Highly recommend!.......2007-05-29
Ordered this book to conduct a Bible Study class along with the VCR tape and online classes. I will be reading ALL his books and recommending that our study group conduct classes on each of them.
This book is for anyone serious about really understanding the Old Testament and God's plan for us.
RCIA.......2006-11-10
Very helpful for teaching the RCIA class on Covenants and Salvation History for the People of God. The puns in the chapter titles are humorous, but Scott's version of the Bible stories had me laughing out loud. The section on Abraham and Sarah was especially funny, and Scott makes the story very relevant and understandable for today.
The Bible in a Book.......2006-09-28
As a parish director of adult faith formation, this is a book that I am continually placing orders for and promoting among my adult students in the parish. Why? Because this text is what I like to call "The Bible in a book." Scott Hahn, Ph.D. has taken years of his personal research and blended it with his unique writing style, which is accessible to the average layperson - not reserved for the Biblical scholar. The result is a text that summarizes Salvation History in 290 pages from an authentically Catholic, orthodox perspective.
Having read this text 4 times from front to back and sections many more times over, this is one of my all time favorite "Catholic" books. Each time I pick it up, it is as if I haven't read it before.. because it is so densely packed with great information. This text was my first real introduction to the Bible as an undergraduate student studying business. It lead me to further study and eventually to an M.A. in Theology, studying under Dr. Hahn himself at the Franciscan University of Steubenville.
One of the gems of this book is the compilation of endnotes in the back of the book, backed with references to Biblical scholarship. If these endnotes were sold as a separate book for the same price as the book itself, I would spend the money on them - they're that great. They really help the reader understand where Dr. Hahn gets concepts such as the firstborn sons of Israel holding a priestly office (before Exodus 32), Melchizedek's identification as "Shem" who outlived Abraham by 35 years, how the plagues wrought upon Egypt through Moses were judgements against each of Egypt's golds (e.g. the Nile, Frogs, Bulls, Rams), how the sacrifices of the Mosaic Law were physical renunciations of Egyptian idolatry (Egyptians worshipped those animals Israel was commanded to sacrifice), and the nature of Deuteronomy as a compilation of concessionary, lesser laws that permitted sins such as divorce/remarriage, usury, and the sort of warfare Israel perpetrated against the Canaanites.
Get this book.. it is worth well more than the few dollars Amazon charges for it!
A great book for beginners.......2006-03-20
This was my fist book about scripture I have ever read. It was very enjoyable. It help me with the basics. It was very helpful to learn about the different covenants.
A covenantal stroll through (salvation) history.......2006-02-27
Dr. Hahn has always been my favorite theologian. He writes in a way that I can "get" the first time though. This particular volume is an arrow-straight shot through the first six covenants of salvation history. Despite the fact that I have been reading loads of books on this topic, this easy-to-read book STILL has new insights to give me! My favorite is the correlation between the animals that the Egyptians (and many Israelites) worshipped during the Israelites' 400-year stay there and the animals both destroyed by plagues and subsequently ritually sacrificed on Israelite altars. God tries hard to sever the worhsip link between those gods (represented by the animals) and His people. Now all those years of animal sacrifices make sense AND why it was no longer necessary in the new Covenant in Jesus' time. It was a particular discipline for a particular time. Neat!
I recommend this book highly!

In 1995, two years after his grandfather whispered the name of his great-great-grandfather's killer to him, Frank Viviano visited Sicily to learn the events that shaped his namesake's life and strongly influenced his own. Nicknamed "The Monk" for the garments he wore while robbing the rich and bureaucratic, Viviano's ancestor left little for the experienced foreign correspondent to follow. Plus, the slow-jolt journey of Sicilian lifestyles often ended in polite reticence or remarkable disorganization; even rudimentary information, such as his predecessor's gravesite, was lost. In a "morbid tidying up," Mussolini's local officials removed the remains of all pre-Fascists: "In their zeal to launch the new millennium, the fascisti hadn't bothered to keep lists of the disinterred. The old tombstones were dumped into the sea, next to the limestone blocks that the fishermen referred to as 'Atlantis.'"
In between assignments in Bosnia and the West Bank, Viviano learned to take a less direct approach. Guided by stories told to him in his childhood by his grandmother, he demystifies the region's bandit-rebel history, its current life under the sistema, and its creation of the modern Italian mafia. Viviano was already aware of his family's supposed connections to the mafia, causing him to look more carefully at the times that produced these men. In the process, he began to take a closer look at his own personal life:
The dramatic narrative of ancestry is not erased by immigration. It is driven into a clandestine realm where setting and characters are only dimly recalled, or transformed into fairy-tale heroes and villains in the landscape of fable. The Monk, in this sense, had withdrawn into my grandparents' tales and the isolated recesses of my imagination, into hidden canyons where I could not directly confront him.
