Book Description
The bestselling author of The Botany of Desire explores the ecology of eating to unveil why we consume what we consume in the twenty-first century
"What should we have for dinner?" To one degree or another this simple question assails any creature faced with a wide choice of things to eat. Anthropologists call it the omnivore's dilemma. Choosing from among the countless potential foods nature offers, humans have had to learn what is safe, and what isn't-which mushrooms should be avoided, for example, and which berries we can enjoy. Today, as America confronts what can only be described as a national eating disorder, the omnivore's dilemma has returned with an atavistic vengeance. The cornucopia of the modern American supermarket and fast-food outlet has thrown us back on a bewildering landscape where we once again have to worry about which of those tasty-looking morsels might kill us. At the same time we're realizing that our food choices also have profound implications for the health of our environment. The Omnivore's Dilemma is bestselling author Michael Pollan's brilliant and eye-opening exploration of these little-known but vitally important dimensions of eating in America.
Pollan has divided The Omnivore's Dilemma into three parts, one for each of the food chains that sustain us: industrialized food, alternative or "organic" food, and food people obtain by dint of their own hunting, gathering, or gardening. Pollan follows each food chain literally from the ground up to the table, emphasizing our dynamic coevolutionary relationship with the species we depend on. He concludes each section by sitting down to a meal--at McDonald's, at home with his family sharing a dinner from Whole Foods, and in a revolutionary "beyond organic" farm in Virginia. For each meal he traces the provenance of everything consumed, revealing the hidden components we unwittingly ingest and explaining how our taste for particular foods reflects our environmental and biological inheritance.
We are indeed what we eat-and what we eat remakes the world. A society of voracious and increasingly confused omnivores, we are just beginning to recognize the profound consequences of the simplest everyday food choices, both for ourselves and for the natural world. The Omnivore's Dilemma is a long-overdue book and one that will become known for bringing a completely fresh perspective to a question as ordinary and yet momentous as What shall we have for dinner?
Customer Reviews:
A master-class on asking questions, conducting research, and writing..........2007-06-25
There is a plethora of detailed reviews regarding the merits of this outstanding, extraordinary book, so there is no need to repeat what has been said. Let me, then, add just a brief note on the subject that may be somewhat off the beaten track of most other reviews, a remark that comes from my "teaching" perspective.
The book is a fine example of how to approach a wide topic, narrow it down, ask intelligent questions, plan and conduct field research, complement it with an in-depth summary of published materials, and wind up with a text that is not only brilliant in its informative content, but also very readable - no mean feat. Over the last couple of years, the only other non-fiction book I enjoyed that much, was Jared Diamond's Pulitzer-winning "Guns, Germs, and Steel..."
Most Important Book of 2007.......2007-06-22
This is the best book in the entire world - take my word for it - just buy it and read away.
The Way To Think About Anything.......2007-06-21
I'm posting this to strongly encourage all journalists (I'm a former journalist; 20 years in the business) and all writers to evaluate this book because of how well Micahel Pollan analyzes a topic and then writes about it. The writing is sharp, witty, and inspiring. But the writing begins with the thinking process, the way in which he breaks down something that's fairly obvious in our lives (say, the idea of the big grocery store) and looks at the components underneath. Pollan moves seamlessly from gritty first-person journalism and scientific details to breezy (easy to read) essay writing that reveals how he builds his arguments. Quite simply, this is one of the best pieces of non-fiction I've ever...devoured. I read "Fast Food Nation" but this takes some of those basic facts and branches off and puts forward a much more complex evaluation of all that lies behind the eating problems in this country today. In particular, I found Pollan's point that we have no single national food culture to be particularly compelling. What a book.
really think about food.......2007-06-21
Pollan leads you down the path of food knowledge making you feel like he's sitting at the table with you. I have been in the food industry all my life, reading this book reminded me why. Most of his topics roll out like a great joke being told. Pollan's journey to decipher what is important about how we get and what we eat never loses momentum. He has an ability to cover large subjects quickly and succinctly. There is definite passion in his investigations and each meal he dissects offers new perceptions about how the food we eat gets to our table. I thought the book was a fun read. There is so much world history intertwined with telling of Pollan's story. I would reccommend this book to anyone who is a lover of nature, food and animals. Pollan explored every subject from both sides and never preached about one or the other, the entire time leaving me to decide what to think. By the end of the book I was telling everyone around me random facts about CAFOs (confined animal feeding operation) and what's happening to the soil in Iowa. This book helped me make a conscious choice about my school of thought when it comes to, what's for dinner?, what will your choice be?
