay the price or feel the consequences of their actions.

I honestly had the hardest time putting this book down (just ask my boss when I was late coming back from lunch). It starts off at a fast pace and never slows down. And when I finally came to the end of it I was devastated that it was over and I would have to wait for the sequel to see what happens next.

I recommend this book to everyone that loves a beautifully crafted fantasy story. It has a little something for everyone and will leave you wanting the sequel as soon as possible.

This is a wonderful first book to the trilogy of The Great Tree of Avalon. I have purchased the second book and can't wait to read it. I bought this book for my son because the author was at a conference I was attending and signing autographs. I thought an autographed book would be a unique gift. My son read it and loved it so I decided to read it also. I was immediately drawn into the story and could identify with the characters. I was kept guessing until the end whether Tam was the heir of Merlin or the child of the dark prophesy. Will he be able to change what is prophesied, as the Lady of the Lake told him? Will he be able to save Avalon? I can't wait to read the next book to find out what is in store for Tam.

Excellent Resource.......2006-12-10

Perry has done a wonderful job in untangling the very intricate tale woven by J.R.R. Tolkien. Of particular help are the copious margin notes which reference exactly where Perry is drawing the information contained within that section of his book. The commentary made by the author is a welcomed pause for reflection on the events that are taking place and keep the book from being a mere listing of dates and events. I teach a course on J.R.R. Tolkien and have found Untangling Tolkien a valuable resource, since it covers the entire history of Middle-earth: what comes before The Hobbit and what takes place after The Lord of The Rings. Bravo Mr. Perry, I look forward to reading your other books.

Knits up the ravels.......2004-10-31

An amazing accomplishment by a dedicated Tolkien fan.

That is how I'd sum up the book Untanging Tolkien. Michael Perry has first unraveled all Tolkien's "dates" -- which can be extrapolated from phases of the moon -- and then knit them together again in a cohesive outline, presented in much greater detail than Tolkien's own timeline (found buried in Appendix A of LOTR). By incorporating information from other Tolkien writings, the author of Untangling Tolkien collates additional facts about all the characters and the circumstances surrounding the War of the Ring, folding them all into this detailed chronology. He includes material that sheds light on possible parallels between Tolkien's work and events that were contemporary, and he provides original commentary that suggests some additional motivations for Tolkien's characters. Sidebars offer references to every source for the information presented and for each conclusion the author has drawn.

I found the format, with quick-reference bulleted lists and clearly delineated sections and subheadings, well-organized and easy to use.

NOTE: I read the third printing that was published in May 2004. Apparently the author has corrected many of the errors that David Bratman objected to (below). You won't find a better overview or a more throrough treatment of time and dates in LOTR than Perry provides in this book.

A Radiograph of LotR........2003-12-27

This book is layed out as a chronological record of the events covered by Tolkein's masterpiece with prefaces that explain the calender system created by Tolkein and its conversion to our more mundane (and possibly inferior) system. The type is clear, and margin citations clear and present for every entry. It's primary utility, at which it succeeds admirably, is as a kind of radiograph of Tolkein's work that reveals its astonishing complexity more clearly and allows one to admire, and more importantly, explore the book itself more quickly, easily, and deeply.

The book also contains copious notes inline with the chronology. These vary from informative to tangential, but at worst do not detract from the book's primary function. Mr. Perry is perhaps foremost as Lewis scholar, and so C.S. Lewis, a close acquaintance and friend of Tolkein, makes a number of appearances. Also making appearances in the notes are William Shakespeare and Winston Churchill.

All in all, a unique book which will save anyone who wants to do an in depth study of LotR a lot of time.

Splendid Tolkien Reference Work.......2003-12-21

Superb, exhaustive chronology of Tolkien's Lord of the Rings saga. Perry does a superior job in untangling a number of thorny chronological issues in Tolkien's narrative, and he employs some fine literary detective work in reconstructing what events are happening across Middle Earth on any given date. Especially admirable is his reconstruction of how much moonlight there was during each day of Frodo and Sam's journey into Mordor.

In addition to chronology, Perry supplies a lot of background information about Tolkien's themes and sources, as well as biographical tidbits about Tolkien. For example, there are fascinating discussions of Tolkien's views of technology, freedom, and totalitarianism. Perry also discusses Tolkien's stance toward the misuse of Germanic myths by the Nazis.

This is a great resource for Tolkien-lovers everywhere.

a giant mass of undifferentiated trivia.......2003-12-21

A year-by-year, later day-by-day, chronicle of the war against Sauron from the founding of the Shire to the glorious conclusion seems at the outset like a good idea. Perry calls LOTR's Appendix B, the Tale of Years, "far from complete" but it covers the whole period: what he means is that it's not detailed enough for him. Appendix B won't tell you which day Sam cooked coney for Frodo; Perry will.