Suspenseful and well balanced, Blood Washes Blood is an exciting and thoughtful page-turner, a remarkable story of family, mystery, and friendship. Viviano's writing is at its best when he follows the complicated trail of his family's past, and falters only slightly when he attempts to imagine his ancestor's life. --Karin Rosman
Book Description
Against the sweeping backdrop of western Sicily, in a riveting seven-year quest, Frank Viviano pieces together his own harrowing ancestral history of betrayal and redemption. His take is haunted, from its violent opening to its stunning climax, by an ancient Sicilian proverb, Lu sangu lava lu sangu, "Blood washes blood": the torrent of unforgiving vengeance that flows from an unforgivable offense.
Viviano's great-great grandfather was a legendary bandit who traveled the countryside of Sicily by night in the robes of a friar and was known as "the Monk." His brutal murder has remained shrouded in mystery for four generations. Until now.
Populated by an extraordinary cast of nineteenth-century Robin Hood brigands and twentieth-century underworld bosses, here is a true-life Godfather, in which past and present finally merge into a single story with a shattering climax that ultimately changes the way the author views his immigrant family's complex legacy -- and himself.

Gorgeous Writing, This Book Will Help You Understand Sicily.......2007-04-12
I read this book when in first came out five years ago. For work and pleasure, I have probably read over 100 books about Italy in the intervening years and this book is still one of the best. I just re-read the first page and got chills. The writing is eloquent, the story incredible (and all the more so because it is true) and the sense of place Viviano evokes is so compelling. If you want to understand Sicily, the history of rural Italy, the confusing legacy of the Old World for many Italian-Americans, read this book. If you just want to read a great piece of narrative non-fiction, read this book. I'm planning on re-reading it.
Now I understand my father........2005-09-11
My sister gave all of us a copy of this book and she said we needed to read it to understand who were are. She was right. My father was born in Palermo and came to the United States at the age of 14. He was a wonderful family man who loved his wife of 58yrs and his 4 daughters. But, he was a complicated man and at times, very secretive. Now I understand. He told us of his transition into the American life and I thought he was embellishing because he was a great story teller, but now I understand the hardships, the backbreaking work, and the joys of providing for his family. After reading this book, I am even prouder to say when asked, "No, I'm not Italian-American, I am Sicilian-American."
Fantastic!.......2004-08-08
I highly recommend Blood Washes Blood. While it may be a bit dark and heavy for a summer read, it is definitely worth any time or money spent in the endeavor.
Mr. Viviano has a gift with non-fiction unlike any other writer of this genre I have ever read. His story unfolds like a novel, fascinating in its characters and settings and yet all the more immediate because it is true.
Mr. Viviano traces his family's history and his own journey of self-discovery through the winding streets of Sicily, uncovering a few secrets and finding even more along the way.
At times his prose is almost too real, too painful and private, but it creates an intense bond with the reader.
In short, don't pick up this book expecting a quick read. Yes, it is riveting, but at times a little overwhelming as well. The highest praise I can give Blood Washes Blood was that it left me with plenty to think about once it was finished, and a lingering interest in Sicily and its history.
Mr. Vivano has had articles recently in publications such as National Geographic, and I highly recommend readers to search out more of his work. You won't be disappointed.
Fascinating.......2003-07-19
Having come of age in St. Louis, and marrying into a Sicilian American family, all the "old stories" and legends were the makings for any family get together. Blood Washes Blood brought so many of the old stories to life and was even more compelling to read than The Godfather because it was a family with a familiar name.
On his deathbed, Frank Viviano's grandfather whispers an old family secret to him. The secret leads Mr. Vivano, back to Sicily and to a search for answers that seem to elude him. His curiosity as a foreign correspondent for the San Francisco Chronicle well prepares him to do the research and fuel his interest in exploring what happened to the great grandfather known as The Monk.
My husband and his brothers recently traveled to Sicily and spent several days in Terrasini and Cinisi looking into old records of their ancestors. Unfortunately their trip took place before we discovered Blood Washes Blood. Mr. Viviano turns the old stories into living history. Thanks for the book, our family all enjoyed reading it.