What should we have for dinner?.......2007-06-18
That's a frequent question that we all have to answer, isn't it? It also sums up the nature of the "omnivore's dilemma" quite nicely....as creatures that can eat virtually anything, the dilemma can be defined as "what SHOULD we eat"?
Author Michael Pollan sets out to find the answer to this question by tracing 4 meals back to their sources. Pollan dissects a fast food meal, a store-bought organic entree, a "beyond organic" meal produced entirely at a polyculture farm, and a meal that he hunts and gathers (almost) entirely by himself. Along the way, he asks the reader to join him in his quest for a more thorough knowledge of the food that we eat and a better understanding of how the decisions that we make as food consumers help to shape our cultural and physical landscape.
This is an intensely interesting book, and an important addition to the bookshelf for anyone interested in becoming more "food-aware". Pollan's journey is always engaging, sometimes spiritual ("We are what we eat" takes on a new dimension when one stops to look at it with this much depth), and occasionally frightening. He is always respectful of his cast of characters, and he is willing to challenge his own preconceptions and ideas as he gathers knowledge and experience.
Pollan's visit to the Iowa cornfields is an eye-opener. Readers will be shocked to know how much of our food economy depends on corn and corn by-products. His foray to Whole Foods is likewise enlightening, as the lines between "industrial" food and "organic industrial" begin to blur before our very eyes. His visit to Polyface Farms in Virginia is uplifting, and you can tell that Pollan was duly impressed by what he took in while visiting there. His final chapters on hunting and gathering are quite entertaining and educational, as he takes the reader on twin wild boar and wild mushroom hunts.
This is a book that will stick with you long after you finish it. I've found myself recommending it often, lending it out a couple of times, and referring to it frequently. It's a tremendous exercise in thinking about food, and as such, it's tremendous food for thought.
Highly recommended for anyone who eats.

Book Description
Parents will do almost anything to get their kids to eat healthier, but unfortunately, they've found that begging, pleading, threatening, and bribing don't work. With their patience wearing thin, parents will "give in" for the sake of family peace, and reach for "kiddie" favorites--often nutritionally inferior choices such as fried fish sticks, mac n' cheese, Pop-sicles, and cookies.
Missy Chase Lapine, former publisher of Eating Well magazine, faced the same challenges with her two young daughters, and she sought a solution. Now in The Sneaky Chef, Lapine presents over 75 recipes that ingeniously disguise the most important superfoods inside kids' favorite meals. With the addition of a few simple make-ahead purees or clever replacements, (some may surprise you!) parents can pack more fiber, vitamins, and antioxidants in their kids' foods. Examples of "Sneaky" recipes include:
-No Harm Chicken Parm
-Power Pizza
-Incognito Burritos
-Guerilla Grilled Cheese
-Brainy Brownies
-Health-by-Chocolate Cookies
-Quick fixes for Jell-O(R)
It's a book chock-full of strategies that will help any parent incorporate better health for the whole family.
Customer Reviews:
Thank God for Missy Lapine.......2007-06-28
It has been 48 hours since I bought "the SNEAKY chef" and in that time I have made three of the recipes. ALL of which my kids and husband ate without complaint. Thank God for Missy Chase Lapine. These recipes imcluded yams, carrots, white beans, oats, spinach, blueberries, and whole wheat. I can't stop laughing when I think of how easily my kids indulged in the Brainy Brownies, Chicken Tenders, and Bagel Pizzas. This book should be a staple in the kitchen of EVERY parent. Thank you Ms. Lapine; you have helped me regain my sanity.
Excellent resource, but needs a few small changes.......2007-06-28
I was a bit sceptical when I read about this book, but I am a total convert to 'The Sneaky Chef'. My fussy two-year old has been eating his veggies without even being aware of it, and my whole family has been impressed with the healthy, delicious recipes in the book. The 'No Harm Chicken Parm' is outstanding, as are the 'Grab and Go Granola Bars.' I have been adding the Orange Puree to spaghetti sauce, burgers, etc., with great results.
