A perfect ending to a wonderful series.......2006-08-22
KRITZER TIME is the last of the Kritzer trilogy and takes Benjamin through high school. It is in this volume that Benjamin really comes into his own. At the hated summer camp Benjamin discovers his love of acting and finds that he's quite good at it as well, getting the attention and praise that was previously so absent. His piano lessons give him the background he needs to start writing his own songs, and he begins performing in community theatre. We are thrilled for Benjamin as he succeeds in his various endeavors.
Benjamin, of course, has already discovered girls, and his many love affairs are tender and sweet, as he learns more of love and life. One can't help but recall one's first kiss and reminisce over young romance. Benjamin reminds us how special, how touching, young love can be.
I enjoyed, too, recalling TV wrestling--Haystack Calhoun, The Destroyer, and my personal favorite, Tricky Ricky Starr. What fun those shows were!
Some reviewers see this trilogy as a story of loss. I do not. I see it as one of resilience. There are losses, of course, but Benjamin is never down long. Like his favorite wrestlers, he's up and at 'em in no time. The entire trilogy is a charming tale of an extremely talented young man, at odds with the world, who finds his calling (callings, actually, since his talents span so much ground)and finds himself, all to the reader's great pleasure.
Funny, sad, poignant, touching, and, most of all, charming. You won't want it to end.
Benjamin , Happy at Last.......2005-10-26
In this, the third and final (well so far!) book about Benjamin Kritzer, our hero moves from adolescence to young adulthood, with all the horrors, angst, agonies, sweet memories and hilariously funny mishaps that I, looking back, can remember from my own `growing up".
Once again reading this book I had the eery feeling that somehow Mr. Kimmel had interviewed everyone who ever knew me during my high school years and simply transposed my experiences to his character.
This book is by no means just for the nostalgic, I highly recommend it to any teenager, especially those that insist, "Things are different now, you just don't understand what I'm going through.". Oh, we do, we do! Mr. Kimmel's lovingly crafted book and his familiar feeling characters shows that there is a light at the end of high school!!
Benjamin Kritzer, the fish out of water, the odd duck, finally discovers his niche and comes into his own in this book Although this is a wonderful book on its own, I urge you to read the series in order as it will greatly enhance your enjoyment of this wonderfully and simply told story.
Kritzer Time.......2004-06-15
A perfect end to the Kritzer trilogy, "Kritzer Land" concludes this wonderful series by leaving the reader with a clear understanding of Benjamin's future. After following his life through this spectacular trilogy, the reader is able to say goodbye to Benjamin and be completely happy for him. In "Kritzer Time", author Bruce Kimmel uses the same appropriatly youthful diction that made his other two books so exciting to demonstrate Benjamin's entrance into adulthood in a poignant and moving fashion. On par with such great growing up sagas as "A Seperate Peace" and "My Name Is Asher Lev", the Kritzer series is a realistic interpretation of the growing up experience that is truly a vital part of any individual or community's library.
A THIRD INSTALLMENT.......2004-05-15
I refuse to see Mr Kimmel's Kritzer books as three novels but three sections of a great biographical novel, just as Mr Dickens, Mr Dumas and others wrote large-scale novels in installments. The three Benjamin Kritzer novels are Mr Kimmel's DAVID COPPERFIELD, and just as crammed with eccentrics, villains, saints, and heroes. KRITZER TIME resonates on many levels: Benjamin Kritzer, our eponymous hero, progresses through high school, develops more of his talents, endures more losses and gains, suffers more humiliation and embarassment from his Martian family, learns to love, learns he is not alone in the scheme of the cosmos, and comes out a winner. We've all been there and we've all suffered our adolescent angst, but we should all suffer with such excellent humor.
A great read!.......2004-04-27
KRITZER TIME, the third in a trio of semi-autobiographical books by actor, singer, writer Bruce Kimmel was a journey down memory lane for me! Although I did not grow up in Los Angeles in the 1960s, as did young Benjamin Kritzer, the star of all three Kritzer books (the first two being BENJAMIN KRITZER and KRITZERLAND, I was still able to identify with the joys, the fears, and the delights that Benjamin Kritzer experienced in this journey through his teen years.
If you ever thought of yourself as somewhat different (and what teenager didn't); if you ever had a love of movies, music, and/or the theater; if you ever hated gym class; if you ever had a family you were certain came from Mars, then you will love this book, as well as the first two in the series!
You will laugh...a lot, and you might even cry a bit as you experience life as only Benjamin Kritzer (and Bruce Kimmel) can describe it!