One of the best books I've ever read.......2003-07-19
This book is the most evocative, brilliant book I have read in years. (And as an English professor , I have read a lot.) First, it is an autobiographical story of a first generation Sicilian American who can find no peace in our restless, rootless culture. He goes to Sicily to find his roots, and more to find the answer to a family mystery of murder. But that is just the skeleton. The book moves on several levels simultaneously: the personal quest; the nature of Sicilian culture described with a spirit of place that would have done D.H. Lawrence proud; the historical origins of the systema or Mafia told without bias, realistically and sympathetically and the story of the modern destruction of folklife everywhere. All of these strands are woven more brilliantly than any novel I have read in years. And this is not a novel; it is truth. If I may add on a personal note: I am the widow of a first generation Sicilian American whom I loved and tried to understand for over 40 years. This book has helped pull together some of the puzzling pieces of the Sicilian character. Please Mr. Viviano, please use your enormous talent to write more books of this type.

Edge Of Your Seat Read!!!.......2007-04-16
This story will keep you on the edge of your seat with the drama that occurs in this book! I loved it and didn't put it down until I finished it. I especially loved the ending and I hope that Kimberley will write a story about Special Agent Nicolai Montgomery. I would love to learn more about him and his special abilities to solve crimes.
Could not put this one down!!!.......2007-02-01
All I can truly say about this books was that it is pretty much my favorite. This was an expertly written book and actually had a great inner story. The FBI agent was brilliant and the police drama was almost too real. Being a cop myself I have to say that this was a homerun. The relationship between Mark and Maya hit home with me and was so true to life. I loved the way they related to one another, and what can I say about the love scenes other than. Super HOT!! Love it!!!
Good Start Need More Work.......2007-01-23
I think this book had promise but I think it was greatly distracted by the murder mystery backstory. I do not think mystery is this writer's strengh and I think it took away from her being able to really develop her strong storyline about two unlikely but interesting character's who meet by fate and discover an incredible mutual attraction. I think that the kind of attraction Ms. Terry wanted us to believe was happening between the main characters would have been more convincing if she had developed them more and worked on creating better and believable dialogue, sometimes the exchange between the two main character's were difficult to read because it seemed contrived, you just were not feeling their passion in spite of their frequent lovemaking. The tension was lost between these two which would have made for better chemistry and more explosive sexual encounters. I was really hoping for that as their relationship progressed. At one point I felt Mark was getting the short end of the stick in the relationship. Mark was a patient and considerate lover but Maya never demonstrates her own sexual confidence, even though she admits to herself that she is amazed by her sexual hunger. I think Ms.Terry was expecting a lot from her reader's that is to say she wanted us to believe her characters and feel their passion but it was weak. I was annoyed by the fact that Maya who is suppose to be inexperienced sexually, in trauma from her childhood in foster care, and has insolated herself in her work would allow Mark such easy access into her life, Mark's rather take charge kind of attitude in their relationship should have conjured up all kinds of reactions from Maya and I think the readers would have appreciated at least seeing one or two of those defenses indicative of her obvious emotional pain,at least then the two characters would have had something challenging to conquer, like trust,as they explored each other and their relationship. Mark was prehaps much more interesting since he wasn't the stereo-typical jaded cop. However, it would have been nice to have discovered why he wasn't and what made him the person who could easily see all the wonderful things about Maya that she couldn't see in herself. I would urge Ms. Terry to really develop her erotic love scenes, I enjoy good erotic writing but I know it is not easy to do, but all love sequences need to have a build up, and for sure if the sex is erotic, the descriptions and dialogue should match. Ms. Terry I think is a promising writer and I look forward to seeing her grow.
I can't even finished it!.......2006-12-30
Some might call it unfair to rate a book based on reading only half of it, but I consider it punishment enough that I even read half of it. This book is a total waste of time and money! The storyline could have some real potential if it were carefully worked out. The dialogue it choppy and doesn't have a maturity to it. The characters' individuality isn't developed before they're tossed into a romance which is soap-opera (and not the good ones) like. There are certain expectations that readers have when presented with a cop-murder mystery novel and this novel by no means even comes close! It's pretty painful just trying to read a page of this novel and it will probably be disgraded very shortly.
Somewhat Disappointed...but okay.......2006-08-14
At first Marks "strong attraction" was sweet but then everything happened sooooo fast between Mark and Maya; and there was nothing to anticipate anymore after page 9 between them u could predict every scene after that. Before I was less than half through with the book I was bored with their relationship. It was annoying how Mark treated her like a fragile doll too.
I gave it three stars only because it has a good message that its not about where you come from but where you are going. Oh yea and the steamy sex too.