I have two small criticisms of this otherwise excellent cookbook. One, some of the recipes are not specific enough...i.e. the Purple Puree calls for 3 cups raw spinach or two cups frozen chopped spinach. I made it with the frozen spinach, and I suspect 2 cups frozen is a lot more spinach than three cups raw, as my puree was more black than purple, and the taste of spinach was still apparent when I made the Healthful Chocolate Cookies (which were, unfortunately, not tasty). Blueberries are expensive, so I was not pleased at this blunder. Also, I made the granola bars this morning, and, while the flavour was delicious, the recipe calls for cooking the bars for 15-18 minutes, but it doesn't say 'until browned on top' or 'until firm' and I had to guess at the texture and firmness of the bars. I actually cooked them for about 35 minutes, as they were far too crumbly when I cooked them for the recommended time.
Second, there is no nutritional information on the recipes in the book, and I would have expected to see calories, amount of fibre, sodium content, etc., in a book about 'healthy' foods. I am careful about how many calories I feed the family, and was somewhat disappointed that this information was not included.
However, the positives far outweigh the negatives, and I am really excited to keep cooking from this book, as so far, it's been a big hit.
Sneaky chef.......2007-06-27
So far everything I have made my son loves! My husband is even eating it! I have tried the brownies, chocolate chip cookies and added the white puree to tomato sauce. For kids who don't eat veggies this is a great idea!
Awesome! Love it!.......2007-06-23
The Sneaky Chef's ideas are so simple, but so effective! Why didn't anyone think of this method for adding veggies and fruit into reluctant eaters' diets sooner??? The book is full of easy, quick, practical ways to boost the nutritional value of foods kids already love. At last, a way to get those veggies in!
Wonderful!!.......2007-06-21
I have two girls. One will try vegetables and the other will not. I purchased this book to aid me getting vegetables and healthy foods as part of my children's diet. I was hesitant to do this, but figured it could not hurt. To my surprise my girls are eating vegetables and other healthy things with out even knowing it! Is it sneaky, of course, but that is the genius of this book!
We have only one recipe that none of us cared for and that was the meatloaf. We found it just to dry and a bit bland. However, everything else is great. In fact tonight we are having the fish sticks and the french fries! YUMMY!!
I highly recommend this book if you have picky eaters like I do!

Book Description
The DietMinder is a deluxe food diary with plenty of room to record quantities and food counts (calories, fat, carbs, protein, etc.) of breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks. A special area for daily totals makes it easy to see at a glance how you are doing. Each "day" consists of two pages with space for exercise details, too. There are other helpful sections in the book such as the Favorite Foods listing which provides food counts on over 100 common foods and has space to add your own favorite food information. The Goals section of the DietMinder is also important. Here you can list your starting statistics, state your goals, and even paste a "before" picture. This is a great way to stay motivated! The DietMinder can be used with virtually any food or fitness program. It has been proven that keeping a food journal helps people focus and stay more committed to improving their eating habits. It really works!

Great Journal.......2007-06-27
Wonderful Journal! I track my Weight Watchers Points along with my fat and carbohydrates intake everyday with this journal. I also track my workouts. There is plenty of room for personal add-ins. It has stood up to numerous rides in my purse, diaper bag, and gym bag. I can take it with me anywhere I go. If you aren't serious about tracking details of your diet everyday then it isn't for you.
I LOVE THIS JOURNAL!!!.......2007-06-27
I love this Journal!! I didn't get it to go on a diet. I got it so I could keep track of what I was eating. So I could safely breastfeed my son. In the beginning of the journal it tells you how to fill it out it's so easy! This journal also has pages to write down all your goals... including B/P, cholesterol even your goals for measurements. When I finished my first page I couldn't believe that I ate 4,000 calories in one day! And 97 grams of fat!!! My nutritionist told me everything that I should be eating, so I wrote those numbers on the first page for daily food goals. I now have what I eat under control and if my son gets gas I know where to turn. And very happily now that I have what I eat written down in front of me I have lost 10 lbs in one month and my son gained 2 lbs!! Once all my pages are full I will definately purchase another one.
One more thing before I go. I suffered from IBS. My doc told me to write a food log. So I brought him this journal. He couldn't believe how well informed he was about what I was eating. He found the problem immediatley. I no longer suffer from IBS.
If you have the courage to write down everything you eat, right down to the icing you licked off your finger while decorating cupcakes, then I highly recommend this journal. You will be surprised at the numbers.
I am now using the exercise parts of this book too. At the end of the day if I see that I forgot to exercise I write down in the notes that I need to exercise tomorrow so I don't forget.
Did I mention I love this journal!!
Keep track to succeed!.......2007-05-11
April 14, 2007
I got this handy, spiral bound book for my wife awhile back who is trying to lose a few pounds. She's been struggling to lose those last few pounds and with the help of this book, writing things down made her much more aware of exactly what she was eating- and guess what? It did the trick! Also recommend The Sixty-Second Motivator if you have trouble sticking to a diet or exercise program.