But alas, the book does not stop there. The entries are written as bullet lists like a PowerPoint presentation, and many add pointless little flowcharts such as two-generation family trees. They reduce Tolkien's magnificently complex subcreation into a giant mass of undifferentiated trivia. And each yearly or daily entry comes with its commentary, whether directly relevant, side points, broader considerations, or dogmatic essays in applicability. The unrelieved banality and inappropriateness of these must be read to be believed; as also the author's clumsy, grammatically inept style, and his smug superiority to the characters. (He frequently criticizes the good guys' "blunders," all of them more complex than he implies.)

There's actually some good chronological analysis and speculation hiding in here. But how can someone who knows his Tolkien that well say that the wizards were Valar, or that Rohan gave Isengard to Saruman (it wasn't theirs to give, and Saruman was made its warden, not a freeholder), that Boromir and Faramir had a sibling rivalry (Tolkien specifically says not), or suggest that Galadriel should have sent daily eagles to check up on the Fellowship?

Near Perfect.......1999-08-18

The Shadow Eater was simply outstanding through the first 200 pages. I found myself hanging on every word.

Unfortunately the next 100 or so, though interesting, wasn't as good. Lee made the unusual choice of making The Dark Shore of the first novel into Earth. Perhaps I'm missing something (and that's very possible) but I don't see too many cacodemons in my city.

THis was a good read, but not as exciting( I thought) as The Dark Shore. I didn't live up tomy expectations.

Excellent, Unpredictable Fantasy by a Superb Author.......2007-05-03

Susan Dexter has done it again. Every prediction I had about the plot in this story turned out to be WRONG, much to my enjoyment! I had dragged my feet on purchasing this book due to the dismal review given it on Amazon, and finally ordered it when I ran out of everything else this author had written. I literally could not put this book down. The plotting is deft and the humor is wonderful. I found the protagonist to be delightful--down to earth, simple, self-deprecating, loyal to a fault. Other characters came clearly into focus as the book moved along until the startling revelations in the last few pages. As an old "Ring of Allaire" fan, the nod given to her previous Tristan trilogy made this a special treat as well. I haven't had this much fun with a book since... well maybe since the Riddle Master trilogy!

Stunning Fantasy Adventure!.......2003-10-30

Crocken the peddler knew that he made a bad bargain the instant he agreed to the wizard's "request", but he really had no choice. If he did not agree to take the murdered wizard's shadow to the distant country of Armyn, the wizard would let him die of starvation. Crocken grudgingly took the wizard's shadow instead of his own and set out to make the best of it. With the shadow literally hounding his every step, Crocken made the long journey and finally arrived in the country of Armyn only to be faced with the seemingly impossible task of gaining entry into the fortress of Axe-Edge and gathering information from the royal court that resided there. As luck would have it, Crocken managed to save a princess from a wild boar and he found himself hailed as a heroic merchant-adventurer, instead of a luckless peddler without a penny to his name. Crocken thought that he had amply fulfilled his part of the bargain, but the shadow needed him and was not ready to release him.

So Crocken found himself drawn into the intrigues of the court and trying desperately to understand why the shadow bore such hatred for the steward-protector, Rhisiart, who seemed to be a noble and honorable man. Nor could Crocken understand what Prince Kieron was. He appeared to be a man, but evil deeds followed in his wake, always cleverly covered up by his mother, the dowager queen Sulien, but the court heard whispers of deaths and strange habits. Then there was the lovely Mistress Ivy, handmaiden to the princess betrothed to Prince Kieron. She seemed to be privy to more information that Crocken, but he was not sure if he wanted to be involved in her schemes, either. As Crocken finds himself more and more involved in the lives of the ruling class of Armyn, he risks everything that he has to make a difference and to bring some sense of peace to the wizard's shadow so that they both can move on...

This was another wonderful book by Susan Dexter. I simply loved the main characters and was definitely not ready to let them go - I would love a sequel to this book! Anyway, it was also fun to find out that the princess was one of Tristan's daughters (The Ring of Allaire, The Sword of Calandra, and The Mountains of Channadran) so that we had a brief glimpse of what he was like as a father. The plot flowed well and had plenty of intriguing little subplots to keep the reader occupied and busy trying to guess who was doing what and where to whom and why. I inhaled the book and now will have to go back and enjoy it again!

An excellent concept. The book had enough twists and turns to keep you guessing and your attention focused. I was hoping for a sequel; wondering what would happen next.

Interesting fantasy reworking of Richard III.......1998-12-16

I found myself wondering how much one could get out of this book without appreciating that it is at heart a revisionist, and rather fulfilling, fantasy of Richard the Third. The writing is good, the story exciting, the fantasy characters sympathetic and the historical immediately recognisable and great fun, so I'm sure you don't need to know much about the Wars of the Roses to enjoy the story, but if you do, you should definitely give the book a try.

Surprising, original, facinating!.......1998-08-15

A stand-alone book that I wasn't ready to be finished with. A reluctant hero, a tricky dead wizard who might not really be that bad (but who is definately inconvienient), the true (but unknown) villain, and a journey to find the answer to the burning mystery of who killed the magician. It was not the typical plot and has the advantage of covering the fantasy, adventure, supernatural, and mystery genres well. It is similar to Robert Asprin's "Myth" series - Ya gotta love it and I gotta read it again!