Book Description
Published in Britain to great acclaim -- a startling, gut-wrenching memoir of war, personal dissolution, and rebirth -- based on the author's experiences in Bosnia.
When tragedy strikes Bill Carter's life he finds himself drawn to an unlikely place -- Bosnia, in the midst of its civil war. Searching for meaning in the heart of darkness, he manages to find lodging in an abandoned tower block and sets out getting supplies to the starved, besieged citizens of Sarajevo. It is there that Carter emerges from his stupor. Inspired by a community of people working to bring relief to the city, he daringly enlists the help of music group U2 and its lead singer, Bono, who set up satellite links on the band's Zooropa tour that allowed ordinary citizens of Sarajevo to speak unedited and live on 90-foot television screens to thousands of concertgoers worldwide.
Just as Michael Herr's Vietnam memoir Dispatches captured the horror of war for the '60s generation, Bill Carter's Fools Rush In will be the seminal book for this generation on the visceral and transformative impact of war in our time.

A layered, character-driven memoir that reads like a novel. For everyone who wants to understand a little more about war -- and right now, shouldn't that be all of us?
War and Love - a really powerful story.......2006-06-14
I loved this book. It was raw and powerful and really moved me. This book touches on a couple of key themes - war and love. I found it a really powerful commentary on the politics of war, without being a political polemic. Equally, anyone who has experienced the death of someone young and close to them will find a kindred spirit which may make the experience less lonely. The only time Carter lost me was when he describes his experiences with U2. He comes across as bit of a victim, a bit too self pitying. This is a problem only because it is at odds with the rest of the book which has such a tone of endurance and spirit.
Truely a story of love and war.......2005-08-27
This emotionaly moving story encompasses all facets of human emotion and should truely be read by everyone.
Intimate and Horrifying.......2005-06-29
FOOLS RUSH IN by Bill Carter is a memoir of the siege of Sarajevo by an American who voluntarily went there to help the Bosnians victimized by the Serbian aggressors.
Carter had recently lost a girlfriend suddenly in a car accident, and he was looking for something to do to get away from his grief. He went to the Balkans, where he had a friend working for an aid organization in Split, Croatia. He couldn't get an "official" job in Bosnia, during the war, so he joined The Serious Road Trip, a group of internationals, who drove brightly painted trucks and cars and delivered food aid to beseiged people while juggling and clowning for the kids. Carter's main friend in the narrative is Graeme, who utters some funny Brit black humor in the course of the surreal events of the memoir. ("Easy there, Spam," will forever be part of my ideolect.)
Carter essentially moves to Sarajevo, and stays in an office tower near the front lines, the Unis Towers. He tells of the daily hardships of living with no sure supply of water, food, gas, electric along with having to move through the city ever-aware of snipers. The Serious Road Trip delivered food to different groups around the city, mostly based on interpersonal relationships the members of TSRT developed. For example, Carter meets two sisters who lead him on a run across Sniper Alley (they accused him of being a "war tourist") to their apartment, which they couldn't leave once the siege began until their father dug a tunnel out of the building, as the main exit faced the Serb-occupied hills. In the family's apartment, Carter feels guilt over enjoying the hospitality they offer him. He can see from their faces and bodyies that they are slowly starving, but they are all amazed when they find a bullet in the flour he was carrying in the box of groceries he was taking to them as he ran across Sniper Alley. He watches a video with the family of a birthday party, and in the video, as they celebrate, a bullet comes through the window and lodges in the wall. After the instant of the shot, the family recovers and continues the celebration. After showing the video, the mother tells Carter, "Our first bullet."
It is unreal and inhumane moments like this that are best illustrated in Carter's narrative. Much of the last half of the book deals with Carter's idea to get U2 to publicize the problems in Sarajevo because of the siege. (The UN brought in food for those trapped in the city, but the Serbs wouldn't allow it to be delivered unless they got 40 percent of it themselves. The UN troops also kept Sarajevans in the city, not allowing them to connect with the free Bosnian territory just beyond the UN controlled airport.) The U2 aspect was interesting, and illustrated how the world came to be outraged about what was happening to Bosnians, but it was less interesting than the small moments so well depicted by Carter's intimacy with the lives of Sarajevans but colored by his "foreigner's" view, as an American. His stranger's view of the situation allows him to voice his moral outrage, but his intimate experience with the city's horrors, and his own hardships because of it, allow him that outrage, legitimize it.