FITNESS JOURNAL REVIEW.......2007-05-08
RECEIVED AS EXPECTED AN ONTIME. GOOD DEAL. WOULD ORDER AGAIN AND DEFINITELY GOOD FOR SOMEONE WHO WANTS TO KEEP TRACK OF THIER FOOD INTAKE, EXERCISE, AND SO MUCH MORE.
Easy To Use.......2007-04-23
This journal is really user friendly. I would have given it 5 stars had it been designed with more space to keep track of your inches in weight loss and if the menu in the back were more complete.
Counting calories has never been easier and the little thing had enough space to write information and still fit in my purse. It's kept me organized enough to lose 40 lbs. and if you stop recording, it allows for you to just pick up where you left off without being confused.
I love it!

Book Description
Canine Cooking That Will Have Them Begging for More
Which do you think your dog would prefer: dry kibble, mushy canned food, or a nice, nutritionally sound helping of Tuna Togetherness? Not surprisingly, most dogs would be happier -- and healthier -- with the latter, considering the dangerous preservatives, questionable ingredients, and mysterious flavoring agents often used in commercial dog food.
That's why Rudy Edalati cooked up
Barker's Grub, a cookbook filled with wholesome, easy-to-prepare meals for your mutt or your pedigreed pooch -- and you'll find all the necessary ingredients in your fridge or at the local supermarket. She includes not only fun everyday meals, but healing meals for specific health problems, as well as special diets for different life stages, such as:
* Lo Mein Barking Style: the doggie alternative for Chinese takeout
* Beef Puppy Food: just the right mix for a growing dog
* Davie's Juicy Jiggly-Wiggly Anemia Diet: a blood-boosting dish of liver, rice, and spinach
Barker's Grub is informative (there's lots of canine nutritional information to chew on), inspiring, and just plain fun. The recipes are simple and quick -- after all, it's not just about health and longevity, it's about making the most of the time you and your dog spend together.

Not as good as others about the same subject.......2007-06-09
I guess I wanted my scientific and nutritional knowledge in a dog recipe book. This book is just too joky, with no real facts to back anything up.
Why should my dogs eat better than I do?.......2007-06-01
Seriously, this book gives quite a bit of nutritional information, but it seems that the recipes are overly done for the person who just wants to give his dogs an alternative to commercial food. I find the thought of cooking a rather complicated recipe each day (or week) to be daunting. Also, though my dogs are usually anything but finicky, they have turned up their noses at several of the offerings.
Barkers Grub book made my dog happy!.......2007-05-28
I was amazed to learn that commercial pet food products are a recent happening in this country which came about in the early 1900's. Prior to that, people fed their dogs what they ate. Due to the latest scare of pet food recall I tried the recommendations found in this book, starting my dog on the road to better nutrition. At first I was skeptical but now I can't say enough about this book. My dog's coat is shiny, her stools are small, she looks great. Best of all she eats EVERYTHING I put in front of her. With commercial dog foods, there was always something left in her bowl. She doesn't have any flatuence which is amazing. I thought she wouldn't eat the vegetables that were recommended, but VOILA!, she eats the vegetables, too. I did have some rough periods where during the transition from commercial pet food to natural food, there were bouts of diarrhea which the book said would happen. But I pressed on and now that the transition period is over, the diarrhea has stopped completely. Yes, the task at first is daunting trying to cook for your pet but anything new that we start out with does take some effort but it is well worth it. I cook for an entire month then store the food in plastic containers in the freezer. I take them out as needed. I wish I knew about this book when I got her as a puppy. I highly recommend this book to anyone who cares about their pets! Good health and long life to our pets!

My dogs sit patiently and drool when they see me getting out their meals eah day. I carry the book to the supermarket when I'm ready to prepare a new meal! Your dogs will love these recipes and you'll love making them. It is so easy! No more processed food for my guys!

Prescription for Nutritional Healing by nutritionist Phyllis A. Balch and James F. Balch, M.D., has long been considered one of the most trusted, comprehensive sources on the mind-boggling array of vitamins, minerals, herbs, and other dietary supplements now available. Working from the premise that a good diet promotes good health, this third edition of PNH still starts with the basics: consume fresh produce, grains, and lean meats; avoid foods that are processed or high in saturated fat; cook using glass, stainless steel, or iron--never aluminum; and drink filtered water. The authors also stand by their claim that the government-prescribed recommended daily allowances are ridiculously low, and that the book's optimal daily intake for nutrients should be followed instead.
