A little on the frivolous side, but so is the wedding!.......2007-06-28
I bought this as a gift for my newly engaged sis-in-law, so she could look at all the pictures and get into the excitement of wedding planning. I wouldn't buy this for myself, but it worked as a gift : )
Awe-Inspiring Weddings & Unique Event Ideas.......2007-06-27
Cover to cover, this is an exceptional book!! The photos of these spectalular weddings are gorgeous, and the creativity and attention to detail that Colin Colin used in creating these lavish events is incredible. Each wedding is unique and personal. At the end of each wedding chapter, Colin provides the event layout and some pointers. I found this to be really helpful. While I don't have a million dollar budget, I have truly found some million dollar ideas that I can incorporate into the wedding that I am planning. And the beautiful book looks great even when it's just sitting on the coffee table!! Overall, I would highly recommend this book to anyone planning a wedding - either a bride, groom, or wedding planner! Thank you, Colin Cowie!
A feast for the senses..........2007-05-18
While the weddings depicted in this book are far out of most people's budget, the pictures are stunning - and the words describing the extraordinary events are even more so. This would make a beautiful coffee table book. An engaged couple is sure to be inspired - and can perhaps afford to even incorporate one or two of Cowie's ideas. Stunning.
Absolutly stunning!!!!!.......2007-05-09
This gorgeous hot pink book has everything for a fantasy wedding. True inspiration for making this event unforgetible. Everything in details. I like the way Colin Cowie helps to choose theme first and add personal characteristics of bride and groom, their culture, favorite flowers, colors and food. This book absolutly worth it to buy and would be useful for any big event.
He's Done It Again!.......2007-03-25
Beautiful and inspiring! Great ideas not only for weddings but for personalizing dinner parties and other social get togethers. A bit pricey but delivers!

Customer Reviews:
A perfect resource for aspiring and established writers!.......2007-04-11
I put this book to use the very same week I bought it. One of my creative writing students at the local university where I teach was having problems writing dialogue. When I met with him, I brought along my "Building Blocks" book. In addition to what I had to say, it was great to offer him the advice of some of my favorite writers, including Charles Baxter, Amy Bloom and Dick Bausch. I felt as though I was leading him down the corridors of the ultimate English department, and every door was open.
The excerpts are golden nuggets of writing wisdom: short, conversational and enlightening. I'll definitely consider using this book as a required course text in the future. It covers everything I need to address in my writing class: point of view, voice, place and setting, character, description, use of language, dialogue, etc. - without sounding repetitive or pedantic. The variety of voices, perspectives, interviews and excerpts keep the topics interesting and fresh.
As a writer myself, I've found that the book offers more than just "building blocks." I turn to the book when I'm feeling stuck, and when I need to get a fresh perspective on the craft. It's often helpful to remind myself that even the best writers experience roadblocks and frustrations. Unlike a lot of books on writing, this one tells it like it is, while at the same time offering helpful strategies and techniques -- from writing a novel for the first time to paragraph breaks and punctuation.
Excellent guide to writing fiction! A Must Have!.......2006-12-08
I am absolutely thrilled with my copy of The Glimmer Train Guide to Writing Fiction! To see "inside the head" for so many esteemed writers is valuable beyond words. The back cover says, "Many writing books offer instruction and inspiration, but never before has one pulled back the curtain and laid bare before you the joys, frustrations, struggles, and achievements of the literary life -- as experienced by more than one hundred accomplished writers." How very true! Anyone who is a writer, aspires to be a writer, and anyone who just plain enjoys reading will find this book to be a treasure. This book is a definite "must have!"

- Ethical Realism: A Vision for America's Role in the World
ASIN: 0231123493 |
Book Description
The Second World War put an end to America's historical isolation from international power politics, and so also to the long-standing American defiance of the Realist ideology that shaped Old World affairs. The advent of transoceanic military technologies, now wielded by menacing states such as Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union, made Americans more receptive to the Realist idea that international relations is about fear and survival. The American Realists Reinhold Niebuhr, Hans Morgenthau, and Kenneth Waltz developed a modern strategic framework that sought to introduce American leaders and the educated public to these harsher realities of international politics. They emphasized a clear-eyed, cold approach to the play of interests, egotism, and the drive for power in world affairs -- a struggle in which the threat of major war remained, in the end, the only legitimate currency.
Yet even as Americans began to accept this new Realism, thermonuclear weaponry threatened to make it absurd. A major war to defend the nation might result in its total destruction; a thermonuclear war leading to the death of hundreds of millions of citizens seemed an unusual way to preserve American survival. This dilemma became central to the Realist understanding of Niebuhr, Morgenthau, and Waltz. How could a Realist approach to international politics and war be sustained in the face of possible global annihilation?
Glimmer of a New Leviathan is the engrossing story of how the three chief architects of an influential ideology struggled with the implications of their own creation. It offers crucial historical context for contemporary debates about weapons of mass destruction and the post-Cold War international order.

Survey Our Literary Landscape From the Open Window of Glimmer Train
What drives you to write? How does a particular piece of writing come to exist?
In Inspiration and Discipline, the second volume in our Glimmer Train Guide to Writing Fiction series, more than one hundred accomplished authors set aside talk of character and scene in order to address the more private and elusive aspects of their writing lives. In excerpts from interviews conducted over a seventeen-year period and preserved by the editors of the highly respected literary quarterly Glimmer Train Stories and its supplement Writers Ask, contemporary writers offer insights on such topics as family support (or lack thereof), using autobiographical material, and the responsibility of writing--sharing their own personal and philosophical approaches to this most strange, heartbreaking, and wonderful of artistic vocations.