The thing I didn't like about the book is an aspect of Carter's personality that I term (borrowing from organizational communication) "low elimination breakpoint." Carter seems to be better than everything, or at least everything around him has intolerable flaws. Aid organizations are too bureaucratic, so he won't work with them. Even though he works in film and makes a documentary of the hardships in Sarajevo during the siege, working in film is also not good enough for him. Etc. I found some of the writing overwrought (he was the most in love of any person ever in love, for example). He seems to morally eschew attention for his work in Bosnia, but then is offended when he doesn't get what he thinks is his fair share.
One of the most moving and upsetting moments in the narrative is when TSRT is trying to get out of Bosnia to collect supplies and stays with a Muslim family in a town after the Croats have turned on their Muslim allies against the Serbs. Carter and his colleagues know the town they're in is about to be ethnically cleansed, and the family they're staying with will be victims of that cleansing. There is a teen-age boy in the family who tells them it isn't their war, and Carter thinks, whose war is it?" A boy's war? People who didn't cause it, but are about to be killed en masse because of their Turkish sounding names? TSRT can leave the town, but the people with whom they've stayed cannot. Again, it's the intimacy and humanity of the encounter that make the impression. Carter later hears that the people of the town who could flee tied handicapped and sick people to their beds and fled the genocidal murderers by running into the woods. That's all he knows of the family who sheltered him...
I bought this book at an English-language bookstore in Sarajevo, so it was richer to read about such places as Sniper Alley, the Holiday Inn, the Old Town, the tunnel the Bosnian forces used to get supplies and soldiers into and out of Sarajevo after having seen them myself. It's a good book and serves as an effective companion to the historical and political reportage that exists on the war. I recommend it.
Superb, heartfelt story!.......2005-06-27
This is definitely one of the best books I have read this year. Once I started it I could not put it down. Bill Carter gives an excellent account of his personal journey that takes him into war-torn B-H, and tells a well-rounded story that obviously comes from the heart. No political grandstanding-- you can identify with the point of view of this normal, adventurous guy who has the courage (and initial naivety) to inject himself into a surreal world where people are trying to continue living the best they can in the midst of destruction and death. Fascinating account of his interaction with U2, and the resulting broadcasts on the world's stage of real human beings trapped inside the insanity of war. And mixed in is his own struggle with personal loss that leaves him empty but leads him into a situation that ultimately puts everything in perspective. He magnificently weaves all these elements together for an overall balanced, engaging narrative. After reading, I also watched Carter's Miss Sarajevo documentary which superbly complements the book.

Through it all........2005-10-28
Kudos to Shellie R. Warren on writing such a powerful message filled book. The author of this book could be anyone of us because in some form or fashion we all have been a victim of poor decision making that led to unhealthy relationships etc.
"Inside of Me" is just another example of not being able to have a testimony without the test. It's a must read for all ages and genders.
Awesome.......2005-10-27
This is an awesome book for all to read. The experiences that Shellie shares are as real as it gets. It should be shared with young men and women to let them know that they will have choices to make and their decisions will have an impact on thier lives as well as others around them. I am proud of Shellie for being brave enough to share with us her experiences so that hopefully we can avoid some of the things that she endured. To all thinking about purchasing the book----Just Do It--It is priceless!! God Bless you Shellie and continue to share your awesome gift !!
AMAZING..........2005-08-11
Its not by accident that after about 35 reviews, nearly all have given this book 5 stars. What is there to say that hasn't already been said? I have seen alot of comments that say "this is a must read for women"... just to clarify, this is a book "for everyone- men and women." I am a 24 year old guy and read this book in 2 days. God has certainly blessed Shellie with tremendous writing ability. You will not be dissapointed with this book...
WOW!!! Praise God For Transparency !!!.......2005-07-30
Amidst all of the calamity, lust, sex, & promiscuity that is in the world, this is a book that can bring about change. Thank you Shellie for keepin' it real. It took strength that truly had to come from God to tell your story.
Having had some of the same experiences of the author Shellie Warren, all I could say is WOW and that I must MOVE in sharing this word. Her book has prompted me to start planning on speaking with young adults and late teens at my place of worship and at the local H.S.'s to get the word out. We must equip our young people with information to make better choices in life. That's the very reason that God allowed her to write this book!
I am firm, when I say "This Book Will Bring About Change !!!"
very insightful.......2005-07-10
I bought this book for my girlfriend and I found myself reading it and was very involved into the story. I think this is a book for everyone. I would recamend this book to everyone.