So what's new in the third edition? Along with now-accepted remedies, like zinc and echinacea for the common cold, the Balches also explore many of the newer supplements to hit the market: SAMe (recommended for depression and joint pain), phosphatidyl serine (mental acuity), red yeast rice (cholesterol), and 5-HTP (weight loss, insomnia, depression). You'll also find an expanded chapter on alternative therapies that encompasses Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine, along with a hefty section on pain control that offers a grab bag of options such as acupuncture, biofeedback, guided imagery, chiropractic care, and massage.
Still, the bulk of the book remains the more than 250 health conditions--from everyday problems such as insect bites and bad breath to serious diseases including bulimia, cancer, and AIDS--and the nutritional protocols the Balches recommend for treatment. Since any number of supplements can be taken for the same condition, the Balches make sifting through the glut of information a little easier by separating their nutrient recommendations into four categories: essential, very important, important, and helpful. And they take a lot of the guesswork out of buying supplements by listing the brands they know and trust. Once again, the authors have squeezed in an impressive amount of information, including valuable sidebars on topics such as the dangers of aspartame; how to choose a calcium supplement; common heart problems and procedures; cancer risk factors, diagnosis, and treatments; and sports nutrition. This is not relaxing reading, but it's enormously useful. While the material can be dense, the authors still manage to present it in a straightforward manner that's understandable even for readers without a medical degree. --Norine Dworkin

Excellent Information!.......2007-06-27
I got this book for my sister -- at half the price stores are charging. She's amazed at the material contained (which doctors don't seem to know anything about). I have a copy of my own and am "into it" week after week. I've tried many of the suggestions given and they do work!
Great health problems reference book........2007-06-14
This book is a great book to get information on physical problems and what you can do for your ailments. There are lots of suggestions. You don't need to use them all. Everything doesn't work for everyone. People know their own body and have learned what works for them and what doesn't. To get information on what psychological problems you are having which is manifesting in the physical, get Louise L. Hay's book Heal Your Body. Attitude adjustments do a lot for your ability to handle life.
Great Reference .......2007-06-03
This is a great big book with a wealth of information about a great number (a few hundreds) of ailments, what causing them, and how to deal with them the natural way. With close to one thousand pages this is a complete resource of medical problems from A to Z. It is well researched, well referenced, and well written. It is also very simple to use, all ailments being ordered in alphabetical order. It is an excellent reference book, a health bible that should be readily available in each household. If you have a health problem I suggest checking what this book will tell you about it, before going to your doctor.
Other two books that I also recommend are The China Study and Can We Live 150 Years?
Excellent Information.......2007-05-31
This book has already got me feeling 100% better than anything my doctors have prescribed. I wanted a more 'natural' approach to getting healthy again, but my doctors would not work with me on that. I highly recommend this book along with a doctor who has no problems with a natural approach to healing. I haven't begun to scratch the surface and have already seen wonderful results. Go for it!
A Valuable Guide to Wellness.......2007-05-19
PNH has always been one of the most responsible reference guides to nutrition. Having had formal training in nutritional supplements and holistic remedies, and having seen the benefits of many nutritional supplements, I really appreciate this new expanded 4th Edition. While it is not a substitute for individualized medical care, it can be very informative. I highly recommend it to everyone.

Customer Reviews:
Easy to use with other cookbooks!.......2007-06-16
This guide is fantastic for various reasons, as many have mentioned. My main use of it has been in connection with other cookbooks not specifically meant for the South Beach Diet. I love Italian food and have cooked out of "The Silver Spoon" for a long time. When I went on the South Beach Diet, though, I was terrified - no carbs meant no pasta! When I got my hands on this little guide, though, I was saved. Now I can flip through my Italian cookbooks and, in conjunction with this little volume, I can choose meals that fit my diet. Also, if I need to, I can use this book to replace some ingredients which may not be diet-friendly. A fantastic book and a definite winner!
Handy Dandy.......2007-04-11
This Good Fats/Good Carbs Guide is just the thing to leave on your kitchen counter. I do, and refer to it constantly! The first part of this little book describes the South Beach Diet. Next, an outline of how to use the Food Guide. Then the food guide itself. Easy to read, and use. This guide is a must for anyone on the South Beach Diet. And, even if you aren't, but watching your fats and carbs, it's amazingly useful. I am having greater success, and much less stress adapting to this healthy lifestyle, thanks to this guide.
Good Fats/Good Carbs.......2007-03-19
Easy to read and understand. Opened my eyes to healthly eating and how to combined certain foods. I think twice now before putting a carb in my mouth and it helps me understand when and how to use the correct fats. You could really apply this information to any eating program.
Perfect to take down to the supermarket.......2007-03-19
A handy little pocket-sized guide book that's perfect to take down to the supermarket.
Take a long.......2007-03-18
This book is the perfect size for your purse or bag. I carry with me to verify my food selections. It includes sections for Phase 1,2 and 3. Very easy to understand.

Amazon.com's Best of 2001
On any given day, one out of four Americans opts for a quick and cheap meal at a fast-food restaurant, without giving either its speed or its thriftiness a second thought. Fast food is so ubiquitous that it now seems as American, and harmless, as apple pie. But the industry's drive for consolidation, homogenization, and speed has radically transformed America's diet, landscape, economy, and workforce, often in insidiously destructive ways. Eric Schlosser, an award-winning journalist, opens his ambitious and ultimately devastating exposé with an introduction to the iconoclasts and high school dropouts, such as Harlan Sanders and the McDonald brothers, who first applied the principles of a factory assembly line to a commercial kitchen. Quickly, however, he moves behind the counter with the overworked and underpaid teenage workers, onto the factory farms where the potatoes and beef are grown, and into the slaughterhouses run by giant meatpacking corporations. Schlosser wants you to know why those French fries taste so good (with a visit to the world's largest flavor company) and "what really lurks between those sesame-seed buns." Eater beware: forget your concerns about cholesterol, there is--literally--feces in your meat.
Schlosser's investigation reaches its frightening peak in the meatpacking plants as he reveals the almost complete lack of federal oversight of a seemingly lawless industry. His searing portrayal of the industry is disturbingly similar to Upton Sinclair's The Jungle, written in 1906: nightmare working conditions, union busting, and unsanitary practices that introduce E. coli and other pathogens into restaurants, public schools, and homes. Almost as disturbing is his description of how the industry "both feeds and feeds off the young," insinuating itself into all aspects of children's lives, even the pages of their school books, while leaving them prone to obesity and disease. Fortunately, Schlosser offers some eminently practical remedies. "Eating in the United States should no longer be a form of high-risk behavior," he writes. Where to begin? Ask yourself, is the true cost of having it "your way" really worth it? --Lesley Reed
Book Description
Fast food has hastened the malling of our landscape, widened the chasm between rich and poor, fueled an epidemic of obesity, and propelled American cultural imperialism abroad. That's a lengthy list of charges, but Eric Schlosser makes them stick with an artful mix of first-rate reportage, wry wit, and careful reasoning.
Schlosser's myth-shattering survey stretches from California's subdivisions, where the business was born, to the industrial corridor along the New Jersey Turnpike, where many of fast food's flavors are concocted. Along the way, he unearths a trove of fascinating, unsettling truths -- from the unholy alliance between fast food and Hollywood to the seismic changes the industry has wrought in food production, popular culture, and even real estate.
Customer Reviews:
Informative.......2007-06-09
The book is very informative about not only what is put in the food but also how the companies formed, and how it affects society. I worked in the fast food industry and have seen the high turn over rate that occurs. I also know that the companies isn't that sanitary. No hairnets, no gloves, I have witness someone sneeze on their hands and continue making the burger. The same oil used to fry the certain meat is the same used to fry the fries and as a vegan that didn't jive well.
The book although focusing on the fast food companies agenda and inner workings did bring to light that many of your food is not handled properly not just at the slaughterhouse but when it gets to the location as well. It is a book that everyone should read, because if everyone was aware of the events and demanded a change, it would happen.
"Please drive up to the window".......2007-06-06
The first time I read this book, I was working at a fast food joint. Every time I put one of those carnation pink waffles on the grill, all I could think about were the people of Greely, CO and what they went through to make sure that the people whining at the tills get their double cheeseburger. I never realized what went into those combo meals and even though I had a thankless job. After my expeirences in combination with reading this book, I will never work fast food again since everyone looses in the equasion.
Do you want fries with that?.......2007-06-06
This book makes a persuasive case for rethinking the way that America feeds itself. Mr Schlosser has gathered the evidence and is unrelenting in his condemnation of the behavior of the fast food giants. We are taken on a tour of the fast food industry and it isn't pretty!