Book Description
Today, Lin Jensen is a Zen master. But before that, he had to get through a difficult childhood and a difficult life. Bad Dog! is Jensen's sometimes quirky, sometimes poignant telling of the long path he took to inner peace. In over 40 short, interlocking pieces, Jensen uncovers his personal history, starting with his early life on a struggling farm in the dusty, quiet Midwest. Jensen eventually reaches college where he encounters a new world and a new passion, poetry, before entering into a marriage that is destined to fail. The one constant throughout Jensen's life is the search for meaning, a search that leads him to finally awaken to his calling in Zen. Always engaging, Jensen's quiet stories subtly reflect on the currents of love, beauty, and redemption that run through all lives. His simple prose rings with insight at just the right moments, making Bad Dog! a book that will appeal to anyone who's ever looked for life's little bright spots.
Customer Reviews:
One of the most beautiful books I've read.......2006-07-30
I'm a fan of really good writing as well as Buddhism. I read this book several months ago and always meant to write a review about it. So today I finally got around to it and browsed the reviews written before me to see that all the superlatives had been already taken.
Gut-wrenching, beautiful,powerful.
This book touched me as very few have. It is a must-read regardless of its subject matter because of the quality of the writing alone. I could feel this kid's life. His loneliness, alienation and neediness.
Like many great books it can be read on different levels. As a personal memoir of growing up in a particular time and place with a particular type of upbringing. As a lay Buddhist book; essentially a primer of how to step away from a world of samsara and build for yourself, step by step, act by act, a life of peace, love and compassion.
What a journey he's had. How amazing that he shared it with us.
It's an elegant, lyrical, deceptively "deep" book which really deserves a much wider audience.(Read it and imagine that it's Number One on the N.Y. Times bestseller list and see if you feel just a little more hopeful).
Brilliant........2006-06-09
Stark, and beautiful.
Many people, like the author's father, assert that the best response to tough times is to be cold and tough in our actions. But throughout his lifetime, in the shadow of the Great Depression and his cruel father, the author stayed true to his own inner desire for compassion.
And he has lived to tell us about it.
Redemption redux.......2006-01-15
The first story "Bad Dog" evokes the recurring theme of the entire collection: Redemption in a world of sorrow. It spans the author's life through more than fifty years in a mere six pages. An essence of humilty is evident as you try and understand the hardness of his father's will. The adage of he did the best he knew how plays a familiar tune to most of us raised by depression era parents. The resentment melts away with Jensen's tender acts of mercy towards his father nearing the end of his life. A tender act few if any of us would be able to muster up...
It's a recommended read for everyone hoping to understand how to see into the darkness and not be afraid.
Life's lessons are all around us.......2005-09-21
Lin Jenson has the grace to reflect on profound moments in his life in a non-judgemental way, regardless of the circumstances. It is refreshing to read the work of a person that has the gift of self reflection and can communicate the experience as well as this Zen teacher has been able to do. One can only hope to be able to learn as much from their own life's experiences.

A Swashbuckling Romance!.......2007-05-12
A swashbuckling romance complete with a born again pirate! Go figure. But Mary Lu Tyndall has managed to pull it off.
As far as historical romance novels go, because secular novels had become entirely too torrid for me to tolerate, I stopped reading them years ago. So it was quite a treat to read "The Redemption." The book was great entertainment, and I can't do anything but recommend it to the historical romance fan.
Tahlula Bell (my poodle) and I enjoyed every minute we were curled up together cruising the Caribbean with Captain Merrick and Charlisse. Tahlula Bell doesn't have a thumb, but if she did, it would definitely be up. Woman Submit! Christians & Domestic Violence
Gotta love pirates..........2007-04-27
I was really looking forward to this because of the numerous high ratings and the fact that it was a pirate book (gotta love pirates!). I have to admit I was a little bit disappointed in the character development (I didn't feel like I cared enough about them, but that could have just been me), but the plot was awesome. This book is full of tension and excitement, worth the read. Not gonna be on my keeper shelf but I did enjoy it. :-)"
Excellent Book.......2007-04-18
I couldn't put this book down! It was very well written and full of adventure. The best part is that the pirate had become a Christian! I can't wait for the next one.
Absolutely Terrific Read!.......2006-12-15
If you're looking for a "can't put it downer" kind of book to read, this is it! This book is full of action, adventure, historical truths, and romance. Good, clean romance. And it has the wonderful revalation of God's love, grace, mercy, and protection. I read it in a day and a half and am pre-ordering the next one. This is the first ever pirate book I've found in the Christian sect, and Marylu Tyndall did a fabulous job at writing it! I'm looking forward to more to come. I highly recommend this book, believer, or not, it'll grab you!
Pirates, Aye!.......2006-10-26
Swashbuckling pirates, battles at sea, a lady in distress, and a missing father all combine in The Redemption by M. L. Tyndall for an enjoyable read.
The first surprise came when I realized that the pirate captain, Edmund Merrick, had already become a Christian. How could this be? How could he continue his "occupation" as a pirate and profess to be a Christian? The questions drove me to read as quickly as I could. Finally it dawned on me. Edmund was a British subject in 1665 working at the Queen's order. He was a "legal" pirate. He and his pirate crew hunt down Spanish ships for the Queen. The British were at odds with the Spanish during this time period.
The problem with not with Ms. Tyndall's writing; it was with my lack of quick knowledge of the history of the time period.
I must say that in spite of my confusion I had to keep reading. Edmund Merrick's character enticed me to keep going to see how he would deal with the conflicts he experienced between the requirements of his job and his need to follow a more Christian path. Would he change or revert to his pre-Christian ways?
In Lady Charlisse Bristol, M. L. Tyndall created a strong heroine. Her determination to live after the shipwreck that stranded her alone on a deserted island and to find her missing father made me want to cheer her on. As Charlisse struggles to get through all the trials, I wondered how much more could she endure?
I've watched a lot of movies about pirates and enjoyed them, but I've not done a lot of reading from this time period. The weaving of the threads of historical facts is so well done in this novel that the unfamiliar nature of them became a rich background instead of a jarring intrusion.
The romance M. L. Tyndall creates in The Redemption drew me into the story as well. Would Edmund and Charlisse find a way to cross the ocean of doubt and fear between them in order to be able to acknowledge their attraction for one another?
Women readers will find this story captivating, yet it is written with a strong enough hero to attract male readers as well.

About Str8 Bolt.......2007-04-20
I really enjoyed the book and stayed up till 4:30 A.M. this morning (February 6th) to finish it! I truly love time travel stories and this book was an eye-opener! The consistency of the characters and the time references were done very well and the writing was superb!! The only thing that was wrong was all the grammatical errors (misspelled words)and language consistency, for example:"Buenas nochas" instead of "Buenas noches" and other misspelled words in Spanish throughout the book. It looked a bit like it was rushed and not proof-read! Otherwise, I immensely enjoyed the book and can't wait till the sequels come out!!!
STR8 BOLT.......2006-11-18
This is one book that is hard to put down. I have lived in Southern California all my life and could invision most of the locations mentioned in this book. The way the author describes the characters is marvelous. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has wanted to go back in time and change the way something happened or didn't happen to them. Can't wait to see the movie that will be made from this book.

Miss Cozy Brown, proprietor of a bookstore that specializes in rare and hard-to-find African American titles, goes to sleep one night knowing that something magical is about to happen. She finds herself drawn again to the yellowed manuscript that her grandmother bequeathed to her, Children of Grace, a slave narrative by a woman healer who died long before abolition. Despite its unsparing accounts of cruelty and abuse, hope shimmers from its pages, and the book can only be described as a love story with prophetic overtones, much like Redemption Song. It closes with the promise that slavery will end--the author of the manuscript, Iona, reads the future in the stars--but that true freedom will only come later. The next morning, as Miss Cozy suspected, two strangers are waiting for Black Images to open. They both need a special book, something life-transforming, and their hands fall at the same time on Children of Grace. Miss Cozy glances up as the couple approaches the counter. She "watched these two, as she'd watched so many others. She knew that they had no idea how their lives were going to be affected. Other folks had come to her shop thinking that they had been led to the bookstore because of their own intuition. But she knew better. This was her purpose, her calling: to help others unfold the chapters of their lives by reading between someone else's lines."
Some of what happens to Fina and Ross when Miss Cozy takes them under her wing will not surprise readers. But as they leaf through Children of Grace together, drawing strength from the story, they uncover Iona's "Recipe of Life," with its powerful and remarkably personal message. In her fictional debut, Bertice Berry has written a modern-day fairy tale and a hymn of praise to literature's redemptive power. --Regina Marler
Book Description
In her fiction debut, comedian and inspirational speaker Bertice Berry has written a spiritual love story that will seep into your bones and remain with you long after the last page has been turned.
Redemption Song is a marvelous story about love, the importance of understanding one's history, and the power of books and how they can influence your life.