The saddest part for me was to discover that Subway, which could reasonably be described as a healthier fast food option, is one of the worst companies in terms of the way it treats its franchisees.
We need healthy fast food which provides a fair living for the workers and decent nutrition for the consumer. Not too much to ask, you would have thought...
Fascinating and eye-opening look at fast food........2007-06-01
Wow. What can I say about this other than it really opened my eyes to what I was eating. I am not in the best shape of my life but recently rededicated myself to getting more exercise and eating right. In the past I have tried some fad diets and they would work for a time but they would eventually wear off. This time I decided to take a slightly different approach. I decided to really LEARN what I was eating. And this book told me a lot about what was in those burgers.
I was listening to a Diggnation episode and Kevin Rose mentioned this book so I took a look. From the first chapter to the last, I was totally fascinated with it. The book discusses the history of fast food restaurants, the meatpacking industry and other related areas. It gave me insight into the food production. Now I have more reason to NOT want to eat fast food.
As far as the writing goes, I really enjoyed it. The author spent a lot of time researching and including lots of interesting information. Some of it was disgusting (wait to you read what is really in that McD's hamburger) but it was interesting. The author's style was very easy to read and not dry or boring at any point.
If you want to really learn about what you are eating when you go to McDonalds, Burger King or other fast food joints, I HIGHLY recommend you read this book. As I said above, it is truly eye-opening.
GREAT!.......2007-05-19
An important subject written about ease and skill. Schlosser lets the facts speak for themselves, and the facts are horrifying. This book ranks up there with SILENT SPRING and THE JUNGLE. A must read!

Do you overeat because you don't feel satisfied or full? Volumetrics is based on "the science of satiety"--what researchers have learned about the food choices that make people feel full. The authors teach you how to eat low-calorie-dense, high-volume foods so that you feel like you've eaten plenty, even though you've eaten fewer calories. You'll lose weight without feeling hungry or deprived.
Here's an example of how volume affects eating. Raisins are dried grapes. But 100 calories of raisins fill only one-quarter cup, while 100 calories of fresh, whole grapes fill one and two-thirds cups. You'll feel satisfied after one and two-thirds cups of grapes, but if you're eating raisins, you're likely to keep filling your mouth. The point is not to stop eating raisins (or chocolate, cheese, or other high-calorie, low-volume foods), but to realize that you're likely to take in many more calories before your body tells you you're full. If you're trying to manage your weight, eating more low-density foods (lower-calorie foods that have a lot of volume) will make you feel full while you drop pounds.
Barbara Rolls, a respected and well-published food-nutrition researcher at Pennsylvania State University, and food writer Robert Barnett explain energy density and how to use this concept to lose weight. They include the scientific evidence about how low-density (low-calorie, high-volume) foods make you feel satisfied, the best (and worst) foods for a satisfying, lower-calorie diet, a menu plan, an exercise plan, and environmental influences on eating. You also learn which foods are easiest to overeat. This is not a fad diet--it is logical and scientifically based, yet easy to understand and put into action. --Joan Price
Book Description
Dieters everywhere have the same complaint: they're hungry all the time. Now this revolutionary book, based on sound scientific principles, can help you lose weight safely, effectively, and permanently without those gnawing pangs of hunger.
The Volumetrics Weight-Control Plan introduces the concept of "energy density" -- concentration of calories in each portion of food. Here you'll learn how to avoid high energy -- dense foods, and how such different nutritional factors as fat, fiber, protein, and water affect energy density and satiety. You'll discover which foods, eaten under which circumstances, allow you to consume fewer calories and still be satisfied. And you'll get to know the hidden calorie traps, seemingly innocuous foods that can sneak unwanted calories into your body. Finally, the authors offer 60 sensible, tasty and easy recipes, plus an integrated program of exercise and behavior management that can be sustained over a lifetime.
Customer Reviews:
Volumetrics Review.......2007-06-09
The concepts presented in this book are interesting and valid. The idea of beefing up any dish with free fruits or veggies to up the appetite control and lower the caloric intake makes sense. Also presented are helpful lists of food choices and amounts, helping the reader make wise decisions. However, the recipes included leave a lot to desire. Apparently, the title deals with volume, not taste!! If you want to customize your own food plan and incorporate some of these ideas, you'll be happy with reading this. It is a healthful program, and one that falls in line with heart-smart and diabetic diets.
The Volumetrics Weight-Control Plan.......2007-06-08
Diet was highly rated by Consumers report. Book was easy to understand and made horse sense. I am a volume eater and the other diets didn't fill me. This idea works and I am using it. Only shortcoming was too few recipes Looking for a second book with more.
The Volumetrics Weight-Control Plan
Good information, dispels a lot of myths.......2007-06-03
Everyone that's been sucked in by the low low-carb diet craze (or any other fad diet) should read this book. The author writes the scientific facts behind losing weight and keeping the weight off.
I've already lost 11lbs using the books principles. It's taken 6 weeks to lose that weight; the book doesn't promise quick results. However, I feel confident that the results are permanent, and I'll continue to lose 1 to 2 lbs a week until I get to my healthy weight.
The Volumetrics Weight-Control Plan.......2007-05-25
The menu items are great. Our whole family loves the meals.
This is a great find!.......2007-05-16
I saw this book on the news station one morning and decided to purchase it because it was considered one of the top books for consistent weight loss. This book has a lot of great information, and I was hooked even after the first couple of pages. This book does not tell you to avoid the good foods that we all like, with respect to fried foods, chocolate, and desserts. Rather, the book offers better food choices and explains in full detail what a fat is, what a carbohydrate is, and it's so easy to understand. I love this book because it tells you this is not a diet, but a newer way of eating the correct way. Spend the $8 to get it; it will retrain your thinking about eating and eating the right way, so you're not only more full at dinner, but you won't feel guilty about eating that piece of chocolate cake.

In Sink Reflections, Marla Cilley -- the FlyLady -- helped hundreds of thousands of her fans combat overwhelming household C.H.A.O.S. (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome). Taking a "baby-steps" approach, she offered little chores to do every day, to wipe out clutter and feelings of inadequacy. Now, in Body Clutter, the FlyLady and Leanne Ely, the Dinner Diva and creator of the Saving Dinner series, team up to teach readers how to handle and erase the clutter they carry on their bodies and minds when it comes to body image.
The FlyLady and Leanne say that it's not about finding the perfect diet, it's about the way you feel about food and your body and understanding sound nutrition. With warm voices, unique lingo, and no preaching, they apply a step-by-step technique, coaching the readers from beginning to end and sharing their own success stories along the way.
Customer Reviews:
Terrible!.......2007-06-15
I'm not normally one to go online and post a bad review, but I was so thoroughly disappointed by this book that I felt I had to do something about it. Not only is it terribly written, but there's no true insight or mental depth to the book. The author's style of writing is just as haphazard and messy as one of the rooms in her house. I do not recommend wasting your money on this book. The most the book does is provide someone with a little bit of comfort to know that there are other messy, overweight people out there. But alas, it doesn't provide any fundamental insights on changing poor eating habits or increasing exercise.
It's not about the weight.......2007-06-09
I've read so many testimonials about this book -- and I've read the book twice myself. Author Cilley has really hit on something important, and it's not about dieting.
FlyLady's mission is God Sent.......2007-06-04
If you look on the grand scale of things you will appreciate the wisdom Flylady puts into this book. Its all about "Fully Loving YOURSELF" = fly, answering those self doubts and putting them to rest.
Marla exposes those inner demons that drive us to put ourselves down, and she gives us examples of how to overcome and take charge, one baby step at a time. Its just convincing yourself that you are worth it. And I believe we all are. Her vision allows us to see ourselves as Jesus sees us. Loveable souls
With the use of the baby step process of building routines that become a foundation for living, the way to success is really quite easy to follow. I recommend this book and her other one too. We are worth the efforts we put into caring for our families. Give back to yourself what you give to others and you will see more joy than you ever thought imagineable. Seize the day and order these books that will be your first baby step towards flying! You are incrediblity worth IT >----->
Good for today's environemnt.......2007-05-29
I'm not exactly the target market for this book but the discussions on body clutter, how we see ourselves, how the media adjusts how we see ourselves, how we deal with our emotions and past history through food, how we don't make the correct choices for our best, and how we let our "inner brats" take over our good choices have all been helpful and pertinent reading. Im in my mid 40's now and want to reduce my weight some without a fad diet and get my health in tip top shape. This book is a great tool for learning how to do that for myself, by myself without gadgets or the present popular diet.
Warm, loving support for turning around your life........2007-05-28
An honest account by the authors of the health, body, and mind issues of being overweight. Simple, but effective suggestions to discover and discard the "clutter" that defeats most diet programs. This is not a diet program, it is a declutter program that gets you to look for and at the roots of self-deprecating behavior. I am not overweight, but have other issues and this book is valuable for me, too.