Josephine "Fina" Chambers and Ross Buchanan meet in Black Images, a small African American bookshop, as they both reach for a rare copy of a slave woman's "memory book." Each refuses to let go of the book until the wise and spirited owner, Miss Cozy, negotiates a deal. Over the next several days, they will read the slave woman's book together in the comfort of the bookstore. In the process, Ross and Fina will realize that the path to their shared future may be linked to something that happened more than a century ago...
Over the next several days, they read the slave woman's book aloud in what becomes the magical cocoon of the bookstore. In the process, they learn about African-American history, the power of the human spirit, and discover four essential elements for the survival of society. Ross and Fina also come to realize that the path to their hearts may be linked to an event that happened more than a century ago.
REDEMPTION SONG is a marvelous story about love, the importance of understanding one's history, and, most of all, about books and how they can influence a person's life. It is also a love song to booksellers everywhere: The Miss Cosy character is modeled after a real African-American bookstore owner. -->

Redemption Song .......2007-03-30
Fina had a thing for trying on her boyfriend's shirts, she could make them look like her own even if it was a little bit big or small. Whenever one of her boyfriends would see her in their shirt they would have one of two reactions; they would either demand that she take their shirt off and storm out, or they would try to take advantage of her fit body. Fina always figured that she would find a shirt that fit just right she would have found the one she would spend the rest of her life. Ross was an established anthropologist, he had been very successful in his lifetime but through a series of events he was lead to take up a new project which concerned a book titled Children of Grace. The book was about two slave lovers. The girl, Iona, was raped by their owner's son and then mothered his child. Her father went crazy and killed their owner after realizing that not only had he his son raped his daughter, he had expected her to love him too. Joe, Iona's lover, was enraged at this fact but did nothing so he could stay with the one he was in love with, Iona. Fina and Ross had both been searching for the book and both had decided to look at the same store on the same day at the same time when they met. After being acquainted with each other, Ross, Fina, and Ms. Cozy went on a mission to figure out the mystery that was buried in the story. This book was great and is recommended to all readers who love inspirational novels.
The story was slightly controversial, but not in the least bit confusing. Ms. Cozy, the owner of the store, saw Ross and Fina come to the counter wanting another copy of the Children of Grace so each could have it, after having a small argument about who the book should go to since they both grabbed it "at the same time". She figured they were together, so, she also figured that they had to have a reason for wanting two different copies. They explained that they were not together and that they had each been looking for the book for sometime. When she explained that the book was not for sale, and that there was only one copy the two were very disappointed. She then invited them to a part of the store that customers were not allowed, it was a small room with plants and chairs to sit and read on.
The story showed emotion and pain well. When Ms. Cozy read the part of the story were Joe could not protect Iona after she had been raped but yet she was still his wife, he cried, long hard sobs that seemed as though they would never stop. Fina who already felt connected to Ross didn't know what to do, Ms. Cozy led her out of the room explaining that it was time to eat something, later on Ross joined them in the kitchen.
Redemption Song linked events in the story very well. At the end when Ross, Fina, and Ms. Cozy figured out the mystery of the Children of Grace, the author also wound in a way to explain how everything was connected by putting it in the dialogue itself. A combination of the three characters was used to explained that Fina was actually a direct descendant of Iona and Ross was related to her lover Joe. Fina and Ross became a couple by the end of the story and, along with Ms. Cozy, set out on a new mission, getting the book published with the whole story, including the lives of Fina and Ross in it.
Redemption song was an exceptionally good book with a great plot. The characters show emotions and events in the story are linked in a very organized manner without losing the tone or flow of the story. This book is again recommended to readers who love inspirational stories.

Redemption HOPE.......2007-02-10
This book is really an awesome read. It has you enchanted the moment you start.
Wonderful!!.......2005-10-11
I started on Friday, by Sunday afternoon I was done. Dr. Berry is not only a great speaker, she pulls you into her work and makes you a part of the story. Loved it, loved it!
A Fruitful Moral.......2005-01-21
An extremely touching and compelling novel. I especially loved the way the author described things; I could almost taste the fruit of her effort.
It truly does contain the Recipe of Life; I loved the moral.
Spiritual Love...........2004-03-19
I have no idea what to write about a book that gives you everything you need in a little over 100 pages. I heard a saying a long time ago; A book is a gift that you can open over and over again. This is one of the best gifts I have ever received. Thank you Ms. Berry.
Redemption Song was also a history lesson never to be forgotton. In order to progress forward, we have to know our history. Which is exactly what Ross and Fina did after their chance meeting at Black Images Bookstore or was it by chance.
I loved this book - 192 pages filled with MORE, filled with HOPE filled with a great storyline. This book seeps in your soul and remind you of the power of books.
